NEWS briefly EDUCATION COVID COLLABORATIVE ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP WITH AD COUNCIL ON $50 MILLION VACCINE EDUCATION CAMPAIGN COVID Collaborative recently announced a partnership with the Ad Council on an unprecedented $50 million vaccine education campaign. This initiative will represent one of the largest public education campaigns in history.

According to a recent survey fielded by the COVID Collaborative, a majority of Americans (86%) believe that a vaccine will be effective in curbing the virus. Yet the survey found that only one-third (34%) say they will get vaccinated themselves.

A new poll released recently by the COVID Collaborative, NAACP and UnidosUS showed that trust in vaccines is particularly low in Black and Latinx communities, with only 14% of Black Americans and 34% of Latinx Americans trusting that a vaccine will be safe.

“COVID-19 is disproportionately impacting Black Americans, and generational trauma has led to massive distrust of vaccines,” said Derrick Johnson, CEO of the NAACP. “The national education campaign will be a critical step in providing Black communities with the information they need to rebuild trust and get vaccinated.”

RESEARCH ON MINORITY HEALTH BRINGS ‘OPPORTUNITY APPROACH’ TO REDRESSING RACIAL AND ETHNIC INEQUITIES The Health Opportunity and Equity (HOPE) Initiative has launched a platform that supports a new narrative on health inequities and provides achievable pathways for states to eliminate health disparities. In the midst of a national reckoning on race and the COVID-19 pandemic, HOPE data portrays an America that would be dramatically different if the impact of racism embedded in our society was eliminated and everyone experienced equal social, economic and health opportunities.

HOPE data demonstrates the impact of the nation’s legacy of systemic racism that has left low-income and communities of color disenfranchised from opportunities and contributed to their poor health. Led by the National Collaborative for Health Equity (NCHE), the HOPE Initiative is a collaboration with Texas Health Institute and Virginia Commonwealth University’s (VCU) Center on Society and Health.

Dr. Derek Chapman, Interim Director of the VCU’s Center on Society and Health, said, “Policymakers, advocates, and other stakeholders can use the HOPE data to measure how far states must go to achieve equitable opportunities for health and wellbeing, and inform policy solutions and practices that advance health equity.”

CTA exposes students to trades careers through virtual event Continued from page 1

Chicago Transit Authority, along with Walsh-Fluor, continues to expose young people to careers in the skilled trades through the ACE Trades Day. This year, it was a virtual event where more than 30 students watched testimonials from tradespeople who are working on CTA’s Red and Purple Modernization (RPM) Project. Students were able to hear firsthand what it is like to work on the project and how the workers started in the industry.

CTA’s Red and Purple Modernization Project consists of constructing a new bypass north of Belmont Station, followed by a Red and Purple line track structure rebuild, between Belmont and Newport/ Cornelia. The project will also completely rebuild the Lawrence, Argyle, Berwyn and Bryn Mawr Red Line stations. It will include tracks, support structures and the installation of a new signal system, between Belmont and Howard.

Tammy Chase, the spokesperson for RPM, said the goal of ACE Trades Day is to bring opportunity and information to Chicago Public School students. She said with a virtual learning situation, there are challenges with letting students know about what types of careers are out there and how to access them.

Chase said it is good for students to hear from people who work in these fields. And, also find out how to get into an apprenticeship or pre-apprenticeship program. Chase said there are a lot of people in need of help and who need doors to open.

development effort, and that includes creating new training and job opportunities for people, and that includes communities across the city,” she said.

“It’s more about than just finding people jobs, we want to help, through the RPM Project, help people get the skills they need so they can have careers.”

Alondra Santos is an intern at Walsh-Fluor and a former ACE mentee. Santos got involved in the ACE Mentoring program while attending Jones College Prep. Santos said the experience was great and enabled her to learn about architecture, construction and engineering.

“All the mentors were very insightful and were able to answer all our questions. My favorite part was working alongside my mentors for the ACE projects and seeing their approach to what we were working on,” she said.

Santos, a third-year student at University of Illinois at Chicago, said her experience as an ACE Mentee allowed

her to explore different industries. She said it also helped in her decision to study civil engineering. Santos added being in the program had other positive effects. First, communicating with people in the construction, architecture and engineering fields became more comfortable for her. She said the program also helped her to transition into an office environment.

“The ACE program is beneficial because they help set the foundation for a successful career in any of those industries. ACE also offers graduating seniors scholarships and helps students secure internships,” she said.

Santos added the ACE community has been helpful and enabled her to build a network and receive guidance from a mentor. She said other students who are interested in architecture, construction and engineering should participate in the program because it gives them an opportunity to explore those industries and see how other disciplines work together on projects.

Santos has been working on the asset management team at Walsh-Fluor as an intern. “I have been lucky to get a great understanding of the project through the work I have done,” she said. “I’m hoping to continue to gain experience in the construction management environment.”

CTA continues to provide opportunities through networking events with Walsh-Fluor, Construction Talks webinars, the CTA Elevating Future Scholarship Program and virtual job fairs.

New research shows Black girls outperform their peers in confidence and leadership potential, yet they continue to lack opportunities to lead Ruling Our eXperiences, Inc. (ROX) has released its latest national research report, Girls, Diversity and The Future, which reflects insights from 10,678 5th through 12th grade girls.

The study by the leading national experts on programming and research for girls offers a glimpse into the world of today’s girls and their unique beliefs, behaviors and barriers across demographics.

Research findings include: l Despite embodying key traits of leadership, Black girls face a world that does not embrace their leadership in school, government or corporate America. Nationally, Black women make up just 4% of school superintendents, 8% of our country’s elected officials and there are no Black female CEOs among Fortune 500 companies.

This research indicates that when compared to their peers, Black girls are the most equipped and eager to lead. They confidently embrace being in charge and are not afraid to express their opinions, yet they face barriers to leadership roles. l Black girls have higher rates of confidence and belief in their academic abilities compared to their peers, yet are the most likely to experience harsher school discipline. Black girls experience an increase in confidence from elementary school to middle school, while all other groups of girls experience a sharp decline. Similarly, Black girls are more likely to believe they are smart enough for their dream job compared to their same-age peers, and 81% report that their teachers treat them like they are smart. Despite all of this, Black girls are more likely to have negative discipline-related experiences in school. l When girls of color are in the majority, they are more likely to believe they are smart and ca-

When girls of color are not learning alongside other girls of color, they feel less confident in their abilities and opportunities.

“Our data reinforces that we live in a society that does not always openly embrace girls and women who share their opinions, as this can

often be viewed as aggressive. Sadly, this reality is amplified for Black girls,” said Dr. Sibyl West, co-author of the study, co-director of the Frederick Douglass Institute for Intercultural Research and associate professor of counselor education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. “When a Black girl speaks her mind, she can be labeled as hostile, disagreeable or rude. Her opinions and ideas can be dismissed or ignored more often than her peers. This data is showing us that Black girls are ready to lead and possess key traits and characteristics of leadership, but face a

world that doesn’t embrace their leadership.”

Dr. Lisa Hinkelman, founder/CEO of Ruling Our eXperiences (ROX) and co-author of this study said, “We have a responsibility to seize this critical moment in history. In Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, little girls everywhere finally have the chance to see a woman of color in the White House. NO TIME TO REST

Now that the 2020 election is over, people have been celebrating in the streets across America. But as we survey the rubble that is left of an America battered by the last four years under a Trump administration, we see there is a lot of work to be done.

Children are still in cages along our southern borders. Police murders of innocent people of color are still rampant. Conservative politicians refusing to wear masks during the COVID-19 pandemic and yelling “My body, my choice,” are prepared to imprison any woman who exercises her reproductive rights over her own body.

America is in a dangerous place.

Donald Trump has emboldened and encouraged the inner demons of white supremacists to act out their hatred toward anyone they consider to be an “other.” The vast majority of white, self-proclaimed Christian evangelists have abandoned any

pretense of human decency and make it clear that brotherly love and Christian charity are not meant for people of color.

White middle-class Americans, coded as “suburban moms,” have demonstrated by a majority of their votes that they are willing to accept the brand of raw racism that Trump represents. This, while engaging in “woke performances” to make an outward show of believing in human decency towards all.

Joe Biden’s election has not bent the arc of the moral universe toward justice. It has merely flattened it back to its previous course of injustice.

Joe has a history of making common cause with racial conservatives, many of whom were segregationists. And we should not wait to see if his words of equality are turned into dust by his actions. Instead, we must stay on the move and continue to push, and push hard, for our own freedoms.

Yes, communities of color are ex-

hausted. It is understandable why we are tired. We barely eked out a win after a bruising political battle with a hateful and determined segment of this country that pins its rising quality of life on our oppression. Now we want to take a break from this constant struggle, sit back and feel good about what we have accomplished so far. But this is no time to rest.

For us to rest now would be as disastrously careless as an athletic team celebrating its stellar performance during the first period of play and then not showing up for the remainder of the game.

We must be mindful of the history of our continued struggle. In the 1960s, the civil rights agenda was being pushed forward and the sense of accomplishment in the Black community was exhilarating. But although we celebrated the progress we had made at the time, we knew that the goal of universal equality had not been achieved, and we fought on. www.citizennewspapergroup.com

The struggle must continue because victory has not yet been won.

We have more people of color in elected office than ever before.

But now that they are in office, we cannot sit back and wait for them to deliver. We must ask them, “What can we do to help you deliver for us?” We must partner with the people we put in office.

One of the persistent complaints voiced by Black elected officials is that when they sit in their city council or school board meetings, seldom do they see the people who put them there. This is a problem on the local, state and federal levels of government. It is difficult to make a convincing argument on behalf of people who do not bother to show up in support of their own demands.

And it is particularly difficult when other elected officials, who are not interested in our welfare, must be moved to support our interests.

anything more than a beginning – a first step on a long journey towards achieving a goal. So, sure, stop and take a deep breath. Stretch your political muscles and loosen them up.

Straighten your back and strengthen your resolve. And then take the next steps towards making this country and this world what we want it to be.

Mutual of America Announces Five Recipients of the 2020 Community Partnership Award Mutual of America has announced the recipients of its 2020 Community Partnership Award, marking the 25th anniversary of the prestigious national competition.

This year, five nonprofit organizations were selected for their outstanding contributions to society, in partnership with public, private and other social sector organizations.

One, the 100 Scholars Robotics Alliance, received the Thomas J. Moran Award, which is given to the national award-winning program and includes $100,000 and a documentary video about the program. Four organizations were named honorable mention recipients, and each received $50,000.

Museum’s 78th Annual Christmas Around The World And Holidays of Light Exhibits Highlight More Than 40 Countries And Cultures The Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago’s (MSI) Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light exhibits has returned, highlighting the rich customs of more than 40 countries and cultures.

Explore trees and displays decorated by volunteers from Chicago’s diverse communities and learn about holidays from across the globe. Daily capacity is limited, and timed-entry tickets are required for this 78th annual tradition.

Trees and displays are more spread out than ever before inside the museum to ensure physically distancing. Guests can enjoy the comfort and space MSI has to offer through its nearly half million square feet all while learning about the traditional holiday celebrations from around the world, and new offerings including: • Traditional Outfits: New displays feature six traditional outfits shared with MSI by volunteer groups representing Kenya, Norway, Scotland, Hungary, Japan and Ecuador.

• Member Holiday Mornings: Every Saturday now through January 2, 2021, MSI Members can explore Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light before the museum opens to the public.

• Tree-topper Stars: Star sculptures stand at the base of MSI’s Grand Tree honoring the volunteers that were not able to participate in this year’s exhibits due to the ongoing

pandemic.

• Holiday Store: Full of gifts and festive trinkets for family and friends, including unique ornaments representing cultures from around the world. Some items also available for purchase online.

Holidays of Light also offers rich histories of celebrations honoring light and enlightenment, including Lunar New Year, Diwali, Kwanzaa, Ramadan, Hanukkah, and St. Lucia Day. At the center of these exhibits stands the 45-foot-tall, floor-toceiling Grand Tree decorated with more than 30,000 lights, offering photo opportunities with loved ones.

Established in 1942, Christmas Around the World began with a single tree to show solidarity with fellow Allied nations during WWII, symbolizing that there is more that unites us than divides us. For the past 78 years, this exhibit has become a Chicago tradition, connecting guests through the spirit of the holiday season and the sharing of each other’s heritages.

Travel spending in the U.S. is expected to finish the year 45% down from 2019 levels, and will still not have returned to its pre-pandemic strength by 2024, according to the latest figures released by the U.S. Travel Association.

The new 2020 projected travel spending figure of $617 billion is slightly worse than U.S. Travel’s previous forecast released in July ($622 billion)—and is a precipitous drop from the $1.13 trillion spent on travel in the U.S. overall in 2019.

The nosedive reflects a decline of 34% in domestic leisure travel spending—but even sharper drop-offs in the lucrative domestic business (55%) and international inbound (77%) markets.

Travel is by far the industry hardest hit by the ongoing fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, currently accounting for 33% of overall unemployment in the U.S. Nearly 40%—3.5 million—of all direct travel jobs have vanished over the past seven months, even after taking into account modest growth over the summer. Another million direct travel jobs—bringing the total to 4.5 million or 50% of pre-pandemic levels—are expected to disappear by year’s end without another round of congressional relief.

It is unknown how many of those job losses will become permanent.

Large numbers of travel businesses were unable to access early rounds of federal pandemic relief—and many businesses that did receive temporary aid have exhausted their relief funds.

Washington’s inability to reach a

deal on a new round of relief prior to the November 3 election further devastated the travel industry, and travel leaders are strongly urging policymakers not to wait for the new Congress and administration to take office before advancing another package.

“A lot of businesses that need help to retain and rehire their people won’t be there in January if we wait until the next Congress to get more aid passed,” said U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Roger Dow. “The pain among travel employers is extremely acute, and so is the frustration that Washington has been unable to act so far given the size and obviousness of this problem.”

U.S. Travel continues to recommend specific policy actions that should be pursued by Congress immediately to help stave off further economic damage and job loss, among them: l Enhance and extend the Paycheck Protection Program through the end of 2021, allow for a second draw on loans, and expand eligibility to include 501(c)(6) and quasi-governmental destination marketing organizations. l Enhance and extend the Coronavirus Relief Fund through at least the end of 2021. l Provide additional emergency assistance to U.S. airports.

U.S. Travel is also a founding member of the COVID RELIEF NOW Coalition, a large and diverse group of private- and public-sector interests that continues to issue urgent calls for legislative action.

The P&G brands partner with CVS and UNCF to award $200,000 in scholarships to Black women pursuing degrees in STEM subjects Black women have historically been underrepresented in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce. P&G brands Royal Oils by Head & Shoulders and Gold Series from Pantene are determined to help change that by supporting the growth and development of future Black female STEM-focused innovators through a new initiative.

Together with CVS this fall, P&G will award $200,000 in scholarships to Black women pursuing a degree in STEM subjects at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and UNCF member schools, facilitated through long-time higher education partner UNCF (United Negro College Fund).

The Rooted in Science scholarships will be administered by UNCF, an organization dedicated to helping as many talented, deserving Black men and women as possible get to and through college successfully. To apply for a scholarship, please visit https://uncf.org/scholarships Applications will be open now through January 4, 2021, and recipients will be announced on January 28, 2021. There will be 16 scholarship recipients who will be awarded $5,000 a year for up to two years.

Scholarship funds are intended to help college juniors and seniors with expenses associated with the pursuit of their degrees as 45.9% of Black students enrolled in four-year public institutions complete their degrees in six years.

This is partially because 65% of Black college students are independent, which means they must balance obtaining a degree with full-time work, family responsibilities and more.
