2 NEWS briefly DOORDASH ANNOUNCES THE INAUGURAL COHORT OF ACCELERATOR FOR LOCAL GOODS PARTICIPANTS In March, DoorDash debuted the Accelerator for Local Goods – an educational program designed to uplift local consumer packaged goods businesses owned by entrepreneurs who are women, transgender, immigrants, or people of color. DoorDash is proud to announce the inaugural cohort of business owners from Chicago, New York City, and the greater Washington DC area who have been selected to participate in the six-week program designed in partnership with Next Street aimed at providing educational resources and funding for participants to grow their businesses.

This class of innovators represents a wide range of identities, with 77% of participants identifying as female, 40% of participants identifying as Black or African American, 7% Hispanic or Latino, and 21% Asian or Pacific Islander. Immigrant-owned businesses make up 20% of the participants and the top product categories include sweet snacks, grocery products, non-alcoholic beverages, and salty snacks.

In addition to participating in the educational programming, businesses will receive a $5,000 grant to support their growth, access to marketing and sales support from DoorDash, plus the opportunity to sell their items via DashMart -- a DoorDash-owned and operated grocery and convenience store.

For many participating entrepreneurs, this will mark the first time their products have been distributed outside of their own websites.

Cook County President outlines new investments Continued from page 1

The goal was to be fiscally responsible, transparent and improve the services offered by the County.

“We have a historic opportunity to spend $1 billion in federal resources, that will be invested in recovery from the pandemic,” Preckwinkle said, adding that the City of Chicago received $2 billion in federal resources.

According to Preckwinkle, with a total of $3 billion to invest, and on the County side, 70% will go to the suburbs and 30% will go to the city. And, 5.2 million people will be impacted by these investments.

Preckwinkle is looking forward to investing, not just in the communities, but in the residents of Cook County.

In order to find out what are the most effective ways to invest the money, Cook County engaged constituents. That engagement included canvassing door-to-door, surveys and Cook County Commissioners hosted Town Hall meetings.

Cook County has a Guaranteed Income Pilot, which is invested $42 million into. It consists of a two-year investment in individuals and families and is believed to be the largest guaranteed income program in the country. This is in addition to the $11 million Cook County spent with CARES Act resources during the pandemic. The goal with the $11 million was to give people a one-time infusion of cash so people could meet their food, housing and medical needs.

The aim is to roll out the program by the end of 2022.

Cook County also is putting $12 million in helping people take care of medical debt. Preckwinkle acknowl-

edged that medical debt plays into people having to file for bankruptcy. Preckwinkle outlined a process where Cook County would go to collection agencies and buy the medical debt with the aim of helping people clean up their credit and pay their bills.

Cook County wants to invest in behavioral health and create an office of Behavioral Health within the Cook County Department of Public Health. Preckwinkle believes it is something that is needed. Cook County will continue to support public health and public safety.

Preckwinkle believes that in order to decrease the violence, investments must be made in those communities and it is not something cities can “police their way out of.”

There will be a $60 million investment in violence prevention and reduction programs, with $50 million to address the urgent, short-term needs, and the remainder going to longer term commitments. The money will go to community-based organizations that focus on violence prevention, anti-recidivism and restorative justice work.

Cook County is coordinating with the City of Chicago and the State of Illinois in an intergovernmental municipal working group to ensure the investments are not duplicative.

There will be a $240 million investment in Provident Hospital, upgrading the existing facility, investing in a new emergency room and medical equipment.

Preckwinkle also highlighted that in late April, Cook County administered it one millionth COVID-19 Vaccine shot. “I’m grateful to all the good people who have been on the frontlines delivering care,” she said.

RAOUL URGES FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION TO CONSIDER STATE ENFORCEMENT EFFORTS DURING RULEMAKING TO ADDRESS FOR-PROFIT SCHOOLS’ DECEPTIVE EARNINGS CLAIMS Chicago – Attorney General Kwame Raoul led a bipartisan coalition of 24 states urging the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to consider the action states have taken to address misrepresentations made by for-profit colleges and universities during its rulemaking process related to schools’ deceptive earnings claims. In March, the FTC issued a request for comments regarding deceptive or unfair earnings claims made by a broad range of businesses, including for-profit schools. Raoul and the coalition are calling on the FTC to take into account misrepresentations schools have made with respect to their graduates’ earnings as the agency considers proposing rules governing the broad use of such earnings claims.

“Students are the ones who suffer the consequences when for-profit colleges and universities make deceptive claims about graduates’ earnings and post-graduate success,” Raoul said. “Illinois and states around the country have been acting to hold for-profit schools accountable for misleading students, and we are urging the FTC to take states’ enforcement experiences into account as it decides how to evaluate earnings claims schools can make.”

In comments to the FTC, Attorney General Raoul and the coalition highlight the negative impact of for-profit schools’ misrepresentations, particularly on communities of color. The attorneys general also emphasize the outsized harm student loan debt can have on students of for-profit schools. Attorney General Raoul and attorneys general throughout the country have taken extensive actions in response to misrepresentations made by for-profit schools, which often promise graduates lucrative jobs in sought-after career fields. Unfortunately, these representations often prove

to be false, and deceived students can be left with loans that can follow them for the rest of their lives.

In the comments, Raoul and the coalition note states’ experiences with misrepresentations for-profit schools have made regarding the amount, source and adequacy of graduates’ earnings. For instance, Attorney General Raoul and other attorneys general submitted a group discharge application to the U.S. Department of Education in April 2021 as a result of ITT Technical Institute (ITT) misrepresenting the amount of graduates’ projected annual earnings by up to $100,000.

Attorney General Raoul and the coalition also point to a 2015 settlement with Westwood College that resolved allegations Westwood misrepresented the ability of criminal justice students in Illinois to be employed as police officers in Illinois. Finally, the coalition notes with concern the inability of some graduates to earn sufficient income to repay the student loans they had to take out to attend for-profit schools.

The Illinois Attorney General’s office has long been a national leader in investigating and enforcing consumer protection violations in the higher education field. Since entering office, Attorney General Raoul has secured over $160 million in relief for Illinois borrowers who were deceived by their school, private lender, or servicer. Earlier this year, Raoul’s office announced a $1.85 billion national settlement with Navient, formerly the nation’s second largest student loan servicer.

On Tuesday, May 10, Chicago Public Schools announced the inaugural launch of the Please Stay mental health and suicide prevention campaign aimed at seventh through twelfth grade students. CPS is the first school district to implement the initiative, developed by Born This Way Foundation and Find Your Anchor in response to increased rates of depression, suicide, and anxiety disorders among young people.

“This campaign reminds students of the importance of prioritizing their mental health and of the many supports that are available to them,” said CPS CEO Pedro Martinez. “I am so proud of all our students who take this pledge and who reach out for support if needed.”

Campaign materials, including a teacher/ counselor’s guide, pledge cards, and digital resources were shared with schools last week, coinciding with Mental Health Awareness Month, to help school staff connect with students and elevate the importance of getting help if needed. The new campaign is part of growing mental health services and supports available across CPS, including ongoing work to support LGBTQ+ students with policies, procedures, and resources that create safe and inclusive learning environments.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the mental health of children and adolescents was already a concern but data released last month by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the crisis has grown amid the past couple of years. The data shows approximately one in three high school students experienced poor mental health (most of the time or always) during the COVID-19 pandemic (37.1%) and during the past 30 days (31.1%) and 44 percent reported persistently feeling sad or hopeless in the past year.

Rooted in lived experience and supported by evidence-based resources, Please Stay is an interactive and accessible initiative aimed at educating students about mental health. As part of the campaign, developed in 2020, individuals are asked to take the Please Stay Pledge, in which they agree to stay alive, and reach out for support if needed.

Staff members, including school counselors, will be talking about the campaign in classes over the next few weeks, referencing self-care habits and mental health resources, and showing students this CPS Please Stay video. The campaign addresses the comprehensive mental well-being of students’ emotional, psychological, and social health and provides tips and resources to help them cope when stressed.

“Young people are facing very real mental health challenges and we need to meet them with kind, compassionate messages, and helpful resources,” said Maya Smith, Born This Way Foundation’s Executive Director. “We are grateful for partners like Chicago Public Schools for working to eliminate the stigma that surrounds mental health and validate the emotions of young people. Most importantly, we want to remind young people everywhere that it’s ok to not be ok. You matter, you are not alone, the world needs you, and there are resources and support available for you.”

Some of the Please Stay tips for students include:

Practice Self-Care so they can maintain healthy relationships with themselves and others. Suggestions: Enjoying a movie, listening to music, unplugging for the day, journaling, spending time outdoors, meditating and reaching out to others when help is needed.

Find Anchors to steady themselves in times of stress. Suggestions: Game nights, playing basketball, enjoying favorite foods and treats, spending time with friends and family.

Undertake Soul-Filling Activities that make them happy. Suggestions: Cheering someone on, making someone laugh, gardening, using less plastic, reaching out to a friend.

Additional Mental Health Resources & Staff The initiative is one of several Districtwide new or expanding measures to address and support mental health and well-being both inside and outside the classroom. The District’s comprehensive Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Policy , adopted in March 2022, establishes criteria schools must follow to create safe and supportive environments in which students feel comfortable talking about mental health, are aware of their schools’ resources to support mental health, and know who to talk to if they or a peer need help. This includes engaging students and parents/caregivers in mental health education and awareness, focusing on equitable learning environments and social emotional climate, ensuring protections for LGBTQ+ students, (see CPS Guidelines Regarding the Support of Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Individuals) and training requirements for all staff.

Next year’s CPS budget allocates funding for 623 social workers and 117 counselors, up by 60 and 53, respectively, from this year. The District will also continue to increase its nursing staff as well as professionals who support students in temporary living situations.

Comprehensive Behavioral Health Team Model In addition to the Please Stay campaign, the District recently announced it is expanding its successful school-based Behavioral Health Team (BHT) model, developed and implemented with Lurie Children’s Hospital. The model aims to maximize resources and collaboration, provide early identification of students with behavioral health needs, and connect students to evidence-based interventions.

Already piloted in more than 200 CPS schools, the District will begin expanding these teams to all 515 of its network schools next August with the goal of reaching all schools by School Year 2023-24.

“This is a critical time of year - as both staff and students sprint to complete end-ofyear projects and productions as well as take part in field trips and school celebrations. This campaign reminds us to take a moment and remember to breathe and take care of ourselves and each other,” said LaSalle Elementary Language Academy Principal Chris Graves.

Putin’s unjustified invasion of Ukraine has cut off a critical source of wheat, corn, barley, oilseeds, and cooking oil. It has also disrupted global supply chains for fertilizer, which farmers depend on to maximize yields. These and other actions, combined with the ongoing pandemic-related disruptions to global supply chains, have put pressure on food prices, with global food prices increasing nearly 13 percent following Putin’s invasion.

America’s farmers are the breadbasket of democracy and are already playing a critical role in the fight against Putin’s Price Hike. During President Biden’s first year in office, American agricultural exports shattered all previous records, reaching a combined $177 billion, generating an estimated $378 billion in total economic output, and supporting 1.3 million jobs here in the United States.

The President recently announced new actions to give farmers the tools and resources they need to boost production, lower food prices and feed the world. As the world’s second largest exporter of wheat and soybeans, these actions will help grow new markets for American-grown food, supporting jobs in rural communities across America. Specifically, the Biden-Harris Administration will: • Increase the number of counties eligible for double cropping insurance: • Double cropping allows farmers to plant a second crop on the same land in the same year, helping boost production without relying on farmers to substitute crops or cultivate new land. But it is not free from risk and some farmers who practice double cropping cannot obtain crop insurance, including those in Kankakee County, Illinois.

• The Biden-Harris Administration is seeking to expand insurance for double cropping to as many as 681 additional counties, bringing the total number of counties where this practice qualifies for crop insurance to as many as 1,935, so more American farmers have the financial security they need to start or expand double cropping.

• Cut costs for farmers by increasing technical assistance for technology-driven “precision agriculture” and other nutrient management tools: • Precision agriculture is a farm management system that allows farmers to use technology to target the application of inputs to soil and plant needs, resulting in less fertilizer usage without reducing yields, saving farmers money over time and extending the usefulness of critical products in short supply worldwide.

• The U.S. Department of Agriculture has planning and cost sharing assistance programs available to help American farmers with nutrient management. The Biden-Harris Administration is working to boost outreach to farmers, streamline the application process, and prioritize application approvals to expand access to these critical programs.

• Double funding for domestic fertilizer production: • Fertilizer prices have more than doubled since last year, due in part to supply chain disruptions created and exacerbated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, including rising energy costs.

• President Biden announced that he is doubling his initial $250 million investment in domestic fertilizer production to $500 million to lower costs and boost availability for farmers, so they can obtain the inputs they need at prices they can afford to maximize yields.

Barry S. McLeod Continues to Make His Mark (Black PR Wire) Affectionately referred to as Florida’s Own, Barry S. McLeod is a talented writer, director, producer and musician with over four decades of experience in the industry. The Gainesville native had dreams of making his mark in the entertainment industry as a young boy where began playing drums in his uncle’s church. He went into the Navy right after high school and formed a band playing bass guitar. Upon leaving the Navy with an honorable discharge, he became a hairstylist. Although a hairstylist by profession for 34 years, McLeod was always a prolific writer who dreamed of success on Broadway or in Hollywood.

To expose himself to the entertainment industry, McLeod started writing, choreographing, directing and producing fashion shows for local organizations.

At the same time, he played in professional bands doing many gigs for various organizations and clubs. Later, he decided to write for film and although he got two close calls, nothing really worked out.

Determined not to give in or give up, McLeod started writing, directing and producing his own stage plays and presenting them for churches. A man of many talents, McLeod also acted in them and would go on to produce a stage play tour. Continuing to make his mark, McLeod was unceasing in writing for film and also wrote and self-published four books. He continued playing in bands and DJ’ing while filming a series of short films and sitcoms.

McLeod admits that he was encouraged by the late Professor James Haskins (The Cotton Club). “He critiqued my first screenplay and told me that I had potential.” Somewhat of a mentor to me, I learned from him and I took off like a rocket in search of a destination. Cooking Swaps to Help Manage CHOLESTEROL

(Family Features) When cooking, keep in mind small changes that can make a big impact on heart health.

High cholesterol is one of the major controllable risk factors for heart disease and stroke, with about 38% of American adults diagnosed with high cholesterol, according to the American Heart Association. It can be managed by getting levels regularly tested and making lifestyle changes like eating a heart-healthy diet.

• Reduce saturated fat – Select lean cuts of meat or opt for plant protein, limit processed meats, broil or bake rather than pan-fry meats and remove skin from poultry before cooking.

• Eat more fish – Fish can be fatty or lean, but it’s still low in saturated fat.

Choose oily fish like salmon or trout, which are high in omega-3 fatty acids.

• Use liquid oils in place of solid fats – For roasting, sauteing and more, use non-tropical liquid vegetable oils like canola, safflower, soybean or olive instead of butter, lard or shortening.

• Lower dairy fats – Low-fat,

Preheat air fryer to 390 F. In shallow dish or pie pan, whisk flour, parsley, oregano, pepper and cayenne.

In separate shallow dish or pie pan, whisk buttermilk and hot sauce.

In third shallow dish or pie pan, stir panko and Parmesan.

Place dishes and large plate in row. Dip chicken in flour mixture then buttermilk mixture then panko mixture, turning to coat at each step and gently shaking off excess. Using fingertips, gently press panko mixture so it adheres. Place chicken on plate.

Cover and refrigerate 30 minutes.

Lightly spray chicken with nonstick cooking spray. Arrange chicken in single layer in air fryer basket, working in batches if needed. Cook 10-15 minutes, or until chicken is no longer pink in center and coating is golden brown, turning once halfway through and lightly spraying with nonstick cooking spray.

Chicken Tortilla Soup

Servings: 4 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, visible fat discarded, cut into 1/2-inch cubes 2 cups frozen whole-kernel corn, thawed 2 cups fat-free, no-salt-added chicken broth 1 can (14 1/2 ounces) no-salt-added, diced tomatoes, undrained 1/4 cup finely chopped onion 1 teaspoon sugar 1 teaspoon ancho powder 2 medium garlic cloves, minced 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 corn tortillas (6 inches each), cut into 1/4-inch-wide strips 1 corn tortilla (6 inches), torn into pieces 2-4 tablespoons snipped fresh cilantro 1/4 cup finely chopped avocado 1/4 medium red bell pepper, cut into matchstick-size strips In slow cooker, stir chicken, corn, broth, tomatoes, onion, sugar, ancho powder, garlic and salt. Cook, covered, on low, 6-8 hours, or on high, 3-4 hours.

Preheat oven to 350 F. On baking sheet, arrange tortilla strips in single layer. Bake 8-10 minutes, or until crisp. Transfer baking sheet to cooling rack. Let strips stand 15 minutes, or until cool.

Transfer to airtight container and set aside.

When soup is ready, transfer 1 cup to food processor or blender. Stir in tortilla pieces. Let mixture stand 1 minute. Process until smooth. Stir mixture into soup. Stir in cilantro.

Ladle soup into bowls. Sprinkle with avocado, bell pepper and reserved tortilla strips.
