USF SOCIAL WORKERS PRESENT AT THE 64TH ANNUAL COUNCIL University of St. Francis social work educators Dr. Audrey Davis, teaching instructor, and Dr. Laura Honegger, assistant professor, presented on Sunday, November 11th at the 64th Annual Council on Social Work Education Conference in Orlando, Florida. The national conference, which took place this year from November 8th- 11th, is attended by over 2,500 social work educators each year. It fosters and facilitates best practices in areas of curriculum development and research in social work professionals.

ANTIBIOTICS CAN’T KILL THE COMMON COLD Antibiotics save lives and are critical tools for treating a number of common and more serious infections. However, antibiotics are often used when they should not, which can cause them to stop working.

Up to 50 percent of all prescribed antibiotics are not needed or are not effective as prescribed. Each year in the United States, at least two million people become infected with antibiotic-resistant bacteria and at least 23,000 die.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), antibiotics do not work on viruses, such as those that cause colds, flu, or runny noses, even if the mucus is thick, yellow, or green. And taking antibiotics will not make you feel better if you have a virus. Antibiotics are only needed for treating infections caused by bacteria, but even some bacterial infections get better without antibiotics, including many sinus infections and some ear infections.

LAWSUIT FILED AGAINST ONLINE SELLERS OF E-CIGARETTES AND ‘E-JUICES’ Mayor Emanuel joined Corporation Counsel Ed Siskel, Business Affairs and Consumer Protection Commissioner (BACP) Rosa Escareno, and Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) Commissioner Julie Morita, MD and filed a lawsuit recently against eight online sellers of e-cigarette products for illegally selling their products to Chicago youth. The lawsuit, which was filed in the Circuit Court of Cook County, is one of several initiatives designed to combat the illicit marketing and sales of e-cigarette products to Chicago’s young people.

Illinois Representative La Shawn Ford (8th District) recently held a press conference at the Sankofa Cultural Arts and Business Center, 5820 W. Chicago Ave., to announce that he is running for Mayor of Chicago.

“This really started from west side elected officials encouraging me to consider running for Mayor of the City of Chicago. Then it was followed by a host of grassroots organizations and people saying that they thought that I would make a great mayor and starting to circulate petitions. From there, we have been meeting with lots of people to put together the campaign,” said Ford.

During the announcement event, Ford was surrounded by family, friends, and supporters and several attendees spoke out on Ford’s behalf.

“It was very humbling to have so many people.

We had over 350 people and we couldn’t get everyone in because there was no space and no

parking. It was really a feeling of one Chicago coming together to bring about change and that was a great feeling,” said Ford.

Ford has served as a Democratic member of the Illinois House of Representative since 2007 and said that he is excited to have an opportunity to take what he has learned in Springfield to the City of Chicago.

“I have really enjoyed the work that I do and I’m very proud of the relationship that I’ve built to get a lot of progressive things done,” said Ford.

“To be able to take the experience that I have had in Springfield to Chicago only allows me to work with more people and really advance a real progressive agenda that includes everyone in Chicago.”

With so many candidates currently campaigning to become the next Mayor of Chicago, Ford said that what sets him apart from the rest is his desire for fairness and his commitment to serving the city’s residents.

“My entire philosophy and moral compass is fairness,” said Ford. “I am 100 percent a

people’s candidate and that’s what I want for the City of Chicago, to have a Mayor that is for all the people and to put an end to the closed circle of influence that the City has. For too long only a certain few have been included in the circle of Chicago’s success and that will end with me.”

The major issues that Ford plans to address as Mayor of Chicago include, expanding opportunities for jobs, improving health across the city, improving nutrition and exercise, improving education, promoting small businesses, securing housing and preventing foreclosures, supporting our troops and veterans, safeguarding our environment, addressing the budget deficit, increasing public safety and decreasing violence in our communities, improving the quality of community life, and advancing citizenship, social justice, and restorative justice, as listed on the Ford for Chicago website.

Ford Honors Over A Dozen Unsung Heroes For Their Work In Chicago’s African American Communities

Ford Motor Company recently hosted the Freedom Unsung Awards at the South Shore Cultural Center, 7059 S. South Shore Dr., to honor Chicago activist that have made significant contributions to the African American communities across the city.

“Ford has always honored people for their legacy and we have honored a lot of very famous people.

We had an exhibit on the women of the Civil Rights Movement that toured the country for four years and we realized as we did that and as we do other programs that there are so many heroes in the community that never ask for anything and are just doing what they are doing,” said Pamela Alexander, director of community development for the Ford Motor Company Fund.

The Freedom Unsung Awards were made possible through a grant from the Ford Motor Company Fund which is the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company. The award recipients were all nominated by other Chicagoans for their dedication to serving and uplifting the African American community in Chicago. The Freedom Unsung Awards were created specifically to highlight community leaders that are not frequently recognized for the work that they do.

After making previous stops in Anchorage, Atlanta, and even in Houston where they held a special Unsung Heroes of Hurricane Harvey, Ford decided to come to Chicago to honor our communities

“We were talking about cities that we definitely wanted to go to and you hear so much about Chicago in the news, some of it negative, but anyone who spends any time here knows there is an amazing community here and there are a lot of people doing great things here and there are a lot of really wonderful things about Chicago.

are amazing things happening here,” said Alexander.

One local honoree, Dr. Paul Phillips, is the founder of the Better Man Than Me Foundation which is a nonprofit dedicated to providing young men with the day-to-day skills needed to become successful adults. Dr. Phillips has been doing community work since the age of 12 and has been mentoring young people in Chicago for over 30 years.

For these many reasons, he was selected as one of Ford’s Freedom Unsung Heroes.

“I am honored and humbled.

What I do I don’t do for recognition but it’s always good to be recognized for my efforts. I’m really honored to be here and not just because it’s me but because I’m also able to rub elbows with other people that are doing good work in the community so I’m in good company,” said Phillips.

Many more local activists received Freedom Unsung Awards including Lynana Funches from Think Outside Da Block and Asiaha Butler from the Resident Association of Greater Englewood.

Armed with a blue, folding lawn chair, Englewood resident Jacqueline Hendricks arrived early at a South Side McDonald’s to be first in line for the 19th Annual Food for the Body & Spirit turkey giveaway sponsored by the Black McDonald’s Operators Association of Chicago and Northwest Indiana.

She was first in line when the 7 a.m. giveaway began at McDonald’s, 7601 S. Vincennes Ave., where more than 300 people showed up.

“I got here at 4 a.m. to get in line. I beat everyone here including the sun,” said Hendricks, 61. “Every little bit helps nowadays with these food prices and everything costing so much.”

The BMOA hosted the turkey giveaway from Nov. 15-17 at four different McDonald’s including one in Hammond, IN. A total of 500 turkeys were given away at each location and

included sites at 5015 W. Madison St. on the West Side and 4239 W. 167th St. in south suburban Country Club Hills. The three hour event was broadcast live on 1390 AM and hosted by V103 personality Joe Soto.

“This is what giving back to the community looks like. I always enjoy when I can participate in programs that give back to the community,” said Soto. “I think it’s something we should all do as human beings.”

Standing behind Hendricks was her cousin Geraldine Jones, 68, who also arrived at 4 a.m.

“I really think it is a blessing that McDonald’s is doing this. The black community has supported McDonald’s forever and for them to give something back during the holiday is great,” said Jones, a Southeast Side resident. “More black businesses should give back to the community when they can.”

And as happy as Hendricks was to receive a free turkey, she was also sad

because five years ago her mother died.

“I lost my mother October 2013 and I miss her. Every year we would have Thanksgiving dinner at her house and while we still do because I live there, I think about her a lot around this time of the year,” added Hendricks.

One thing different this year at the turkey giveaway was a separate line for veterans. About two-dozen veterans stood in line despite cold temperatures and snow falling and Sunyra Lewis, 57, was first in line.

“Veterans are not acknowledged as much as they should so I’m glad to see somebody cares about us,” said Lewis, a Beverly resident.

Cheryl Taylor owns eight McDonald’s restaurants including the Vincennes Avenue location with her husband Derrick Taylor, president of the BMOA. And even though she is not a veteran, she said it was important for BMOA to show their gratitude to veterans. www.thechicagocitizen.com

Sunyra Lewis is a 57-year-old Army veteran and was first in line to receive a free turkey at the 19th Annual Food for the Body & Spirit event sponsored by the Black McDonald’s Operators Association of Chicago and Northwest Indiana.

“We wanted to acknowledge our veterans and to let them know how much we appreciate their service and what they did on behalf of our country,” said Cheryl Taylor. “Every year, we want to better serve the community and that includes our veterans.”

BMOA member Yolanda Travis knows all too well how veterans are often overlooked by society. She retired from the National Guard after 23 years of service.

“I was a chief master sergeant in the National Guard and I am proud of the service I rendered to our country,”

said Travis. “We need to never forget our veterans. My father was a veteran and he was a great man. So on behalf of the Black McDonald’s Operators Association I salute our veterans and say thank you for your service.”

The Vincennes Avenue McDonald’s is located in the city’s 17th ward and Alderman David Moore was among the volunteers handing out turkeys.

“This is an awesome event. The leadership of BMOA does such great work. ‘Our’ people are still struggling and help is always needed,” said Moore.

For borrowers who don't have access to that kind of support, repayment may feel impossible. Michelle Obama Launches Becoming Book Tour In Chicago With Special Guest, Oprah Winfrey

Former First Lady, Michelle Obama, recently visited Chicago to host the first stop on her book tour for the newly released memoir Becoming

by Micelle Obama. She was joined by Oprah Winfrey who interviewed Obama about the book and her life.

Prior to hosting the event at the United Center, Obama visited the Seminary Co-Op Book Store, 5751 S. Woodlawn Ave., in Hyde Park to greet fans and sign books. The bookstore serves as a significant place for Obama as she and her husband, President Barack Obama, used to live in the neighborhood.

The tell-all memoir from Mrs. Obama gives insight into her experience growing up on the south side of Chicago, her years at Princeton, her early professional life as a lawyer, how she dealt with the death of her father and close friend as a young adult, details of the 2008 presidential election, and many more private moments from her personal life, experiences she has had as a wife and mother, and reflections on the last few decades of her life as she transitioned from an everyday south sider to the First Lady of the United States.

“I’m an ordinary person who found herself on an extraordinary journey. In sharing my story, I hope to help create space for other stories and other voices, to widen the pathway for who belongs and why,” said Michelle Obama in the Epilogue of Becoming.

The 426-page book contains a number of photos of Obama and her family. The photos show her as an infant with her parents and brother, there are photos of Obama in grade school, pictures of her at Princeton, pictures of the Obamas as a young couple and a young family. You can even see photos of her on her wedding day.

“If there’s one thing I’ve learned in life, it’s the power of using your voice. I tried my best to speak the truth and shed light on the stories of people who are often rushed aside,” Obama wrote in Becoming alongside a recent photo of herself at a speaking engagement.

The Becoming book tour is taking place now through Dec. 19 and will be making stops across the country and also traveling to London and Paris. Becoming by Michelle Obama is available wherever books are sold, according to the Becoming website.
