2019 HBCU COMPETITIVENESS SCHOLARS ANNOUNCED The White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (Initiative) recently announced the names of 44 students from 34 historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) selected as 2019 HBCU Competitiveness Scholars – the Initiative’s highest student recognition.

Competitiveness Scholars are recognized for the 2019-2020 academic school year. Throughout this period, the Initiative will facilitate engagement activities, as well as provide information and resources that scholars can take advantage of or disseminate to fellow students. Scholars are encouraged to fully take advantage of the opportunities provided, engage with one another and showcase their individual and collective talents across the HBCU spectrum.

Competitiveness Scholars will receive their recognition at the HBCU week conference during the Initiative’s Excellence in Innovation and Competitiveness Awards luncheon ceremony on Sept. 9.

BATS LEAD IN U.S. RABIES RISK Bats are responsible for roughly 7 in 10 rabies deaths among people who are infected with the rabies virus in the United States, possibly because people may not know of the risk bats pose, according to the Vital Signs report released recently by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The large percentage of deaths tied to bats is particularly striking since bats account for just a third of the 5,000 rabid animals reported each year in the U.S. Rabid dogs that people encounter while traveling overseas are the second-leading cause of rabies cases in Americans.

The U.S. averages 1-3 human cases of rabies a year now, down from 30-50 cases per year in the 1940s. This decrease is largely due to routine pet vaccination and availability of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), which combines rabies vaccine and rabies immune globulin to prevent infection after exposure to the virus. Each year, about 55,000 people in the U.S. seek PEP after a potential rabies exposure. Rabies is nearly always fatal if people don’t get rabies PEP before symptoms start.

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR COMPLIANCE EVALUATION RESULTS IN FEDERAL CONTRACTOR PAYING $50,000 IN BACK WAGES After a routine compliance evaluation by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP), Consolidated Diesel Inc. – a federal contractor and subsidiary of Cummins Inc. – has agreed to pay $50,000 in back wages for alleged pay discrimination against African-American managers at the diesel engine manufacturing facility in Whitakers, North Carolina.

OFCCP alleged that – since at least 2013 – the company paid 11 African-American managers less than white managers in similar roles.

“Federal contractors and subcontractors must comply with all federal anti-discrimination laws,” said OFCCP Southeast Regional Director Samuel Maiden. Although the company did not admit liability, it will take steps to ensure its pay practices meet the legal requirements.

Polished Pebbles is a nonprofit organization with a mission to provide mentoring for young girls, particularly young women of color, with an opportunity to learn how to be effective communicators and put them on a path to success in whatever career they choose to pursue.

“Polished Pebbles is a girls mentoring program and we focus on making sure girls are great communicators at home, school, and in the future workplace. Our long term goal is to ensure the employability of girls in their future workplace,” said Kelly Fair, founder and executive director of Polished Pebbles.

The Polished Pebbles Girls Mentoring program aims to build confidence in young girls and to equip them for the challenges of daily life by replacing negative forms of communicating and problem-solving with new ways for them to garner respect and build a strong reputation for themselves, according to information on the Polished Pebbles website.

After operating for nearly a decade, Polished Pebbles was recently awarded a

grant from the Safe and Peaceful Communities Fund for the second year in a row. The grant will support their summer program for mothers and daughters which takes place twice a month and focuses on mentoring and career networking for the mothers and social-emotional learning for girls.

“We are really fortunate to be a second-year grantee of this fund,” said Fair. “We think, and know that the research says, that workforce development and careers are really great deterrents to protect our girls from violence and one of the things we realized over time is that our girl’s moms often are in need of the same skill sets.”

Polished Pebbles created the summer program for mothers and daughters as an extension of their Annual Mommy and Me Career Day which is an event that brings together single mothers and their teenage daughters for a day of learning, mentoring, and career exposure.

The summer program is open to the girls who are currently participating in the Polished Pebbles mentoring programs and their mothers.

Woman-Owned Bookstore and Gallery Celebrates Grand Opening Semicolon Bookstore (www.semicolonchi.com), located on 515 N Halsted Street, will celebrate its grand opening beginning on Tuesday, July 9th and going through Saturday, July 13th. Having began their soft-opening period on June 8, the store has been open to customers for shortened hours and is getting to know the neighborhood.

Created by Chicago entrepreneur, Danielle Mullen, the idea for Semicolon came from the owner’s love for reading in museums. The store provides a gallery space downstairs where interested readers can watch the artist of the month work in their gallery space.

“I wanted literature and art to kinda collide and create this experience that would further connect the two worlds-or at least cause a lover of one to want to know more about the other,” said owner. The store will host authors for readings and artists for live installations monthly.

One of only two woman-owned bookstores in Chicago, Semicolon is the only Black woman-owned bookstore in the city, according to a press release. Soft-opening hours are available on the website (www. semicolonchi.com/hours), as well as a calendar outlining grand opening festivities.

“This is going to be a series of six workshops over the summer where moms and daughters come together to work on communication skills, career skills, and we are really focusing on entrepreneurship this summer. They will be working on the building blocks of entrepreneurship and thinking about different businesses that they would be interested in,” said Fair.

In addition to talking about entrepreneurship, participants will also learn about building their brands and marketing themselves through a partnership with Nerdy Media who will lead a digital learning experience.

Nerdy Media will teach the mothers and daughters how to create their own podcast along with other technical skills that are important for 21st-century careers.

“This is just an opportunity for moms and daughters to bond and create that tight emotional bond but then they are learning and building skills together. Moms are becoming better equipped to support their daughters in their walk of life and vice-versa,” said Fair.

State budget allocates millions more to Chicago State University

Keeping a campaign promise to invest more in higher education, Gov. J.B. Pritzker made sure the state’s 2019 budget included a funding boost for Chicago State University.

The 2019-20 budget, which goes into effect July 1, allocates $36.9 million to CSU for general operations, additional expenses and its pharmacy program; $33.7 million in capital upgrades (distributed over six years) and includes $15.8 million to build a simulation lab for the health science and pharmacy program.

State funding previously for CSU was $34.6 million for fiscal year 2018, $38.2 million in 2017 and $21.7 in 2016.

CSU President Zaldwaynaka “Z” Scott said while she requested a 20 percent funding increase from the state, she is grateful for five percent.

“We are pleased with the leadership of Gov. Pritzker, our legislative leaders and the General Assembly,” said Scott. “Their commitment to CSU scholars and the families of Illinois is valuable.”

The new budget will also increase general funding for higher education by $154 million or 8.2 percent, which is the largest since 1990, according to the Illinois Board of Higher Education.

Included in the budget is $1.16 billion to cover daily operations at Illinois’ nine public universities, which is a 5 percent increase over last year.

And beyond four-year institutions like CSU, community colleges are getting a funding boost too. The state budget increases funding by 12.3 percent from the 2018-19 school year for community colleges, which is up $33.2 million for a total budget of $303 million. City Colleges of Chicago is set to receive $27.6 million, while Moraine Valley Community College in Bridgeview will receive $43 million, and $35.7 million goes to South Suburban College in South Holland.

Pritzker said the funding increase was long over due and was necessary if state universities and community colleges are to remain competitive with out-of-state institutions.

“We’re investing in the things that really matter in this state,” said Gov. Pritzker at a June 5 press conference after signing the $40 billion spending plan. “Many of these things haven’t been

addressed for 20 years.”

The rising cost to attend college has made it difficult for many students especially those from low-income households to attend, which is why Pritzker said the state’s Monetary Award Program grant would also see its funding increased by $50 million to $451.3.

In 2018, CSU enrollment was 2,964 and Scott said last year, nearly half of its students received a MAP grant, which helps cover tuition for low-income students.

“The increase in funding for the MAP grant was vital to higher education funding in Illinois,” said Scott. “More than 95 percent of our undergraduates receive financial aid and depend on funds like the MAP grant to complete their education.”

Tuition and fees at CSU for full-time, newly admitted students for the 2019-20 school year is $12,704 for a full academic year. The rate applies to both in-state and out-of-state U.S. students.

And housing costs vary depending on occupancy type. A single room rate is $4,210 per semester and a double room rate is $2,250 per semester minus the cost for a meal plan, which ranges from $1,426 to $2,112 per semester.

As the only four-year, public university on the South Side, Scott said CSU is a unique educational institution because it is ranked as the number one public university in the state and the second highest in the nation for educating and supporting black student scholars; ranked third in the nation by the American Physics Society for graduating blacks in physics each year; its School of Pharmacy is ranked number one in the Midwest by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy for educating minority student scholars; and CSU has a 100 percent job placement rate in healthcare fields.

Scott added that the extra money from the state this year would ultimately help CSU continue its mission of educating students.

“Our first priority is the success of our students. This budget will help us implement data-driven decisions around best practices for student success programs,” said Scott. “We also have plans for improved and increased technologies in the classrooms and wrap-around student services to enhance student learning.”

Thanks to an increase in higher education from the state, Chicago State University will receive a boost in funding for the 2019-20 fiscal year and it includes $33.7 million in capital upgrades.

Cancer-Sniffing Dogs 97% Accurate in Identifying Lung Cancer Three beagles successfully showed they are capable of identifying lung cancer by scent, a first step in identifying specific biomarkers for the disease. Researchers say the dogs’ abilities may lead to development of effective, safe and inexpensive means for mass cancer screening.

After eight weeks of training, the beagles—chosen for their superior olfactory receptor genes—were able to distinguish between blood serum samples taken from patients with malignant lung cancer and healthy controls with 97% accuracy. The double-blind study is published in the July edition of The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association.

“We’re using the dogs to sort through the layers of scent until we identify the tell-tale biomarkers,” says Thomas Quinn, DO, professor at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and lead author on this study. “There is still a great deal of work ahead, but we’re making good progress.”

The dogs were led into a room with blood serum samples at nose level. Some samples came from patients with non-small cell lung cancer; others were drawn from healthy controls. After thoroughly sniffing a sample, the dogs sat down to indicate a positive finding for cancer or moved on if none was detected.

ing completion of a second iteration of the study. This time the dogs are working to identify lung, breast and colorectal cancer using samples of patients’ breath, collected by the patient breathing into a face mask.

Researchers say findings suggest the dogs are as effective detecting cancer using this method.

The next step will be to further fractionate the samples based on chemical and physical properties, presenting them back to the dogs until the specific biomarkers for each cancer are identified. The goal is to develop an over-the-counter screening product, similar to a pregnancy test, in terms of cost, simplicity and availability. Dr. Quinn envisions a www.thechicagocitizen.com

device that someone can breathe into and see a color change to indicate a positive or negative finding.

Early detection key Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death worldwide for both women and men, and more than 200,000 people annually in the United States receive a diagnosis of lung cancer. The five-year survival rate for stage IA non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is 92%. That drops to 13% in stage IIIC NSCLC, and after metastasis, the five-year survival rates range from 10% to less than 1%, depending on the stage.

Additionally, screening and imaging for lung cancer is costly and not

always reliable. Chest X-rays have a high false-negative rate, while CT scans with computer-aided diagnosis have a high false-positive rate. Previous studies indicated that 90% of missed lung cancers occur when using chest X-rays, and CT scans have difficulty identifying small, central, juxtavascular lung cancers.

Dr. Quinn believes his research can lead to better screening and diagnosis solutions, potentially creating a change in cancer detection.

“Right now it appears dogs have a better natural ability to screen for cancer than our most advanced technology,” says Dr. Quinn. “Once we figure out what they know and how, we may be able to catch up.”

Hinton Selected as BUFI’s Chairman of the Board of Directors

As the city of Chicago has welcomed its new mayor, the Black United Fund of Illinois welcomes its new chairman of the Board of Directors, Gregory Hinton.

Considered one of the foremost leading authorities on diversity/ inclusion practices, Hinton made history when he was appointed as the first chief diversity officer for the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in 2011. Prior to joining the DNC, Hinton was the senior director/ chief diversity strategist at U.S. Cellular Corporation.

With 35 years of global experience working in corporate environments, such as Abbott, Pepsi, Amtrak, Advocate Health Systems, and R.R. Donnelley, Hinton is currently the CEO of the GREGORY GROUP consulting firm. In this capacity, he is called upon to validate, reinforce and highlight major related practices of organizations looking for external voices to echo the need for personal responsibility.

As BUFI’s board chairman, Hinton is replacing an icon: Professor Robert Starks. “Bob has been the Board Chair since BUFI’s inception. It’s hard to fill the shoes of such a community giant,” stated Hinton.

In filling those shoes, Hinton is tasked with providing leadership in the area of fundraising and increasing

BUFI’s number of program offerings, along with identifying additional Board members to help serve the organization.

“I’m glad to work with our newlyappointed Executive Director Carolyn Day in ensuring that BUFI runs effectively and efficiently. Together, we have plenty of ideas and plans to keep BUFI moving in the direction that our late, esteemed founder and leader, Henry English, would expect of us,” shared Hinton.

In 1986, English—with a diverse group of businessmen, educators and community leaders— organized BUFI making it the 16th independent affiliate of the National Black United Fund.

The National Black United Fund was founded on the principles of self-help, mutual aid and volunteerism in order to create systematic mechanisms to rally resources for African-American communities.

By creating the necessary systematic mechanisms, Hinton believes that BUFI must meet the increasing needs of the community through programming and advocacy, and one of his responsibilities as board chair is to “serve as the face of BUFI, while expanding BUFI’s mission and vision to the broader community.”

SBA Appoints Two New Senior Executives The U.S. Small Business Administration recently announced the appointment of two new senior executives. George Koklanaris is serving as the Associate Administrator for the Office of Small Business Development Centers and Stefanie Baker Wehagen as the National Ombudsman for the Office of the National Ombudsman.

George Koklanaris oversees the SBA’s Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) across the United States and its territories. The SBDCs provide the nation’s small businesses with the support and resources necessary to help them succeed.

Koklanaris previously served at the SBA as a Special Assistant and the Assistant Administrator of the Office of Field Operations and Director of the Office of Strategic Alliances.

Stefanie Baker Wehagen is the National Ombudsman and Assistant

Administrator for Regulatory Enforcement Fairness. As the National Ombudsman, Wehagen is responsible for assisting small businesses when they experience excessive or unfair federal regulatory enforcement actions, such as repetitive audits or investigations, excessive fines, penalties, threats, retaliation or other unfair enforcement action by a federal agency. 41st Annual Chicago Jazz Festival

The Chicago SummerDance series offers free, introductory one-hour dance lessons by professional instructors followed by live music and dancing in Grant Park.

23rd Annual Chicago SummerDance Brings Communities Together The Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Event is pleased to announce the lineup for The 23rd Annual Chicago SummerDance, the largest annual outdoor live music and dancing series in the United States.

Dancers of all ages and experience levels are invited to the Spirit of Music Garden in Grant Park, Taste of Chicago, Millennium Park and Chicago Park District locations throughout the city for Chicago’s premier dance festival. The diverse lineup showcases various traditional and modern dance styles from all corners of the globe and brings communities together in a unique, urban dance space all summer long.

The official start of Chicago SummerDance on Wednesday, June 26, will celebrate the Year of Chicago Theatre with square dances, polkas, waltzes, contra and swing at Theater on the Lake (2401 N. Lakeshore Dr.) The old-fashioned barn dance will feature live music from the Golden Horse Ranch Band and instruction by third-generation caller Annie Coleman.

The final weekend will culminate at the SummerDance Celebration in Millennium Park on Saturday, August 24, featuring a full day of social dancing and performances from 1 to 8pm throughout the park. Highlights include: the Wrigley Square Dance Village, participatory dancing on the Great Lawn and at Cloud Gate, professional dance performances at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion and much more.

SummerDance will move to Buckingham Fountain Plaza during Taste of Chicago, happening Wednesday, July 10, through Sunday, July 14, from 5:30 to 8:30pm. SummerDance in the Parks, happening Wednesdays, June 26– August 21, will feature dancing at seven different neighborhood parks throughout the city including Douglas Park, Humboldt Park Boathouse, Jackson Park Grove 6B, Ping Tom Memorial Park, Portage Park, Theater on the Lake and Willye B. White Park. Unless otherwise noted, the free dance lessons begin at 6 p.m., with live music and dancing from 7 to 9pm. SummerDance Downs in the Park will return to Chicago Park District locations, co-presented with Open the

Circle. Dance downs showcase black youth dance groups from across the city. Today’s dance groups are famous for their performances at the Bud Billiken Parade and other parades across the city and beyond. Several groups travel nationally to perform, winning awards and recognition from television programs like Bring It!, while instilling community, leadership and self-confidence in Chicago youth. Dance Downs in the Park are organized in partnership with leading companies The Era Footwork Crew, Empiire and Bringing Out Talent.

Music is provided by “the youngest in charge” DJ Corey and his father DJ Clent, godfather of footwork music and juke in Chicago. SummerDance will feature three Dance Downs at Hamilton Park Cultural Center on Saturday, July 27, Austin Town Hall Park on Saturday, August 17, and at Cloud Gate in Millennium Park on Saturday, September 21, at YAS! Fest, a celebration of Chicago’s creative youth.

Presented by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) and sponsored by the Chicago Transit Authority, SummerDance brings people of all ages and experience levels together. Admission to all programs is free.

The 41st Annual Chicago Jazz Festival will take place on August 23 to September 1 at Millennium Park, the Chicago Cultural Center (78 E. Washington St.) and at other venues throughout the city. The free-admission festival will include a special tribute to Nat King Cole by his brother Freddy Cole and a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Jazz Institute of Chicago, the festival’s programming partner.

Other performances at Millennium Park’s Jay Pritzker Pavilion include: Cécile McLorin Salvant, Christian McBride, Eddie Palmieri, Ambrose Akinmusire Quartet, Ben Wendel Seasons, George Freeman and Billy Branch, Camila Meza, Latino-America Unidas with Miguel Zenon, Antonio Sanchez, Melissa Aldana and David Virelles, Joel Ross, Ryan Cohan’s Originations and the Dave Rempis Quartet.

SSC Hosts Open House for its Paralegal Program South Suburban College is hosting an Open House for its Paralegal Program on Wednesday, June 26th at 6:00 p.m. at the Oak Forest Center. Attendees will learn about a career pathway that is expected to grow 18% through 2020, according to the US Department of Labor.

Information will be provided about SSC’s Paralegal/Legal Assistant curriculum including a 60-hour Associate Degree program and a 39-hour Certificate, both designed to prepare students to become highly trained paralegals and legal assistants. Graduates are equipped with the knowledge, skills and credentials to work in a variety of legal environments including: · Civil and criminal litigation · Law offices, and corporate legal departments · Insurance and banking · Public and governmental agencies According to a news release, SSC has the only American

Bar Association (ABA) approved paralegal program in the Chicago Southland region, giving graduates a huge advantage when entering the workforce. The college also requires that all of the instructors in the program are lawyers or judges to ensure the quality of instruction.

Santana’s Thrilling New Album ‘Africa Speaks’ Debuts At #3 On Billboard Top 200 Music legend Carlos Santana’s new album Africa Speaks, out now via Concord Records, has debuted at #3 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart. Santana surpassed the Rolling Stones and, along with Barbara Streisand, is one of only two music acts in Billboard history to score at least one Top Ten album for six consecutive decades from the 1960s on. This is Santana’s third Top Ten release this decade and his highest charting debut since 2005’s All That I Am. Additionally, Africa Speaks debuted #1 on both the Billboard Rock Albums and Billboard Latin Albums charts.

Santana has amassed an iconic body of work by pioneering a unique fusion of rock, Latin and jazz. On Africa Speaks, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist goes deeper and further than ever before to create one of his most groundbreaking albums yet.

This summer, Redbox and DoorDash Team Up to Serve Up Dinner & A Movie.

The promotion includes free Redbox Movie Night rentals, $0 delivery fees from DoorDash. During this promotion, Redbox is proud to partner with the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption to offer FREE Movie Nights to families adopting from foster care.

Redbox, recently announced a partnership with DoorDash, the largest and fastest-growing on-demand destination for door-to-door delivery in more than 4,000 cities in the United States and Canada.

They will launch an upcoming Dinner & A Movie promotion in the U.S., offerings fans FREE movie nights and $0 delivery fees* on up to three orders delivered through DoorDash nationwide.

Statistics support the need for shared movie nights.

A Redbox Omnibus survey found that two-thirds of Americans miss the days when movie nights were a planned activity with friends and family, according to a Redbox August 2018 Omnibus Survey. And 80 percent thinks movies are therapeutic, yet half are indulging in isolated binge-watching.
