DURBIN, DUCKWORTH, BUSTOS ANNOUNCE MULTI-YEAR EXTENSION FOR QUAD CITIES TO CHICAGO AMTRAK RAIL PROJECT FUNDING US. Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), and U.S. Representative Cheri Bustos (D-IL-17), recently announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued an extension for $177 million in Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) funding for the Amtrak route between Chicago and Moline until December 31, 2024. In June, the members sent a letter to DOT Secretary Elaine Chao that urged DOT to extend the deadline for Illinois to use the $177 million in FRA funding that was secured in Fiscal Year 2010. After being encouraged by negotiations regarding the scope of the project, the members sent another letter in October and again urged for an extension of this crucial funding.

“Today’s announcement gives local communities in the Quad Cities the certainty needed to plan ahead for the new passenger rail service. After years of unnecessary delay, Senator Duckworth, Representative Bustos, and I have pushed hard to make Amtrak in the Quad Cities a reality. The future of this critical Illinois transportation project looks bright,” Durbin said.

As the holiday season quickly approaches, Another Chance Baptist Church, 9550 S. Harvard Ave., has already set its goal of providing new toys for 10,000 children in Chicago this year during its annual Operation Cover Chicago holiday giveaway event. The Operation Cover Chicago holiday giveaway will take place on December 20 at 7 p.m. at the church in Roseland.

Pastor Kenyatta Smith, senior pastor at Another Chance Baptist Church, was raised in Chicago and said that as they have been doing the Operation Cover Chicago holiday giveaway over the last several years, he has noticed that people’s ability to give has been dwindling and the number of families in need has been growing.

This year, they are starting the toy drive before Thanksgiving to make sure they are able to reach their goal of providing

10,000 children with new toys for Christmas this year.

“We’re afraid that people are not giving like they once were and that we may not be able to give toys out this year. We’re starting early just to bring awareness because we’re trying to get toys to 10,000 kids,” said Smith. “With so many people in Chicago, we believe somebody will hear our need and come alongside and help us.”

Smith said that preparation for the Operation Cover Chicago holiday giveaway begins in October and that the toy drive is so important to him because he can relate to the Chicago kids that are impacted by the annual event.

“It’s important to start early because we give out toys and 10,000 new toys are not easy to come by,” said Smith. “I’ll be honest and transparent, I woke up one day as a kid and there were no toys under our Christmas tree. My mission is to make sure that every child I can reach will have the opportunity to have a toy under their

tree.”

Another Chance Baptist Church is accepting donations of new toys for children ages three to 14 and with monetary donations that can be used to purchase new toys. The church has said that a donation of $40 will provide a new toy for one child, $80 will provide toys for two kids, or a donation of $150 will provide toys for a whole family.

“I think the most important thing to know is that those who give a toy will feel good about it but on the other end, some kid at our toy drive on Dec. 20 will come and receive hope by knowing that somebody cares about them and that somebody is thinking about them,” said Smith.

“We want to make sure there is help and that there is hope for them. That’s what we are offering at the toy drive on December 20th, we are offering hope.”

Former LAPD Chief Chosen As Interim Superintendent After City’s Top Cop Announces His Retirement

The unexpected announcement last week by Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson that he will retire next month has led to the selection of an interim police superintendent when the city’s top cop retires.

Johnson will officially retire on Dec. 31 and will be temporarily replaced by former Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck until a permanent superintendent is hired, which Mayor Lori Lightfoot said would happen in the next three to six months.

“After 31 years, it’s time for someone else to pin these four stars to their shoulders. These stars can sometimes feel like carrying the weight of the world,” Johnson said during a Nov. 7 news conference at Police Headquarters with his family by his side. “This job has taken a toll on me. It has taken a toll on my health and my family but my integrity remains intact.”

Lightfoot, who joined Johnson at the news conference said, “The city will always have a debt owed to you for everything you did to keep our streets safe and make our quality of life better,” Lightfoot told Johnson as he started crying. “Chicago is better because Superintendent Johnson called this city his home and dedicated his career to serving it.”

at a Friday news conference, echoed Lightfoot’s sentiments about the superintendent.

“Certainly Superintendent Johnson is owed much credit for crime reduction and improving the overall moral of the police department,” said Taliaferro. “His imprint on this city will forever be remembered.”

Johnson, a former resident of the Cabrini Green public housing complex on the Near North Side, began his career with the Chicago Police Department in 1988 as a beat officer. He was appointed the commander of the 6th District

in 2008, and chief of patrol in 2012 where he stayed until his appointment as superintendent.

“CPD needs strong leadership and I want the next top cop to continue making improvements to public safety and in a department I love,” said Johnson. “Chicago is a safer place than when I was appointed Superintendent in April 2016. People in every neighborhood and on every block trusted me with their safety. I will never forget this job or those that have helped me succeed,” he said.

Nonprofit Celebrates South Side Warehouse Opening With Creative Supply Giveaway

The Creative Chicago Reuse Exchange recently celebrated the opening of its new warehouse in West Englewood by giving away books, school supplies, classroom equipment, and other donated surplus items to Chicago teachers and nonprofit organizations that work with youth. The new warehouse is located on 2124 W. 82nd Pl. in the Envision Unlimited Frick Center.

Creative Chicago Reuse Exchange (CCRx) is a nonprofit organization that works with local and national businesses to source the supplies and equipment that are most needed by teachers and other nonprofit organizations in Chicago. Their goal is to help other organizations and teachers obtain the materials they need to support creative thinking for youth and to reduce waste, according to information provided by CCRx. “CCRX is a nonprofit that I started in order to provide teachers and nonprofits with the surplus supplies that are floating around the city and to

make the connection between people who have things that are too good to toss and the people who need things, but don’t necessarily have the time or the money to get them,” said Barbara Koenen, executive director of CCRx. “We’re trying to create an ethos of reusing as opposed to always buying something new and for people to be creative with the things that are around them. So, you might use something for exactly the purpose it was made for but maybe you can be creative and use something in a different way.”

The new warehouse in West Englewood is open for teachers and nonprofit workers, with identification showing that they work in Chicago, to come and receive supplies on Wednesdays from noon to 6 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is another location at the Chicago Teachers Union Center, 1901 W. Carroll Ave. that is open by appointment only.

“The open house was to say, ‘here’s our space and here are our shelves which are all full of things’ and we

wanted people to know that we are here now and open three days a week for them to come and give things and for people to come and get things. Hopefully, as this relationship evolves and as people become aware of this, we can begin to operate out of other locations in Chicago and work with other kinds of partners but for now, this is a nice big space to start with,” said Koenen.

During the recent event, teachers and nonprofit workers were able to receive full classroom sets of new Scholastic books, office supplies, school supplies for students, and more high-cost items like microscopes, calculators and cameras.

Aside from being a place for people to come and receive supplies and equipment, CCRx is always looking for volunteers to help sort through donations and for individuals and businesses to donate their surplus items rather than disposing of them.

Well Living Lab study shows cognitive performance of office workers improves when windows provide access to daylight, view New research from the Well Living Lab, a Delos™ and Mayo Clinic collaboration, shows that office areas with windows, which provide people with natural light and views of the outdoors, improve workers’ cognitive performance and satisfaction with their office environment. Modern shading and glass tinting techniques can mitigate eyestrain, reducing discomfort from daylight glare.

These findings are published in the November volume of Building and Environment. The study was conducted by researchers from the fields of environmental, health and behavioral science.

As part of the study, participants moved into in a simulated office setting matching their regular office cubicles. There, they went about their normal work activities for 14 weeks while environment and behavior were monitored.

They brought their personal artifacts and work tools with them.

The simulated office space had eastand north-facing windows, and all participants sat an equal distance from the windows. Every two weeks, participants were exposed to a different window condition: mesh shades, dynamically tinted windows or blackout shades to remove daylight and view.

“OTHER STUDIES HAVE SHOWN ACCESS TO DAYLIGHT AND VIEWS REDUCES STRESS, IMPROVES MOOD AND LOWERS ABSENTEEISM FROM WORK — AND EVEN THAT EMPLOYEES MAKE FEWER MISTAKES. ADDITIONAL STUDIES CAN BUILD UPON THESE FINDINGS TO HELP COMPLETE THE PICTURE THAT IS EMERGING: THAT WINDOWS ARE GOOD FOR US.”

New research from the Well Living Lab, a Delos™ and Mayo Clinic collaboration, shows that office areas with windows, which provide people with natural light and views of the outdoors, improve workers’ cognitive performance and satisfaction with their office environment.

The dynamic tinting windows used an algorithm to automatically adjust to darker tints in the mornings to prevent daylight glare and returned to a state that was not tinted by midday. Participants could adjust the mesh shade height and window tinting amounts to their preference.

All other conditions, such as electric lighting, temperature, humidity and ventilation, were consistently maintained.

Three aspects of cognitive function were measured daily: working mem-

ory, inhibition and task switching.

Eye health, including eyestrain, fatigue, irritability, focus and blurred vision, were evaluated by a questionnaire. The employees also reported their satisfaction with their office environment, such as their reactions to the workspace overall, and lighting for computer- and paper-based work.

Cognitive function improved when participants had access to daylight and view in their office area.

their ability to inhibit responses increased. Task switching was not affected by the various study conditions. Both the mesh shading and dynamic tinting resulted in the same degree of improved cognitive performance, compared to blackout conditions. Eyestrain also lessened when employees had access to daylight and view from the windows, with no difference between the two types of shading. Environmental satisfaction also improved with window access.

When the workspace had the windows blacked out, the No. 1 change that employees wanted was window access. When they experienced mesh shades and dynamic tinting, their top desired improvement varied from noise to temperature to privacy.

“We’ve added to the growing evidence that the ability to see the outdoors has a positive impact,” says Brent Bauer, M.D., medical director of the Well Living Lab and principal investigator on the study for Mayo Clinic.

“Other studies have shown access to daylight and views reduces stress, improves mood and lowers absenteeism from work — and even that employees make fewer mistakes. Additional studies can build upon these findings to help complete the picture that is emerging: that windows are good for us.”

The Well Living Lab recognizes that not everyone with an office job can have access to daylight and views, and offers these tips: l Bring nature inside, such as plants or a water feature. Decorate with nature scenes, such as photos and paintings, screen savers and cutouts from magazines. l Use natural elements in the design of the workspace, including wood and stone. l Listen to nature recordings on your headset or stream videos showing woods, lakes, flowers or other elements of nature that you find enjoyable. l Use breaks to walk outside.

Fight to Fame Brings on Roy Jones Jr. as an Ambassador

Fight to Fame, an entertainment platform with the aim to create new movie stars from the fighting industry recently announced that Roy Jones Jr. has joined fellow world class fighters Chris Van Heerden, Rigan Machado, and Prince Badi Ajamu as one of Fight to Fame’s ambassadors. The ambassadors are expected to guide the new blockchain technology company in the right direction while drumming up support from upcoming fighters.

Fight to Fame’s global boxing ambassador, Roy Jones Jr., is one of the success stories in the boxing space. Jones is a former professional boxer who has also worked as an actor, boxing trainer, boxing commentator, and rapper.

Roy Jones Jr. was born in the United States in 1969 and comes from a family of boxers. His father, Roy Jones Sr., was a middleweight boxer who received a Bronze Star for valor for rescuing a fellow soldier in the Vietnam War. As an amateur boxer, Roy Jones Jr. won a number of accolades including the 1984 United States National Junior Olympics, the US 1986 National Golden Gloves, and the US National Golden Gloves in 1987. He completed his amateur career with an impressive 121-13 record, comparable to other boxing greats such as Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Oscar de la Hoya, and Pernell Whitaker.

He enjoys being the only boxing champion to have held seven golden belts including the IBA, IBF, IBO, NBA, WBA, WBC, and WBF titles.

Roy Jones Jr. was named Fighter of the Decade for the 1990s by the Boxing Writers Association of America while

the Ring Magazine named him the Fighter of the Year in 1994. He won the Best Boxer ESPY Award on three occasions (1996, 2000, and 2003).

At his best, Jones Jr. was known for his great hand speed, movement, athleticism, and reflexes. He won 12 unified light heavyweight title bouts, which by 2018, stood as a record for the most wins in the fighting industry.

Jobs Report: Employment Growth Stronger Than Expected The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 128,000 in October. According to a press release from The Conference Board, this is a stronger than expected gain given the negative impact from the GM strike, which probably lowered overall employment by more than 50,000. The numbers for August and September were significantly revised up.

The Board added that the main message from the recent report is that the current trend in employment growth is higher than expected and is probably in the 150,000-200,000 range, also stating that with such solid employment growth, consumer spending is likely to remain strong into the holiday season and keep the US economy growing despite cautious spending by businesses.
