Students of color from around the country are calling for the new Secretary of Education to publicly acknowledge these demands. Our Turn, a 501(c)(3), elevates the voices of young people in the fight for educational equity. Our Turn Action Network, a 501(c)(4), deploys policy advocacy efforts for the achievement of educational justice.

Barrett Griffith, a student organizer of Our Turn, Charlotte, NC, feels that Biden’s position on achieving racial justice relates mostly to the campaign for educational justice. “When he says, we must ‘achieve racial justice and root out systemic racism in this country,’ the first thing I can think of is decolonizing school curriculums,” said Griffith.

“How can we battle racial injustice if it is instilled through America’s Education System? Is biased education not a pillar of systemic racism itself?”

FOOD INDUSTRY WILL EXPERIENCE SOLID GROWTH IN 2021 After suffering a $125 billion decline (-8%) in 2020 due to the dramatic $220 billion (-27%) downturn in foodservice, Pentallect, a leading food industry consultancy, forecasts that food industry sales will increase by $145 billion, or 10%, in 2021.

Pentallect attributes the rebound to a sharp second half of the year recovery in foodservice following anticipated vaccine rollouts and ongoing strength in many retail sectors.

Bob Goldin, a Pentallect partner, says, “Quick-service restaurants generally held up well but other foodservice segments, including full-service restaurants, have been devastated by the effects of the pandemic. Next year, we are guardedly optimistic that foodservice will begin a multiyear rebound as effective public health measures become more widespread.”

Program prepares students to REACH for the healthcare profession Continued from page 1

Rush Education and Career Hub (REACH), an initiative of Rush University Medical Center, continues its legacy of creating opportunities for African American and Latinx students to gain experience in the healthcare workforce.

The cradle to career pipeline currently serves over 3,000 students from pre-kindergarten to college. And, one of its goals is to create exceptional talent for the healthcare workforce of the future as well as create diversity in the medical field.

Rukiya Curvey Johnson, MBA, who’s the executive director of the Rush Education and Career Hub, said the program extends beyond the inclusion of doctors and nurses. In addition, it incorporates non-clinical and non-patient facing roles, including IT analyst or community research scientist.

“We’re creating opportunities for youth to explore the variety of careers there are. We also create opportunities for access by providing paid internships and mentorship with health professionals and other graduate students who are beginning a journey to the very careers our youth aspire to,” she said.

Moreover, Curvey Johnson said the students in the program are able to build the social capital, connections and networks that help them to achieve their

goals while gaining valuable work experience. As a result, students are prepared for success and are able to access the healthcare industry.

“Everyday we educate, empower and prepare primarily Black and Latinx youth for the future of work. Really thinking about what it means to be on a path to high quality skilled employment and ultimately greater economic well-being,” she said.

Curvey Johnson added, REACH works to support the student’s efforts by providing academic enrichment including financial aid workshops that assist them in finding ways to fund college.

“We’ve had over 90 percent of our high school graduates enroll in college and persist and also have a healthcare or STEM major, and that’s huge,” she said.

Curvey Johnson said the internships are coupled with the department placement, work setting and instruction. “We work with practicing health professionals and college faculty to teach students.

And, the students getting a chance to see the application of the science and math in the healthcare setting, only helps them understand their work better, understand the application and how and why things work,” she said. “We’ve definitely seen students be able to improve their understanding and academic standing based on participation,” she added.

Additionally, Curvey Johnson said that students in the program have been able

to strengthen their writing and communications skills which has helped them to get a jump start on their college applications and personal statements.

Students have to work on a research project based on a real world challenge.

They present that project to healthcare staff at Rush. They can also get an industry recognized credential, certification, which includes phlebotomy or EKG tech.

“Those are things that help, in a lot of ways, that help students build a sense of self-efficacy. They are able to see themselves doing this work and that helps them, and kinds of motivates them in other ways and strengthens their study skills and kind of lets them see the value in their academic work,” she added.

Curvey Johnson said the goal is to adequately staff healthcare systems in Black and Latinx communities. She said access to care can be a matter of life or death in these communities.

“We want to see more Black youth with high skilled jobs and able to address society’s most pressing health challenges,” she said.

A college information session will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 6. Applications are open for College Career Pathways, Center for Community Health Equity Research Fellows. The deadline is Friday, Feb. 19.

New Study: Frequent, rapid testing could turn national COVID-19 tide within weeks Testing half the population weekly with inexpensive, rapid-turnaround COVID-19 tests would drive the virus toward elimination within weeks—even if those tests are significantly less sensitive than gold-standard clinical tests, according to a new study recently published by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and University of Colorado Boulder researchers.

Such a strategy could lead to “personalized stay-at-home orders” without shutting down restaurants, bars, retail stores, and schools, the authors said.

“Our big picture finding is that, when it comes to public health, it’s better to have a less sensitive test with results today than a more sensitive one with results tomorrow,” said lead author Daniel Larremore, an assistant professor of computer science at CU Boulder. “Rather than telling everyone to stay home so you can be sure that one person who is sick doesn’t spread it, we could give only the contagious people stay-at-home orders so everyone else can go about their lives.”

For the study, which was published online November 20, 2020 in Science Advances, Larremore teamed up with collaborators at CU’s BioFrontiers Institute and Harvard Chan School to explore whether test sensitivity, frequency, or turnaround time is most important to curb the spread of COVID-19.

The researchers scoured available literature on how viral load climbs and falls inside the body during an infection, when people tend to experience symptoms, and when they become contagious.

They then used mathematical modeling to forecast the impact of screening with different kinds of tests on three hypothetical scenarios: in 10,000 individuals; in a university-type setting of 20,000 people; and in a city of 8.4 million.

When it came to curbing spread, they found that frequency and turnaround time are much more important than test sensitivity.

For instance, in one scenario in a large city, widespread twice-weekly testing with a rapid but less sensitive test reduced the degree of infectiousness, or R0 (“R naught”), of the virus by 80%. But twice-weekly testing with a more sensitive PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test, which takes up to 48 hours to return results, reduced infectiousness by only 58%. In other scenarios, when the amount of testing was the same, the rapid test always reduced infectiousness better than the slower, more sensitive PCR test.

That’s because about two-thirds of infected people have no symptoms and as they await their results, they continue to spread the virus.

“This paper is one of the first to show we should worry less about test sensitivity and, when it comes to public health, prioritize frequency and turnaround,” said senior co-author Roy Parker, director of the BioFrontiers Institute and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator.

and saving lives.

In one scenario, in which 4% of individuals in a city were already infected, rapid testing three out of four people every three days reduced the number ultimately infected by 88% and was “sufficient to drive the epidemic toward extinction within six weeks.”

The study comes as companies and academic research centers are developing low-cost, rapid turnaround tests that could be deployed in large public settings or commercialized for do-it-yourself use.

Sensitivity levels vary widely. Antigen tests require a relatively high viral load— about 1,000 times as much virus compared to the PCR test—to detect an infection.

Another test, known as RT-lamp (reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification), can detect the virus at around 100 times as much virus compared to the PCR. The benchmark PCR test typically provided by medical professionals requires as little as 5,000 to 10,000 viral RNA copies per milliliter of sample, meaning it can catch the virus very early or very late.

In the past, federal regulators and the public have been reluctant to embrace rapid tests out of concern that they may miss cases early in infection. But, in reality, an infected person can go from 5,000 particles to 1 million viral RNA copies in 18 to 24 hours, said Parker.

“There is a very short window, early in infection, in which the PCR will detect the virus but something like an antigen or LAMP test won’t,” Parker said.

And during that time, the person often isn’t contagious, he said. The authors recently used these findings to call for a shift in the way we think about test sensitivity in the New England Journal of Medicine.

“These rapid tests are contagiousness tests,” said senior co-author Michael Mina, an assistant professor of epidemiology and a faculty member in the Center for Communicable Disease Dynamics at Harvard Chan School. “They are extremely effective

in detecting COVID-19 when people are contagious.”

They are also affordable, he added. The rapid tests can cost as little as $1 each and return results in 15 minutes. Some PCR tests can take several days.

Mina envisions a day when the government sends simple, cheap DIY tests to every home in the United States. Even if half of Americans tested themselves weekly and self-isolated if positive, the result would be profound, he said.

“Within a few weeks we could see this outbreak going from huge numbers of cases to very manageable levels,” Mina said.

Rapid testing could also be the key to breathing life back into former superspreader threats like football stadiums, concert venues, and airports, with patrons testing themselves on the way in and still wearing masks as a precautionary measure, Larremore said.

“Less than .1% of the current cost of this virus would enable frequent testing for the whole of the U.S. population for a year,” said Mina, referencing a recent economic analysis published by the National Bureau of Economic Research.

The authors say they are heartened to see that several countries have already begun testing all of their citizens, and are hopeful that the new U.S. administration has named rapid testing as a priority. The Food and Drug Administration recently approved the first at-home rapid test.

“It’s time to shift the mentality around testing from thinking of a COVID test as something you get when you think you are sick to thinking of it as a vital tool to break transmission chains and keep the economy open,” Larremore said.

Hershey Invests $1.5 Million in the Thurgood Marshall College Fund The Hershey Company (NYSE: HSY) will invest $1.5 million in the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) to establish a scholarship endowment, with the goal to increase that to $3 million over the next ten years. The endowment will be used for students pursuing degrees in food science in TMCF-memberschools, which include public colleges that provide advanced education for underrepresented populations.

Acclaimed Chicago Southside Native to Fill Position Poet Laureate for the State of Illinois First Lady MK Pritzker recently announced the selection of Angela Jackson as the next Poet Laureate for the State of Illinois.

Jackson is the fifth Illinoisan to hold the title, an honorary position selected by a committee of experts and subsequently appointed by the Governor.

Jackson is an accomplished and award-winning poet, novelist, and playwright, who has published three chapbooks and four volumes of poetry.

As Illinois’ next poet laureate, Jackson will work to promote poetry at the state and national level. She will join only four other esteemed poets who have previously held this coveted title.

The first Illinois Poet Laureate, Howard B. Austin, was named in 1936. The three other poets who have held the title are Carl Sandburg (1962-67), Gwendolyn Brooks (19682000), and Kevin Stein (2003-2017).

In June, Governor Pritzker posthumously named John Prine an honorary Poet Laureate.

“Illinois has a proud history of poets who have given us reason for hope in dark times, offered poignant insight into our own humanity and delivered profound social critiques, and as I considered the nominees to be our next Poet Laureate, all of these qualities were important in making the final choice,” said First Lady MK Pritzker, Honorary Chair and Final Judge of the 2020 Illinois Poet Laureate Search Committee. “Members of the committee nominated astounding talents from our state, and I’m grateful for their work. In June, the Governor and First Lady Pritzker announced the formation of the 2020 Illinois Poet Laureate Search Committee to fill

the position that has been vacant since late 2017.

The committee, comprised of poets, writers, and academics from across the state, reviewed nominations submitted by the public and recommended three finalists to be the state’s next Poet Laureate.

“Illinois has a proud history of influential poets and I’m proud to continue this tradition by formally appointing our state’s next Poet Laureate,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “Angela Jackson is an acclaimed poet and writer and her expansive breadth of work has already inspired so many. I know her words will have a profound impact on the residents of our state as well as the next generation of aspiring poets.”

“Angela Jackson’s poems dwell in fervid topographies of family and myth, heart and tongue,” said previous Illinois Poet Laureate Kevin Stein. “Her lines bristle with the melody of conversation and soulful blues, her voice unwaveringly human.”

Jackson was born in Greenville, Mississippi and raised on Chicago’s Southside and educated at Northwestern University and the University of Chicago. She was a 20year member of the Organization of Black American Culture (OBAC) Writers Workshop, succeeding the late Hoyt W. Fuller as its Chair.

Of Angela’s volumes, Dark Legs and Silk Kisses: The Beatitudes of the Spinners was awarded the Carl Sandburg Award and the Chicago Sun-Times/Friends of Literature Book of the Year Award. And All These Roads Be Luminous: Poems Selected and New was nominated for the National Book Award. It Seems Like a Mighty Long Time was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, the Pen/Open Book Award, a finalist for the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award, and a finalist for the Milt Kessler Poetry Prize.

Mosley’s works have earned him some of the literary industry’s highest honors, including being inducted into the New York State Writers Hall of Fame in 2013 and named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America in 2016.

Beyond mystery, Mosley’s works span a range of genres including literary fiction, science fiction, young adult, nonfiction, plays, erotica and more.
