2 NEWS briefly CITY OF CHICAGO SUES DEBT RESOLUTION FIRMS FOR EXPLOITING CONSUMERS WITH FAKE PROMISES TO SETTLE THEIR DEBT CHICAGO – The City of Chicago announced it has filed a civil complaint in the Circuit Court of Cook County against Monarch Legal, Strategic Financial Solutions, and Timothy Burnette, the head of Monarch Legal, for running a fraudulent debt resolution scheme that preys on hardworking Chicagoans struggling to pay off debt.

The Defendants portray themselves as a legitimate business that negotiates with creditors to resolve consumer debt for less than the amount owed and defends consumers from creditor lawsuits. But instead, Defendants engaged in unfair and deceptive business practices such as deploying misleading marketing tactics, collecting exorbitant up-front and monthly fees, and refusing to provide the legal services that consumers pay for. The City is seeking injunctive, monetary, and equitable relief for violations of the Municipal Code.

The City’s complaint alleges the Defendants lure consumers into their debt resolution program by making false promises about their refund policy, misrepresenting the amount of money consumers will save in the program, and tricking consumers into believing that attorneys will negotiate their settlements when that work is actually performed by non-lawyer contractors. In addition, consumers told the City that Defendants refused to represent them in court when sued by a creditor, leaving consumers who had paid for legal services to defend themselves in court.

The lawsuit claims the Defendants violate and continue to violate consumer protection laws and is asking the court to stop the Defendants from engaging in debt resolution activity in the City and assess fines for violations of the Chicago Municipal Code.

The City is represented in this lawsuit by in-house counsel from the Affirmative Litigation Division in its Department of Law. If any Chicago resident wishes to inform the City about their experience with Monarch Legal or other debt resolution programs, email consumerprotection@cityofchicago.org.

2022 CREAM OF THE CROP PHOTO CONTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCED SPRINGFIELD – Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs announced the winners of the 2022 Cream of the Crop Photo Contest, which encourages young photographers to share their vision of agriculture in our state.

Students who participated submitted up to two photos, and a panel of judges selected the winning entries.

The contest consisted of three age categories — ages 8-10, 11-14 and 15-18. Top winners were awarded Bright Start scholarship funds, with first-place winners in each age category receiving $1,000, second-place winners receiving $500, and third-place winners receiving $250. The winning students were permitted to receive one scholarship award.

The Cream of the Crop Photo Contest is part of the Ag Invest program in the treasurer’s office.

Ag Invest is one of the nation’s largest agricultural linked deposit programs, and it helps hundreds of Illinois farmers and agriculture professionals.

Through Ag Invest, the treasurer’s office partners with eligible financial institutions to offer farmers and ag businesses annual and long-term low-interest loans that can be used for operating costs, equipment purchases, construction-related expenses, and livestock purchases.

Simmons is one of five student leaders who are participating in the Bank of America Student Leaders program. The eightweek paid internship program is a way for students to obtain leadership experience, develop skills and do community service.

During the program, the students also receive personal finance skills through Bank of America’s financial wellness and education platform, Better Money Habits. With Better Money Habits, students learn how to budget and save money, save for necessities, as well as how to pay for college.

This year, the five student leaders in Chicago worked with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago. As part of the program, the leaders will participate in a virtual Leadership Summit, which will give them the opportunity to engage with elected officials, as well as leaders in human and civil rights.

The Bank of America Student Leaders program has been around since 2004 and 300 student leaders have participated in the program. Throughout the course of the program, the students learn about how nonprofits work and the role of nonprofits in supporting and building up the communities they serve.

Simmons has been working at the Boys

and Girls Club at the Ford Heights location.

She has been working with the children at the club -- planning activities for them, taking field trips, as well as interacting with the community. Simmons described her experience as amazing.

Students chosen for the program are involved in their community. In first time calls with students, Wagner has heard the change in the students from the start of their internship to the end of the program.

Simmons will attend Tennessee State University where she will study biology. She has always known she wanted to go into the medical field. She has seen what happens when there are healthcare access deserts in a community, and she wanted to serve her community by going into medicine. She ultimately wants to become a Surgeon.

CTA Launches New Building Small Businesses (BSB) Program The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), in partnership with Ascend HUB Interactive (HI), announce the official launch of the CTA Building Small Businesses (BSB) Program, an innovative resource model and initiative designed to increase local small business participation in large-scale, government capital improvement projects. The BSB Program is the latest in a series of initiatives launched by the CTA to bring equity and inclusion to all aspects of its operations.

“More than just buses and trains moving about the city, public transit is the equity equalizer for everyone, providing affordable access to jobs, schools, and vital resources – regardless of one’s background or circumstances,” said CTA President Dorval R. Carter, Jr. “The Building Small Businesses Program allows us to further extend the benefits of public transit to the communities we serve by providing the tools and resources small, minority-owned businesses need to properly and successfully compete for CTA and other large-scale contracting opportunities that are traditionally out of their reach.”

The BSB Program was developed to provide financial guidance to small businesses and other Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBEs) by offering direct loan placement and other supports so they can demonstrate the up-front capital needed to compete on large-scale transportation construction and capital programs.

For some small businesses, working on a large construction project requires resources that many firms don’t have, including

cash flow that can allow them to purchase materials ahead of being reimbursed, access to loans and other forms of credit, insurance for larger jobs, and access to IT and administrative supports. Without these tools, it can be impossible for many Chicago area small businesses to participate in construction projects.

The BSB Program was officially launched at a networking and informational event on Thursday, July 21, where more than 60 local firms attended to learn about the BSB Program and also hear from invited guest speakers including, Nuria Fernandez the Administrator of the Federal Transit Administration, and Shelby Scales the Director of the Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization at the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Piloted in 2019 under the Red and Purple Modernization program Phase One, the BSB Program proved to be quite successful, with more than 100 Chicago area small businesses having participated in the program, of which 20 received $5.6 million in financing, which is vital for building the capacity to be ready to bid for sub-contract work on CTA projects, including becoming loanready to build their business.

The program consists of free capacity-building workshops for small businesses that are certified as Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBE) or that are interested in becoming DBE-certified.

FOSTER, OBERNOLTE BIPARTISAN DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY ACCOUNTABILITY BILL PASSES HOUSE The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation introduced by Chairman Bill Foster (D-IL) and Ranking Member Jay Obernolte (R-CA) of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee Subcommittee on Investigations and Oversight. The bipartisan Cost-Share Accountability Act of 2022 would bolster the Department of Energy’s accountability to Congress and the public when awarding funding grants.

While most Department of Energy projects require cost-sharing by their grant recipients, these requirements can be reduced or even eliminated in certain instances. This legislation would increase accountability by requiring the department to make public and submit to Congress quarterly reports on the use of its authority to modify or bypass the statutory cost-sharing requirement.

“For Congress to fulfill our oversight responsibilities, we must be able to access information on how our departments and agencies are operating,” said Foster. “Cost-sharing requirements help protect the use of federal funds at the Department of Energy. As the department continues their next-generation research and development, it’s critical Congress understands how cost-sharing is implemented in support of their projects.”

Who would have expected the movies to be right in predicting the future? We have drones delivering packages, trains that practically fly, and cars that can drive themselves. Electric vehicles are one of the technological advancements that were also predicted in fiction. However, the features these cars have are things not usually seen in films, television, or books.

Electric cars have always been viewed as luxury cars. The negative connotation behind luxury is that it is expensive.

However, Chevy has been doing work to create electric vehicles that the average person can afford while also encompassing futuristic features that are found in luxury vehicles.

Chevy’s Bolt (EUV) electric utility vehicle is an amazingly crafted electric vehicle. With a sleek outer body and a luxurious feel inside and out, it comes in seven different stylish colors.

The Bolt EUV, like all of Chevy’s electric cars, while being luxurious, is still very affordable. This comes as a surprise, seeing how many cool features the car has.

I had the opportunity to experience the many features of the Chevy’s EUV Bolt for a week. I can say this car is amazing.

Aside from already being cool because

it is an electric vehicle, it runs smooth. The car I usually drive is so loud that I can hear nearly everything under the hood. With the EUV Bolt, I hear absolutely nothing. A pen could drop on the carpet of the car, and I’d hear it.

Not to mention a host great features; the car has 200 horsepower and wireless phone compatibility. The stand-out feature for me is the EUV Bolt’s super cruise feature. The Super cruise feature is an advanced driver assistance technology that allows drivers to drive hands-free. It is a feature that you would not expect in such an affordable car.

The Super cruise feature uses advanced technology to not only drive the EUV Bolt but do it safely across 200,000 compatible roads in the United States. Super cruise uses Connected Services * and uses real-time precise positioning cameras, sensors, and LiDAR map data to help detect curves, helping to make long drives and commutes comfortable.

The Super cruise has a sub-feature called adaptive cruise control. Adaptive cruise control uses state-of-the-art technology to automatically maintain a driver-selected distance from the detected vehicle you’re following.

Another amazing thing about Super cruise is that it is very easy to use. First, engage the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

by using the steering wheel button. When Adaptive Cruise Control is already set, the symbol on the dashboard will be green with a speed shown.

Another sub-feature of Super cruise is the Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking. This feature is a safeguard for when other drivers are not being responsible. The Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking uses radar to help you avoid or reduce the severity of a front-end collision.

The Super cruise also has lane centering.

The Lane-Centering Detection features detects curves with real-time cameras, sensors, and GPS. When Super Cruise detects you are on a compatible road, paying sufficient attention, and all other driving conditions are met, then a white Super Cruise symbol will display on the dashboard.

When it is safe to do so, press the Super Cruise button on the steering wheel to engage the feature. Once the steering wheel light bar turns green, you may remove your hands from the steering wheel.

To turn off Super Cruise, press the Super Cruise button again, press the brake pedal or pull the Regen on Demand paddle.

BRONZEVILLE JAZZ FEST WILL TAKE PLACE AUG. 6 CHICAGO – On Saturday, Aug. 6, Martin Luther King Drive from 39th to 37th will be alive with music during the Bronzeville Neighborhood Jazz Fest. New Black-focused Social Prescribing Project aims to improve health in Black communities TORONTO, CNW - The Black Health Committee, a committee of the Alliance for Healthier Communities in Ontario, is launching a new Black-focused Social Prescribing Project. The project will take a holistic approach to improve the health of people in Black communities.

In Canada and in Ontario, anti-Black racism is entrenched in societal systems and structures and impacts access for millions of Black people to education, housing, employment, healthcare and other resources.

The COVID-19 pandemic amplified existing disparities for Black communities; those impacts have been disproportionately felt by Black and racialized communities. A July 2020 study found that Black and racialized people make up 83% of COVID-19 cases reported in Ontario.

Social prescribing is an approach to healthcare that can bridge gaps between social and clinical models of health.

Using the trusted process of writing a prescription, social prescribing allows health providers to refer patients to

community-based programs that are co-created according to each client’s interests, goals, and gifts. In Ontario, Community Health Centres (CHCs) and other community-based primary health care organizations offer inter-professional and community services as part of their models of care, as they have for decades.

The goal of the Black Social Prescribing project is to develop a model of social prescribing grounded in Black and Afrocentric values and principles, and an approach that focuses on supporting Black families and children in Ontario.

“As a Community Health Centre focused on improving the health and wellbeing of Black communities in the Greater Toronto Area, we are excited to participate in the Black Social Prescribing Project as an essential model of integrated service that will be culturally affirming and based on the lived experiences of Black communities for improving their health and wellbeing,” said Liben Gebremikael, Executive Director at TAIBU Community Health Centre, who also

serves as Chair of the Board of the Alliance for Healthier Communities.

The majority of CHCs involved in the project are Black-led and offer clinical services, physiotherapy, counselling, mental health and addictions support, diabetes management and more. Through these community-governed primary health care organizations and their providers, the Black Social Prescribing project aims to address social determinants of health, such as food security, income security, education and social connections.

The Alliance for Healthier Communities previously piloted social prescribing initiatives across 11 community health centres in Ontario, representing a diversity of urban, rural, northern, and francophone communities. The results were very promising, with clients reporting 49% decrease in sense of loneliness, 19% increase in involvement in social activities, 12% increase in self-reported sense of mental health, and increased sense of belonging.

The Black Social Prescribing Project, which is funded by the Balsam Foundation, will be implemented over the next two and a half years in four CHCs: Somerset West CHC in Ottawa, as well as Rexdale CHC, TAIBU CHC and Black Creek CHC, all located in Toronto.
