NEWS briefly SOUTHEAST CALUMET HEIGHTS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION TO HOST GLAM AND DAPPER DAY Southeast Calumet Heights Homeowners Association will host “Glam and Dapper Day,” an on-site vaccination event from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2, at Compassion Baptist Church, located at 2650 E. 95th St. The event is free and open to the public. It will include a mobile vaccine unit, barbers will provide haircuts, nail technicians will provide manicures, makeup artists will give makeovers, and there will be a game truck. Those who get vaccinated will receive a free t-shirt.

ARTS + PUBLIC LIFE CELEBRATES GRAND OPENING OF L1 RETAIL STORE Arts + Public Life (APL), an initiative of UChicago Arts at the University of Chicago, is inviting the community to celebrate its 10 year anniversary with the grand opening of L1, a newly renovated retail store housing three South Side Black-owned businesses inside of Chicago’s first historic “L” station built in 1892. The ‘Back On The Block’ free open house event will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9, along the 300 East Block of Garfield Blvd.

The L1 retail space is an extension of the L1 creative business accelerator (CBA) fellowship program launched in August 2020 by Arts + Public Life in partnership with The Silver Room Foundation’s urban planning and social impact arm, Proximity. The L1 program provides both a 20-month fellowship and 700 square feet of subsidised shared brick and mortar retail space for the inaugural cohort of three South Side entrepreneurs dedicated to scaling their creative businesses over the next two years– Peter Gaona of ReformedSchool, Tiffany Joi of Hemp Heals Body Shop, and Andrea Polk of Solo Noir and Zen Soul Apothecary.

“In addition to receiving business training and mentorship, the opening of the L1 retail store rounds out the offerings of the Creative Business Accelerator fellowship as a new platform for our fellows to offer their products to the public. The opening of the L1 coincides with the commemoration of Arts + Public Life’s 10 year anniversary which will allow the public to learn more about our history, current projects, and future plans,” said APL Director Adrienne Brown.

Residents Want To See Progress On Roseland/West Pullman redevelopment Continued from page 1

The Far South Community Development Corporation has a vision of what the far south side of the city of Chicago could look like. There are proposals Far South CDC is looking for the city of Chicago to assist with. Both the 9th Ward Alderman Anthony Beale and the 34th Ward Alderman Carrie Austin are championing these proposals.

Abraham Lacy is the president of the Far South Community Development Corporation, which covers the Roseland and the West Pullman, as well as parts of the South Suburbs.

The proposals include 50 acres of a vacant industrial site, located at 119th and Morgan.

The development corporation has been trying to get the city to acquire the site. Several developers have wanted to build industrial distribution facilities at the site.

There has not been any movement from the City or the Department of Planning and Development on the industrial development of the vacant site. The Far South CDC also attempted to go through the Cook County Land Bank but were told to go through the City.

“If that ever came to play, it would bring anywhere from 150 to 200 jobs at that location. It would be an anchor to what’s already been developed, which is right across the street from the new fire station that was opened back in March,” Lacy said.

There also has been a series of housing developments the Far South CDC has been trying to promote, with a focus on single

family homes. That is ideal for what Lacy describes as a bedrock community, that had historically African American homeownership. The community has seen homeownership numbers decline either because the homes need to be upgraded or new homes are needed due to growing family dynamics.

The Red Line extension is coming through the Roseland and West Pullman area. In West Pullman, at the station located at 115th and Michigan, there is a proposal to develop housing and retail adjacent to the station.

Education is another part of the redevelopment of the community. The closing of schools was destabilizing to the community. There has not been a new school built in the Roseland or West Pullman community in years.

“In other parts of the city, they build it, and they hope people will come to it. In many cases they do. In our neighborhood if they get a slight decline in students because of other disinvestment that has been taking place, they shut the school down,” Lacy said. “Now you’ve got to bus all these kids to different locations, and they have to cross neighborhoods, and it’s proven to be dangerous and really unnerving for families.”

Lacy does have hope. Market studies have shown there is room for expansion of housing, which is the route the Far South CDC is going in. Also, there is hope in utilizing the community’s industrial core and taking advantage of the proposed transit line of the Red Line extension.

The New Tax Increments Financing Districts, as well as expanding existing TIF Districts, have resulted in most of West

Pullman being under a TIF. The money and resources are available to be leveraged.

“There’s a lot there that can be done. It’s just that I’m not sure if there is a disconnect with City Hall downtown and the West Pullman neighborhood,” Lacy said. “We’re not quite clear on the City Hall’s plan for West Pullman. We’re not sure why if the South and West sides are a priority, as asserted by City Hall, there’s not a clear plan in place or a clear roadmap of what West Pullman can be.”

The Ninth Ward Alderman Anthony Beale’s vision for redevelopment is very broad. The next part of redevelopment of the area is the medical district and Roseland Hospital. The Medical District runs from 110th Place and Michigan and would be extended to 115th and Michigan.

“If we’re able to, expand the Medical District, expand the hospital, which we know now from COVID, we have a health desert in our community,” Beale said.

Beale is also trying to get a grocery store on 115th and Michigan. The idea is to work on the Medical District on 111th and the grocery store on 115th, then work inward to the rest of the community. The community is trying to get the city on board with its vision for the community.

“We just really need the City to put the resources behind it, like they’re doing every place else, they need to put the same resources out here,” Beale said. “If we get the attention and the resources. We already have the vision and the plan. I’m going to continue to push forward and I’m confident we’ll get it at the end of the day.”

Shore Community Services Receives $125,000 Grant From The Coleman Foundation Shore Community Services, a non-profit based in Skokie, IL offering programs and services to children and adults with intellectual and other developmental disabilities, is the recipient of a $125,000 grant from The Coleman Foundation to support the New Life in Motion Choice Program.

The redesigning and rebuilding of the community day program, which is housed in the Lois Lloyd Center on the first floor of Shore’s main building, is crucial and necessary as brought upon by the Covid-19 shelter-in-place mandates in 2020. The Shore community quickly realized that individuals served were severely limited, and in some cases, experienced regression in development from the tight restrictions brought on by the Covid-19 restrictions.

Programming that is a crucial lifeline for clients became un-

“Quarantine affected the mental and developmental well-being of our clients, and independent skills were restricted,” says India Ehioba, CEO. “Video programming and Zoom meetings didn’t work for our clients. Our residents couldn’t go into public communities like they were accustomed to. People with developmental disabilities need stimulation to progress. So, we took that time to evaluate the programming to fit circumstances such as those brought upon us by the pandemic to continue building development for our clients, regardless of restrictions.”

The main structural component of the New Life in Motion Program will be themed rooms designed on the interests of clients such as Literature, Art/ Music, Cooking, Computer/

Internet, Science/Horticulture and Cultural/Current Events.

Clients can choose schedules that will change 4-5 times per day, every day. Expected program outcomes are that 80% of enrolled clients will improve their expressive language skills; 88% will participate in at least 10 center-based enrichment activities monthly and 85% will improve their appropriate community behavior skills.

“The program is designed to offer our clients opportunities and choices to develop the ability for them to make informed choices for new experiences,” says Ms. Ehioba. “The objective is to expand experiential learning by providing community integration opportunities with individual and group activities, in both community and facility-based settings. To maintain and improve activities of daily

living and social skills.”

Funds from The Coleman Foundation grant will mainly go toward: 1) replacing doors with window doors to let in light, openness and safety 2) adapting rooms to add windows 3) direct care staffing support for hiring and training staff 4) IT services and software development for individual client schedules.

“We are optimistic and envision our future offerings to be more person-centered,” says Ms. Ehioba. We’re all excited about having our individuals served, be the key focus in implementing programs schedules that reflect their desired activities. This transition will be a dramatic but necessary change to give our clients a fulfilling day that increases their independence and improves their quality of live, which has been our mission for 70 years.”

Illinois Medical District Urges Sickle Cell Awareness PRNewswire -- The Illinois Medical District (IMD) and American Red Cross of Illinois are partnering to draw attention to sickle cell disease and its treatment. During National Sickle Cell Awareness Month, the organizations are calling on Chicagoans—especially minority communities affected by sickle cell disease—to donate blood to treat conditions such as sickle cell anemia and reduce disparities in health care for minorities.

Sickle cell anemia is one form of an inherited blood disease.

The sickle cell trait causes red blood cells to turn from a soft, round shape to a firm, sickle form. The abnormally shaped cells can block blood flow to bones, muscles and organs, causing episodes of extreme pain. In some cases, such a sickle cell crisis can be life-threatening.

Every ethnic and racial group includes people living with the sickle cell trait, but incidence is highest in the Black community. Chicago’s Near West Side, where IMD is located, draws from African, Asian, Latin American and Mediterranean communities with the genetic sickle cell trait. Infants get sickle cell tests at birth, but minority communities often have limited continuous access to quality maternity care and adult diagnostics.

“Sickle cell disease is an invisible and enduring health disparity in the U.S.,” said Kate Schellinger, IMD interim executive director. “The Illinois Medical District is fortunate to include not only prominent research and treatment centers for sickle cell disease, but also an American Red Cross blood donation center. People who donate blood can alleviate the suffering of sickle cell patients and contribute to their longterm health.”

Blood transfusions are important in the care that UI Health, Rush and other medical centers give sickle cell patients. Individuals with sickle cell disease can require thousands of blood transfusions throughout their lifetime to treat complications of the disease. Frequent transfusions make finding compatible blood products more challenging because patients develop an immune response to transfused blood.

In these cases, minority donors are life savers. Their blood can contain distinct blood protein structures or antigens that are the most compatible for patients with sickle cell disease.

Blood banks may lack diverse blood supplies. The IMD and Red Cross encourage healthy community members of all minority groups to donate blood.

The need for blood is not limited to patients with sickle cell disease. Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion, including women with childbirth complications, people fighting cancer and trauma patients in emergency rooms.

How to Help the IMD-Red Cross Blood Drive Shortages during the pandemic make blood donation more critical right now. A diverse supply of blood is vital to treat conditions from cancer to complications from childbirth, surgeries, and trauma. “As COVID-19 cases increase, blood donations assure that hospitals and patients have continued access to vital blood products,” Schellinger said.

Hospitals most often fall short of type O blood in emergencies. Fifty-one percent of Black individuals are type O. For this reason, Black donors play a critical role in meeting the constant need for blood.

“As an organization dedicated to alleviating suffering, the Red Cross is committed to the health and well-being of all communities,” Roldán said. “Maintaining a diverse blood supply is critical to improving health outcomes for all patients.”

To help adults and youth who have suffered job losses during the pandemic, Senate Majority Leader Kimberly A. Lightford (D-Maywood) recently announced $20 million will go toward workforce recovery efforts through the American Rescue Plan Act Job Training and Economic Development Program.

“As the result of an unprecedented global pandemic, investments in workforce training have never been more important for our communities, our people and our economy,” Lightford said. “I’m proud to join Gov. Pritzker in announcing the next steps to guide our continued economic recovery with investments that will put more people back to work. I look forward to heading up the work of the commission so that we can close the equity gap that has for too long shut residents out and bring more Illinoisans into not just jobs, but permanent career paths.”

The federal government created the American Rescue Plan to change the course of the pandemic and deliver immediate relief to American workers. In Illinois alone, over 400,000 Illinois residents were laid off because of the pandemic. In order to ensure these workers are able to regain employment, Gov. Pritzker and the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity released $20 million for workforce recovery and $4.4 million for the Youth Career Pathways Program.

Lightford also recently championed the Education and Workforce Equity Act, part of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus’s four-pillar agenda to eliminate systemic racism in the state. The act requires the Illinois Workforce Innovation Board to create a study to determine the feasibility of consolidating all workforce development programs under a single agency.

The Workforce Equity and Access Commission will conduct the study to explore the potential benefits of consolidating workforce programs created under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act into a single state agency. The commission will also examine whether consolidation could increase access to job training for underserved populations.

“The commission was created to help level the playing field in our workforce development system and ensure everyone has equal access to quality career opportunities,” Lightford said.

“Most importantly, it was created to evaluate the impact of systemic racism on the experience of participants in the workforce system—understanding the problem is the first step toward solving it.”

VIOLIFE® Plant Grants Awards $100K to Five Black-Owned Restaurants New program aims to make plant-based eating more accessible with support from legendary hip-hop artist RZA and vegan chef pioneers Lemel Durrah and Laricia Chandler Baker HACKENSACK, N.J. RZA, the legendary hip-hop artist and outspoken vegan advocate, is sharing his personal story of going plant-based, as well as what motivated him to become involved with Plant Grants. “I’m excited to work with the Plant Grants restaurants because they are on

Stepping up when it matters most Last year, we committed $1.25 billion over five years to build on our long-standing work in support of driving racial equality and economic opportunity. To date, we’ve directly funded or invested nearly $400 million of this commitment, in addition to other ways we continue to make an impact in our communities.

Our actions include: •

$36 million to 21 Minority Deposit Institutions (MDIs) and Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) banks that support minority-owned businesses. This is in addition to our approximately $100 million in deposits to MDIs and our existing $1.8 billion CDFI portfolio.

$300 million to 100 equity funds to provide capital to diverse entrepreneurs and small business owners

•

$10 million grant to fund the Center for Black Entrepreneurship (CBE), in partnership with Spelman and Morehouse colleges

•

$25 million to 21 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-serving institutions (HSIs) and community colleges in support of job skilling and placement

•

Establishing new partnerships and coalitions focused on building skills and creating job opportunities for people of color

$60 million to increase access to capital and career opportunities for Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) affordable housing developers

33 million+ masks, more than 272,000 bottles of hand sanitizer and 8 million gloves to communities in need
