Gyrls in the H.O.O.D. Foundation has found a way to provide shelter to young women and to do their part when it comes to youth homelessness. The organization has identified to two young women who will move into H.O.O.D. House unit.

Gyrls in the H.O.O.D. (Healthy Optimistic Outstanding Determined) Foundation was founded

by Chez Smith in 2016 with the mission to increase positive reproductive health outcomes of young girls and adolescents. The mission is also to create a positive narrative for teenage girls who live in zip codes, which often have negative stereotypes placed on them.

With the work Gyrls in the H.O.O.D. Foundation does, Smith found that a lot of the young women they encountered did not have stable housing. It impacted the way the organization delivers its services. Those young women couldn’t focus because their basic need – housing – was not being met.

H.O.O.D House was an idea Smith had throughout the years. Recently with COVID-19, Shelters had to reduce their capacity, which left www.citizennewspapergroup.com

some young women without a place to stay. Those young women who experience homelessness are still able to hold jobs and go to school despite not having a place to go at night.

Smith applied for funding from the Chicago Foundation for Women and reached out to some of her contacts. A contact had a unit in a building they recently purchased.

Gyrls in the H.O.O.D. Foundation was able to secure the unit and secure funding for the first year.

“I wanted to work with girls who were actively employed or looking for employment, who were trying to make a better life for themselves and just needed a chance, a launching pad,” Smith said.

Smith put out a call for applications and reached out to the girls that she had worked with in the past. The process was hard because Smith could only do so much, and the need was so great. The organization received 25 applications. For those not chosen, Smith still wanted to be able to provide referral services to those in need.

Smith is happy with the two young women that were chosen. The two young women, ages 18-21, will live in the furnished unit for one year rent free. They will have access to wraparound support from community

partners, which includes mental health services and financial literacy classes.

The goal is to purchase a building to house young women and provide resources and services to them.

Smith realizes this segment of the population really needs help.

“There are a lot of young girls out here. There are so many negative outcomes that can happen, whether young people start participating in survival sex and or sex trafficking.

Here’s another area that I think society here in Chicago, we need to start looking at, having more compassion for and seeing how we all can help,” Smith said.

Felicia Davis, President and CEO of Chicago Foundation for Women President, said the organization is proud to support the efforts of Gyrls in the H.O.O.D. Foundation, and other organizations like it -community-led and grassroots.

“Housing insecurity affects many people in our communities, but especially young people. H.O.O.D. House is an opportunity for girls experiencing housing insecurity to receive health information, counseling, and other supports,” Davis said.

(In)Justice for All Film Festival International Scheduled August 12-21 Free Virtual Event to Feature Films, Poets, and Panel Discussions Trinity United Church of Christ, Senior Pastor Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III, and The Next Movement announce the 7th (In)Justice for All Film Festival (IFAFF), scheduled August 12-21. Because of the pandemic, this much-anticipated fest remains FREE of charge and will be virtual.

This year, the IFAFF has partnered with Eventive, a well-established and respected virtual film distribution platform.

The IFAFF brings audiences films that explore America’s criminal justice system – police, courts, and corrections – and the industries that profit from this cauldron of human misery. Stories told include those of millions of people who are relegated to second-class citizenship under an unforgiving system. Stories also highlight how other countries are successfully addressing this issue, as well as showcasing best practices right here in America.

The virtual 7th IFAFF International will screen feature-length documentaries, feature films, and topical shorts, all with themes centered on the epidemic of mass incarceration, the criminal (in) justice system, racism and white supremacy, gun violence, police brutality, unfair housing, immigration, social unrest, and other human rights violations.

The film festival brings additional context to the films and their messages through a variety of panel conversations as well as the inclusion of spoken word segments. It also includes a film competition for new movies and “Justice Awards” for exceptional films that best demonstrate the challenges and tragedies of our broken justice systems. While the focus is on new films that are submitted into the competition, a variety of older films highlighting the historical perspectives of today’s challenges also are screened.

The Next Movement (TNM) was born as a response to a 2010 visit and lecture

by Professor Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, held at Trinity United Church of Christ. TNM, organized as a committee of the Trinity United Church of Christ Prison Ministry, is comprised of people of all races, ages, and religions who view mass incarceration as the key human rights issue of our time, and who are committed to building the mass movement necessary to alleviate it. Through education, awareness and organizing individuals and organizations, TNM is dedicated to mobilizing the “people power” necessary to make the systemic changes required.

POLITICAL Affairs New Belt law speeds up airport construction Major Illinois airports will directly receive and spend federal funding thanks to a measure sponsored by State Senator Christopher Belt (DSwansea) that was signed into law Friday.

The new law allows Illinois airports that have 10,000 or more patrons per year to directly receive and spend federal funding. Under the current law, federal funding goes to the Illinois Department of Transportation’s aeronautics division to distribute to airports across the state, with the exception of O’Hare and Midway International Airports in Chicago.

“This will give the major airports in Illinois the authority to make their own financial decisions in a timely manner,” Belt said. “This should help IDOT get these important projects done faster and reduce a considerable backlog.”

Currently, IDOT must approve all planning, construction, development and improvements to hangars. The approval process for these contracts has caused significant delays, and this measure would take the pressure off of IDOT and allow individual airports to move forward with projects on their own timelines.

“Larger airports in Illinois have the resources to manage the funding and make necessary decisions for the projects,” Belt said. “It’s important we include all major airports in the state, not just O’Hare and Midway, to speed up the approval process.”

The law takes effect Jan. 1, 2022.

America imprisons more citizens than any other nation in the world. Currently, there are over 2.2 million prisoners, a rate of more than 698 per 100,000 citizens. This number does not include the accelerated detentions over the last several years associated with immigration, which in 2011, averaged more than 30,000 daily. As of March 2019, that figure rose to nearly 50,000. Currently, over 600,000 people reside in jails throughout America. The majority are awaiting trial, and, according to our system of justice, are presumed innocent.

Recently celebrated the signing of legislation he sponsored that would allow local school councils of Chicago Public Schools to fill vacancies in almost any situation under the Peters Law. “Parents, students and other members of the community have the right to have a say in how the schools in their area are run, and local school councils are how that right is realized,” Peters said. “If a small technical rule prevents them from being able to meet, then they need to have the recourse to fix that issue, and this law accomplishes this.”

In general, a local school council is not prevented from filling its own vacancies; however, when membership drops below the minimum number required to start a meeting, LSCs often find their hands tied. Senate Bill 652 lowers the minimum number of member required from seven to four so that vacancies can always be filled – even in situations with a large number of vacancies.

“We’re coming out of a global pandemic that put the future of public education into a state of uncertainty, so it’s extremely important that local school councils are still able to meet and make decisions about how schools are run,” Peters said.

The new law is effective immediately. Earlier in the year, it had passed both chambers of the General Assembly with no opposition.

Senator Martwick Law Will Strengthen Chicago Park District Pension System State Senator Robert Martwick (D-Chicago) sponsored a new law that would help in securing the future of the pension system of the Chicago Park District by requiring it to follow expert recommendations, ensuring park district employees receive the money they’re owed in retirement.

“Many people rely on their pensions for financial security later in life,” Martwick said. “Ensuring the Chicago Park District pays its pensions according to industry standards will help it get back on track and ensure its employees have the funds necessary to retire.”

House Bill 417 eliminates the “multiplier” employee contribution method and instead mandates actuarially required payments be made based on real actuarial calculations by 2024. This law also provides a payment ramp for the Chicago Park District, which requires a $40 million employer contribution in 2021.

It also permits the district to issue up to $250 million in pension obligation bonds.

“Park district employees work hard and deserve to collect the pensions they’ve earned,” Martwick said. “Instead of kicking the can down the road on the pension funding problem, we’re fixing it now.”

The new law was signed by the governor on Friday and takes effect immediately.

Baker, Adegoke Steve Colson and Rudresh Mahanthappa The American Composers Forum (ACF) is proud to announce the culminating event of its two-year partnership with the Chicagobased, internationally-renowned Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and its Great Black Music Ensemble: a concert celebrating the 55th anniversary of AACM, taking place at AACM’s long-time partner the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts (915 E. 60th Street) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30.
