WTTW TO PRODUCE LOCAL CONTENT AND EVENTS FOR ‘MUHAMMAD ALI’ WTTW and its sister classical music radio station WFMT will produce and present special local content in connection with the upcoming fourpart documentary series from Ken Burns, MUHAMMAD ALI, at 7 p.m. beginning on Sunday, Sept. 19 on all WTTW platforms. Parts two, three, and four of the series will air on successive nights at 8:00 pm.

MUHAMMAD ALI was directed by Ken Burns and written and co-directed by Sarah Burns and David McMahon. The film follows the life of one of the most consequential men of the 20th century, a threetime heavyweight boxing champion who captivated billions of fans with his combination of speed, agility, power in the ring, his charm, wit and outspokenness outside of it.

At the height of his fame, Ali challenged Americans’ racial prejudices, religious biases, and notions about what roles celebrities and athletes play in our society, and inspired people all over the world with his message of pride and self-affirmation.

Ali was a Chicago South Side resident from roughly the mid-1960s through the late 1970s, a defining period in his life. Having converted to Islam in 1964, he claimed conscientious objector status in refusing to serve in Vietnam. Ali was immediately stripped of his title, banned from boxing, and convicted of draft evasion, a felony for which he could have served five years in prison. While his case was on appeal, Ali made the city of Chicago his home, and became more involved with the Nation of Islam and the civil rights movement, married, started a family, and eventually staged a comeback.

WTTW will explore these watershed moments in Ali’s life with a companion website, wttw.com/ali.

WFMT will publish an interview on Tuesday, Sept. 21, with Jahlil Beats, composer of the score for MUHAMMAD ALI, on wfmt.com. WFMT will also air a November 1975 Studs Terkel interview with Ali from the Studs Terkel Radio Archive.

Stacy Jackson, executive director of Chicago Lights, has been with the organization for 25 years. She has served as Associate Executive Director and Director of the Tutoring and Summer Day programs. She has seen some of the most vulnerable communities in Chicago affected by the housing crisis, Polar Vortex and COVID-19.

Jackson recalls when she went to Chicago Lights to interview for her first position with the organization. She was sitting in the lobby and while she waited, the wealthiest person she ever encountered and someone experiencing homelessness passed her. She saw people from different races and backgrounds. She knew she wanted to be part of an organization that is more of a community that unites and care for others.

Chicago Light was founded in 1964.

Its first tutoring program was facilitated by members of Fourth Presbyterian Church. Those members wanted to help students in nearby Cabrini Green Homes with their homework. From that meeting of a small group of adults and children, it grew to four nights a week, serving more than 400 students and more than 400 adults. Listening to what participants wanted, more programs were added, leading the organization to expand.

“Our whole goal is to build brighter futures for Chicago’s youth and adults. We do that by partnering with

our participants through mentoring, arts education, urban farming, social services and career development,” Jackson said.

One of Jackson’s best memories during her time at Chicago Lights is when a tutor pair who worked together for a while, the student reported that he received a B on his math test. Jackson could see the trajectory of his life changed because he was aware of what he was capable of.

Chicago Lights provides clothing, food, referrals and case management to people experiencing homelessness, as well as helping people who have stable but low incomes get housing.

Youth career development has been one of Jackson’s favorite projects. It helps young people get a taste of what it is like to work, with a goal of staying in school, graduating from high school, going to college, if that is their path. The ultimate goal of the program is to have the youth to land in their career of choice, something they were born to do. That way, they can thrive in their life, enjoy themselves and be able to pay their bills.

As a woman of color in the non-profit industry, Jackson believes her role is to help people from various backgrounds understand one another and be curious about one another and realize they need each other. While her counterparts at other places have experienced microaggressions and tokenism, Jackson has been given a lot of grace in her workplace.

The same issues Jackson encoun-

tered 25 years ago in the non-profit industry are still there. People are still hungry, people still need housing and young people still need help with their education. She has seen some changes.

“In terms of the industry, I’ve seen a change in what we would call charity to really being a social impact sector, with the knowledge that what is going on in non-profit, there are business principles, we are working hard, there is expertise. So, I think there is a little bit more acknowledgement that that’s the case,” she said.

During COVID-19, Chicago Lights had to pivot from having personal one-on-one programs and put them on a vitural platform. Services has to be done curbside. Because connection and intimacy gets lost, there has been a lot of focus on connection. Chicago Lights also has found there is an opportunity for programs to expand and do programming with students outside of Chicago.

“In terms of philanthropy, as it relates to the social impact sector, I think instead of being so donor-centric, we’re going to be community-centric and have people tell their own stories and be really focused on the work,” Jackson said. “What I hope is we don’t have to spend so much time trying to get the dollars … that we can spend the time doing the work that needs to be done for people and we just make matches between the work and philanthropy.”

Chicago Public Library Announces Bedrock Faith As One Book, One Chicago’s 2021 20th Anniversary Selection Annual citywide reading program celebrates diversity and strengths of Chicago’s neighborhoods and communities through literature and thematic programming Chicago Public Library (CPL) announced today that Bedrock Faith by Chicago author Eric Charles May is the 2021 One Book, One Chicago selection. One Book, One Chicago is a free citywide literary program that connects Chicagoans and their communities around a singular chosen text. From September through December 2021, CPL will explore the book and many programs through this season’s central theme “Neighborhoods: Our City’s Bedrock.” Initiated in 2001, One Book, One Chicago celebrates its 20th anniversary this year with this Chicago neighborhood story.

“This year’s One Book, One Chicago selection, Bedrock Faith

by Eric Charles May, presents an opportunity to celebrate what makes our residents individually and collectively strong, as well as the connections we have to one another,” said Mayor Lori E. Bedrock Faith—May’s 2014 debut novel—starts with Gerald “Stew Pot” Reeves’s return to his close-knit, Black, and middle-class community on Chicago’s South Side after fourteen years in prison. The Parkland community is hesitant to accept him apart from his widowed and retired next-door neighbor, Mrs. Motley, who lends him a Bible as a welcoming gesture. Beneath escalating conflicts between community members lies the heart of the story: how people come together to create a community, develop deep connections, and provide a communal system of support, forgiveness, and understanding.

“It’s been often said that Chicago is a city of neighborhoods.

That my novel, Bedrock Faith, which grew out of my South Side neighborhood life, will now be counted among past One Book, One Chicago recipients is a thrill and a true honor,” said author Eric Charles May. “In writing Bedrock Faith, I created a fictive world of working-class and middle-class African Americans that reflected the community of my formative and blissfully uneventful childhood years in Morgan Park. Because of that, it is especially sweet for me that it’s the Chicago Public Library awarding my novel this wonderful distinction.”

Part of One Book, One Chicago’s programs are presented with community partners, such as Loyola University Chicago, Harold Washington College, Northeastern Illinois University, and DePaul University. DePaul University is continuing its ongoing study that explores the impact of citywide literary programs.

Bedrock Faith was published by the Brooklyn-based Akashic Books, an independent publisher founded by Johnny Temple. Akashic Books is known for its commitment to publishing urban literary fiction and political nonfiction titles outside of the mainstream literary world.

POLITICAL Affairs Senator Collins’ plan to expunge felony prostitution convictions signed into law The legislation is effective immediately.

Felony prostitution charges, which have not existed in Illinois since 2013, will be expunged under a new law signed today, the result of legislation by State Senator Jacqueline Collins (DChicago).

“The fact we have stopped charging prostitution as a felony means nothing to those whose records continue to be hurt by these charges,” said Collins (D-Chicago). “I want to thank Gov. Pritzker for signing this legislation and moving us beyond a dynamic that only serves to harm sex workers and perpetuate a dangerous, exploitative environment for them.”

While prostitution has not been prosecuted as a felony in Illinois since 2013, those with such convictions are still subject to all the penalties that come with a felony record. Included in the law is another provision that also allows defendants whose convictions may cause consequences under federal immigration law to file for a post-conviction hearing.

“Our justice system must operate on the premise that a defendant is well-informed of their rights and the consequences of their choices. There have been numerous cases in which those who plead guilty are unaware of how it may affect their immigration status, and are not well-informed by their defenders,” Collins said. “This is a step toward rectifying that.”

Senator Hunter’s bill will increase regulation in prescription monitoring program State Senator Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago), led a proposal to increase regulations for the prescription monitoring program is now law.

“Primary doctors must be aware of any prescriptions being prescribed or filled for their patients in addition to what they prescribe to ensure any unnecessary prescriptions can be eliminated,” Hunter said. “Opioid overdose rates have risen in Illinois over the last year, and I want to take all necessary precautions so that patients are not over-prescribed but get the help that they need.”

The Illinois Controlled Substances Act currently allows the PMP to issue an unsolicited report to the prescriber, dispenser, or designee informing them of potential medication shopping when a person is identified as having three or more prescribers, pharmacies, or both that do not utilize a common electronic file.

This law will allow an unsolicited report to be sent, and changes the limit on how many prescribers or pharmacies a person can have from three to five. It also aligns Illinois law with the current federal Department of Centers for Disease Control guidelines.

Senate Bill 1842 is effective immediately.

Welcoming Our Students (BPT) - The classroom environment changed tremendously throughout the pandemic, with many children studying at home full- or part-time. This meant additional gear for many, such as tablets and workbooks, while some items like backpacks went unused while studying remotely. As millions of students head back to the classroom for the start of the 2021/22 school year, backpacks will be a necessity again, and experts have some advice to ensure a safer start to the school year.

"With a focus on getting back in the classroom and returning to 'normal,' it's easy to overlook possible injuries caused by everyday school supplies," said American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons spokesperson Emily Dodwell, MD, MPH, FAAOS, a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. "Backpacks might not seem that high on the list of safety hazards for children, but if too heavy or worn improperly, they can cause pain or injury to muscles and joints.

Some potential problems could include wearing the backpack on only one shoulder, or a small child carrying heavy objects like a textbook, tablet or computer."

As part of its "Prevent Injuries America™" campaign, the AAOS is spreading the word that backpacks that are too heavy or are worn incorrectly can cause numerous problems. Improperly used backpacks may injure or overuse muscles and joints. This can lead to back, neck and shoulder pain, as well as posture problems. This is especially concerning for students in hybrid learning environments because they may need to carry more items back and forth to school and home throughout the week.

Tips for selecting and using school backpacks Shopping for a backpack is a fun part of preparing to go back to school, but many kids will prioritize fashion over function.

Caregivers can help guide children to choose a backpack they like that also benefits their well-being.

AAOS recommends backpacks that are lightweight with a waist or chest strap and two shoulder straps that are wide and padded.

Rolling backpacks are a good option as well. If your child resists using a traditional two-strap backpack, a well-structured crossbody bag may be a reasonable compromise.

The great thing about this is that teachers and parents can both get involved. A few ways you can stay up to date are reading blogs, educational articles, and looking for resources on social media. One learning resource to check out is 3M’s Science at Home video series.

This online library of DIY science experiments uses common household items to help make STEM learning fun and accessible while showing kids they can connect science to just about anything.

Teachers will also note that the step-by-step resources include national science teaching standards for easy lesson planning.

America’s favorite rapping teacher, Dwayne Reed, shares creative ways educators and parents can help kids find a “way-in” to science that will ignite their passion for STEM learning and make science more approachable: 1.
