CHICAGO – Lyman A. Budlong and John Palmer Elementary Schools recently earned awards from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation (Healthier Generation) for outstanding efforts in the prioritization of student, staff, and family health in 2023. Across the nation, 781 schools received such recognition, while Budlong and Palmer were among only 14 to receive distinction for outstanding performance in all nine student health topic areas: social-emotional health, staff well-being, staff and community engagement, nutrition and food access, local school wellness policy, physical education and activity, health education, promoting tobacco-free schools, and supporting school health services.

Budlong Elementary School places an emphasis on social-emotional learning (SEL) to promote strong relationships and developmental growth among students. Palmer Elementary has long-standing partnerships with several organizations to help promote wellness among their school community. One such partnership is Pilot Light, a local nonprofit organization that collaborates with teachers to promote food education and foster informed food choices. Teachers at Palmer also regularly participate in “walking classrooms,” which allow students to stay active during the school day, supporting both physical and social-emotional wellness. The school’s focus on health and wellness is not limited to its students, Palmer also emphasizes staff support through wellness programs such as yoga classes, health-centered development programming, and more.

Staff from Budlong Elementary and Palmer Elementary traveled to Washington, D.C. earlier in October for the America’s Healthiest Schools Leaders Summit to represent the school and the District in receiving this honor and to collaborate with other staff and administrators to share best practices for prioritizing whole health needs for school communities.

CASTEN, FRANKEL INTRODUCE BILL TO PROTECT K-12 STUDENTS FROM SEXUAL HARASSMENT AND ASSAULT Recently, U.S. Representative Sean Casten (IL-06) and Democratic Women’s Caucus Chair Lois Frankel (FL-22) introduced the Stop Sexual Harassment in K-12 Act to combat sexual harassment, assault, and sex-based discrimination occurring in K-12 schools by creating clear standards and related funding streams for schools to uphold their students’ Title IX rights.

There is a gap in resources to address sexual abuse, violence, and discrimination facing K-12 students. One in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually abused before they turn 18 years old. A 2019 study found that 10% of K-12 students will be subjected to sexual abuse or misconduct by school employees, and that students who are low-income, female, and in high school are most likely to be the target of sexual misconduct by school employees.

Students who experience sex-based harassment are also less likely to report what has happened to them. More than 85% of American K-12 schools reported zero allegations of sexual harassment, which is in stark contrast to the rates reported in victimization surveys.

“At least one in four female and one in six male students face sexual abuse, but right now, our schools don’t have the resources and guidance under Title IX to protect students from sexual harassment, assault, and other forms of discrimination that interfere with equal access to education,” said Rep. Casten. “The Stop Sexual Harassment in K-12 Act will provide schools with clear standards and resources necessary to keep our students safe. It’s more important than ever that we equip our schools to meet the needs of all students and protect them from sexual harassment and abuse.”

“School should be a safe place for students to learn and grow, free from the fear of sexual assault or harassment,” said Rep. Frankel. “This bill will protect our children by ensuring students are aware of their rights and have access to the tools they need to pursue their education free from sexual misconduct in the classroom.”

With unwavering confidence, we affirm that this legislation will serve as a crucial safeguard, upholding the effectiveness and appropriateness of K-12 schools’ responses to combat sexual harassment.”

Specifically, the Stop Sexual Harassment in K-12 Act: Clearly defines the role and responsibilities of a Title IX coordinator in a K-12 school; Sets guidelines on how many full-time educators serving as Title IX coordinators a school district needs, given the size of their student body; Prevents people with conflicts of interest (e.g.: the principal) from serving as Title IX coordinators; Encourages confidential reporting of sexual assault and sex-based discrimination, so students are not deterred from seeking help; Provides training to students and teachers about what to do if they see or experience Title IX violations; Creates a national climate survey so we can get better data about where and how often harassment and assault are occurring; Provides funding to schools to help them implement these provisions This bill has been cosponsored by Representatives Stephen Lynch, Eleanor Holmes Norton, Delia Ramirez, and Dina Titus.

Your phone pings. It looks like a text message from your bank, and it’s urgent.

It says you need to send money to your account using a wire transfer or digital payment like Zelle® to reverse a fraudulent transaction. Or, it tells you there’s suspicious activity on your account, and you need to call a certain number right away to address it.

If the message is from your bank, it must be legitimate, right?

Impersonating a financial institution, a government agency or a utility company is a common scam tactic to get access to your accounts or personal information. Even the most cautious consumers can fall victim, as scammers become increasingly sophisticated in their efforts to commit digital fraud.

Knowing about scammers’ tricks can help you stay one step ahead of them. Here are some common schemes you might see.

Spoofing

Scammers can “spoof” phone numbers. Your caller ID can say the call or text is from your bank even though it’s not. The scammer will eventually ask for personal or financial information, or ask you to send money.

Phishing

“Phishing” is when you get an email that looks reputable but asks you to call a fraudulent number, respond to the email or go to a website and enter personal information. You may be asked to look at an attachment, which then gives bad actors access to your computer if you open it.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) or “deep fakes”

Smart technology allows scammers to duplicate familiar voices and trick consumers out of money and personal information. Scammers gain the trust of victims by pretending to be a close family member or friend in need.

Check fraud

Scammers can steal written checks from unattended mailboxes, or if you deposit them but don’t dispose of them properly. They’ll use chemicals to erase and rewrite the checks to themselves, sell your personal info or use it to create counterfeit checks.

“Malvertising”

Scammers place fake phone numbers in search engines and online ads under the names of legitimate companies like banks or airlines. People call those numbers and are tricked into sharing account or other personal information.

How to stay safe

Be proactive and avoid becoming a victim by following these tips.

• Delete, block and ignore calls or messages from sources you don’t recognize.

• Protect your personal account information, ATM pins, passwords and one-time passcodes. If someone contacts you and asks for this information, especially if it’s someone claiming to be from your bank, do not share it with them.

• Banks or government agencies will never ask for personal information when they contact you.

Government agencies also will not contact you via phone; you’ll likely receive a notice by mail. Refuse to give your personal information if someone contacts you by email, text or phone.

• Don’t let anyone pressure or threaten you into giving them personal information or money. Hang up or don’t respond.

• If anyone says you must act right now, stop and ask yourself, “Is this how a legitimate company would act?” If something seems “off,” it probably is.

• Remember that financial institutions will never ask you to send money to yourself or anyone else.

• Don’t send money to someone you don’t know or for reasons you are not clear: you may not get it back.

• Even if your caller ID says a call or text is from your bank, it could be a scam. When in doubt hang up or stop texting, and call your bank directly (use the number on the back of your debit card).

• Don’t click on links or attachments in an email or text if you’re not sure who it’s from, and be on the lookout for messages that ask for immediate action from you.

• Instead of entering a company name in your internet browser’s search bar, type the full URL in the address bar (for example, www.chase.com) so you’ll go directly to your bank’s secure, verified website.

• To avoid check fraud, consider sending money electronically or using your card.

• If you’re writing a check, use a permanent pen so the information is hard to erase. Fill out the payee and dollar amount space completely or draw a line to the end of the space. Sign checks the same way every time and mail checks from inside the post office.

If you become a victim of online fraud, don’t be embarrassed, and report it to your bank. Also, tell family and friends about your experience so they too can be on high alert.

Scammers may try hard, but consumers who are alert and informed can stop them in their tracks.

CITY OF CHICAGO PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES FOR RESIDENTS TO SUPPORT NEW ARRIVALS AND UNHOUSED CHICAGOANS AHEAD OF THE WINTER SEASON CHICAGO — With winter approaching, there is a need to provide individuals, families, children and infants with winter coats, shoes, and warm clothing along with other essential items. Since August 31, 2022, the City of Chicago has welcomed more than 19,000 asylum-seekers. According to a 2023 study by the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, over 68,000 Chicagoans are currently experiencing homelessness.

We are at an increasingly critical point in this humanitarian endeavor. To protect new arrivals and unhoused Chicagoans from falling temperatures, the City is collaborating with external partners to provide blankets, coats, and other items.

For residents and organizations interested in making a direct impact, the City is working with a number of organizations and mutual aid groups to assist new arrivals.

One Warm Coat is a national nonprofit organization that provides free coats to children and adults in need while promoting volunteerism and environmental sustainability. Chicago residents can find a place to donate coats near them by searching by zip code or can register to hold a coat drive here. In addition, One Warm Coat is coordinating donations of new outerwear for migrant families in Chicago through its Zero Waste Initiative. One Warm Coat is also accepting monetary donations (minimum of $5,000) to purchase new coats at wholesale prices.

Spotlighting Our Hero Mr. Dad’s Father’s Club What began as Joseph Williams reading to his daughter’s class at her school, became a movement to get fathers involved in their children’s lives.

Williams started Mr. Dad’s Father’s Club in 2017. It was an outlet for him. He began helping out at the school doing lunchroom duty and hallway monitoring. He built a respect level with the children at the school. He wanted to tap into his children’s lives through volunteering.

“That’s why I always tell people, my kids saved my life. And, that’s why it’s so important for this work to happen because other fathers, they love their babies and they want to be in their kids lives, they just don’t know how sometimes,” Williams said.

Every week, Williams would read books to his daughter’s class.

When fathers started to come to the school to pick up their children, they wanted to get involved with reading books to the students. Before he knew it, there were 150 fathers reading books to students and assisting with events at the school.

Williams wanted to turn that momentum into something and decided to start Mr. Dad’s Father’s Club as a nonprofit. He became more intentional with reading books that were focused on social emotional learning. He wanted to boost the confidence in the students he was reading to.

At the school, the faculty and staff saw a change in the students’ behavior. Williams started to bring in men from different backgrounds, doctors, lawyers and judges and have them read to the students. One of Mr. Dad’s Father’s Club frequent guest readers is Circuit Court of Cook County Judge David L. Kelly. Williams’ hope is that having students see men from different backgrounds will inspire the children to pursue those careers. Police officers have also come into read to the students, which Williams was hoping is a way to build relationships between the students and the police.

With Mr. Dad’s Father’s Club, the literacy component is for the students grades pre-k to third grade. From fourth to twelfth grade, students receive mentoring. The mentoring ranges from one-on-one mentoring to group support. He also has speakers come in to speak to the students on topics from bullying to entrepreneurship. His goal was to open up the students’ minds to receive knowledge that can help them as they grow up. Three years ago, a fatherhood component was created.

That group meets once a week, they talk about life, child support, custody, how to be in their children’s lives and they receive mentorship.

Every week, Williams would read books to his daughter’s class. When fathers started to come to the school to pick up their children, they wanted to get involved with reading books to the students. Before he knew it, there were 150 fathers reading books to students and assisting with events at the school.

“The main thing I love doing with them is sending them out on trips. We’ll send the fathers with their kids skating, to the White Sox game, to the WNBA games, just sending them around so they can have those experiences,” Williams said.

Mr. Dad’s Father’s Club also send fathers to museums and the zoos with their children. Williams said that a lot of times, the fathers think they need money to spend time with their children. But, there are opportunities for them to spend time with their children with little to no cost to them. Williams also makes sure the fathers know about different resources that are available.

All of it feels good for Williams to do. Mr. Dad’s Father’s Club is currently in 11 schools. He wants to expand the program to all the schools on the South side first, then going to the West side. He also wants to be able to pay the fathers who volunteer to read to the students in the schools.

When Mr. Dad’s Father’s Club first started, Williams had to recruit fathers at the different schools. Principals have been reaching out to him and asking him to bring the program to their school. And, they also have the fathers who want to volunteer. The students also love Mr. Dad, the mascot of Mr. Dad’s Father’s Club that goes into the school.

Williams said doing this work is serious to him. Growing up, he wanted the guidance of a man. He decided he was going to be the kind of father that was in his children’s lives and in the lives of other children. He went through a lot to get the organization off the ground and he is glad that it is growing and thriving.

“I ain’t perfect, but I work my hardest to do the best I can do for my community and for these babies and to walk a straight line,” he said.

Mr. Dad’s Father’s Club participates in about 10 events throughout the year. Williams wants people to have experiences that might not have otherwise. He has hosted pumpkin patches and outdoor camping. He also wants to have space that can be activated for events.

RED SUMMER 1919 Composer J. Kimo Williams Releases His Magnum Opus: Red Summer 1919 SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va., PRNewswire -- First World War Black veterans returned home from fighting in France, hoping to be recognized as equal citizens in this country.

Despite their sacrifices and service, they faced continued oppression and harsh treatment under Jim Crow laws. The 1919 riots, also known as The Red Summer, marked a turning point as Black citizens supported by these returning veterans fought against their mistreatment for the first time.

In the late 1990s, J. Kimo Williams was commissioned

by The National Opera Orchestra (InterSound Records) to arrange Mozart Arias for their instrumental orchestra release.

It was quite the challenge in that the lyrics associated with opera are so important that sometimes the essence of the music that supports the story can be overlooked.

In 2023, Williams decided to bring visibility to Black WWI Veterans and wanted to tell their story in this format. This Progressive-Rock Jazz-Fusion project, titled ‘Red Summer 1919: An Instrumental Opera,’ is his musical approach to imagining the historical events Kimo Williams/PRNewsFoto leading up to the riots. Williams composed new music and used themes from previous works to set each scene. Relaying the visual narrative to the instrumentalists, Vinnie Colaiuta (Jeff Beck, Herbie Handcock, Sting), Michael Brecker, and Mike Stern, they used their imagination to create a musical representation of each scene through their improvisation or (in the case of Vinnie) shape the scene through rhythm.

Becomes First Black Woman to Lead Regional Surgical Society

HOPEWELL, N.J., PRNewswire -- Dr. Africa Wallace, director of Thoracic Surgery at Capital Health, was recently named the president of the Eastern Cardiothoracic Surgical Society (ECTSS). Dr. Wallace is the first black female president for ECTSS and the first of any cardiothoracic surgery society.

Now – more than ever – this is especially true as it relates to their optimism about running their businesses, according to PNC’s latest Economic Outlook Survey.

Survey results show that 69% of women and 73% of men are highly optimistic about their business prospects. But women appear to have the edge when it comes to confidence – 69% say they are confident about running their businesses compared to 57% of men. This trend is consistent with last year’s survey responses. In 2022, 8 in 10 women business owners reported feeling very confident in their business success and nearly half credited their confidence to their own hard work and drive.

“It stands to reason that those sentiments, together with a few key resources – professional networks, improved access to credit and the agility to navigate the economic landscape – all contribute to a level of confidence that is driving continued optimism this year,” says Beth Marcello, director of PNC Women’s Business Development.

Engaging in Networks According to the survey, women-owned businesses are more likely to be engaged with the Small Business Administration, chambers of commerce and other professional groups. In fact, 83% of women business owners participate in business development organizations compared to 64% of men.

“Women often credit the benefits of a strong network to winning new business and finding new and better ways of doing business, and we’re supporting that network-building through our relationships with organizations such as global nonprofit Coralus and the Women Presidents Organization,” says Marcello.

Decisions for the Economic Landscape The optimism of women business owners comes through in the survey in specific areas of their enterprises, as 64% expect to see an increase in demand, 65% anticipate an increase in sales, and 56% predict an increase in profits in the next six months. While 57% also have plans to moderately increase prices.

“These are just a few indicators of how women are thinking as they make business decisions heading into 2024,” Marcello says. “While some of their

optimism may be tested by continued high inflation and a potential recession, there is strong evidence that they are prepared.”

Seeking Credit When PNC began surveying women business owners in 2014, men were more likely to seek credit in the near term. The 2022 survey showed for the first time, women overtaking men when considering a new loan or line of credit to support business growth. This trend continued in 2023, with 26% of women saying they are likely to seek a near-term business loan or line of credit compared to 23% of men.

“While this data could simply reflect changes in the way women are conducting business, it’s evidence that fewer women are intimidated by the traditional process of gaining access to credit for their businesses,” Marcello says. “This is really encouraging.”

Dedicated efforts to make more resources available to women entrepreneurs are paying off, says Marcello. At PNC, for example, women can lean on the expertise of 5,000 PNC-Certified Women’s Business Advocates who have a passion for working with women financial decision makers.
