CHICAGO – The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) joined hospitality and business leaders from Choose Chicago, the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, the Illinois Hotel & Lodging Association, Oxford Hotels and Resorts and LondonHouse Chicago on Wednesday, July 13, to discuss reigniting travel and tourism to the Chicago area.

Due to pandemic-related travel reductions in 2020 and 2021, Illinois and Chicago hotels lost more than $5.4 billion in room revenue, resulting in a drop of more than $1 billion in state and local tax revenue.

Travel is booming this summer, however, with nearly seven in ten Americans (69%) planning to travel this summer and 60% saying they are likely to take more vacations this year compared to 2020-21, according to a recent survey conducted by Morning Consult and commissioned by AHLA. Another national survey shows that 77% of business travelers say it is more important than ever to bring back business travel. The same survey showed nearly two-thirds of business travelers said increased reliance on virtual work during the pandemic negatively impacted both productivity (64%) and workplace culture (65%).

Speakers at the event discussed recent data and opinion research underscoring optimism for reigniting travel to the Chicago region as well as new travel trends and opportunities to attract more travelers to the area.

The Wednesday, July 13, event is one in a series of “Reigniting Travel” events AHLA is hosting in major cities across the nation in conjunction with its Hospitality is Working campaign.

GOVERNOR PRITZKER APPOINTS HEALTH POLICY EXPERT DR. SAMEER VOHRA TO LEAD ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH

SPRINGFIELD — Governor JB Pritzker has appointed Dr. Sameer Vohra, a distinguished pediatrician and healthcare policy expert, to lead the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) beginning August 1. Dr. Vohra, the Founding Chair of the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine’s (SIU-SOM) Department of Population Science and Policy, follows Dr. Ngozi Ezike, who stepped down in March after leading IDPH and the State of Illinois through the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Vohra is a general pediatrician who holds degrees in law and public policy. He is a cross-disciplinary leader in state and national health policy formulation, and his recent focus has been on improving health outcomes in Central and Southern Illinois. An Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Public Health, Medical Humanities, and Law at SIU-SOM, he currently serves the State of Illinois as the Interim Chair of the Children’s Mental Health Partnership.

He completed a residency in pediatrics at the University of Chicago and earned a Master of Arts in public policy from the University of Chicago. He holds a medical doctorate from SIU-SOM; a juris doctorate from SIU School of Law graduating first in his class; and a Bachelor of Arts in political science and science in human culture with honors from Northwestern University.

Dr. Vohra also serves on IDPH’s Illinois State Board of Health, the Illinois Medicaid Advisory Committee, the Governor’s Rural Affairs Council, and recently completed a term on the Illinois COVID-19 Response Fund Steering Committee. He has previously served on national committees for the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Association of American Medical Colleges, and the American Medical Association, and on the Board of Trustees for the Illinois State Medical Society and Chicago Medical Society.

CEO makes case for financial education for young people Continued from page 1

Looby, the CEO and President of Maryland Bankers Association, was introduced to the world of finance through the stock market game. He is the first African American to hold those titles with that organization.

Looby started in governmental affairs and external affairs. His job at the United States Chamber of Commerce gave him the opportunity to work on issues surrounding business and finance. From there, he joined the Consumer Data Industry Association. There, he got a chance to sink his teeth into the finance industry.

“Credit reporting agencies really help to facilitate the financing of things, the risk management of things, how things go in the economy,” he said. Looby had an opportunity to work with people from different states and different countries at CDIA. He was also exposed to the World’s Consumer Credit Reporting Conference -government agencies, companies and other stakeholders who came together to learn and talk about what was important in credit reporting. It wasn’t something Looby had ever done before. Then, he went to work at Bank of America, dealing with wealth management, securities business and consumer and commercial banking. Looby has had the opportunity to leverage what he learned.

Looby has been focused on bringing diversity into the finance and banking industry. He believes there are multiple things that need to happen to bring about diversity in finance and banking. He has been partnering with Historically Black Colleges and Universities to figure out ways to improve talent pipelines. At Coppin

State University, Looby is focusing in on the need to partner with member institutions to provide financial education to the students there.

Earlier this year, Looby and the Maryland Bankers Association, along with the Maryland Council of Economic Education, wrote an op-ed for the Washington Post that talked about the importance of financial education in public schools in Maryland. Looby believes that creating a curriculum of financial education for public schools can work, not just in Maryland, but nationwide.

“The return on this investment is a lifetime of being better informed, better positioned, being able to really have the discernment and necessary skills to think about how you want to achieve your financial goals. We know that better educated consumers make better decisions that have a real lasting impact,” he said.

To Looby, financial literacy is having enough knowledge to make good choices on varying items in the marketplace and leverage it to make a decision that will have a positive impact years later. Part of financial education is understanding the issues around financial fraud.

In the op ed, there was a part that talked about the consequences of financial illiteracy – not sticking to a budget, or taking out credit cards, can lead to bad credit.

“I am focused on ensuring there are more opportunities for folks who come from communities like mine to reach leadership opportunities in the sector and to have better exposure to what those careers are. We are making sure that our banks and our bankers are supported in this time of recovery,” he said.

U.S. Department of Education Awards Final $198 Million of American Rescue Plan Higher Education Funds to Support Students at Community Colleges, Rural, and Minority-Serving Institutions On Wednesday, July 13, the U.S. Department of Education (Department) awarded the final $198 million in Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) grants. The grants will assist students who attend 244 colleges and universities and provides resources to help these institutions recover from the impacts of the pandemic. The American Rescue Plan, signed by President Biden in March 2021, provided almost $40 billion in relief funds to colleges and universities, directly helping thousands of students impacted by the pandemic.

The grants have been awarded to public and private non-profit colleges and universities that have the greatest unmet needs, including community colleges and rural institutions that serve a high percentage of diverse student populations and low-income students, and those that have

experienced enrollment declines since the start of the pandemic, among other categories.

Of the funds awarded today, almost 90 percent will go toward Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), community colleges, rural institutions, and institutions serving large populations of low-income students. The majority of institutions are also required to distribute roughly half of all grant funds directly to students with the greatest need, which helps provide additional support for housing, tuition support, addressing food insecurity, and other basic needs.

“The institutions that serve our highest-need students were not only hit hard by the pandemic, but in many cases have also struggled with chronic underinvestment and funding inequities,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona.

“This funding from the American Rescue Plan will help HBCUs, MSIs, community colleges, and other inclusive institutions better support their students, from investing in campus mental health, to providing financial relief, to meeting housing, transportation, and child care needs. When we invest in stronger supports for our students, we help remove barriers to their success so that they can stay on track with their studies, complete their degrees, and ultimately, build rewarding careers.”

As part of the announcement, Secretary Miguel Cardona, First Lady Jill Biden,

and American Rescue Plan Coordinator Gene Sperling will join leadership from the Community College of Philadelphia, Coahoma Community College, and Southwestern Michigan College for a press call to highlight the positive impacts these grants have had on their students and institutions. These colleges have spent funds reducing or eliminating tuition, eliminating outstanding student balances, addressing food insecurity by supporting a food pantry, creating a zero-cost textbook program, and covering costs of evidence-based practices to monitor and suppress the spread of Covid-19.

The Biden-Harris Administration has made unprecedented investments through ARP in many of our nation’s historic or under-resourced institutions that educate students whose communities were most acutely affected by the pandemic. These investments include more than $10 billion to community colleges, over $2.6 billion to HBCUs, approximately $190 million to TCUs, and more than $13 billion to MSIs such as Hispanic-Serving Institutions and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions. ARP funds more than doubled the higher education grants that were made available under previous pandemic relief bills.

Illinois Poison Center Warns Public of Fake Prescription Pills, Drug Substitutions as Fentanyl Use Rises CHICAGO – Now that summer is in full swing with concerts, music festivals and sporting events, the Illinois Poison Center (IPC) is warning the public to stay safe by avoiding recreational drugs, especially synthetic recreational drugs. In June, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) reported multiple fatal and non-fatal overdose clusters in several Northern Illinois counties related to heroin, cocaine, and fentanyl.

“We are seeing a significant spike of overdose cases across the nation due to synthetic drugs,” said IPC Medical Director, Michael Wahl, M.D. “Illegal drug manufacturers are mixing fentanyl with cocaine, methamphetamines, ecstasy and other known ‘party drugs’ and selling the product at parties, festivals and special events.

Experimenting with street drugs can be fatal and that first time could be your last.”

According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), drug traffickers are using fake pills to exploit the opioid crisis and prescription drug misuse in the United States, bringing overdose deaths and violence to communities nationwide. Since fentanyl is cheap and easy to produce, illicit drug manufacturers often mix it into counterfeit oxycodone (brand names: Percocet® and OxyContin®), alprazolam (brand name: Xanax®) and Adderall® — substances

popular with young adults and teenagers.

“Taking prescription drugs for recreational purposes, especially those provided by someone other than your physician or pharmacist, can be a deadly decision,” says IPC Assistant Vice President Carol DesLauriers, PharmD. “Fake pills are being deliberately laced with synthetic opioids like fentanyl and sold to people across the country, which has proved to cause life-threatening symptoms. These drugs are dangerous and addictive and not worth the risk.”

Here are IPC’s safety recommendations: Do not take prescription drugs not provided by your physician, pharmacist or other healthcare provider.

Make sure that naloxone is available for people who may ingest or snort prescription drugs from non-medical sources.

Naloxone is the reversal agent for opioid overdose and can work for individuals who have overdosed on fentanyl.

Foster Votes to Restore Reproductive Rights and Abortion Access Nationwide

Rep. Casten Votes for Active Shooter Alert Act

Rep. Casten voted for legislation to quickly warn Illinois communities of a nearby active shooter. The Active Shooter Alert Act will establish a program similar to the AMBER Alert system, allowing law enforcement to effectively and efficiently alert the public during a shooting.

Secured by the Democratic House Majority, today’s passage follows House Republicans’ inexplicable attempt to obstruct this life-saving legislation last month.

Yesterday, I voted for The Active Shooter Alert Act to give departments the technology to send out AMBER Alert-like messages in the case of active shooter incidents. As we work to enact this urgently needed legislation, House Democrats will continue fighting to overcome Republican obstruction and bring our nation’s gun violence epidemic to an end.”

Since 2009, communities across the nation have been torn apart by nearly 300 mass shootings – attacks that have killed more than 1,500 people and wounded 1,000 more.

Among the most urgent challenges during an active shooter incident is the need to prevent additional victims from unknowingly walking into the line of fire.

The Active Shooter Alert Act will support these life-saving efforts by establishing an Active Shooter Alert Coordinator at the U.S. Department of Justice. The Coordinator will offer state and local law enforcement officials voluntary access to training, technical support and advice for improving or implementing active shooter alert systems.

These resources include guidance on the most effective alert content, delivery strategies and recommendations such as silencing alerts in the immediate vicinity of a shooter.

This legislation is strongly supported by major law enforcement organizations, including the National Sherriff’s Association, Major Cities Chiefs Associations, National Association of Police Organizations, Fraternal Order of Police, National Police Foundation and National District Attorneys Association.

Last month, Rep. Casten voted for the the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act – the country’s first major gun violence prevention legislation in nearly three decades.

Historic Summit on BlackDoctor. org Focused on Men’s Health Reaches Over 80K CHICAGO, PRNewswire -BlackDoctor.org (BDO) in partnership with the Rodham Institute at George Washington University broadcasted a historical Men’s Health Summit (MHS). This virtual summit was held in honor of the observance of Men’s Health Awareness Month and reached over 80K. Bikes & Music Announces Summer “Fun-Raiser!” Group Ride and Cookout to Follow Online Fundraising Drive Bikes & Music, a Chicagoland 50 (s) (3) nonprofit corporation, has a goal to raise $25,000 by August 20,2022. The funds are needed for the repair of donated bicycles, and for the purchase of new bike helmets and locks, The bikes and equipment will be provided to children and adults in need.

Since the start of 2022, Bikes & Music has collected over 100 bicycles throughout Chicagoland. “We received a terrific response to our spring bike drive,” says Bikes & Music co-founder Ryan Gable. “We have supported organizations that are doing amazing work, like Home of the Sparrow and RefugeeOne. We’ve supplied these refurbished bikes along with helmets and locks to children and some adults that need bikes for fun for but also as a mode of transportation to work and school!”

The challenge now and mission of the fundraiser is to cover the tune-ups and repairs for these bikes. When you add in the cost of helmets and locks, it takes about $100 to get each bike ready to go an into the hands of someone that desperately wants one.

Gable explains that repairing used bicycles keeps them out of landfills. “We could almost buy new bikes for what repairs and parts cost sometimes. But we are dedicated to doing the right things for the planet by recycling bikes that just need a little love. We’re fortunate to have support from two local bike shops (Crank Revolution in Hoffman Estates and Never-Ending Cycles in Streamwood) for the safety checks, maintenance and repairs.

They do everything they can to keep our costs to a minimum.”

CPS Office of Student Health and Wellness Wins National Award for Leadership in Providing Comprehensive Student Services agriculture lab that provides a training space to equip teachers and school garden teams in various agriculture processes that can be used in classrooms and gardens. Over 200 schools have Gender and Sexuality Alliances (GSA) to enhance safe and supportive school environments, and 130 schools participate in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, bringing hands-on nutrition education to thousands of students each year. In addition, OSHW experts provide programming and technical assistance to schools around mental health, sexual health education, LGBTQ+ support, physical activity, school gardens, direct health services, and enrollment in and utilization of public health benefits such as Medicaid and SNAP. This year’s Summer Kickbacks are made possible through a whole-of-government approach and partnerships with the Chicago Park District, the Department of Family and Support Services, the Community Safety Coordination Center, Amazon and 15 community-based organizations that are working together to create spaces where our young residents can safely gather.”

The two-part Summer Kickback Series programming includes Friday events designed by teens for teens and City-led Saturday night events. Through community-based organizations, the City hired 210 teens who plan Friday events that are designed for teens ages 13 to 24 and their families in 15 communities on the South and West sides. Each of the 15 community-based organizations have hired 14 teens for 8 weeks, with each teen being paid $15 an hour. During the eight weeks of employment, the planning team promotes youth-focused opportunities and plans and hosts a Summer Kickback event every Friday between 5 and 9 p.m. The first event will be Friday, July 8, and will conclude on Friday, August 12. Each community will also have one “mothership” event this summer, an enhanced version of a kickback that will include a smoothie bar, e-gaming, a DJ and more activities with support from the Chicago Park District.

This summer, the City will also host ten supplemental Low-Key Kickbacks: Saturday Edition, on Saturdays from 6 to 9 p.m. The LowKey series will bring food, entertainment, and various activities to the South and West sides, starting July 23 at Grand Crossing Park. Entertainment will include prominent Chicago DJs, steppers and breakers, sporting events, a selfie station, art activations, and free COVID-19 vaccination sites. Reps. Davis, Gomez, Peters, & Panetta Introduce Bill to Help Millions of Struggling Renters via Innovative Tax Credit WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Danny K. Davis (D-IL), Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-CA), Rep. Scott Peters (D-CA), and Rep. Jimmy Panetta (DCA) introduced innovative legislation to help millions of cost-burdened renters at a time when housing costs are skyrocketing as the gap between incomes and housing costs grows. The Rent Relief Act creates a new tax credit for renters that would cover a percentage of the difference between 30 percent of their adjusted gross income and the actual cost of rent and utilities, capping the benefit at 100% of Small Area Fair Market Rent. The bill makes the credit available to most working families by allowing the credit for families earning up to $100,000. Further, it delivers help when needed with monthly payments to pay bills when they are due, building on the successful advanced Child Tax Credit that helped tens of millions escape poverty.

Stable housing is foundational for the social, emotional, and economic well-being of individuals and families.

Nationally, 8 million of the lowest-income renters spend at least half of their income on rent, leaving them little remaining to cover other basic needs for food, clothing, and health care. Despite the profound need, only 1 in 4 eligible households receives any help, and some households spend years on waitlists due to inadequate funding. Creating a new renters’ tax credit – along with expanding targeted investments to increase supply – can help end America’s housing crisis.

His Name Is George Floyd

George Floyd was murdered by a Minneapolis police officer just over two years ago. His killing sparked a movement to end unjustified police killings and racist law enforcement practices. Sadly, the killings have not stopped.

The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act was blocked by Senate Republicans last year. The struggle continues in communities large and small.

During racial justice protests that sprung up after video of Floyd’s murder spread around the world, millions of people spoke his name as they demanded accountability and justice.

Now, a remarkable book examines Floyd’s life and death in the context of our history and what one of the authors calls the “complex, tangled web” created by racism in this country.

“His Name Is George Floyd: One Man’s Life and the Struggle for Racial Justice” was written by Washington Post reporters Robert Samuels and Toluse Olorunnipa. It draws on the reporting of their colleagues and on intimate interviews with Floyd’s family, romantic partners, and circle of friends.

At a time when politicians are making it illegal for educators to acknowledge that systemic racism exists, Samuels and Olorunnipa document in painful detail the ways in which racially discriminatory policies on housing, education, health care, addiction, policing and more contributed to “a life in which Floyd repeatedly found his dreams diminished, deferred, and

derailed—in no small part because of the color of his skin.”

“For example,” Samuels says, “you could not disentangle police departments’ disproportionate use of force against African Americans from the junk science that is still taught about black people being more resistant to pain. We could not ignore that those same instincts led to the inadequate mental health treatment in George Floyd’s life, nor could we separate that society both encouraged George Floyd to bulk up to pursue his athletic dreams and then stereotyped him as dangerous when he was off the field.”

The book doesn’t try to make Floyd a saint. It doesn’t have to. He was a human being. He did nothing to deserve being murdered on the street by an abusive police officer who shouldn’t have been wearing a badge.

“His Name Is George Floyd” is worth reading for many reasons. It gives us a fuller picture of the person George Floyd was. It introduces us to many people who loved him and sought a measure of justice for his murder. And it points to some important facts about policing in this country.

One is the need for accountability. Chauvin had a record of violent behavior. When abusive cops are not held accountable, more people will be subjected to their violence.

Another point is that policing is a local issue requiring local solutions. National policies, like those in the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, can help. But holding violent cops accountable, getting them off the streets, or better yet, preventing them from getting hired in the first place, all require change at the local level.

People For the American Way spent the two years since Floyd’s murder developing a road map for transforming public safety. We looked at the research. We talked to criminologists,

public officials, clergy and other community activists, and members of law enforcement. “All Safe: Transforming Public Safety” is a guide for public officials and community activists seeking to make their communities safer.

Among the essential steps to make policing more just and more effective at the same time: improving recruiting to weed out potentially dangerous cops, holding violent officers accountable, and getting unfit officers off the force. Also, importantly, restructuring public safety systems to reduce the unnecessary involvement of armed officers in situations where they are not needed and for which they are not trained is good for cops as well as communities.

The authors of “His Name Is George Floyd” describe optimism in the face of our history as both a defense mechanism and a means of survival. I am optimistic that we can end unjust police killings. I am optimistic that we can build the uncomfortably large coalitions it will take.

“Our book makes the argument that if we can demonstrate step-by-step how this country’s history with racism continues to shape people today, then we can continue the good work of dismantling systemic racism,” Samuels told me in an email. “We have to connect the theory with the practice.”

That job belongs to all of us. We know what kind of changes will make our communities safer. Let’s organize, city by city and town by town, to make it happen.
