IN THE AFTERMATH OF MORE GUN VIOLENCE, A NEW SCHOTT FOUNDATION REPORT REVEALS STUDENTS NEED ACCESS TO MENTAL HEALTH AND OTHER “LOVING” COMMUNITY-BASED SUPPORT SYSTEMS

On Wednesday, Feb. 21st, The Schott Foundation for Public Education released the Loving Cities Index – a new study that looks at 10 U.S. cities and measures access to 24 different types of supports like mental health, healthy food, affordable housing, sustainable wages and public transportation, all of which have a proven connection to closing the opportunity for all students.

The Loving Cities Index aims to align policy-makers, philanthropy and community members around a supportsbased agenda and recognizes that the standards-based approach that has dominated education reform agendas for decades has failed. The Loving Cities Index profiled the U.S. cities of: Long Beach, California, Denver, Colorado, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Baltimore, Maryland, Charlotte, North Carolina, Springfield, Massachusetts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Chicago, Illinois, Buffalo, New York and Little Rock, Arkansas.

Nutrition, food access, and spending at 13th Annual Chicago Food Policy Summit addressed

CHICAGO - The Chicago Food Policy Action Council (CFPAC) hosted its “13th Annual Chicago Food Policy Summit: From Survive to Thrive,” on Friday, February 23, 2018 at the South Shore Cultural Center, 7059 S. South Shore Drive. More than 175 local agriculture experts, elected officials, environmental justice authorities; emergency food providers; healthy food access and health care advocates; urban farmers; food workers; and students registered to attend.

The Chicago Food Policy Summit facilitates the development of responsible policies to improve access for Chicago residents to culturally appropriate, nutritionally sound, affordable, and fair food grown through environmentally sustainable practices.

Over 1,400 Noble Network of Charter Schools Students Registered as New Voters CHICAGO, IL – Students and staff from the Noble Network of Charter Schools recently delivered 1,421 students’ new voter registration forms to the Cook County Board of Elections.

“Our goal at Noble is to prepare students with the scholarship, discipline, and honor to live exemplary lives,” said Emily Mason, principal of Muchin College Prep in the Loop. “Part of living an exemplary life is civic engagement and the opportunity to improve one’s community through the democratic process.”

Noble schools are not able to engage in any sort of political action or support any political candidates, and no portion of the voter registration process implied any sort of endorsement for or against any candidates or potential candidates. Noble schools simply made voter registration forms available and answered students’ questions through the registration process.

“Our Noble students spend a significant amount of time attending class, studying, commuting, working, participating in extracurricular activities, and being active members of their families and communities. We felt it was important to simplify the voter registration experience by making the process convenient and removing any potential bureaucratic barriers,” said Ellen Moiani, a community organizer for Noble. “Today’s registration results are a tremendous start towards the goal of having all our eligible students become voters.”

Dr. Kelly Harris, an associate professor of African-American Studies at Chicago State University, said while there is hope, the future looks bleak for African Americans.

“Fifty years out from the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., African- Americans are still dealing with the same issues Dr. King talked about,” said Harris. “We’re still dealing with incarceration. Our poverty rates have not changed much. More African-Americans are getting higher education, but there is still great disparity. We’re also still dealing with police brutality and white supremacy,” he added.

Harris shared his assessment on the future outlook for African-Americans as Black History Month winds to an end.

“A lot of us are doing well, but the commitment to change as a whole is not there,” Harris explained.

Harris added in order to move the needle of progress forward, there will have to be a commitment on the part of black leadership, politicians and the African-American community, working together to bring about real solutions to a myriad of issues.

High unemployment rates, higher property taxes, higher water rates, high crime rates and poor schools are some of the issues African-Americans continue to encounter.

When asked if African-Americans are still dealing with the

effects of slavery, Harris said, “My opinion and the opinion of a lot of other scholars in Black studies, is this country has never dealt with the issue of slavery.”

As for Chicago, Harris said money is not coming into struggling Black communities, the areas that need it the most.

He added part of the problem is that young black males are not being properly prepared for the workforce and that it’s been proven that some employers are biased against them.

It would help a lot if African-Americans knew their own history, Harris said. The school curriculum nationwide, with an exception here or there, does not include Black history the way it should.

A report by Gary A. Johnson, publisher of Black Men in America.com, updated Dec. 2017, found that 96.1 percent of the 1.2 million households in the top one percent are White. The report states further that America’s 100 richest people control more wealth than the entire Black population and the average Black family would need 228 years to build the wealth of a White family today.

“Financial literacy is sorely needed in the Black community,” Harris said. “People who have access to income have access to networks, which is significant in building wealth.

Harris said he’s happy to see that the younger generation of activists have picked up the fight for justice and equality and he hopes any generational divides are mended.

Food Desert Study Shows Troubling Conclusion

A recently published study found that lowincome residents who live in food deserts make unhealthy food choices even when they travel further to shop outside their neighborhoods.

According to the study, “The Geography of Poverty and Nutrition: Food Deserts and Food Choices Across the United States,” conducted by Jean-Pierre Dubé, a professor with the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, New York University’s Hung Allcott and Stanford University’s Rebecca Diamond, exposing low-income households to the same products and prices available to high-income households reduces nutritional inequality by only 9 percent while the remaining 91 percent of the nutrition gap is driven by shoppers’ preference.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture defines food deserts as parts of the country void of fresh fruit, vegetables, and other healthful whole foods, usually impoverished areas.

When asked why he conducted the study and what purpose it would serve, Dubé said that no one commissioned the study, but it’s

something he’s been interested in for years.

“One of the conclusions in our study is that opening a supermarket in a food desert has very little impact on the nutritional composition of households’ shopping baskets,” Dube said. “People in food deserts shop in supermarkets almost as frequently as people living in higher income neighborhoods; they just travel longer distances to stores.”

High-income households making more than $70,000 a year are willing to pay almost double for the daily recommended quantity of vegetables and nearly three times more for daily recommended quantity of fruit, the researchers estimate. However, low-income households making less than $25,000 a year are willing to pay more for sugar and saturated fats.

Education and knowledge of nutrition are strongly associated with preference differences across income groups.

“My paper is about nutritional inequality,” Dubé said. He added a new study is needed to discern whether education and knowledge are cause for the difference in healthy eating. “I don’t know if I’ ll take that on, not sure,” he said.

C O M M E N TA RY THE SECOND AMENDMENT AND WHITE ANXIETY

By Oscar H. Blayton There has been yet another school shooting in America. The multiple murders at the Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida mark the 18th school shooting in this nation since the beginning of the year. And once again the only response by elected officials has been to offer “thoughts and prayers” for the victims and their families.

News anchors and pundits scratch their heads and ask, “What can be done to fix this?” while ignoring the obvious answer limit access to guns. clearly has a gun problem, a problem that can be solved if we act, as so many countries around the world have done.

But we choose not to.

Much of the blame for these killings is placed at the feet of the National Rifle Association (NRA), the political behemoth that slides dollars into the pockets of every conservative federal elected official and to many state politicians as well. These “bribes” ensure that conservative politicians will not enact any meaningful legislation that will stop or slow the flow of guns, even into the Oscar H. Blayton hands of the criminally insane. But the NRA could not exist without a culture in this country that places a higher priority on the right to gun ownership than on the lives of school children.

The main question then becomes, “How did this madness come to dictate America’s priorities?”

In attempting to answer this question, we cannot ignore the racial dynamic of America’s obsession with guns. White men can walk the streets with fully loaded automatic rifles and suffer no negative consequences, while people of color are shot dead for having a toy gun.

This is because the freedom of Americans to bears arms that is not the real issue here; it is the freedom of white Americans to arm themselves against people of color (who are perceived as a threat).

Even though the great majority of mass shooters are white, the perceived threat is the armed person of color. The psyches of many white Americans are tainted by a fear of retribution for past wrongs and injustices committed against people of color. This fear will not go away anytime soon because for as long as the injustices persist, the fear will persist and the gun culture will persist.

So, the mass killings will persist.

Dr. Howard Jones discovered a malignant tumor on Henrietta Lacks cervix in 1951 at Johns Hopkins Hospital. The events that followed led to the greatest discovery in medical history. Lacks began undergoing radium treatments shortly there after and ultimately died in October of that year, according to John Hopkins Medical.

FCA US Product Design Office Kicks Off Sixth Annual ‘Drive for Design’ Contest High school students, it’s time to rev up your creative engines! The FCA US Product Design Office is looking for aspiring young artists with a passion for automotive design to participate in the 2018 Drive for Design contest.

Returning for the sixth consecutive year, the Drive for Design contest challenges all U.S. high school students in grades 10-12 to design a Jeep® Wrangler for the year 2030. The FCA design team also is continuing its partnership with EyesOn Design and Lawrence Technological University for this year’s contest.

Communities Invited to Submit Projects for New $225 million IDOT Freight Program SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking project proposals for a new competitive grant program that aims to improve the mobility of freight at the local level. Applications are due April 6 for up to $225 million in National Highway Freight Program funds to be distributed through 2022.

“The efficient movement of goods and services is central to what makes Illinois the transportation hub of North America,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn. “We are thrilled to offer this exciting opportunity to invest in our communities and help them arrive at solutions that will generate economic activity, create jobs and enhance the quality of life for their residents.”

Administered by IDOT using federal funds, the competitive grant program is designed to implement the goals of the Illinois State Freight Plan to improve safety, boost efficiency and grow the economy.

Successful proposals will include plans to reduce bottlenecks, improve freight-related safety, increase intermodal accessibility to freight

corridors and enhance efficiency through the strategic deployment of technology.

Eligible applicants include local, state or federal governmental agencies, metropolitan planning organizations and regional planning commissions. Project proposals from a private entity must have a public sponsor. Application and qualification information is available at idot. illinois.gov/ILFreight. Grant awards will be announced in June.

IDOT will host three informational meetings to explain the grant program and provide one-on-one assistance to prospective applicants.

A Facebook group called Entrepreneurs United for Success, is making it easy for entrepreneurs to do business together.

By joining the group, members can create a network among themselves by buying and selling their products and services to one another.

Group members also have an opportunity to share information about their businesses while keeping up with some of the latest business trends.

To join, business owners need a Facebook account and should search for Entrepreneurs United for Success on Facebook.

Facebook is an American online social media and social networking company based in Menlo Park, California. The Facebook website was launched on February 4, 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, along with fellow Harvard College students and roommates, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes.

As of January 2018, Facebook had 2.2 billion monthly users.

Encompass Health and Saint Alphonsus announce joint venture to provide seamless post-acute patient care Encompass Health Corporation (NYSE: EHC), formerly known as HealthSouth Corporation, and Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center (SARMC) have formed a joint venture to build and operate a 40-bed, freestanding inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Boise.

The joint venture plans to more effectively and efficiently manage patients across the post-acute continuum in Idaho.

“Saint Alphonsus is a widely known and respected name in the healthcare industry. It is not really a secret that the habits we employ today are the predictors of our experiences tomorrow.

Therefore, the gateway to a preferred future lies in our ability to modify our habitual patterns of behavior and ensure that our thinking, feeling, and actions are more consistently aligned with the good desires of our heart. Because habits are automatic patterns, we rarely think about them.

Perhaps now is as good a time as any to recalibrate these automatic approaches and adopt some new, different patterns as seeds to be sewn into the harvest of your tomorrow.

This is not to suggest that every habit we have needs to be changed. In fact, most of the habits we have are useful. We all learn to write and develop the complex skill of writing through habit.

Habits give us the ability to perform hundreds of mundane tasks without devoting precious energy and creative capacity to the task. There is something to be said for being able to tie, strap, or buckle ones shoes without exerting a ton of mental attention.

Habits are wonderful when used the right way.

What happens when we develop what might be considered a bad habit? When we develop bad habits, we establish ways of thinking and behaving that produce undesirable and unproductive experiences.

These undesirable experiences collide with the better versions of our self and we have difficulty reconciling why our new wine inspiration seems to keep getting lost in the wineskins of our former thinking, feeling, words, and actions. A bad habit never goes away on its own.

Moreover, it is an undo it yourself project. As Jim Rohn suggested, “You don’t get better by chance, you get better by change.”

Typically, and ironically, the victims of American injustice are not doing the killing. A segment of the white populace that is armed to the teeth unleashes its murderous anxiety by firing assault weapons, killing the innocent. It may seem farfetched to quote a character from a “Star Wars” episode, but in this case, the warning by Master Jedi Yoda’s makes sense: “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”

To those whites prone to such behavior, Donald Trump has given license to openly fear and hate people of color. The resulting suffering has followed, as night follows the day.

The problem of mass shootings is most definitely a gun problem. It is also undeniably a mental health problem. And at the base of it all, the root of the gun culture that allows the mentally ill to run around with the capability to commit multiple murders is white America’s fear of people of color.

But the fear that many white people have of people of color pales in comparison to their fear of a Black man with a gun. The high-water mark for American gun control legislation during the last eighty years was in the late 1960s, due in large part to the Black Panther Party showing up heavily armed at the California State House in May 1967. The sight of armed Black men with large afros and berets sent a chill down America’s spine and sparked political activity that eventually led to new gun control laws being passed in federal and state

legislatures.

In the years since, law enforcement across the country struck heavy blows against Black organizations perceived to be radical, armed and dangerous. These organizations began to fade and the perceived threat level lessened.

Once this happened, gun control began to be relaxed.

A working paper released by the Harvard Business School in 2016 explored the impact of mass shootings on gun policy from 1989 to 2014. It showed that gun laws have been loosened over the years by legislators courted by the gun lobby. The paper even states, “When there is a Republican-controlled legislature, mass shootings lead to more firearm laws that loosen gun control. A mass shooting in the previous year increases the number of enacted laws that loosen gun restrictions by 75% in states with Republican-controlled legislatures.”

In other words, when there is a mass shooting, Republicans make it easier for someone to commit another mass shooting by loosening gun control laws. This can best be explained by the existence of a great fear of, and a need to arm against, the perceived threat posed by people of color.

The gun lobby’s 2nd Amendment argument to keep and bear arms is predicated upon selfdefense. But the language of that amendment begins,” A well regulated Militia, being T:9.5”of a free State…” necessary to the security Gun rights advocates never S:9.5” talk about this

first clause of the one sentence that is the 2nd Amendment. The necessary “well regulated Militia” underpinning the right to keep and bear arms has been swept aside, as it is now alleged that the amendment addresses the security of individuals rather than that of the “free state.”

Today, it is white privilege, not America, that some white people are seeking to protected by the 2nd Amendment.

We must now ask ourselves, “How do we, as citizens, take on the gun lobby and the culture that supports it?” Clearly, our current, collective elected officials will do nothing.

We, as citizens, need to begin on the local, state and federal levels to replace politicians who are lackeys of the NRA and the gun lobby so that we can pass laws restricting access to automatic weapons. The right to bear arms does not mean the right to bear all weapons.

Ordinary people cannot possess mortars, rocket launchers or grenades, so, why can’t we extend these prohibitions to include automatic assault rifles? Why can’t we mandate strict background checks and limit the number of guns an individual can purchase?

We must put people in office who have principles and who value human life over profit and privilege and find ways to pass laws that create more effective gun controls.

It is time for us to use gun laws to protect citizens rather than to secure white privilege.

Forward-thinking programs get kids to eat better (BPT) - They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But for millions of low-income children across the country, the low-cost or free lunch they get at school is the most nutritious, most filling meal they will eat.

In 2016, over 30 million kids across the U.S. received low-cost or free lunches at their school. With such a wide-ranging impact, school meal programs play a huge role in the well-being of our nation’s young people.

According to Wilder Research, nearly one in six children in the state of Minnesota live in food-insecure households. Many of these kids rely on school lunch to get the nutrients they need. To make sure these needs are met, one school district in the state has been blending nutrition with trends in popular culture to create a dynamic program that is getting kids excited about healthy food while also creating better eating habits.

Jr. Iron Chef Question: In an urban school district, how can the idea behind a popular television show be used to raise awareness of healthy meal options?

In essence, this is what happened when Miguel Lopez, a seventh-grader at Anwatin Middle School, along with seven other teams and 16 other students, competed alongside eight professional chefs in one of Minneapolis Public Schools’ “Jr. Iron Chef” competitions.

Modeled after the popular television show, where teams compete to create the most appetizing dish, this three-year-old program was designed in cooperation with Cargill to teach students about good nutrition and meal preparation. Students from across the district were invited to compete - just as popular celebrity chefs on TV do - in live cooking competitions.

“This night was not so much about the competition, but

about what these students have learned about how to prepare good meals on their own,” said Minneapolis Public Schools’ Director of Culinary and Wellness Services, Bertrand Weber.

“We wanted to apply the Iron Chef concept to help improve our students’ health and well-being. Yes, it was a cool night, but the hope is that they will go home and do this for themselves and their families versus choosing less healthy meal options.”

While the Jr. Iron Chef competition was getting students all over the district revved up, Cargill and Minneapolis Public Schools were weaving another popular culinary trend into the district’s nutrition and wellness programs: food trucks.

Nutrition on wheels Parked outside the venue where Jr. Iron Chef was held was a shiny, new food truck purchased with a recent $75,000 grant

from Cargill to Minneapolis Public Schools. This is the school district’s second food truck. The first one hit the road in 2013 and became so popular that it quickly exceeded capacity.

The trucks are staffed by the school district’s nutrition and culinary staff, to bring nutritious meals to students, especially when school is not in session.

The trucks also appear at district-run wellness seminars and cooking demonstrations.

“The value of these food trucks has been recognized by Minneapolis Public Schools and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA),” said Cargill Vice President of Corporate Responsibility Michelle Grogg. “It’s been a successful strategy that community and state partners have found to improve their capacity to reach food-insecure children when school is in and out of session.”

In the summer of 2017, Minneapolis Public Schools served approximately 400,000 free meals and snacks to Minneapolis youth. This coming summer, Minneapolis Public Schools’ two food trucks will operate at a total of eight summer feeding sites in conjunction with community youth and physical activity programming.

A new example As school lunch plays such an important role for millions of urban, low-income students, the importance of steering these kids toward eating more nutritious, wholesome meals cannot be overstated. Though it can be hard to get kids excited about fruits and vegetables, the creative and forward-thinking programs put on by the Minneapolis Public Schools point in a fun, and promising, direction.

“It’s great to see two popular trends in food being applied to the nutritional needs of our students,” says Grogg. “We hope it doesn’t stop here and we hope other communities around Minnesota and the U.S. learn from our successes.”

entertainment AARP Ohio Celebrates Everyday Heroes with Record Breaking Attendance for Black Panther Screening in Cleveland

CLEVELAND - More than 1,000 people attended the AARP Ohio Movies for Grownups™ free screening of Black Panther at the Cinemark Valley View, breaking a previous attendance record the Ohio AARP office set in 2017 at the same location. The free event was part of AARP’s national screening taking place in 80+ markets and was designed to be a celebration of the 1.5 million everyday heroes who are providing unpaid care to a family member, spouse or friend in Ohio.

“Family caregivers are the backbone of our care system in America. We need to make it easier for them to coordinate care for their loved ones, get information and resources, and take a break so they can rest and recharge,” said AARP Ohio State Director Barbara A. Sykes. “This type of event is fun, free and we can include helpful information and access to resources.”

There are approximately 40 million family caregivers in the U.S., according to AARP. The unpaid care that family caregivers provide helps delay or prevents costly nursing home care, which is often paid for by Medicaid.

The majority (60%) of caregivers are employed full- or part-time. Although many people may think of caregivers as being older adults, 25% of family caregivers are millennials under age 35 and 1 in 5 African Americans are currently providing short or long-term caregiving to someone close to them.

Family caregivers take on a range of tasks including managing medications, helping with bathing and dressing, preparing and feeding meals,

arranging transportation, and handling financial and legal matters, and African-American caregivers face unique challenges: The majority of African-American family caregivers are much younger than the average general market counterparts (44.2 years old vs.

52.5 old) and are the primary caregivers, providing all or most of the care, without the assistance of paid help Compared with the average population of family caregivers, African-Americans are more likely to spend more than 21 hours per week caregiving 1 in 3 African-American family caregivers are “sandwiched,” caring for a child or grandchild under the age of 18 in the same household Terri Eason is a working professional, a mother

of two teenagers and also provides care for her 96-year old grandmother.

She helped promote the event with the Cleveland Chapter of the Jack and Jill of America, Inc. and says “having the privilege of caring for your loved one is definitely rewarding, but that doesn’t take away the stress. The family dynamic changes and there are some challenges created when a loved one is determined to remain independent and age in place, I appreciate AARP’s focus on providing relevant info for caregivers like myself.”

Videos, articles, forums and books like AARP’s Juggling Life, Work, and Caregiving are examples of the caregiving resources, many of them free, available from AARP to help families prepare for new roles.

“We want to make the transition less stressful and allow families to enjoy more quality time together,” added Sykes.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to gather, write and report on news in communities encompassing the Citizen's coverage areas.

The ability to research and write thought provoking stories on deadline, pitch story ideas, conduct interviews and find sources to discuss topics is an essential function of the position.

The ideal candidate should also possess the ability to identify excellent photo opportunities, take photos and complete an inhouse column efficiently.

Applicants should be proficient in using Microsoft Office, Email, Smart phones as well as writing captions and catchy headlines for articles.

A Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications, a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism, or a related degree and at least six months work experience in writing for a print publication serving as a general assignment reporter is preferred.
