MAYOR EMANUEL, CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY TEAM UP WITH APPLE TO SUPPORT COMPUTER SCIENCE TEACHERS Chicago Public Schools, Apple and Northwestern University today announced a new collaboration to offer free professional learning to teachers across Chicago. Through this unique partnership, teachers will receive the training they need to effectively bring coding, computer science and problem solving into their classrooms for success in the 21st Century workplace.

Chicago Public Schools, Apple and Northwestern University will establish a Center for Excellence at Lane Tech College Prep High School, which will serve as a teaching and learning hub to introduce and train teachers in Apple’s Everyone Can Code curriculum. This collaboration will help expand opportunities for local teachers, giving them new expertise to share with their students and providing them an opportunity to be trained on Apple’s Swift programming platform.

PARTNERING FOR HEALTH EQUITY – IDPH CELEBRATES NATIONAL MINORITY HEALTH MONTH National Minority Health Month, which is celebrated every year in April, is an effort to raise awareness about health disparities that continue to affect racial and ethnic minority populations. In accordance with this year’s National Minority Health Month theme, “Partnering for Health Equity,” the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) Center for Minority Health Services will continue to bridge efforts and awareness across the state and increase partnerships in order to help accelerate health equity and make the state of Illinois a stronger and healthier state.

The IDPH encourages everyone to become part of this awareness month by participating in health promotion events and activities going on around the state. IDOC OPENS MURPHYSBORO LIFE SKILLS RE-ENTRY CENTER MURPHYSBORO, IL - The Illinois Department of

Corrections opened its second Life-Skills Re-entry Center recently, aimed at helping offenders learn skills that will be critical to their success upon release. The first 20 offenders were transferred to the Murphysboro Life Skills Re-entry Center, in Murphysboro, IL recently. They’ll go through an orientation process and get acclimated to the new facility before starting educational, job readiness, and cognitive behavior therapy courses. They will also learn skills that help them readjust to society - like how to manage a bank account, use the latest technology, and schedule medical appointments.

“Our goal is to help build a strong foundation and stop the revolving door to prison,” said IDOC Director John Baldwin.

“We’re improving outcomes for the men and women in our custody. When they return to their communities with the skills needed to reintegrate successfully, they will be better parents, better neighbors and better citizens overall.”

Offenders who have one to four years left on their sentence qualify for placement at the Life Skills Re-entry Centers.

Youth and Families Get Introduced to Innovative Summer Opportunities Continued from page 1 CHICAGO – Hundreds of youth and families from across the

city attended Chicago City of Learning’s (CCOL) Spring Into Summer Fair at Jones College Prep recently, where they had the opportunity to explore, try out, and sign up for a diverse set of summer programs offered citywide.

Launched in the summer of 2013 by Mayor Rahm Emanuel, CCOL is a year-round initiative that allows young people to discover, engage in and have evidence for out-of-school learning opportunities they pursue beyond school walls.

CCOL, whose online platform currently hosts more than 100,000 youth’s digital portfolios, is helping youth and families “Get Set For Summer” by encouraging them to participate in summer programs based on their interests and passions, rather than just practicalities like location and cost. Through partnerships with over 100 community-based organizations and collaborations with the city’s parks and libraries, CCOL can help youth and families discover new options that align with their passions and that are close and free or low-cost.

At the Fair, Chief Education Officer LaTanya McDade recognized three CPS schools, Marcus Moziah Garvey Elementary School, Ambrose Plamondon Elementary School, and John Palmer Elementary School for their students’ high level of engagement on the CCOL platform and awarded iPad Minis to students who had particularly strong submissions in CCOL’s Create Your Path challenge, which asked youth to write about their passions.

“At Chicago Public Schools, we feel it is important for youth to personalize their education and think about what they are really interested in. We want them to dive into that passion, get better at it, and then use their formal learning to carry that passion into their college and/or career experiences,” said Chief McDade.

While CCOL’s database offers thousands of programs and hundreds of online activities, there was no shortage of opportunity at the Spring Into Summer Fair. With offerings www.thechicagocitizen.com

from twenty four of Chicago’s leading cultural organizations, activities ranged from juggling with CircEsteem and improvisation with The Second City, to robotics with the Adler Planetarium and arts and crafts with the Art Institute of Chicago. By engaging in hands-on activities with the participating organizations, youth discovered new interests and deepened existing passions, while adults learned how to access programs – both online and on site – to meet those interests.

But the Fair is not the only aspect of CCOL’s “Get Set For Summer” initiative. Rather, the City of Chicago, CPS and CCOL are encouraging all youth and families to visit Chicagocityoflearning.com to explore the hundreds of summer programs and ultimately sign up for the ones that interest them most! The CCOL platform makes individualized recommendations to youth, based on their interests, and then enables youth to send a text message to parents or guardians, notifying them of their interests.

“Chicago has so much to offer young people, and we simply want to make it easier for youth to explore their interests and ultimately pursue their passions by taking up these great programs all over the city…especially during the summer,” said Sybil Madison-Boyd, Ph.D. of Northwestern University’s School of Education and Social Policy, Office of Community Education Partnerships and the Director of Chicago City of Learning.

ComEd Files For $23 Million Rate Decrease

omEd recently filed their annual formula rate update with the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC). The new rates call for a $23 million decrease overall, compared to the currently approved rates. If approved, the new rates would appear as a 50 cent decrease on customers monthly bills.

“Our filing includes a rate request for distribution services, or delivery of electricity, in 2019 of $2.7 billion. This represents the decrease of $23 million from the ICC approved rate that took effect in January of this year. It will result in the decrease of about 50 cents on the average monthly residential customer bill.

This is the third time we have filed for a rate decrease since the smart grid law was passed,” said Veronica Gomez, senior vice president of Regulatory and Energy Policy at ComEd. This is the eighth formula update filing ComEd has made since the Energy Infrastructure Modernization Act (EIMA) also known as the Smart Grid Law was passed by the Illinois General Assembly in 2011. according to a press release from ComEd. Along with helping to decrease residential rates, the Smart Grid Law has paved the way for ComEd’s $2.6 billion investment to strengthen, modernize, and improve the reliability of the Northern Illinois power grid.

“By the end of October of this year, we will complete the installation of about 4 million smart meters in Northern Illinois. This is about 3 years ahead of the original schedule. This means that all ComEd customers can realize more control over energy consumption and cost and have easier access to money saving smart meter programs much sooner than expected,” said Fidel Marquez, senior vice president of Governmental and External Affairs at ComEd. The new digital smart grid platform has also allowed for ComEd to install smart LED streetlights throughout the greater Chicagoland area.

“These lights reduced costs and provided more remote moderating control. They also provide a backbone for smart city infrastructure through the installation of

sensor-based technology and open the door to a broad range of smart city technologies,” said Marquez.

The recent annual formula rate filing also included an advancement of $205 million from anticipated savings in 2019 as a result of the federal tax cut and jobs act.

“In this filing, we have proposed to the ICC that we advance into 2019 with savings that customers would realize through the lower tax rates. The formula rate making process allows for such timely distribution of savings.

It also would help to extend the stable rate environment that we have had for some time since before the smart grid program came and launched,” said Gomez.

Although ComEd’s smart grid investments and other major initiatives have created a total spending of almost $12 billion since 2011, customer bills have remained stable. ComEd’s per kilowatt hour residential rates trend below the average price across the entire U.S., according to a press release from ComEd. Rare 1846 Men’s Shirt Donated to the Illinois State Museum SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Illinois State Museum is thrilled to

announce the recent donation of a man’s dress shirt dating back to 1846, with a documented history of who made it, who wore it, and the specific day on which it was worn.

Springfield native Zimri Enos wore the short on his wedding day on June 10, 1846. The high-collared, ruffled shirt is made of linen, fastens to the throat, and is embroidered with Zimri’s initials. Its triangular-shaped gussets under the sleeves would have allowed him to have a wider range of motion.

Ruffled shirts were considered fancy at the time, and were typically worn by urban gentlemen. They even had some political implications. Politicians of the day who wished to paint their rivals as elitist and out-of-touch often accused each other of wearing “ruffled shirts.”

Zimri’s mother, Salome Enos, made the shirt. She’s considered one of the “founding mothers” of Springfield because she and her husband were one of the first families to own land in the city. The

shirt was passed down through several generations before being donated to the Illinois State Museum by the O.M. Hatch family, descendants of the Enos family. The shirt came with a handwritten note reading, “Wedding shirt of Father’s made by Grandma Enos.”

While a shirt like this would have been common in the 19th century, they’re quite a rare find today. Most of them were cut down for children’s clothing, cut up for bandages, or turned into rags somewhere along the way.

The shirt will be on display at the “Illinois Bicentennial and Beyond: The Illinois Legacy Collection” exhibition, which will open on June 30.

The Illinois State Museum, located on located 502 S. Spring St. in Springfield, promotes discovery, learning, and an appreciation of Illinois’ natural, cultural, and artistic heritage. The Museum’s extensive collections and research activities provide the foundation for exhibitions and public programs that tell the story of the land, life, people and art of Illinois.

Louis Vuitton Announces Virgil Abloh as New Menswear Designer New York – Virgil Abloh, 37, is

making history as the first black artistic director for Louis Vuitton. This is a huge accomplishment, considering how underrepresented black names are in the luxury European world of fashion. Here’s what we know about the new designer.

In 1998, Abloh started DJing for fashion parties and even opening sets for artists like Travis Scott, going by the name, “Flat White.” He graduated from University of Wisconsin with an engineering degree and then studied architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He’s had no formal training in fashion design, however, his fashion interest peeked meeting with Kanye West in 2002, becoming his creative consultant. Then in 2009, Abloh and West interned at Fendi.

Michael Burke, CEO of Louis Vuitton, was the CEO of Fendi at the time of Abloh and West’s internship. “I paid them $500 a month,” Burke told the New York Times.

“I was really impressed with how they brought a whole new vibe to the studio and were disruptive in the best way.

Virgil could create a metaphor and a new vocabulary to describe something as oldschool as Fendi. I have been following his career ever since.”

In 2012, Abloh started his first fashion label, Pyrex Vision, a streetwear line with luxurious T-shirts and vintage flannels.

This set the precedence for his next line, Off-White, launched in 2013 and has a higher-end twist on streetwear fashion.

And good news for the Off-White fans, Abloh will still be designing for Off-White as he takes on his new role with Louis Vuitton.

Voters Choose the Top Illinois Buildings SPRINGFIELD, IL – Buildings inspired by

sports, religion, the Illinois prairie and the skies above were chosen as the state’s top buildings in online voting for the Illinois Top 200 project.

The top vote-getters include Chicago’s Wrigley Field, the Baha’i House of Worship in Wilmette, a “Prairie style” Frank Lloyd Wright home in Springfield and Chicago’s soaring Willis Tower.

The Illinois Top 200 project lets Illinoisans vote every two weeks on the most inspiring leaders, greatest books, top businesses and much more. By the state’s 200th birthday on Dec. 3, voters will have chosen 10 favorites in 20 different categories – the Illinois Top 200.

Voting in the next category, top historic sites, is underway at www.IllinoisTop200.com.

mansion was completed around 1810, making it the oldest brick building in Illinois. The owner, Nicholas Jarrot, was a French immigrant who became a successful businessman and wanted a substantial home in the new Federal style.

considered the oldest building in Illinois, dating back to the 1750s. It was part of a fort the French built about 45 miles south of modern St. Louis to control “the Illinois country” – the area that supplied vital food to Louisiana.

n business, values are often tied to the beliefs, traits, and behavioral norms people within the business are expected to display.

In our personal lives, value is often determined by what we believe to be true about ourselves. When we have a positive self-image, we often feel like we bring value to our relationships. Likewise, when we have a negative self-image, we undermine the value and self-worth we bring to those same relationships.

Neville Goddard offered that, “Man’s faith in God is measured by his confidence in himself.” Hebrew 10 indicates, “Do not, therefore, abandon that confidence of yours. It brings a great reward. For you need endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised.”

Confidence, which is not to be confused with arrogance, is important.

When we understand the power that is working within us, it gives us confidence.

This kind of confidence comes from our spiritual foundation. Having confidence in yourself influences how other people see you, how they plan to deal with you, the extent to which they trust you, and whether they will be willing to follow you. Self-confidence helps us put aside self-doubt and gives us the ability to walk in the favor that is upon us.

So what do people get when they get you? Do they get the blessings that only you can bring? Alternatively, do they get the burden of someone who is weighted down with the doubt and indecision of value unfulfilled?

33, remembers the time he saw his first homicide victim. It was a young, black male who had been shot and killed and left dying on his feet in the vestibule of his apartment building, while his family, including a small child, was just upstairs. “[That] was something I couldn’t get out of my head for a long time,” Shelton recalled. “This man had died standing up, and his family was just upstairs. We had the fire department escort them out of the building using a ladder through a window. We couldn’t let them see him like that, or see the blood, or the crime scene. For a long time, I couldn’t get this victim out of my mind. I had to pray about it constantly.”

Shelton, who is pursuing a Masters’ Degree in Urban Leadership at Northern Seminary’s South Side Center for Urban Leadership, works full-time as the faith-based liaison with the Chicago Police Department’s (CPD) 7th District in the Englewood neighborhood. It is a community he grew up in as a child. He is the youngest police officer in the City’s history to serve as CPD’s faith-based liaison, a job in which he takes great pride.

It is in Englewood, with a declining population of about 35,000 residents, that he has come come face-to-face not only death, violence and crime, but also the effects of poverty, under-resourced public schools, a lack of mental health services, economic opportunity and gainful employment for both youth and adults.

Shelton is a preacher’s kid, whose passion for evangelism and was expressed through music ministry. His father, Dennis Shelton is senior pastor of Anointed Work Worship Center and continues to mentor his son who serves under his dad’s leadership as first assistant pastor of their faith community.

aren’t enough, the married father with three children, is also Illinois State Youth Auxiliary President for the Pentecostal Churches of the Apostolic Faith, where he travels throughout the state.

He is a 2008 graduate of Southern Illinois University with an undergraduate degree in sociology; and he earned a Masters Degree in Christian Theology from Olivet Nazarene University.

The soft-spoken officer said it was his work in the 7th District that led him to the next phase of his pedagogical journey when he was invited to enroll in Northern Seminary South Side campus located in the old Hirsch High School at 7740 S. Ingleside in Chicago’s Chatham neighborhood.. Students enrolled in the program engage with complex social and cultural issues facing urban communities, including systemic racism, poverty, violence, and incarceration. Shelton said he was encouraged to pursue the program by one of his mentors, Dr. Gerald Dew,

senior pastor of Antioch Baptist Church in Englewood, and director of the South Side Center and affiliate professor of ministry.

“Dr. Dew saw something in me and so he encouraged me to pursue this degree with an understanding of what I faced as a police officer in an urban community,” said Shelton. “When I mentioned I didn’t really have the money to attend, Dr. Dew worked to get me scholarships and donations so I could pursue my studies.“ The Northern Seminary Masters in Urban Leadership program helps students build on a foundation of biblical knowledge, theology, and church history, and the history of the urban church in America. Leading practitioners in urban ministry train students in preaching, evangelism, conflict mediation, and pastoral care. Classes are held at the former Hirsch High School in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood.

“The South Side Center strengthens pastors and church leaders who are already transforming lives through the power of the gospel and the ministry of the local church. Northern Seminary walks beside them as mutual encouragers: providing biblical training, a network of community support, and curriculum written for the South Side,” said Northern Seminary President Dr. William D. Shiell, Ph.D. “This unique program has been developed, taught, and led by pastors and professors with experience in South Side ministry. Our students are already engaged practitioners who love Jesus and love people. We are privileged to partner with them to help them fulfill their call and change our community.”

Officer Shelton said he is proud to be an ‘ambassador’ for Northern Seminary’s urban program. “It has helped me deal with the conflicts between God’s law and man’s law everyday as a police officer. ...

nonprofit dedicated solely to media content about the black experience, convened the first-ever Black Media Story Summit Friday at Google’s New York City offices. The day-long, invitationonly gathering brought more than 100 black creatives and thought leaders together with media technologists, funders, investors and distributors in a series of conversations designed to get strategic black content into the distribution pipeline.

Findings from the event, which was sponsored by the MacArthur Foundation, Google and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting with additional funding provided by Wyncote Foundation, the New York State Council on the Arts and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, will be summarized in a white paper to be released this summer.

BPM Executive Director Leslie Fields-Cruz conducted opening remarks followed by a keynote given by Jesse Moore, former White House speechwriter and associate director for public engagement in the Obama administration who served as primary liaison to the entertainment community. His speech focused on how storytelling is the X-factor in the social movement. “It’s more than entertainment — or at least it is for people like us.

Because stories touch us in ways we barely detect when we’re being entertained. They build empathy, unpack complexity, and provide perspective that can only take hold because our guard is down. This is the power of stories—and the responsibility of each one of us in this room.”

Sessions included “Diversifying Blackness: Getting the Untold Stories Told,” “Paving New Pathways in Emerging Media,” “Forging New Bonds: Amplifying Activism,” “An Intentional Narrative Space,” “Telling Immersive Stories: A Virtual Reality Showcase,” and “Money Matters: Fueling the Content Pipeline.” Attending the inaugural event were thought leaders in mass incarceration, community safety and policing, technology, diversity, environment, LGBTQ rights, immigration, black women’s health, black mental health at such organizations as the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Momsrising.org and Silicon Harlem. These social justice champions were brought together with filmmakers, producers and others who can help move key content to market. LINK Unlimited Scholars Honors Kirkland & Ellis as This Year’s DreamKeepers Award Recipient LINK Unlimited Scholars is Chicago’s only college and career success organization focused solely on African-American Youth.

This one-of-a-kind program’s mission is to connect economically disadvantaged African American high school students with mentors, resources and foundational skills required for success as they advance into, through and beyond college. LINK has served more than 2,400 scholars since its inception in 1966 and boasts a 100% college acceptance rate for the past 17 years and counting.

HOPLEAF HOSTS 3RD ANNUAL “PEIRCE DAY” ANDERSONVILLE (CHICAGO)

– Sunday, April 29, 2018 the Hopleaf Bar for the third consecutive year, host “Peirce Day” from Noon2am. 100% of gross receipts will be donated to Helen C. Peirce School of International Studies, a local CPS school located at 1423 West Bryn Mawr. Hopleaf will be offering its normal menu during normal business hours.

Over the past two years, Hopleaf Bar, the Andersonville establishment owned by Michael Roper and Louise Molnar, raised over $100,000 to support arts enrichment programming at Peirce School, including dance, art, and after school programming. Secured Party is not now, nor has Secured Party ever been, an accommodation party, nor a surety, for the purported debtor, i.e. "STEPHEN OLIVER COBB," nor for any derivative of, nor for any variation in the spelling of, said name, nor for any other juristic person, and is so-indemnified and held harmless by Debtor, i.e. "STEPHEN OLIVER COBB," in Holdharmless and Indemnity Agreement No. SOC092653HHIA01, dated the Fourteenth Day of the Second Month in the Year of Our Lord One Thousand Nine Hundred Seventyone against any and all claims, legal actions, orders, warrants, judgments, demands, liabilities, losses, depositions, summonses, lawsuits, costs, fines, liens, levies, penalties, damages, interests, and expenses whatsoever, both absolute and contingent, as are due and as might become due, now existing and as might hereafter arise, and as might be suffered by, imposed on, and incurred by Debtor for any and every reason, purpose, and cause whatsoever. Self-executing Contract/Security Agreement in Event of Unauthorized Use: By this Copyright Notice, both the juristic person and the agent of said juristic person, hereinafter jointly and severally "User," consent and agree that any use of STEPHEN OLIVER COBB® other than authorized use as set forth above constitutes unauthorized use, counterfeiting, of Secured Party's common-law copyrighted property, contractually binds User,

renders this Copyright Notice a Security Agreement wherein User is debtor and Stephen Oliver Cobb ® is Secured Party, and signifies that User: (1) grants Secured Party a security interest in all of User's assets, land, and personal property, and all of User's interest in assets, land, and personal property, in the sum certain amount of $500,000.00 per each occurrence of use of the common-law-copyrighted tradename/trade-mark STEPHEN OLIVER COBB®, as well as for each and every occurrence of use of any and all derivatives of, and variations in the spelling of, STEPHEN OLIVER COBB®, plus costs, plus triple damages; (2) authenticates this Security Agreement wherein User is debtor and Stephen Oliver Cobb ® is Secured Party, and wherein User pledges all of User's assets, land, consumer goods, farm products, inventory, equipment, money, investment property, commercial tort claims, letters of credit, letter-of-credit rights, chattel paper, instruments, deposit accounts, accounts, documents, and general intangibles, and all User's interest in all such foregoing property, now owned and hereafter acquired, now existing and hereafter arising, and wherever located, as collateral for securing User's contractual obligation in favor of Secured Party for User's unauthorized use of Secured Party's common-law-copyrighted property; (3) consents and agrees with Secured Party's filing of a UCC Financing Statement in the UCC filing office, as well as in any county recorder's office, wherein User is debtor and Stephen Oliver Cobb ® is Secured Party; (4) consents and agrees that said UCC Financing Statement described above in paragraph "(3)'' is a continuing financing statement, and further consents and agrees with Secured Party's filing of any continuation statement necessary for maintaining Secured Party's perfected security interest in all of User's property and interest in property, pledged as collateral in this Security Agreement and described above in paragraph "(2)," until User's contractual obligation theretofore incurred has been fully satisfied; (5) consents and agrees with Secured Party's filing of any UCC Financing Statement, as described above in paragraphs "(3)" and "(4)," as well as the filing of any Security Agreement, as described above in paragraph "(2),'' in the UCC filing office, as well as in any county recorder's office; (6) consents and agrees that any and all such filings described in paragraphs "(4)" and "(5)" above are not, and may not be considered, bogus, and that User will not claim that any such filing is bogus; (7) waives all defenses; and (8) appoints Secured Party as Authorized Representative for User, effective upon User's default re User's contractual obligations in favor of Secured Party as set forth below under "Payment Terms" and "Default Terms," granting Secured Party full authorization and power for engaging in any and all actions on behalf of User including, but not limited by, authentication of a record on behalf of User, as Secured Party, in Secured Party's sole discretion, deems appropriate, and User further consents and agrees that this appointment of Secured Party as Authorized Representative for User, effective upon User's default, is irrevocable and coupled with a security interest. User further consents and agrees with all of the following additional terms of Self-executing Contract/Security Agreement in Event of Unauthorized Use: Payment Terms: In accordance with fees for unauthorized use of STEPHEN OLIVER COBB® as set forth above, User hereby consents and agrees that User shall pay Secured Party all unauthorized-use fees in full within ten (10) days of the date User is sent Secured Party's invoice, hereinafter "Invoice," itemizing said fees. Default Terms: In event of non-payment in full of all unauthorized-use fees by User within ten (10) days of date Invoice is sent, User shall be deemed in default and: (a) all of User's property and property pledged as collateral by User, as set forth in above in paragraph "(2)," immediately becomes, i.e. is, property of Secured Party; (b) Secured Party is appointed User's Authorized Representative as set forth above in paragraph "(8)"; and (c) User consents and agrees that Secured Party may take possession of, as well as other-
