Rush Introduces Resolution Designating the Week of February 12 through February 16, 2018 as ‘‘Black Women’s Heart Health Awareness Week’’ WASHINGTON — U.S. Representative Bobby L. Rush (D-Ill.) introduced, H. Res. 722, a resolution supporting the designation of the week of February 12 through February 16, 2018 as “Black Women’s Heart Health Awareness Week” to raise awareness and understanding that heart disease is the number one killer of women and that it disproportionately affects black women.

As the country celebrates Black History Month and American Heart Month this February, it is critical to elevate both the cultural significance of the month and the awareness of the health crisis directly impacting black women.

“This is an issue that hits close to home, as I lost my beloved wife and best friend, Carolyn, to heart disease last year,” said Rush. “I am personally committed to doing what I can to help educate black women about their health risk and how to prevent this disease from impacting their lives. Black women are leading the way in our country and we must do everything we can to not only promote their successes but protect their hearts.”

Nicholas Smith was recently sworn in, by Judge Freddrenna Lyle, as Illinois State Representative of the 34th District at the Pullman National Monument Site Visitor Center.

Previously, Smith served as the Ninth Ward Streets and Sanitation Superintendent and as the Former President of the Roseland Heights Community Association, according to www. sixthward.us.

“I can’t think of a better person to take this position than Smith because he is a public servant and you want people who represent you to be servants with servant hearts,” Judge Lyle said. “Plus, Smith lives in the community so if you see him walking down the street, feel free to check him to keep him focused and well-grounded.”

After being sworn in as the new State Rep., Smith acknowledged all of his colleagues and friends who have continued to support his efforts in the community.

“This job is not just representing the people in my community of the 34th District but the decisions we make in Springfield, Illinois effect the entire state,” Smith said. “So, as I look around the room at co-workers, family and friends, I know this is why we do this.”

He continued to share a story about when he served with Alderman Anthony Beale. A community resident called the office to ask if Mayor Rahm Emanuel was Beale’s boss. Smith replied “No, you are.”

“The voters are the boss,” Smith said. “If you don’t like what’s going on then every two or four years you have the opportunity to change it. So, spread the word to your neighbors, family and friends about the importance of voting.”

He said if more people would have voted in the previous election, the State of Illinois and Chicago would not be in the financial situation it’s in today.

But I’m going to join this fight in Springfield to defend you, but we have a Mar. 20 Primary Electing coming and I want all of you to be at the polls because the only way we can make change is by voting.”

As Smith was being sworn in, Judge Lyle told him that a great burden is being placed on his shoulders with much responsibility.

“I want you to understand that you represent those aspirations of people that have gone on before,” Lyle told Smith.

“Your ancestors could never have dreamed of this and with this burden comes great responsibility to do great things.”

Pritzker, Stratton, and Rush Release Statements Regarding Leaked FBI Tape Chicago Tribune recently released a controversial FBI wiretap which showed Illinoisans a new side of J.B. Pritzker, democratic candidate for Illinois governor. On the tapes, you can hear Pritzker talking with then-Governor Rod Blagojevich about who should be nominated to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Barack Obama, according to an article published by the Chicago Tribune Feb. 6.

The phone call was recorded in late 2008 by the FBI during an investigation of Gov. Blagojevich who was later convicted of attempting to sell the Senate seat, according to a Chicago Tribune article published on Aug. 23, 2016.

Pritzker suggests Secretary of State Jesse White should take the seat and says he is “the one that’s least offensive.”

Pritzker tells the Governor that nominating White “covers you on the African American thing.”

Pritzker also stated that White would be a good option for the empty seat because moving him would open up the Secretary of State position which he calls a “key spot” and then goes on to tell the governor “you don’t have to put an African American in that spot.”

Pritzker immediately released a public apology. “I’ve been longtime friends with Jesse White for more than 35 years. He is one of our great statesmen and one of the most respected public servants in the history of Illinois. I think now as I did then that he would have made a great United States Senator,” Pritzker stated. “Today, I want to be clear about one thing. I wasn’t my best self on that call, and I apologize for that. I regret some of the things I said and some of the things I didn’t say, but that is not what is in my heart and those are not my values.”

Pritzker’s running mate, Juliana Stratton also spoke on his behalf saying, “I joined this campaign because of JB’s values, his record of helping people, and his compassion. All along, JB and I have had countless frank conversations about race, the challenges we face as a state and a country, and the path forward. He is someone who really listens and seeks to understand,” Stratton stated.

Congressman Bobby Rush, who previously endorsed Chris Kennedy for governor of Illinois, released a statement on the matter saying, “It was discouraging to hear the despicable conversation between J.B. Pritzker and former Governor Rod Blagojevich, as they discuss leaders in the African-American community in such a dismissive and disrespectful manner. It was particularly jarring to listen to this audio as the country celebrates Black History Month and reflects on the historical and cultural accomplishments of our community.”

“To hear these men describe the ways in which they believe they are covered, ‘on the African-American thing’ is simply outrageous. Black people are not ‘things’ nor is the black community a collection of political pawns on a chessboard to be moved around and manipulated by privileged white men. In that regard, former Illinois Senate President Emil Jones Jr. refused to accept his apology and the AfricanAmerican community deserves a more committed and sincere expressive change of heart. This type of rhetoric and thinking has no place in public discourse and should be widely condemned,” Rush stated.

Representative Ford Honors Mandela’s Service, Pushes for Technology Education

As the celebration of Black History Month continues, Illinois State Representative La Shawn K. Ford paid homage, in a recent Citizen interview, to Nelson Mandela, a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader and philanthropist, who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.

Before winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, Mandela joined the African National Congress in 1942. He served and directed a campaign of peaceful, nonviolent defiance against the South African government and its racist policies for 20 years, resulting in Mandela spending 27 years in prison for political offenses, according to www.biography. com.

“Mandela persevered and stood for what was right and just for humanity and society,” said Illinois State Representative La Shawn K. Ford.

“Because of this, Mandela sacrificed 27 years of his own freedom to give many more people freedom in this country and in the world. He taught not just South Africa, but the world about sacrifice, perseverance and public service.”

Celebrating the abundant history of African Americans, Rep. La Shawn Ford, Illinois state agencies and community residents recently hosted a Black History Month Resource Fair to discuss the importance of college enrollment and combating unemployment.

“February [brings] the 2018 Black History Month Celebration but unfortunately at this time, unemployment in the black

community continues to be too high, college enrollment too low and violence on the rise,” said Ford.

At top-tier universities, black undergraduate populations average 6 percent, a statistic that has remained largely flat for 20 years, according to TheAtlantic. com. Researchers say many top-tier schools rely heavily on measures that disadvantage minority students, including standardized test scores, resulting in high school counselors in predominantly black schools being left underprepared to respond, which steers black students toward less selective schools.

Ford said schools in Illinois must do a better job of preparing students for future technology jobs.

“We have to do everything we can to meet the needs and desires of young people attending school,” Ford said.

“Today, in our school system, we’re still trying to push the same curriculum [designed] before our grandmothers were in school but times have changed.”

“There’s not a student or young person, who dropped out of school, who I’ve talked to that isn’t tech savvy,” he said. “Yet we try to push the same degrees down the throats of young people. If we want to drive more young people to college, we have to change our courses to more technology fields that students are interested in.”

REALTOR® Magazine Seeks Nominations for 2018 Good Neighbor Awards WASHINGTON - Realtors®, members of the National Association of Realtors®, not only help people find the right place to live, they are also committed volunteers who give back to their communities. Seventy-one percent of Realtors® volunteered in their community last year, according to NAR’s 2017 Member Profile.

Five winners will be announced in the November/December issue of REALTOR® Magazine and will receive a $10,000 grant for their nonprofit organizations. More Students are Going to Grad School: How are They Paying for It? (StatePoint) Career aspirations are driving more students to graduate school these days, and nearly two thirds believe an advanced degree is the new minimum standard level of education for any professional occupation.

According to “How America Pays for Graduate School,” the new national study from Sallie Mae and Ipsos, an independent global market research company, nearly all grad students (95 percent) said an advanced degree is necessary to enter, advance, accelerate or remain competitive in their chosen career.

Cost is less of a factor in the enrollment decision than it is at the undergraduate level, as more than eight in 10 surveyed based their enrollment decision on a school’s academic offerings, prestige, location, campus culture, or other personal consideration. However, eight in 10 grad students said they took more responsibility for paying-for-school decisions than they had for their undergraduate studies.

“It is human nature to plan for what you value, and that includes graduate school. Today’s students see graduate school as their ticket to a successful and prosperous career, and most have a plan to pay for their advanced degree before they enroll,” says

year 2016-17, and more than three-fourths of them (77 percent) paid for it, at least in part, by borrowing. Funds borrowed by students covered more than half of the cost (53 percent), while money students earned, including income and savings, paid for 24 percent. Grants, fellowships, scholarships, and tuition waivers accounted for 15 percent, while eight percent of grad school costs came from funds borrowed or contributed by parents or others.

The study also reveals that scholarships and grants are less available for grad students than for undergrads, accounting for just 15 percent of grad school costs. In response, Sallie Mae announced a new Bridging the Dream Scholarship for Graduate Students that will award four $20,000 scholarships in 2018.

How to inspire your teen to expand their horizons and find their passion (BPT) - With mounting pressures and expectations, the high school years can feel overwhelming - for students and parents alike. Teens grapple with questions like: Which colleges should I apply to? What should I choose as a major?

What do I really want to do with my life? What if I don’t have a clue?

As a parent you naturally want to give advice and steer them in the right direction, but you also know it’s a tricky balance. It’s their life, after all, as they’ll often remind you.

So how can you help? Encourage them to explore different interests, with no strings attached. Look for activities beyond the usual choices. Research extracurricular programs at your school, in your community, even overseas so they can see the breadth of what’s out there. Expose them to a range of possibilities and see what they pick.

Does your teen already have a clear focus? Look for innovative programs that allow them to dig even deeper in real-world settings. Or maybe your son or daughter is shy or stuck in a rut and needs a gentle nudge to try something new?

New book promotes spiritual growth and righteous living TAMPA, Fla. — While compiling lessons he taught his five children over the years, Walter Gormley decided that the lessons are things everyone should know and experience. Likewise, our words do not return to us void and these same words are filled with the power to accomplish what we speak. So whether we realize it or not, we never really outperform our conversation.

If we want to change our lives, we have to change the way we think of ourselves and if we want to change the way we think of ourselves, we need to change the words we say to ourselves. Life is already full of issues and challenges.

Why add to them by discouraging yourself every day with negative selftalk?

Beneath the surface, each of us has an inner voice on a loud speaker trying to convince us of something about ourselves. What does your self-talk sound like and what is it saying to you? Is it a blessing to you? Do you encourage you?

Alternatively, do you curse and criticize yourself ?

Become your own encourager, your own cheerleader. Every time you do a good job, do not just let it pass; give yourself a compliment. Every time you choose discipline over indulgence, encourage yourself; recognize how much you are helping you. When you make a mistake, learn from it and improve but do not beat yourself up and relive the mistake without getting the lesson.

DID PROSECUTORS DESTROY EVIDENCE IN THE COSBY SEXUAL ASSAULT CASE?

“The cumulative effect of the wrongdoing in this case, and the politically and emotionally charged context of this case, elevates the misconduct to a level of a constitutional violation and prosecutorial overreach depriving Cosby of any meaningful right to a fair trial,” Cosby’s attorneys wrote.

“Such misconduct warrants dismissal of the charges.”

As Montgomery County prosecutors continue to pursue a verdict in the Bill Cosby sexual assault case involving former Temple University employee Andrea Constand, lawyers for the entertainer have filed several motions, including two arguing that the case against him should be dismissed.

And, while such motions are considered procedural and are rarely granted, the “Uptown Saturday Night” star has presented a compelling case for dismissal.

According to court documents filed by Cosby’s lawyers, the court should dismiss all charges against Cosby because, by Montgomery County, Pennsylvania prosecutors’ own admission, they have not only failed to disclose evidence, but have also destroyed exculpatory evidence.

Screen Time Is Here To Stay!

As a producer at The Jim Henson Company and a mom to two boys, I have a unique perspective on screen time. I’ve also explored this issue in one of my shows, Dot. This animated preschool series created by the fabulous Randi Zuckerberg addresses how technology can enhance a kid’s everyday adventures. We were lucky to be advised by Yalda Uhls (author of Media Moms and Digital Dads) on creating a show curriculum that encourages kids and their families to be excellent digital citizens, to come up with a family media agreement, and to talk openly about screen time.

My personal philosophy on this issue is simple: Viva la screen time! I encourage my kids to enjoy movies, television, videos, apps, and more. Like my hero Jim Henson, I believe in the positive transformative power of media. As a producer, my goal has always been to create television and films that enrich, educate, and entertain. So I have always encouraged my boys to love the shows and games that they are drawn to, but also Jim Henson’s Family Hub is the home to some of to discover programming that informs them on issues television’s favorite preschool stars. © Henson and ideas they are curious about. True confession: I don’t have a set amount of time he always gets, but it’s usually no longer than an hour. And we do talk about how long he’ll be watching the shows before he settles in to viewing. And when that last show starts, he gets a reminder that his screen time is almost up. Yes, there have been times when he grabs the phone or remote when screen time is over and runs around the house laughing, but I’m as quick as a cheetah.

My 19-year-old is an adult and at this point in his life, I trust him to regulate his own screen time. And still, the best I can do for both my boys is to model good screen time habits myself. When we are together, I do my best to use my phone only to snap those memorable photos or answer an urgent message. And I tell them why I am taking the time to focus on my screen and not on them.

I also never answer the phone during meals or playtime.

But, once they’re asleep or out and about, I love having my own time to turn on my latest favorite show (hello, Outlander!).

We are in a new golden age of television and I would embolden parents to find shows that will delight and inspire their kids. It will take time (because there is so much content out there), but get involved with customizing your family’s viewing experiences together— it’s FUN! (And, if it happens to be Dot., Splash and Bubbles, Dinosaur Train, Doozers, Word Party, or Julie’s Greenroom…even better!).
