briefly MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY ENCOURAGES FAMILIES TO CELEBRATE SCIENCE ALL SUMMER LONG

The Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago (MSI) is continuing its long-standing tradition of supporting summer learning and encouraging excitement in science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics (STEAM) outside of classroom with the distribution of 5,000 curiosity kits at 150 locations.

Each Curiosity Kit will include four or five curated hands-on activities for children ages 8 to 13, with instructions in English and Spanish, that will encourage them to engage with and explore STEAM content.

The first set of kits, “MSI Curiosity Kits: Observation” are designed to encourage scientific observation with observation journals and mindfulness activities.

The kits will be available in late June at roughly 150 locations, primarily in the city of Chicago within geographic areas that have been underserved. These locations include all 81 branches of the Chicago Public Library and select Chicago Park District locations.

The Park District will also be using these kits in their summer programming.

“The Curiosity Kits are a great way spark interest and excitement in STEAM subjects outside of the classroom during summer break, said Rex Babiera, ITW Director of Professional Learning. “Our goal is to find ways, like the curiosity kits, to bring science to kids, wherever they are, and help them hit the ground running once school is back in session.”

To help build bridges between youth and science inside and outside of the classroom each summer, MSI’s team of science educators design fun, hands-on experiments for kids of all ages using items commonly found at home to encourage curiosity along with the kits. Last year, MSI was able to distribute a total of 3,400 Summer Brain Games kits at 120 locations throughout the city, with 87% of pick-up sites being on Chicago’s South, Southwest and West Sides.

Roseland Medical District encompasses South Eggleston Avenue to the west, West 110th Street to the north, South Edbrooke Avenue to the east and West 112th Street to the south, and includes 95 acres.

In 2011, the Roseland Medical District was established by the State of Illinois. The service area of the medical district includes parts of Washington Heights, Beverly, Morgan Park and Burnside, as well as Roseland, Pullman, West Pullman and Riverdale.

In the earlier part of the year, there were roundtables with the medical industry. The Master Plan draft, along with draft implementation strategy took place in January/ February. In March/April, the Medical District Commission and Hospital Workshop took place. The Draft Plan designs guidelines, as well as implementation strategy were discussed. In May, the final plan and guidelines and implementation strategy were discussed.

There is a proposal for more than 200,000 square feet of mixed use, which would include 38,000 square feet for office space, 75,000 square feet for a health center, 15,000 square feet for a resource center, 15,000 square feet for retail, 18,000 square feet for culture and education space and 24,000 square feet for a fitness center. There are plans to also make the community more walkable, with street improvements and connection to the park, with walkways.

Abraham Lacy, president of the Far South Development Corporation, said the development is long awaited, and that the plan calls for new outpatient clinics and healthcare services for the neighborhood.

“We’re not looking to build a new hospital; we’re looking to support the current Roseland Community Hospital. There’s a need for outpatient services, especially around maternity health. This will bring much needed services to an area that has well over 50,000-plus people who do not have access to quality healthcare,” Lacy said.

Development of the Roseland Medical District also will spur jobs in construction and healthcare that do not exist currently. In-fill housing is also something need-

ed within the Roseland community, and there are plans for developing that as part of the Medical District. Lacy estimates there are more than 2,000 vacant properties or vacant plots of land in the community. There hasn’t been a lot of housing renovations or new home construction in the area. The hope is that the development will bring jobs and people who want to live in the area.

When it comes to transportation infrastructure, the Roseland Medical District Commission has been working closely with the Red Line Extension team and Chicago Transit Authority. On the western border of the Medical District, the 111th Street Terminal will be placed. Construction for that terminal is set to start construction 2025 or 2026.

As part of the Roseland Transformation Plan, Roseland Hospital will be renovated to include an OB-GYN and behavioral therapy, situated above the Emergency Room. There will also be renovations to the surgery rooms.

The hope is that with the Roseland Medical District, there will be an influx of academics with the training opportunities, and it will create a pipeline of healthcare and social service providers. These things will help stabilize an area that desperately needs those kinds of resources.

The Roseland Medical District has the support of the Illinois Black Legislative Caucus, Congresswoman Robin Kelly, Alderwoman Carrie Austin, Alderman Anthony Beale and Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

According to Lacy, once the plan is approved by the Planning Commission, the 200,000 square feet at 111th and State Street will be rezoned, and most of everything else is zoned for hospital and healthcare use. It is anticipated that it will take two years, after the plan is approved for any vertical development to take place.

“This is the anchor that is going to sustain the Roseland neighborhood, the long-awaited investment. This is at the core of the City’s INVEST South/West project,” Lacy said. “We’re very excited about it. We think this will be the silver lining that is needed to pick up Roseland out of the decades of dilapidation and move it toward a much more brighter future.”

Chicago – Attorney General Kwame Raoul, along with Idaho Attorney General Lawrence Wasden, Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson and Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, today led a bipartisan coalition of 31 attorneys general urging the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to reject marketing authorization for all non-tobacco nicotine products, which are currently being sold without regulatory constraints on their contents, manufacturing, health effects or marketing claims. Should the FDA grant marketing authorization to such products, Raoul and the coalition insist the FDA must impose the same restrictions required of tobacco-derived nicotine products.

To create nicotine products derived from substances other than tobacco, manufacturers have turned to chemicals with potential health impacts that are less understood than their tobacco-derived nicotine counterparts. Yet, these non-tobacco nicotine products have not faced the restrictions on sales and marketing that the FDA requires for tobacco products. As a result, these products are being sold in a variety of fruit and other flavors and have become increasingly popular with youth. A new law signed in March by President Joe Biden gives the FDA jurisdiction to regulate these products and requires that manufacturers now seek FDA approval to sell them.

“Synthetic nicotine manufacturers are marketing an unregulated combination of chemicals used to create nicotine and to flavor their products in ways that appeal to young people.

We don’t know the long-term health effects of many of these ingredients, but we do know that these products have been major contributors to the recent epidemic of youth e-cigarette use,” Raoul said. “That is why we are calling on the FDA to take swift action to regulate non-tobacco nicotine products.”

In today’s letter, Raoul and the coalition argue that these products currently fail to satisfy the FDA’s public health standard, and that public health should not be gambled on the unknown effects.

If the FDA grants marketing authorization to non-tobacco nicotine products, despite the health risks to consumers and especially to youth, Raoul and the coalition maintain that the FDA must impose the same restrictions required of tobacco-derived nicotine products. This would include a ban on all products that include a flavor other than tobacco and strict regulatory requirements regarding their contents, manufacturing, and effect on users’ health. Products should carry warnings concerning their addic-

tiveness, and manufacturers should be required to validate health claims made about their products, such as claiming that a product is safer than tobacco.

The lack of regulation on non-tobacco nicotine has created an unlevel playing field, as this one category of products has evaded regulatory burdens and restrictions, while its competitors undertake the expense and effort required to conform to FDA requirements.

Non-tobacco nicotine products have also skirted the tobacco bans of some major online retailers and are available for purchase online from sellers that do not sell tobacco. These regulatory disparities create incentives for more manufacturers to switch to non-tobacco nicotine products, expanding the problem.

Raoul and the coalition argue that there is no justification for regulating non-tobacco nicotine any differently than tobacco-derived nicotine. If anything, synthetic nicotine’s obscure origins, unexplored chemical characteristics and use in flavored products that appeal to youth call for heightened vigilance.

The letter is part of Raoul’s ongoing work to combat the dramatic increase in youth e-cigarette use and holding e-cigarette manufacturers accountable for epidemic usage levels among youth and teens. In 2021, Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed into law Raoul’s legislation that prohibits companies from marketing e-cigarettes to minors, misleading advertising and the sale of adulterated e-cigarettes. In 2020, Raoul filed a lawsuit against Juice Man LLC over allegations the company allegedly developed and marketed its products to attract minors. In 2019, Raoul’s office filed a lawsuit, which is ongoing, against the nation’s largest e-cigarette manufacturer, Juul Labs Inc. The Attorney General’s office is also continuing to evaluate other e-cigarette manufacturers as part of a continuing investigation into the e-cigarette industry. Additionally, Raoul has urged the FDA to ban flavored tobacco products and to strengthen e-cigarette guidance by prioritizing enforcement actions against flavored e-cigarettes.

FOSTER INTRODUCES LEGISLATION TO REDUCE STUDENT LOAN FINANCIAL BURDEN ON PARENTS

Recently, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) introduced the Parents PLUS Loan Fairness and Responsibility Act. This legislation would allow students to take over the student debt that was incurred on their behalf, providing a sensible solution for parents facing multiple financial burdens.

Specifically, the legislation would allow parents to transfer Parents PLUS loans to the student with the consent of the parent, student and lender, provided the student meets the credit requirements for the PLUS loan program and is at least six months removed from leaving school. After transfer, the loan would be eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness.

“As college costs and economic burdens continue to rise, federal law should allow families to determine financial liability for PLUS loans in a way that accommodates their financial situation,” said Foster. “This legislation would provide a common-sense solution by allowing a child, if they’re willing, to take financial responsibility for the loans that allowed them to go to college.”

The Parents PLUS Loan Fairness and Responsibility Act is endorsed by the National Education Association.

NEW BELT LAW BANS BURNING TOXIC CHEMICALS IN ILLINOIS

Burning toxic synthetic chemicals will be banned thanks to a measure sponsored by State Senator Christopher Belt that was signed into law Wednesday.

“PFAS can harm people and the environment,” said Belt (D-Swansea). “This initiative stems from concerns that our neighbors have surrounding the waste incinerator in Sauget, which puts Metro East residents at risk of exposure to these harmful substances.”

The new law bans incinerating materials covered under the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Toxic Release Inventory that contain perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, also known as PFAS. Thermal oxidation for the purposes of pollution control, combustion of gases at landfills, medical waste incinerators and byproducts generated by municipal wastewater treatment facilities are exempted.

MARTWICK KICKS OFF SUMMER READING PROGRAM TO KEEP STUDENTS ENGAGED

Chicago - To encourage young people to continue learning during the summer, State Senator Robert Martwick is launching a Summer Reading Club for students on Chicago’s Northwest side.

“The love of reading when I was young helped me get to where I am today,” said Martwick (D- Chicago). “Even though the school year will soon be over, participating in this reading club will keep kids sharp and creative during their summer break.”

Primary Endorsements The Primary Election in Illinois is next Tuesday, June 28, 2022, and it is a pivotal one in our history. Choosing proper representation is important in an environment where we face pandemics, drug epidemics, gun violence, car jackings, food shortages and health disparities. Now is the time for us to act and make the changes that we so desperately need.

Over the past several weeks we have utilized our podcast and newspaper platforms to introduce some newcomers and for other candidates making an appears we simply wanted to remind you of their track records.

Although some of the candidates featured were first timers in the political arena, their ideas of changing issues that plague our neighborhoods was enough to sit down and listen to what they had to say. During that same process we talked to candidates who have already served in some political compacity and have a track record that will not only qualify them for the seat they seek but it shows they will go to work on day one for their constituents.

During this election process we must keep in mind the works and promises of those we elected and re-elect to represent us. If they don’t work replace them, and that is what an election season brings. We must hold them accountable. On Tuesday, get out to the polls and vote your choice and be the change that you want to see We encourage you to put in the work necessary to elect the best candidate who can and will go to work on day one. With that said we gladly present our 2022 Primary endorsements in several races.

Governors’ Choice for Illinois

JB PRITZKER

Pritzker has served as Governor of the State of Illinois since January of 2019. In his tenure as Governor, he made the largest investment in state history to upgrade Illinois infrastructure rebuilding and replacing roads, bridges, rail, broadband and schools. Each year Governor Pritzker has been able to pass a balanced budget and canceled out a billion-dollar bill paying backlog. He improved the states credit rating, created jobs, and made secondary education more affordable to anyone desiring to further their education. The governor signed into law in 2020 one of the country’s highly debated issues, “The Illinois Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act making Illinois the 11th State in the Union to legalize the sales of medical and recreational Marijuana. Also, in 2020 the country was hit by the largest healthcare crisis ever seen on American soil, COVID. The Governor shut down the state to keep the residents across the State of Illinois safe. Did all agree to the shutdown “No”, but fewer lives were lost because of those measures. We understand that setting a plan for what you will do if elected is just part of the race.

But when an elected official takes office and executes and deliver on most of the plans promised then that is a clear sign

that they are willing to seriously work for all people and not a few select. We are happy to say that we are endorsing the incumbent in the race for Governor in the State of Illinois and believe that he will finish what he promised. If not he and anyone running must be held accountable.

Cook County Board President

TONI PRECKWINKLE Preckwinkle is no stranger to County government. Although, during her last term she faced much opposition from voters and even from County board members within her own administration about a bill she sponsored implementing a surge of taxes to be added on sugary drinks. Shortly after the customers started to see the increase at the checkout counter, the failed sugar tax became a thing of the past. In her power as President of Cook County Board Toni has worked to improve County government so it works for the people.

Here’s what she’s done lately as the current Cook County Board President: Allocated resources to the community from the $1 billion CARES ACT that Cook County received from the Federal Government. The Guaranteed Income Pilot, which consists of a two-year investment in individuals and families and is believed to be the largest guaranteed income program in the country. The Cook County government is putting $12 million in helping people take care of medical debt. In addition to that there will be a $240 million investment in Provident Hospital.

Funds will allow for upgrades of the existing facility, investing in a new emergency room and medical equipment. The Black and Brown communities across the County face many challenges and disparities and this investment speaks to the issue of change. Although there’s much work to be done, this gesture shows that the current administration is listening and willing to move the needle on improving the quality of life for the people in the County. Now we know that the County government is listening to our voices, and they are putting in the work that shows change. We think that Toni Preckwinkle deserves a 4th term as Cook County Board President.

DAVID MOORE Moore has been an Alderman for the 17th Ward since 2015. Moore wants to do his part to fight crime after becoming the next Secretary of the State of Illinois if elected. He will add digital license plates, which could curb carjackings as the technology would record the car’s location and mark the car as stolen for other drivers to see. He also wants to create Secretary of State satellite offices at libraries to alleviate crowding at its current facilities. Moore wants to create 122 youth engagement offices at every Driver’s facility throughout the State of Illinois giving them access to jobs and other related resources. He believes whether as a private citizen or public official, that there is no job is too small or too large for him to tackle to improve the lives of neighbors and constituents—both locally and statewide.

VERNARD L. ALSBERRY, JR. Alsberry has been the President of the Village of Hazel Crest for almost nine years. Alsberry began his political career as an elected official in Hazel Crest serving as a trustee for eight years. In 2018, South Suburban Hospital built a $98 million surgical center in Hazel Crest. In 2019, Hazel Crest opened a new Village Hall. Alsberry credits those accomplishments to himself and for being a part of the community that works together and being able to build relationships. MCA CHICAGO ANNOUNCES NEW EXHIBITION FEATURING CHICAGO-BASED ARTIST GREGORY BAE CHICAGO – The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago is thrilled to announce the opening of Chicago Works: Gregory Bae. The exhibition will be on view from Tuesday, June 28, through Sunday, Jan. 29, in the Sternberg and Rabin galleries on the museum’s third floor. A public opening reception will take place at the museum from 1 to 3 p.m . Saturday, July 9. The exhibition is organized by Nolan Jimbo, Marjorie Susman Curatorial Fellow.

Bae’s kinetic sculptures, drawings, and videos undertake the romantic yet futile project of pausing time, imagining the possibility of resisting the forces of aging, decay, and separation. Throughout the exhibition, everyday objects loop, stutter, or fail: a tire spins atop a treadmill, clocks tick in place, and acrylic frames preserve torn sheets of paper. Meticulously rendered landscapes also appear within Bae’s work, which attempts to overcome distances both physical and cultural. In particular, translation and travel between the United States and South Korea are recurrent themes throughout the show.

“Chicago Works: Gregory Bae gathers a focused selection of Bae’s work, which melds the language of conceptual art with urgent discussions related to race and the limits of representation.

While the artist’s work speaks in the broadest terms of time and space, it subtly alludes to his personal experience as a first-generation Korean American, moving seamlessly between the universal and the culturally specific,” says Nolan Jimbo, Marjorie Susman Curatorial Fellow.

The first solo museum presentation of Bae’s work, the show is part of the MCA’s Chicago Works exhibition series, which spotlights Chicago-based artists who are shaping the local contemporary art scene.

“Over the past decade, the Chicago Works series has served as a platform for the city’s most experimental artistic practices, reflecting the diversity of Chicago’s artist communities and the rigor of the work made here.

Chicago Works: Gregory Bae spotlights Bae’s meticulously crafted conceptual projects, which contemplate the poetics of time and distance through

a diasporic lens. In light of the artist’s recent passing, we hope this exhibition will both acknowledge Bae’s lasting impact on artists in Chicago and build awareness of the poignant work he left behind,” says René Morales, James W. Alsdorf Chief Curator.

2021, Chicago, IL) received a BFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA in painting and drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he also served as a lecturer.

In 2021, he founded Chicago API Artists United (CAAU) in response to anti-Asian sentiment in the United States. In 2018, he co-founded exhibition space Bill’s Auto, Chicago. Solo exhibitions of Bae’s work were presented at table, Chicago (2019); 4th Ward Project Space, Chicago (2018); Federico Luger Gallery, Milan (2017); The Mission Projects, Chicago (2017); Chicago Urban Art Society (2015); and Opsis Art, Seoul (2015).

He received awards from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, New York; Chicago Artists Coalition; and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, New York.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. The museum is generously supported by its Board of Trustees; individual and corporate members; private and corporate foundations, including the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation; and government agencies.

Programming is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency.

This collective gathering will bring together Illinois and Chicago’s most progressive and respected Black media platforms to present all of the respective candidates running for Illinois, Cook County, and City of Chicago positions in the June 28 Primary Election.

WVON, TBTNews, Chicago Crusader, N’DIGO, Citizens Newspaper Group, Bronzeville Life, The Tribe, Lunch with Brunch, South Suburban News, The Gospel Times, and Chicago Defender_, have been working together over the last few years to secure national and local advertisement and shared content, in order to present a more comprehensive and meaningful media. The landscape of media is changing and it’s crucial that local media outlets search for additional and more sustainable business opportunities to not only challenge the changing media landscape but to overcome the many challenges that will see media transform drastically over the next ten years.

The Black Media Coalition has come together to address the changes and to work together collectively, as well as individually, to solve the

many issues that can both either halt or expand the growth of a more connected media especially since more media is now being consumed via online and through smartphones.

The Black Media Coalition has decided to work on select projects that generate revenue and share in progressive content that each associated media platform represents.

This progressive event planned for Sunday, June 26 will be one of those events that will demonstrate the “Power of the Black Press” as each media platform will communicate with its readers, listeners, or viewers. The content and stories distributed in promoting this event will ensure that the supporters of our collective brands have an opportunity to engage and get answers to some of their most pressing questions about select elected officials and those running for public office. This is an exposure event that allows Black Media to be seen, heard, appreciated, and respected!

Most importantly, this event will also be an opportunity for the Black Press to thank the many members of Illinois State Legislators, and hopefully, Governor JB Pritzker, for the passing of a bill that enables each media outlet to receive 10% of all state spending on advertising. This is a huge deal and it's long overdue! The Black Media Coalition in Chicago continues to script stories for their community and about their community--with passion and purpose! Let's look at the history of the Black Press: On March 16, 1827, the first edition of Freedom’s Journal was published, thrusting African-Americans into the bustling publishing business. At the time, Blacks in America weren’t even considered citizens, most were slaves and forbidden to read or write. The Black Press is an aspect of the fabric of the Black existence in America that is not getting enough attention or support from the community.

Long before Black Twitter and online blogs … and so the Black Press is not only an essential voice, but it is also a historical and cultural archaeological goldmine that we must preserve. One of the oldest Black-owned business industries in America, the Black Press began more than 190 years ago.

Dorothy Leavell, publisher of the historic Chicago Crusader newspaper, said in the early years, the Black Press became one of the only means of communication between Black people. Black men and women were vilified in the New York press in the 1800s," Leavell said. “Some White newspaper publishers sought to defend the dignity, honor, and character of Black people.”

When celebrating the 190th anniversary of the Black Press in 2017, because of the courage of John Russwurm and Samuel Cornish who dared first to publish the Freedom’s Journal, the Black Press remains the trusted and audacious voice of Black America. Without the Black Press, genuine stories of African-Americans would go untold.

Only Black people can tell their stories accurately.

We are as relevant today as we were when the Freedom’s Journal said they wanted to tell our story in our words.

The Black Press continues to capture current events that aren’t borne from reports done by other media outlets. There are so many people who are reconnecting with the spirit of our ancestors to get our own bootstraps to pull ourselves up. Black entrepreneurs are daring to defy the business norms in an effort to explore financial freedom and chart new territory that we can call our own.
