PARENTS ENCOURAGED TO INCLUDE EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS IN BACK-TO-SCHOOL PLANS The Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) and local emergency management agencies are encouraging parents to include emergency preparedness in their back-toschool plans. New this academic school year, state law requires schools to hold a minimum of three evacuations drills while students are present to better prepare students and personnel for emergencies. Specifically, within the first 90-days of the school year, schools must conduct at least one law enforcement evacuation drill. These drills must be conducted according to the school’s emergency and crisis response plans, protocols, and procedures, according to a press release.

Every home, dorm and apartment should have the supplies needed to endure a storm, power outage or disaster. You can find a list of emergency kit essentials online at www.ready. illinois.gov.

FOOD ALLERGY PATIENT ORGANIZATIONS JOIN FORCES TO LAUNCH A PSA CALLED, “SPELL IT OUT” End Allergies Together (E.A.T.), a non-profit organization that funds research to help solve the growing food allergy epidemic, along with four food allergy patient organizations, recently launched a new Public Service Announcement (PSA) called, “Spell It Out.” The PSA promotes the need for basic food allergy education in underserved communities and stars teen actors Mace Coronel (of Nickelodeon’s Nicky, Ricky, Dicky and Dawn) and Laya Deleon Hayes (of Disney’s Doc McStuffins) as Spelling Bee judges.

ATTORNEY GENERAL RAOUL FILES LAWSUIT AGAINST EPA AFFORDABLE CLEAN ENERGY RULE Attorney General Kwame Raoul, as part of a coalition of 28 states and cities, recently announced a lawsuit against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) over its Affordable Clean Energy (ACE) rule. The ACE rule replaced the Clean Power Plan, the first-ever nationwide limit on existing fossil-fueled power plants.

“The people of Illinois and around the country cannot afford the impact of unchecked climate change,” Raoul said. “The EPA’s Affordable Clean Energy rule is a huge step backward in the effort to address the devastating effects of climate change. It is a misguided policy that ignores the science of climate change and will prolong the nation’s reliance on polluting, expensive coal power plants, and will reverse progress toward clean, renewable, affordable energy.”

The Illinois Attorney General’s office has worked since 2003 to limit carbon pollution from fossil-fueled power plants. Most recently, the Attorney General’s office joined a coalition of states, counties, and cities in filing comments in opposition to the EPA’s proposed repeal of the Clean Power Plan, and filed comments in opposition to the ACE rule as proposed.

For the second consecutive year, Chicago State University will sponsor a back-to-school parade to kick off fall classes at Chicago’s only four-year, public university on the South Side.

Fall classes begin on Monday, Aug. 26, which is the same day the one-hour parade kicks off at 8 a.m. starting at 95th Street and Martin Luther King Drive Jr. and ending five blocks away at the university’s front entrance, 95th and St. Lawrence Avenue.

And the Grand Marshal will be Andrea Zopp, former president and CEO of the Chicago Urban League, who now serves as board of trustees chairman at CSU. “Chicago State University is an important asset to the city of Chicago and the state of Illinois,” said Zopp. “As chair of the Board of Trustees, I am thrilled to provide leadership to support the renewal, transformation and elevation of CSU.” The purpose of the parade, according to Zaldwaynaka “Z” Scott, president of CSU, is to

connect students, alumni and the community with one another.

“It’s an opportunity for all of us to come together and celebrate a new year,” said Scott, who started the parade in 2018 as CSU’s newest president. “Some people may think having a parade on a Monday is odd but not me. I think having it on the actual day classes begin is a wonderful way to start the school year off.”

Unlike the annual Bud Biliken Parade, which celebrated its 90th season this month, where more than 100 floats lined the street, the CSU parade will consist of the school’s marching band, academic departments, faculty, and students. There are no sponsors to help pay for the parade, which Scott said cost less than $3,000.

“We’d rather have sponsorship for some of our academic programs and internships than a parade,” added Scott, a former federal prosecutor.

After the parade, there will be an outdoor gathering at the school’s rotunda where Scott said she will welcome students and talk about some new things underway at the school, such as a new Masters of Business Administration program and a Sept. 28 cannabis expo and job fair on campus.

While no elected officials, such as Mayor Lori Lightfoot, are scheduled to participate, Scott said many were invited, and “hopefully their schedules will allow them to attend.”

One person who does plan on attending is William Barfield, 76, a longtime West Chesterfield resident, who lives near CSU at 95th Street and Vernon Avenue.

“I grew up in this neighborhood and I try to be a part of everything that goes on here,” said Barfield. “Chicago State is a part of this community and I try to support the school as best as I can. Having this parade is a wonderful way to bring the community together.”

Nearly 3,000 students attend CSU, according to Scott, who said her goal is to continue increasing enrollment by building stronger relationships with local high schools.

“We want to make sure our neighboring schools know we offer STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers,” added Scott. “We are number one in the Midwest when it comes to graduating African Americans in STEM, and our College of Pharmacy has been recognized as being one of the best in the country.”

Federal Court Rules Facebook Users Can Sue Company Over Unlawful Use Of Face Recognition Technology The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit recently ruled that Facebook users can sue the company over its use of face recognition technology. The ruling is the first decision of an American appellate court directly addressing the unique privacy harms posed by the face recognition technology being increasingly pushed on members of the public without their knowledge and consent.

The ruling in Patel v. Facebook affirms the district court’s certification of a class of Facebook users in Illinois who have alleged that the company violated their rights under their state’s Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA).

The Illinois statute imposes protections against companies

collecting and storing biometric information, including using face recognition technology, without the user’s knowledge and consent.

The suit alleges that Facebook’s practice of using face recognition technology to identify users in digital images uploaded to the site without disclosing its use of face recognition or obtaining consent violates state law.

“This decision is a strong recognition of the dangers of unfettered use of face surveillance technology,” said Nathan Freed Wessler, staff attorney with the ACLU Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project. “The capability to instantaneously identify and track people based on their faces raises chilling potential for privacy vio-

lations at an unprecedented scale.

Both corporations and the government are now on notice that this technology poses unique risks to people’s privacy and safety.”

The ruling allows the case to move forward as a class action in district court. In an opinion by Judge Ikuta, the court “concludes that the development of a face template using facial-recognition technology without consent (as alleged here) invades an individual’s private affairs and concrete interests.” As the court explained, “the facial-recognition technology at issue here can obtain information that is ‘detailed, encyclopedic, and effortlessly compiled,’ which would be almost impossible without such technology.” In light of these harms,

the court found that the plaintiffs had alleged sufficient privacy injuries to have standing to sue.

“BIPA’s innovative protections for biometric information are now enforceable in federal court,” added Rebecca Glenberg, senior staff attorney at the ACLU of Illinois. “If a corporation violates a statute by taking your personal information without your consent, you do not have to wait until your data is stolen or misused to go to court. As our General Assembly understood when it enacted BIPA, a strong enforcement mechanism is crucial to hold companies accountable when they violate our privacy laws.

Corporations that misuse Illinoisans sensitive biometric data now do so at their own peril.”

NEWS Tens of Thousands Of Backpacks Filled With School Supplies For Chicago Kids

The fourth Annual Ready for School Backpack-A-Thon recently took place downtown and more than 800 volunteers packed 50,000 backpacks full of school supplies for students in Chicago. The event was hosted

by Cradles to Crayons, a national nonprofit working with homeless and low-income youth, and was sponsored by Bank of America.

“Backpack-A-Thon is really the culmination of our Ready For School initiative. Over the summer and heading into the school year we are focused on getting kids in the Chicagoland [area] all the supplies they need to start the year off right.

Backpack-A-Thon is our event where we have hundreds of volunteers working to stuff 50,000 backpacks in three hours for Chicagoland kids,” said Shoshana Buchholz-Miller, executive director of Cradles to Crayons.

During the event, the backpacks were filled with all required school supplies for the Chicago Public School students and following the event the backpacks were delivered to various participating schools, clubs, and community partners to ensure that all the students were ready for their first day with their backpacks full of supplies.

“Bank of America understands it’s role as a large corporation not only throughout the country but also locally and how important it is to give back to the communities that we work and live in,” said Hughes.

Working with both Cradles to Crayons and Bank of America, Hughes sees the impact that volunteerism has on corporate employees and how the backpacks benefit children in Chicago. Hughes said that Bank of America’s involvement in this event “isn’t just about writing a check to Cradles to Crayons.” The bank’s employees and clients look forward to participating every year.

“It’s a really fun day and people can help in all different ways. A lot of us have children and know how important it

is for kids to have that brand new backpack with the school supplies and it touches all of us to think that there are kids in Chicago who are concerned about going to school because they might not have the things that they need to be able to go to school every day,” said Hughes.

Through her involvement as a Cradles to Crayon board member, Hughes said she has been able to make an impact on her own family and the “unintended perk” she has gotten from all of this is that her children have learned the importance of giving back.

“For me personally, my kids used to get a brand new backpack every year and because of Cradles to Crayons, my kids now say that they don’t need one and they want to donate their new backpack to the organization.

For them to say that makes a big difference to me,” said Hughes.

Local Collaborative Aims to Address Violence In Nine Neighborhoods Across Chicago

Communities Partnering For Peace, a collaborative organization convened by Metropolitan Family Services, was created to provide the framework for a long-term approach to reducing violence in Chicago. Nine established anti-violence organizations were selected to make up the collaborative where they work together to share resources and create violence reduction strategies which are then implemented in the communities they serve.

“Communities Partnering for Peace is a collaborative made up of nine organizations including Metropolitan Family Services. Our goal is to reduce violence in Chicago,” said Vaughn Bryant, executive director of Communities Partnering For Peace.

The nine organizations that make up the Communities Partnering For Peace collaborative were chosen after a Request For Proposal process that was conducted by Metropolitan Family Services.

“These are organizations that have been doing this for a lot of years prior,” said Bryant. “Street outreach has been done in some way since the 1940s or 50s and in more recent times, there has started to be some state funding and private funding going towards these organizations,” said Bryant.

Communities Partnering For Peace is currently working in nine Chicago neighborhoods including Austin, Englewood, West Englewood, North Lawndale, Little Village, Garfield Park, East Garfield Park, Back of the Yards, and Humboldt Park.

Through Communities Partnering For Peace, the Peace Academy at Kennedy-King College in Englewood was created to help professionalize street outreach work in Chicago. The Peace Academy offers comprehensive training for community outreach workers and helps them develop the skills they need to reach their targeted population.

the relationship between trauma, family violence, and street violence and provides them with ways to support community members as they return from incarceration and reduce recidivism, according to information provided by Metropolitan Family Services.

“What we have done is put together a 144hour curriculum to professionalize [street outreach] work. We want this to be seen as a legitimate profession that people can go into that has a clear career ladder attached to it,” said Bryant. “We are really trying to build a network of outreach workers across the city because if you have a large amount of peacemakers who are on the same page and who understand each other then it builds a momentum that is going to sustain and change the trajectory of our city over the next 10 or 15 years.”

So far, the Peace Academy has trained street outreach workers from about 15 different communities and about 21 different organizations and the goal is to establish a certification process to even further legitimize the training they provide.

One of our goals is to have a certification process,” said Bryant. “If there are standards of practice, then it’s legitimized amongst community members and when they see Communities Partnering For Peace or the Metropolitan Family Services Peace Academy, they will know what to expect from them.”

As part of the weekend events, representatives of HHF volunteered at the wear blue Mile at the Chicago Rock and Roll Half Marathon. The mile is lined with posters filled with faces of fallen service members, followed by volunteers holding flags adorned with their names.

HHF encourages growth and development by funding projects that address community challenges in the areas of health, education, housing, and overall community support. The organization’s focus is to improve the quality of life for military families who sacrifice so much day-in and day-out.

“We were honored to be a part of the wear blue event which served as a stark reminder why it is so critical to continue supporting our military members and their families,” stated John Ehle, president of HHF. “With more than 7,000 Service Members killed since the Global War on Terror began, wear blue helps ensure their service and sacrifice are not forgotten. Study Finds 1 in 5 US Workers Age 40 and Over Have Experienced Age Discrimination in the Workplace Hiscox, the international specialist insurer, recently released its 2019 Hiscox Ageism in the Workplace StudyTM, which revealed that 21% of US workers age 40 and older have experienced discrimination in the workplace due to their age, and respondents believe they’re most likely to experience it at age 51.

The study, which surveyed 400 full-time U.S. workers age 40 and over, also found that more than two-thirds (67%) of respondents 65 or younger plan to continue working after they turn 66, and 62% of all workers did not receive any form of age discrimination training in the previous 12 months.

“Age discrimination in the workplace is an increasingly serious issue for businesses and employees as older generations continue to maintain their professional careers longer than their predecessors,” said Patrick Mitchell, management liability product head at Hiscox USA. “Discrimination of any kind brings serious reputational and financial risks to any business and can negatively impact a worker’s career trajectory. As such, businesses must take the necessary steps to prevent, detect and mitigate any instances of age discrimination in the workplace in order to fully protect their organization and employees.”

Most Remain Silent Although over one in five respondents shared that they faced age discrimination in the workplace themselves, only 40% filed a charge or complaint. Their reasons for staying silent included the fear of a report creating a hostile work environment (54%) and a lack of knowledge on how to initiate a complaint (24%).

Witnesses, too, were more likely to stay quiet. More than half (51%) of workers who witnessed age discrimination against another employee did not report it, and 62% pointed to a fear of retaliation by their employers as the reason for not speaking up.

Gender Plays a Role in Workplace Ageism While prior Hiscox data found that women are more likely to experience harassment in the workplace, the 2019 Hiscox Ageism in the Workplace StudyTM found that men were more likely to feel that their advancing age adversely impacted their careers.

Forty-three percent of men felt that their age has been a barrier to finding a new job since turning 40 years old, compared to less than one-third (30%) of women. More than one-third (39%) of men reported that age frustrated their career advancement since turning 40, compared to 24% of women.

How to Combat Ageism in the Workplace Businesses should take the following steps to prevent, detect and mitigate age discrimination in the workplace: l Prevent age discrimination by providing workforce training. l Detect age discrimination by watching for behaviors that indicate older workers are being harassed, excluded from projects and underrepresented in new hiring and promotions. l Mitigate the risks and exposure associated with age discrimination by responding to claims immediately and thoroughly.

The Cost of Ageism in the Workplace Often subject to common stereotypes regarding older workers, 80% of respondents who experienced age discrimination reported that it had impacted their career trajectory.

In addition to ageism impacting employee productivity, organizations face the loss of talent and institutional knowledge when older employees leave a company. In fact, 43% of respondents reported that they had left a company due to experiencing or witnessing age discrimination.

National Survey Reveals Dramatic Shift From Cable to Streaming Services The market research team at Colling Media, a top-ranked national digital advertising and marketing agency, has conducted a nationwide survey about cable-cutting and subscribing to streaming services.

Key findings include: l Migration away from cable is picking up speed—20% of respondents canceled their cable television subscription within the past two months. l There’s a corresponding move toward streaming services—39% of consumers have subscribed to a streaming service in the past two months (such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video). l 87% of consumers have watched a program, movie or video on a desktop or laptop computer, tablet, smartphone, or other mobile device within the past two months. l 39% of consumers say they are likely or very likely to subscribe to The Disney Company’s bundling of Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu. l 73% of consumers say they are annoyed when an ad interrupts a YouTube video. Her family stated that they were blessed to have had her in their lives for this long. They are extremely proud that Rosie is still mobile and is still have a sound mind. Dedication of Coach Carl E. Bonner Sports Training Room and Study Hall At Wendell Phillips High School Coach Carl E. Bonner coached football and track at Wendell Phillips High School for 34 years. Coach Bonner was one of the first to be named a head football coach in the Public League. His outstanding coaching produced great players, some entering the NFL, i.e. Milton Biggins drafted by the Miami Dolphins under Don Schula and also played for the Dallas Cowboys where he was a member of the 92 Super Bowl Champions. Coach Bonner also developed and coached championship track teams that won the State Championship in 1962. The current football coach, Troy McAllister is quoted as saying "today at this dedication our intentions are to keep Coach Carl E. Bonner's legacy alive. We believe that it is a great, positive and successful model for our teams to follow. We want to impress these students with the model every time they walk into this room and see Coach Carl E. Bonner's name imprinted on this door, that they will be motivated and remember his great legacy." Coach Bonner's younger son Tony, Coach's sister Joyce, and his brother Brain Bonner were in attendance.

His Father a retired police sergeant managed to shoot and kill one of the perpetrator; with the other two being apprehended.The shooter Marcus Floyd received life in prison. Superintendent then Commander of the 6th Dist Eddie Johnson,forrmer Alderman Freddrenna Lyle and Sgt. Dwayne Betts, celebrated his life during “Peace in Park”, a day that the community takes back their neighborhood allowing the kids to camp out all night in the Parkwithout fear.

BROWN MEMORIAL PARK DEDICATION

Sydney Brown Park held a dedication ceremony for new improverments to the Park. On hand for the celebration were many relativies sporting a t-shirt stating “That’s My Cuzin” family reunion. The study also found that while borrowing covered 24 percent of overall college costs, 57 percent of the families who borrowed to pay for college say they had always planned to do so as part of their paying-forcollege strategy. What’s more, many families are getting a head start on paying their loans back, with 41 percent making payments on student loans while the student is in school.

Families are being proactive in other ways, too. Seventy-seven percent of families completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 201819 academic year. Completing the FAFSA is the first step in receiving a financial aid award letter from schools. Of those who filed for the 2019-20 academic year, 25 percent did so in October, the first month the application is available. On the other hand, the majority of families waited until January or later to file, potentially missing out on free money for college.

EDUCATION More Families Have a Plan to Pay for College (StatePoint) College may be getting more expensive, but new research suggests that more families are preparing to meet those costs one way or another.

Eighty percent of families say they are confident in how they paid for college last year, and nearly half have a plan to pay for all years of college, according to “How America Pays for College 2019,” a recent study from Sallie Mae and Ipsos, an independent global market research company.

All this preparation could be attributed to the fact that the overwhelming majority of families recognize the value of higher education, with 90 percent of families agreeing college is an investment.

“The individual and socio-economic benefits of a college education are clear, so it’s particularly gratifying to see that families continue to view college as a worthwhile investment,” says Raymond J. Quinlan, chairman and CEO, Sallie Mae. On average, families report spending $26,226 on college in academic year 201819, with a sizeable portion of costs -- 43 percent -- covered out-of-pocket through income and savings.

Scholarships, grants, and gifts -- used by 82 percent of families -- covered 33 percent of costs, and that “free money” can be especially important, both logistically and psychologically, opening doors to opportunities that would be otherwise unavailable and even making a difference in the way students view the college experience as a whole.

To help students everywhere gear up for a successful school year, celebrated actor, author, humanitarian and G2 Overachiever, Priyanka Chopra Jonas is sharing tips for making more happen.

Tip 1: Set specific goals: Writing down goals and aspirations can get you started on the right note. To-date, McKenna’s charity has helped feed over 700 families by growing and donating an estimated 18,300 pounds of fresh produce.

by Chopra Jonas from a pool of highly qualified nominees. Together with Pilot, she’ll award McKenna and his school a combined $15,000 grant. He plans to use his $12,500 portion for college tuition, to gain the skills needed to make an even greater impact on social issues like hunger. The remaining $2,500 will go to his school to help continue fostering overachievement among its students.
