NEWS briefly CARLTON W. LENOIR, SR., NAMED CHICAGO TEACHERS’ PENSION FUND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Carlton W. Lenoir, Sr., has been named Executive Director of the Chicago Teachers’ Pension Fund (CTPF or the Fund).

His appointment will be effective on August 2. Lenoir was the Chief Benefits Officer at Illinois Teachers’ Retirement System for the last five years. A national search was conducted by EFL Associates.

A results-oriented pension fund professional with over 32 years of executive and operational experience, Lenoir began his CTPF career as an Active Accounts Counselor and worked his way up to a management position.

He went on to hold leadership roles with public pension plans in Georgia and Illinois. His experience includes all phases of public pension fund administration, including the implementation of three enterprise-wide pension administration systems over an l8-year period.

A graduate of Whitney M. Young High School, Lenoir earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from American Intercontinental University and a J.D. from Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School.

“I have always had a desire to serve the public school system.

It is where I got my start and that played a major role in my career development. When I left CTPF in 2005, I believe it was to prepare for this opportunity,” stated Executive Director Carlton W. “Each girl has something inside of her that she can bring out, that she can manifest, and share with the world. She can blossom into her reality, her talents, and her skills, she can step in front of anybody at any time. Honestly, she can be who she is,” she said. “You can show up everywhere you are, just the way you are, and it’s fine because you’re always bringing your best.”

The girls who participate in Global Girls, Inc. are trained in the theater and dance. Penn believes that dance helps train the body, and helps develop focus, and the creativity, helps with grace.

Theater helps one to be present in the moment and think on your feet as well as it helps with communication and reading skills.

“We’re nurturing that whole child in our mission, we took a look at what

young people are going through and turned that into stories that we put on stage,” she said.

Penn said those stories are shared with other young people who get to see people who look like them, telling their stories. Global Girls goes to preschools and day care centers to perform the plays. “We are giving other children, and adults, in our community another look at the possibilities for Black girls, and guys. Although it’s Global Girls, we do work with some guys,” she said.

Penn said Global Girls has always been located on the South Side. The Global Girls Studio is located at 8151 S. South Chicago Ave. She said, she always wanted the organization to be for Black girls.

When she was teaching, she saw what was happening to Black girls and she wanted to give them that layer of confidence, to let them know they are perfect just the way they are, a springboard to go on into the world and do your thing”.

Penn is working on a first-class facility for Global Girls, Inc., she is impacting the community to show another model, another way to be, another mindset. Penn loves what she does.

Penn follows her ikigai, a Japanese concept that deals with life’s purpose and having a sense of fulfillment.

“Everyday they’re thinking about their reason for getting up in the morning, they’re thinking about something they

love, something that benefits the world, something they can make money from and something that nourishes their soul,” she said.

Since Global Girls, Inc., began there have been 70,000 girls serviced. The organizations partners with Chicago Public Schools and other community organizations to do a theater and dance program. Global Girls also travels the world. The participants have been to Ghana, Kenya, India and Grenada.

Penn said there are girls who have gone through the program and reach out to say they were in the program and still remember parts of the program.

She said there are also children in the program who are the children of girls who were in the program.

Penn said throughout the years, she has learned, what the girls need the most is unconditional love and somebody looking in their eyes and saying, “you are so wonderful, you are so beautiful, you are perfect just the way you are and I’m going to love you, until you learn to love yourself.” She added, they needed people to shut up, listen to them and be there for them.

Global Girls, Inc. is working on a showcase this summer. They are planning to travel to Tanzania in February.

ComEd Goats Take Break from Managing Vegetation to Cruise on the Chicago River OBAMA FOUNDATION’S MY BROTHER’S KEEPER ALLIANCE YOUTH MAKE DREAMS REALITY IN MONTANA Youth from the South Side of Chicago had the opportunity to make their dreams a reality over the Independence Day weekend. Five young men from the Obama Foundation’s My Brother’s Keeper Alliance joined top media company, Turner Sports, for its sports Emmy-nominated premier live golf event series, Capital One’s The Match, in Montana.

The event featured top athletes, including Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Phil Mickelson. The young men had a one-of-akind opportunity to shadow Turner experts, getting hands-on experience in public relations, photography, talent relations, and production, among other roles.

Baltacesar Salinas, one of the youth who attended the weekend event and who is involved in La Villita Basketball with New Life Centers, a MBK Alliance seed community, said “New Life Centers, and the mentorship provided through the MBK Alliance support, has provided a safe place for the youth in my community and has nourished the younger generation to become the future of tomorrow.”

My Brother’s Keeper launched in 2014 in the Obama White House to address persistent opportunity gaps facing boys and young men of color. Today, the work continues through the Obama Foundation and young men like Balatcesar.

ComEd uses goats to clear grass and brush under power lines – a safer and greener way to help keep energy reliable ComEd’s four-legged employees took a break from eating vegetation under power lines in Pekin, Ill., for a boat cruise on the Chicago River.

Twenty goats joined ComEd employees this week to take in downtown views from the river and educate customers about ComEd’s goat vegetation management program.

“ComEd was excited to bring the goats to Chicago this year to show one of our innovative and sustainable solutions to ensure reliable power for families and businesses,” said Michelle Blaise, senior vice president of technical services at ComEd. “The goats work hard to clear vegetation in hard-to-reach places, helping us to prevent power outages in an environmentally-friendly way. If anyone deserves a break, it’s them.”

The ComEd goats cruised the Chicago River between the DuSable Bridge and LaSalle Street Bridge on Wednesday, July 7, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Since 2019, ComEd has enlisted the support of more than 200 goats to help clear vegetation in Pekin, Ill., in terrain that is difficult to access. The goats’ “work” helps ComEd avoid power outages and service disruptions often caused by overgrown vegetation near power lines. Using goats cuts the cost and time required to clear the vegetation by more than half, reduces www.citizennewspapergroup.com

safety risks to workers and is an ecofriendly alternative.

The goats are on loan to ComEd from goat grazing company Goats on the Go. After clearing 13 acres of land last year, ComEd’s goats are continuing the hard work this summer through the month of July.

State to pick overdue marijuana dispensary winners by Aug. 19

More than 200 other craft growing, infusion, transportation licenses awarded

More than a year after new marijuana dispensary licenses were scheduled to be distributed per the state’s 2019 adultuse legalization law, the governor’s office announced the initial lottery and two new ones will happen by the end of August.

The state also announced the award of more than 200 other licenses for craft growing and infusing operations as well as distribution, and the governor signed into law the measure that will allow for the two new lotteries.

“In addition to signing that legislation, we’re actually issuing 200 craft grower (and other) licenses across the state and about 67 percent of those are going to people of color,” Pritzker said at a Thursday morning Chicago news conference on criminal justice reform.

“And so there will be people getting into business in the cannabis industry, nearly right away, and I’m very pleased about that.”

The newly signed bill, House Bill 1443, was an effort to jumpstart the equity measures in the 2019 law that aimed to diversify the largely white, male-dominated legal marijuana industry.

Per the initial law, 75 dispensary licenses were to have been distributed over one year ago, but of the 900-plus applicants for those licenses, only 21 achieved the perfect score necessary to be entered into the final lottery. That caused the governor’s office to pause the final lottery amid backlash from equity advocates.

That lottery will now be held Aug. 19 with all 21 finalists eligible to win licenses.

While the initial lottery allowed only

applicants that were tied for the highest score to reach the lottery, the new lotteries will instead apply to those who received 85 percent or more on their 250-point application.

The first new lottery for 55 licenses includes any firm that scored at least an 85 percent on its initial application that has not hit a 10-license limit. That lottery will be held July 29.

The second new batch of 55 licenses would be available to firms that scored 85 percent or higher that also have at least 51 percent ownership meeting social equity requirements, including living in an area impacted by the war on drugs for at least 10 years, having been arrested or convicted of a marijuana crime eligible for expungement, or being a member of a family impacted by the war on drugs.

That lottery is scheduled for Aug. 5.

“Almost all states that have legalized cannabis have done so in a way that produced a multi-billion-dollar industry dominated by a handful of corporations and individuals that lack diversity.

But Illinois is attempting to produce a cannabis industry that actually looks like Illinois,” Toi Hutchinson, Pritzker’s marijuana advisor, said in a news release.

“What we’re attempting to accomplish is hard to do and takes time to accomplish, but we have an obligation to ensure that it gets as strong a start as possible.”

The lotteries for all marijuana-related licenses will be managed by the Illinois Lottery and drawn by a randomized computer process.

The governor’s office also announced Thursday that the Illinois Department of Agriculture has reached out to 213 winners of other marijuana-related licenses.

Those include 40 craft grow licenses – a grow operation with a smaller footprint

than the massive cultivation centers – as well as 32 licenses for infusing other products such as foods or oils with marijuana and another 141 licenses to transport marijuana products.

While applicants for those licenses were not required to report their gender or race information to the state, the governor’s office said 80 percent of the applicants “self-reported” their demographic information, and 98 applicants reported being Black-owned, 19 Latino and 34 Black woman-owned.

Upon acceptance of the licenses and payment of fees, the winners will be made public.

The original legalization law also allowed up to eight community colleges in the state to receive licenses to develop a curriculum to train students in marijuana related fields. The new law signed Thursday removes that cap.

The state announced Kishwaukee College, Oakton College, Olive-Harvey College, Shawnee Community College, Southwestern Illinois College, Triton College and Wilbur Wright College will receive the initial licenses, but more will eventually be announced.

The state’s Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity also has partnered with two private lenders to create a loan program for social equity applicants that makes available up to $100,000 for a transporter license applicant, $500,000 for a dispensing organization or infuser and $1 million for a cultivator. Information can be found on DCEO’s website.

Metra enhances customer communication with onboard satisfaction survey Metra is launching an ongoing survey that will be used to measure and track month-to-month customer satisfaction and solicit feedback about a variety of topics, the agency announced today. Signs containing links to the survey are currently being posted on trains.

“This is another big step in our transformation to be My Metra for everyone,” said Metra CEO/ Executive Director Jim Derwinski. “This new survey will allow us to open a new dialogue with our customers and receive continuous input from them about their riding

experiences –everything from understanding their level of satisfaction to identifying any unmet wants and needs. This is all about a process of continuous improvement.”

Signs with QR codes that link riders to the survey are being placed throughout Metra railcars. The survey

will take no more than 3 minutes to complete.

The survey will ask riders about their overall satisfaction as well as their satisfaction with specific aspects of the service, such as on-time performance, cleanliness, communications, and interactions with employees.

Hunter congratulates Phillips Academy for receiving STEM Grant State Senator Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago) is congratulating Phillips Academy for being awarded a grant to support hands-on, interdisciplinary STEM-based curriculum that prepares students for life beyond the classroom.

“Phillips Academy could not be more deserving of this award,” Hunter said. “I am so proud of all the students and faculty who have worked hard during the pandemic, and I am excited for the opportunities this grant will provide.”

Thanks to the grant, Phillips Academy High School, which falls in the 3rd District, will be able to offer a new Project Lead The Way Engineering Program. The program will help students build knowledge and skills in engineering while helping them develop essential skills such as problem solving and critical thinking.

The opportunity is made possible through a partnership between Ardagh Group, a global supplier of infinitely recyclable metal and glass consumer packaging, and PLTW, a nonprofit organization that offers transformative classroom and learning experiences for PreK-12 students.

Leo Burnett Pilots Creative Boot Camp at Chicago State University In partnership with Marcus Graham Project, creative executives forge a fresh pathway for underrepresented talent; enrolled students secure internships within Publicis Groupe Five students from Chicago State University, Illinois’ sole four-year Predominantly Black Institution for higher education, began summer internships this week across Publicis Groupe, including at Leo Burnett Chicago, Arc Worldwide, and ThePub; and one of their classmates has accepted a full-time position at Publicis Health Media. The connection is the culmination of a decades-long partnership, and pro bono work through the Pencil Project, most recently with a boot camp creative curriculum during the Spring semester, with support from Marcus Graham Project.

“This boot camp provided

a proxy of what it’s like to work at an ad agency – not just land the job,” explains Aki Spicer, Chief Strategy Officer for Leo Burnett.

“We’ve made great strides with recruitment, but retention of diverse talent requires industry role models.”

NATIONAL NEWS Howard University Raises Over $3 Million for Golf Program Endowment During Bison at the Beach Inaugural Golf Classic Fundraiser NBA champion Stephen Curry Joins Howard University Division I golf teams for Inaugural Golf Classic in Pebble Beach, California Washington – Howard University recently hosted the Bison at the Beach Inaugural Golf Classic, a first-of-its-kind golf classic and fundraising event for the Howard University golf program. NBA champion Stephen Curry joined members of the golf team, Howard alumni, members of the Board of Trustees, corporate sponsors and friends of the University for the two-day event that raised over $3 million in support of the golf program’s endowment.

The Howard University golf program made its debut in the 2020-2021 academic year with Curry’s support. American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten Reacts to Latest CDC Guidance for Schools Washington—In response to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s updated COVID-19 guidance for schools, AFT President Randi Weingarten issued the following statement: “Today’s guidance is grounded in both science and common sense.

It takes what we’ve learned about COVID transmission in the last few months—from in-school learning, camps and the efficacy of vaccines— and charts a course for schools to fully reopen this fall.

“The guidance confirms two truths: that students learn better in the classroom, and that vaccines remain our best bet to stop the spread of this virus and get our kids and educators fully back to those classrooms for in-person learning. It also makes clear that masking is important in the absence of vaccination. For educators across the country, this guidance sets a floor, not a ceiling; it builds on the evidence we have about COVID transmission and reminds us that we must remain com-

mitted to other mitigation strategies so every school building is safe and welcoming for all, including those who are still too young to be vaccinated and those who cannot be. Thousands Of Dollars Awarded To Black Males For Achieving Academic Excellence Chicago Organization Awards Scholarships To Twenty-Two Black Males Impacted By Gun Violence The Ezekiel Taylor Scholarship Foundation (ETSF) is awarding scholarships to 22 African-American young men, Sunday, July 25, 2021. The ‘Yet, Still We Rise’ Scholarship Fundraiser, Gala and Silent Auction will highlight the academic achievements and success of young black males in the Chicago area.

The event honors the legacy of Ezekiel Taylor who was robbed, and killed on Chicago’s Southside in the early 80s. The gala, usually an in-person affair, is virtual again due to the Covid pandemic. “The pandemic has forced our students to survive, thrive and think outside of the box, and it has also caused our foundation to become more innovative and creative,” says Tenisha Taylor, daughter of Ezekiel Taylor and ETSF CEO. “These young men have survived a tumultuous year. From the public health crisis, to the cloud of Black

on Black crime, to the Black Lives Matter movement, young Black men are traumatized on every level. Despite the negative news and societal constraints, we are celebrating the achievements and academic success of young men who are making positive life choices”, adds the former CNN Executive Producer.

‘Yet, Still We Rise’ is a one-hour production that celebrates the 2021 scholarship winners, and highlights their achievements. “You can’t be what you can’t see,” says Dennis Banks, annual donor and owner of C.F.K. Foods, Inc. “This foundation brings sight to these young men. ETSF places energy around a population in our community that is at risk, our young black males are vulnerable and this organization gives them comfort food. By pouring into them, they succeed, and it changes the trajectory of their lives.”

ETSF celebrates its 5th year of operation. To date, it has awarded more $100,000 in college scholarships from a grass roots level. “This is an amazing foundation. I appreciate everything ETSF does in the community and I’m happy to be a part of it,” says Kyle Santillian, Radio Host WGCI-FM 107.5.

Besides financial support, the foundation conducts quarterly life skill programs for high school and college students. It also boasts a one-on-one mentoring program. “This will be my 4th year in the ETSF program and they are my family,” says Ezekiel Stevens, Morehouse College rising senior. “The organization does more than write checks, it supports my dreams, goals. Whenever I call to talk to a mentor or Ms. Taylor about life situations, they always come through for me.”

COVID ‘Surge Teams’ May Be Coming To Your Town Black PR Wire - The White House is readying COVID-19 “surge teams” to send to communities with low vaccination rates to help combat the rapidly spreading Delta variant of the coronavirus, officials announced Thursday.

The teams will work with local public health authorities to conduct contact tracing and will distribute supplies as needed or requested by states, such as therapeutics and additional tests. The teams will also help augment staffing at local vaccination sites.

The Biden administration plans to deploy “surge response” teams to some states, including Missouri, in response to rising COVID-19 cases across various parts of the country.

Nevada and Missouri have had the highest rates of COVID-19 infection in recent weeks, and there have been recent outbreaks in Utah, Nebraska, and Wyoming, as well.

According to the Kansas City Star and multiple media reports, Missouri has requested aid from the White House, which announced

the newly-formed federal “surge response” teams on Thursday.

Teams will be deployed to several states where the COVID-19 Delta

variant presents risks to unvaccinated Americans. In a recent report, the CDC says the highest proportion of Delta variant was

detected in southwest Missouri, which accounted for nearly twothirds of all Delta variants identified in the state.

The teams are designed to “surge additional testing into communities to expand detection of the virus and allow public health authorities to do contact tracing to help contain outbreaks,” according to an announcement from the White House.

State data shows that 44.6% of residents have received at least one shot, far short of the 54.7% rate nationally. In more than 60 Missouri counties, less than 30% of the population had received their first shot, according to state data.

Arkansas has less than 35% of residents fully vaccinated as of Sunday, and the state averaged 16 new cases per 100,000 residents every day over the past week, according to Johns Hopkins. That’s about five times the nationwide rate of new cases.

The surge teams will work with public health department officials to conduct contact tracing. They will also distribute supplies such as therapeutics or COVID-19 tests and bolster staffing levels at vaccination sites.

Local Faith Based Organization Continues Its Mission Of Making A Difference In Young Boys Life’s Through Mentorship Program And Family Fun Activities Concerned Christian Men Organization Holds A Breakfast Gathering Monthly Featuring Local Notable Speakers

George West understands firsthand the impact an organization can have on someone’s life. At seven-years-old, his mother introduced him to the Concerned Christian Men, a faith-based, non profit organization that mentors young boys starting from third grade. He participated in the program through high school and volunteered in his 20s, growing in faith and knowledge and truly feeding his mind, body and spirit.

“This organization has meant so much to me as it prepared me to be a man of character and excellence,” said West, executive director for Concerned Christian Men. Concerned Christian Men will host a Family Day from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, July 24 at its headquarters, 901 E. 95th Street, in Chicago. The event features board and video games, Instagram Reel competition, virtual games, basketball and fitness challenges along with information about the organization. It’s an event the organization views as important in the light of violence and division that has hit the city this summer.

“Even though we focus on mentoring and helping young boys and men, we believed it was important to have an event that brings the community and families together,” said Ernst Lamothe Jr, program manager for Concerned Christian Men. An added bonus is that young men from third grade through high school will be rewarded for academic excellence when they bring their report cards. The organization will pay elementary and middle school students $1 for every A and $2 for every A in science and math. High school men will earn $5 for every A. Students must not have any D's or F’s to receive the payment. George D. Glenn, who passed away in February, was one of the founding members; growing and shepherding the organization for more than 15 years. The organization focuses on helping boys navigate into manhood learning to keep a strong and steady pace while traversing through difficult times. The Concerned Christian Men’s centerpiece program is its monthly Man-Boy Breakfast during which some of Chicago’s most notable men have participated as speakers. Among them include former 44th United States President Barack Obama, McDonalds USA President Don Thompson, former Bears coach Lovie Smith and other prominent men.

Organization officials want to continue Glenn’s legacy and understand how much more work needs to be done.

“I think the value of the program is that we do teach the word of God and we show the young men love and support,” said Ray Dozier, associate director for Concerned Christian Men. “We show them strong male figures and give them a roadmap on how to be successful. The program is just as relevant today as it was in the past.”

Redbox Entertainment Acquires Exclusive Domestic Rights To Nick Cannon’s ‘SHE BALL’ The Multihyphenate Wrote, Directed, Produced and Stars in the Sports Comedy Available in Theaters and On Demand August 6 PRNewswire - Los Angeles -- Redbox Entertainment has acquired the North American distribution rights to SHE BALL, a feature written, produced, and directed by Nick Cannon. The film will be released simultaneously in theaters and widely available On Demand including Redbox on August 6.

SHE BALL follows the love of basketball through the struggles of Avery Watts (Cannon), who enlists the help of a women’s streetball league to help him save the embattled Inglewood Community Center he manages, all while trying to raise his seven-year-old daughter.

Redbox Entertainment is releasing “She Ball” directed by and staring Nick Cannon on August 6 in theaters and On Demand.
