DURBIN HONORS JUSTICE JOHN PAUL STEVENS ON SENATE FLOOR In a speech on the Senate floor, U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, recently honored the life of Justice John Paul Stevens who passed away on July 16 at the age of 99. Justice Stevens served on the Supreme Court for nearly 35 years.

Justice Stevens was born and raised in Chicago. He attended the University of Chicago and Northwestern Law School, where he graduated at the top of his class. In between, he served as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star. He practiced law in Chicago and served on the Chicago-based U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit prior to his 1975 appointment to the Supreme Court, according to a press release.

During a recent press conference, the Urban Growers Collective, Heartland Alliance’s READI Chicago Program, and the Mayor of Chicago, Lori Lightfoot, all came together to announce the launch of Grounds for Peace, a vacant lot beautification pilot program.

Through Grounds for Peace, 50 city-owned vacant lots in North Lawndale, Woodlawn, and Englewood will be transformed through new landscaping.

In addition to providing neighborhood beautification, the pilot program will offer skill-oriented job training and development experience for 50 READI Chicago employees who will be responsible for executing the landscaping and maintenance of these vacant lots on the south and west sides of Chicago, according to information provided by the Chicago Mayor’s Office.

“Today, we’re bringing life and opportunities back into community spaces that have been left empty for decades,” said Mayor Lightfoot.

“Transforming our vacant lots into beautiful,

open green spaces not only fosters safer streets and stronger communities but also contributes to a cleaner and healthier Chicago.”

Heartland Alliance, an anti-poverty organization based in Chicago, created READI Chicago as a response to gun violence and through this program the organization provides therapy, jobs, and support services to men in Chicago who come from communities that have been highly impacted by gun violence.

“The READI Chicago team is thrilled to be part of this exciting program, and we look forward to actively contributing to these beautification efforts to help make our neighborhoods safe and welcoming,” said Eddie Bocanegra, senior director of READI Chicago.

“It’s experiences like this that engage READI Chicago participants in meaningful ways [which] will help make a positive impact in our communities.”

The Urban Growers Collective is another partner on this project and they will be providing a lot of the agriculture and landscape training for this pilot program. Co-founder of Urban Grower Collective, Laurell Sims, said that being part of the Grounds for Peace project

is a “dream come true” for their organization.

“We really wanted to expand into adult job training but we knew that was not necessarily our skill set. We love teaching people how to farm and we’re very good at it but we don’t have access to the therapeutic skills and the nitty gritty job training resources that a larger organization who specializes in that, like Heartland Alliance, would have. To be able to combine what Heartland Alliance is great at and what we’re great at and then bring that to the table for these men in need is really critical,” said Sims.

Urban Growers Collective and Heartland Alliance have been working together for about a year and a half to create an agriculture job training program and Sims said she was thrilled when the City of Chicago approached them to expand the program and launch the Grounds for Peace pilot program.

“We are taking 50 lots in three different neighborhoods and using them as a test case to see the impact this can have on [a] community,” said Sims. “We can’t grow food on these lots because of the soil quality so we want to grow something that’s really beautiful.”

City College Partners With Community Organization To Host Summer Job Training

Richard J. Daley College has partnered with the Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN) to host the Weekend Warriors program where young men can earn a basic certificate in industrial welding and nine college credits by attending classes Friday, Saturday, and Sunday during the summer.

The Weekend Warriors program is part of IMAN’s Green ReEntry program which provides transitional housing, life skills education, and sustainable job training for citizens returning from incarceration and high-risk youth in Chicago, according to information provided by IMAN. “We worked with the IMAN organization to put together a creative schedule that would allow them to utilize our new advanced manufacturing facilities to provide welding training for a group of at-risk youth,” said David Girzadas, dean of the Advanced Manufacturing Program at Daley College.

The students who are participating in the Weekend Warriors program take 12-weeks of classes at Daley College that include a college success class, an introduction to welding class, and an intermediate welding class. When they are finished with the summer program, they will have the option of continuing their education at Daley College if they choose.

“We are here to serve the needs of the community, as well as our students and we have a great resource that we want to utilize in every way possible. When we had the opportunity to work with IMAN we thought it fit in perfectly with City College’s objectives to introduce students to college and get them started on reaching their goals and dreams and their potential,” said Girzadas.

Aside from the college-level training, participants also receive career and job placement services, behavioral health therapy, individual case management, artistic programming, select weekend excursions, transportation support, meals, and weekly stipends, according to infor-

There are currently 12 students in the Weekend Warriors program and they are about halfway through the summer program. For the most part, the students are committing their entire weekend to take classes at Daley College with classes from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Saturday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

“IMAN has been a great partner and at first, they were very concerned about a lot of the details and support services and thinking through the schedule in addition to simply scheduling classes but we really work with them on all the details. We worked out transportation,

the times of the classes, pickup and drop off points, meals, books, and all the details that go along with being successful,” said Girzadas.

“We worked out all those details ahead of time which I think made the long effort that the students put in over the course of the weekend worth it for them.”

Class Action Settlement Involving Kiip, Inc.’s Advertising Platform Announced A settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit involving claims that Kiip, Inc. (“Kiip”) violated the law by using its advertising platform to collect, intercept, or transmit consumers’ personal information through a software application without first getting permission from those consumers. The case is called Farag et al. v. Kiip, Inc., Case No. 2019 CH 01695 (Ill. Cir. Ct. Cook Cnty.). The proposed settlement is not an admission of wrongdoing

by Kiip. Kiip strenuously denies any wrongdoing and the court has not decided who is right or wrong.

Rather, the parties have reached a

compromise to end the lawsuit and avoid the uncertainties and costs associated with further litigation.

Individuals are members of the settlement class if, between January 1, 2010 and June 13, 2019, they used a software application integrated with Kiip’s advertising platform. Members of this class may file a claim to request a share of the settlement funds.

The proposed settlement provides for a fund totaling $1,000,000, which will be used to make payments to the class members with valid claims after first making deductions for notice and administration costs, incentive awards to the class representatives,

and attorneys’ fees for class counsel.

If the court finally approves the settlement, each settlement class member who timely submits a valid claim form will be eligible to receive an equal payment from the Settlement Fund. The exact amount of each settlement class member’s payment is unknown at this time; the final amount of each payment will depend on the number of claims submitted and the amount available in the settlement fund after the deductions.

tember 11, 2019. Alternatively, class members can exclude themselves from the settlement by September 11, 2019 if they do not want to be bound by it, but will not be able to receive a payment from the fund.

Class members who file a claim or otherwise choose not to exclude themselves will release any claims they may have against Kiip, as more fully described in the Settlement Agreement, available at www.KiipSettlement.com.

Class members may also object to the settlement by September 18, 2019. The detailed notice available on the website explains how to file a

claim, exclude oneself, or object.

The Court will hold a Hearing on October 18, 2019 to consider whether to approve the settlement and a request by class counsel for attorneys’ fees of up to 40% of the Settlement Fund, plus their costs for their work in the case. The court will also consider incentive award payments in an amount up to $5,000 to the class representatives. Class members can appear at the hearing, but do not have to.
