NEWS briefly EDUCATION STUDENT WINNERS ANNOUNCED FOR 9TH ANNUAL “PROJECT YELLOW LIGHT” SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST The Ad Council and Project Yellow Light recently announced the winners of the ninth annual Project Yellow Light scholarship competition. The contest involves students creating a TV, radio or billboard PSA to educate their peers about the dangers of distracted driving, specifically the dangers of using a phone while driving. The winning PSAs were recently revealed on a digital billboard in New York City’s Times Square, in space donated by Clear Channel Outdoor.

Project Yellow Light was established in 2007 by the family of Hunter Garner to honor his memory after his death in a car crash at age 16. Since 2011, Project Yellow Light has partnered with the Ad Council to turn the winning submissions into PSAs that receive national exposure through 1,600 TV stations nationwide, iHeartMedia radio stations, and Clear Channel Outdoor’s nearly 2,000 digital displays. The contest received 2,163 submissions this year. Entries were received from students representing all fifty states and Washington, D.C.

EPA APPROVES LYSOL DISINFECTANT SPRAY FOR USE AGAINST COVID-19 The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced the approval of using Lysol Disinfectant Spray to protect against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

Manufactured by RB (Reckitt Benckiser), Lysol Disinfectant Spray was also reviewed in a peer-reviewed study of its effectiveness against SARS-CoV-2, which was published in the American Journal of Infection Control (AJIC).

Lysol Disinfectant Spray (EPA Reg No. 777-99) and Lysol Disinfectant Max Cover Mist (EPA Reg No. 777-127) are the first disinfectant products approved by the EPA to be effective against SARS-CoV-2. Before products can legally make claims that they can kill a particular pathogen such as SARS-CoV-2, the claim must be authorized by the EPA based on a review of data. Lysol Disinfectant Spray was tested per EPA testing guidelines and was found to kill the virus at 2 minutes of use.

DEPAUL UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF LAW RECEIVES $1 MILLION GIFT TO ESTABLISH KOPPLE SCHOLARS ENDOWMENT The DePaul University College of Law recently announced the Kopple Scholars Endowment, made possible through a $1 million gift from alumnus Robert C. Kopple. Beginning in 2022, the endowment will provide recognition and financial support for two full-time law students who demonstrate outstanding academic credentials.

“We are so grateful to Bob and Carole Kopple for their strong belief in DePaul’s mission and for their commitment to academic excellence,” said Jennifer Rosato Perea, dean of the college. “The Kopple Scholars Endowment will enable us to attract and retain some of the most academically stellar students and continue to build our law school’s strong national reputation in a competitive environment.

Kopple earned two degrees from DePaul: a Juris Doctor (J.D.) in 1967 and a bachelor’s degree in 1965. While at DePaul, Kopple served as associate editor of the Law Review. He later received an LLM in taxation in 1968 from New York University. Co-founder of the Los Angeles-based firm Kopple and Klinger (now Kopple, Klinger & Elbaz LLP) in 1992, he has spent his entire career in estate planning, taxation and business law. Among other notable skills, Kopple is respected for assisting clients with complex estate and gift tax issues, including noncitizens and nonresidents of the United States.

Sales professional creates ‘The World’s FIRST Sales Dictionary’ Continued from page 1

Khristian Leslie took his years of experience in business and sales to create “The World’s FIRST Sales Dictionary.” The book includes techniques, terms and tools that Leslie believes are essential for sales professionals.

Leslie said he created the dictionary because it was something that was needed, and it didn’t exist.

“Sales is something everybody does, they just don’t know they’re doing it when they’re doing it,” he said. “And, people who do it professionally, are so poorly trained for the most part.”

Leslie said when it comes to sales, terms and techniques, people can’t tell you exactly what techniques they’re using. They can give you an anecdotal answer, but anecdotal answers are not “what you get in any other profession,” he contends. He added, in most professions, there are specific names and procedures for everything.

“People in those professions, know the names and procedures, can relay them to people and it creates a sense of trust between the professional and the person seeking the service from that person,” he said. “It gives that professional more of a sense of pride, more of a sense of integrity, more of [a] sense of right and wrong.”

Leslie said the dictionary is intended to help people use sales techniques to efficiently communicate, personally and professionally. He said it’s designed to be read from cover to cover and includes 189 terms. Because there’s a lot of great information in the world that people never get to because they have so many pages in a book to contend with, Leslie said he designed the book that way “on purpose.”

professional should always be ready to ask for or be ready to take the order from a customer. He said the book also gives insight on sales to consumers who are not quite experienced on the terminology salespeople use when they want to make a sale. “It creates a more informed consumer and a better salesperson, hopefully,” he said. “It’s for the consumer and the salesperson.”

Leslie, who is finishing the audio version of the book, is also working on a second book, which he said will be a complement to the first. He added the books are for everybody. “You’re already selling. This is about teaching people how to do it on purpose and how to do it well,” he said. He added that it’s okay to do. “It’s okay to sell to people,” he said.

esty are important in sales and help sustain the sales relationship. “Just tell people what you’re up to. And, if you do that, then you’ll feel better.

Then, the sale sticks,” he said.

“When you sell something the right way, they keep it, they won’t return it.”

Lawsuit seeking compensation for store closures should be tossed, state says

Springfield — Illinois’ attorney general recently asked a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit alleging Gov. JB Pritzker’s executive orders closing non-essential businesses and workplaces are unconstitutional.

A group of Chicagoland business owners argued the governor’s COVID-19 restrictions amount to the confiscation of private property without monetary compensation. Such an action would violate the U.S. and Illinois constitutions, they say.

Those orders “caused the seizure of private property, business interests and livelihoods of individuals across the state, forcing indefinite closures and the layoff of hundreds of thousands of people,” according to the group’s complaint, an amended version of which was filed in June.

Their lawsuit asks a U.S. district court judge to compel the state to pay all “similarly situated persons, companies and entities ... just compensation.”

But the state in a filed response contends that would be “entirely unreasonable” because the relevant executive orders have expired, allowing all businesses in Illinois to reopen. In its response to the lawsuit, it points out all the businesses listed in the lawsuit have resumed operations.

And any request that might affect future restrictions is “speculative,” the state says in the document.

Also, the attorney general’s office said, because a federal court is constitutionally barred from forcing a state to pay damages as the businesses are asking, the suit should be dismissed.

Alan Bruggeman, a Mokena-based attorney representing the group, wrote in a court filing that by classifying some businesses as essential and others as non-essential, Pritzker’s executive orders were “applied in a completely arbitrary and capricious manner.”

The governor’s actions, he added, “simply picked winners and losers without regard to” Illinoisans’ right to petition the government to reconsider its COVID-19-related rules.

“Never in the history of this nation and certainly in the history of the State of Illinois has a state government issued such sweeping executive orders that so extensively and so completely usurped the private property rights of individual business owners for a

public person,” the business owners argued in a court document. “The business class members have been called upon to sacrifice all economically beneficial use of their property in the name of the ‘common good.’

Without just compensation, … (they) will be saddled with the cost of paying for government action to ‘flatten the curve’ of the COVID-19 epidemic for the benefit of all Illinoisans.”

In its response, the attorney general’s office argued mitigating the novel coronavirus’ spread for the benefit of state residents does not violate either the U.S. or Illinois constitution. Pritzker, they wrote, used his “police powers,” not eminent domain, which would have required monetary compensation.

They added that all owners of private property in the U.S. are under an “implied obligation” to not use it in a way that would harm their community. “Necessary restrictions” on Illinois businesses during the pandemic were designed to “protect the health and lives” of all residents.

“The state is sensitive to the economic impact that COVID-19 has had on its residents and has continually adapted its response to COVID-19 to allow for more businesses to open with proper regulations in place,” the attorney general’s office wrote. “However, the temporary closure of certain businesses is not unduly oppressive, as required to negate the police power.”

If a judge were to agree with the business owners, the state argued, “even orders temporarily closing businesses violating health codes, fire-damaged buildings, or crime scenes would require compensation.”

Companies do not have a fundamental right to conduct business without regulation.

They should, Bruggeman wrote, have a right to advocate for themselves in court.

Business owners named in the lawsuit include Samantha Palya, owner of Palos Hills-based Absolutely Pawfect Pet Styling Inc.; Amanda Hamerman, owner of Color Envy Inc. in Bolingbrook; James Van Dam, owner of Mokena-based Van Dam Auto and Truck Repair; Jeff Carpenter, owner of Caveo Learning in Schaumburg; and John Brown, owner of Chipper’s Grill in Streator.

The group has until Aug. 31 to respond to the state’s request that the lawsuit be dismissed.

U.S. Postal Service to Review Stamp Honoring Supremes Florence Ballard

Supremes legend Mary Wilson is on a crusade that she hopes will end with the United States Postal Service commemorating her late bandmate and close friend Florence Ballard on a Forever Stamp.

“I get so emotional when I speak about Flo,” said Wilson, who received a 2020 NNPA Lifetime Achievement Award during the Black Press of America’s recently completed virtual convention.

“I’ve been working hard to get that recognition for her because she deserves it.”

Wilson noted that the U.S. Postal Service has done a brilliant job of issuing commemorative postage stamps about iconic pop culture heroes who have helped shape the world.

In the past, there have been U.S. Postage Stamps to celebrate the lives and accomplishments of several music business legends, including Elvis Presley, Sarah Vaughn, Patsy Cline, Jimi Hendryx, Marvin Gaye, and Janis Joplin.

Wilson’s quest to get the U.S. Postal Service to issue a stamp to celebrate Ballard, a founding star of The Supremes, has gained momentum.

“We have received a proposal from the public, and it will be reviewed at our next Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee meeting,” Roy Betts, a U.S. Postal Service spokesman, told BlackPressUSA. The U.S. Postal Service and the members of the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee (CSAC) have set specific criteria used in determining the eligibility of subjects for commemoration on all U.S. stamps and stationery, Betts added.

The Postal Service will honor extraordinary and enduring contributions to American society, history, culture, or environment.

U.S. stamp programs are planned and developed two to three years in advance and, consideration would occur if suggestions are submitted three or more years in advance of the proposed stamp.

In 2018, the Postal Service began considering proposals for deceased individuals three years following their death.

Officials noted that the stamp program commemorates positive contributions to American life, history, culture, and environment.

Born in Detroit in 1943, Ballard was the eighth of Jesse and Lurlee Ballard’s thirteen children.

Almost from the start, music played an essential part in her life, according to her biography.

first teacher, and a young Ballard displayed a keen interest in his music.

Jesse Ballard would play particular songs and teach his daughter to sing them.

Those early lessons made a deep impression, and legend has it that Florence Ballard was soon out-singing her father.

Ballard’s musical gift was hard to go unnoticed.

As she grew older, she found an outlet for her singing in school music classes and choirs.

While in her early teens, Ballard’s career was set in motion.

Two of her neighbors, Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams, sang in a group called the Primes (later to become the Temptations).

They introduced her to manager Milton Jenkins, who was so impressed with the 14-year-old’s voice that he asked her to perform as a soloist along with the Primes. After Ballard appeared with the group for a few engage-

ments, Jenkins knew he had found an outstanding talent, her biography read.

Since groups were popular in the late 1950s, Jenkins suggested that Ballard form a sister group to the Primes.

Immediately she asked her friend, Mary Wilson, to be a member of the group. Betty McGlown and Mary’s friend, Diana Ross, were also recruited.

After gaining their parent’s permission, the four teenagers, in the spring of 1959, became officially known as the Primettes.

They began rehearsals with Ballard as the lead singer.

McGlown departed just before the group found fame at Motown with the name, The Supremes. Ballard died in 1976 at the age of 31.

“The memories are so vivid,” Wilson said. “Florence Ballard was such a wonderful person. It’s my sincere hope that we can get the Postal Service to honor her now.”

Ford and National Urban League Launch $600,000 Initiative to Help Black Small Business Owners Hardest Hit By COVID-19 The New York Urban League is the recipient of a $100,000 grant from Ford and The National Urban League to continue its work in support of small businesses in the wake of COVID-19.

Ford Motor Company and its philanthropic arm, Ford Motor Company Fund, are joining with the National Urban League to provide $600,000 in grants to Black business owners negatively afflicted by COVID-19. The Emergency Capital Access Program (ECAP) will provide small grants, combined with technical assistance and advisory services, to Black business owners through National Urban League affiliates in Los Angeles, Detroit, New Orleans, Atlanta, Chicago and New York.

Each city will receive $100,000, enabling National Urban League affiliates to provide crucial economic support to businesses providing a stabilizing influence for

communities hard hit by the pandemic.

Arva Rice, president and CEO of the New York Urban League said, “With this extraordinarily generous grant, we will be able to serve even more people as the pandemic continues to disproportionately impact Black and Brown communities and business owners.”

“Small businesses are a cornerstone of the African American community and play a vital role in their economic success,” said Pamela Alexander, director of Community Development, Ford Motor Company Fund. “The impact of the COVID pandemic has created economic uncertainty that necessitates immediate action. Our long-term partnership with the National Urban League allows us to quickly mobilize an initiative such

as the Emergency Capital Access Program to get immediate assistance to those businesses in need.”

The ECAP initiative will be managed by local Urban League officials in each of the six cities.

Here’s how the program will work: l The Urban League Entrepreneurship Center, along with other partner agencies, will recruit qualified businesses as possible grant recipients; l Qualified applicants will be awarded grants of $2,000 - $5,000 for the remainder of 2020. l Qualified applicants must participate in pre-grant counseling services to access shortterm needs. l Funding priority will be given to “personto-person” businesses heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and those located

in Census tracts with greater than 25% Black residency.

Retail and Its Future Through the 2020 Back-to-School Prism Back-to-school shopping is the second-busiest season of the year, in terms of overall spending, according to the National Retail Federation. Consumers spent an average of $976 on back-to-school shopping in 2019, compared to $1,047 in the November-December holiday season.

Across the board, retailers with strong e-commerce positions are likely to perform better this season, says Jie Zhang the Harvey Sanders Fellow of Retail Management at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business.

Early indicators show retailers seeing a significant bump in demand for technology products, she says, as parents look to equip their kids at much younger grade levels with electronic devices such as laptops, tablets, headphones, and webcams, because of the shift to online learning.

Meanwhile, other traditional back-to-school items, such as clothing, footwear, home furnishings and small appliances for dorm living, are likely to languish on shelves. With many colleges and universities offering hybrid learning or all-remote options, fewer young adults are heading off to live on campuses.

“It’s not surprising to see who

the biggest winners are,” Zhang says. “Companies like Amazon, Walmart, Target, Best Buy and Apple, all have these capabilities.

For Best Buy and Apple, in particular, selling technology products online is a major advantage due to the heightened demand for those products.”

By contrast, department stores like JCPenney, Macy’s and Kohl’s, and apparel stores such as Gap are likely to struggle, dragged down by the lackluster demand for their merchandise and less-thanrobust e-commerce operations, Zhang says. Brick-and-mortar shopping these days is less of a draw, as states around the country report an upsurge in COVID-19 infections.

“People are very reluctant to go back into stores in large enclosed spaces, even as lockdown restrictions are lifted,” Zhang says. “Department stores and mall-based apparel retailers had been struggling long before the pandemic, and COVID has served as a catalyst to propel the failure of some of them.”

Illinois Gaming Board Approves Hawthorne Race Course To Move Forward With Casino Development Thirty years after Illinois passed legislation legalizing ten casinos to operate throughout the state, Hawthorne Race Course has been preliminarily approved to become its next casino. The Illinois Gaming Board recently voted unanimously that Hawthorne’s ownership and key personnel are “suitable” for eventual casino licensure.

Founded in 1891, Hawthorne is the longest running legal gambling business in the state and is Illinois’ oldest sporting venue.

In becoming a fully operational casino featuring slot machines, table games and sports betting, Hawthorne will transform Illinois horseracing.

“It’s really hard to put into context what this means for the very hardworking people of the Illinois racing industry,” said Tim Carey, president and CEO of the 4th generation family-owned business.

“It means horsemen will be able to keep their businesses and families in Illinois. It means showcasing this historic sport to a new generation of fans. It means creating a truly unique, first-of-its-kind entertainment experience that won’t exist anywhere else in Illinois.”

In addition to slot machines and table games, Hawthorne’s casino plans include a state-of-the-art sportsbook to be developed in partnership with PointsBet; dining amenities showcasing well-known Chicago culinary experiences; a multi-level parking garage; and a new racing

operation with upgraded wagering facilities. Major construction and renovation is expected to begin in September with plans for the casino to open in late 2021.

“I think a lot of people may have expected us to simply put some slot machines and tables into our

existing facility, but we’re going to substantially raise the bar on the Chicagoland casino experience,” said Kevin Kline, Hawthorne’s CEO of Gaming. “As an independent operator, Hawthorne is like a 130 year old start-up business, and we are going to lead with innovation, excitement and a culture that celebrates our customers and empowers our team members every day.
