Unfortunately, many children are unaware of these institutions. “The ABCs of HBCUs,” written by Claudia Walker and published by HBCU Prep School, is raising awareness about Black colleges.

From A to Z, “The ABCs of HBCUs” gives readers a front-row, all-inclusive tour of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. It is the first children’s book to introduce young readers to college campuses like Howard University, Spelman College, Lincoln University and Meharry Medical College. Readers also learn about time-honored traditions such as the Battle of the Bands, homecoming, and Black fraternities and sororities. Award-winning brand-designer Jessica E. Boyd provided the illustrations for the book. This is a debut book release for Walker and Boyd.

FDA APPROVES FIRST IMMUNOTHERAPY FOR INITIAL TREATMENT OF GASTRIC CANCER The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently approved Opdivo (nivolumab), in combination with certain types of chemotherapy, for the initial treatment of patients with advanced or metastatic gastric cancer, gastroesophageal junction cancer and esophageal adenocarcinoma. This is the first FDAapproved immunotherapy for the first-line treatment of gastric cancer.

“Today’s approval is the first treatment in more than a decade to show a survival benefit for patients with advanced or metastatic gastric cancer who are being treated for the first time,” said Richard Pazdur, M.D., director of the FDA’s Oncology Center of Excellence and acting director of the Office of Oncologic Diseases in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “The FDA is committed to bringing new safe and effective treatment options like Opdivo to patients with advanced cancer.”

DURBIN JOINS CONGRESSIONAL BLACK CAUCUS VIRTUAL HEALTH SUMMIT ON GUN VIOLENCE U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, recently joined a “Virtual Health Summit on Gun Violence” hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus Health Braintrust. The discussion focused on addressing gun violence in Chicago and nationwide, including how public health systems are conducting violence intervention initiatives to reduce violence. The event was also hosted by U.S. Representative Robin Kelly (D-IL-02) and Obama Administration Education Secretary Arne Duncan, now Managing Director of Chicago CRED. “Gun violence is at an epidemic level and we need to take on this crisis with public health solutions,” Durbin said. “We have seen promising public health intervention efforts in Chicago and I’ve been proud to be closely associated with several of them: traumainformed care, and the HEAL Initiative. My hope is that the work being done in Chicago can help public health institutions drive real results in their communities.”

Good deed changes philanthropist’s life Continued from page 1

Mona Purdy says going to Guatemala and competing in a half marathon changed her life.

The founder and president of Share Your Soles, an organization which provides shoes to people around the world, said she started the organization because she was trying to teach her three children how it feels to do something good in private.

Purdy was helping a group of cyclists from Guatemala and wanted to mail them some supplies. She found it was cheaper for her to get an airplane ticket and fly with the supplies, so she did that. While there, she was in a village in the rainforest where there was a half marathon happening.

“I’m used to running in America, where we run with shoes on the street. This is in the rainforest on rocky terrain, and I was the only woman, only Caucasian, and the only one with shoes on,” she said, adding that it was challenging because the half marathon took place at high noon in the sweltering heat.

During the half marathon, Purdy said she saw children on the side of the road, that put hot tar on the soles of their bare feet because they didn’t have shoes to wear.

“It’s really hard to run in the heat when you’re crying,” she said. She added, at the time, she was going through a divorce, but she still saw the need these children had,

and wanted to do something about it. This prompted her to start collecting shoes. On the trip back, Purdy encountered a nun at the orphanage where she was donating the shoes she had collected. “When she said, ‘when are you coming back?’ out of respect, I was like, coming back, no, I’ve done my good thing, this was a one time thing. But, I couldn’t say that to her, it was like, I’ll be back, bye,” she said.

Purdy said when she returned home, shoes had piled up at her house. It was then, in 1999, Share Your Soles was born.

She said Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, helped with starting Share Your Soles. He sat on the board of Share Your Soles.

Twenty-two years later, Purdy still collects and distributes the shoes to places which include Haiti, countries in Africa, Central America, South America, Southeast Asia and to Indigenous Peoples Reservations in America. “I keep doing it because the need has gotten greater. And, I thought it was for people that received the shoes and the last 18 years, I realized it’s people in America who benefit from knowing their efforts benefit someone they will never know, meet or see, in a land far away from America where people live on, sometimes less than $2 a day,” she said.

Purdy said she has hand delivered 5 million pairs of shoes, but she collected more than that. She said she didn’t deliver some of the shoes because of the quality of the shoes. She said half of what they

collect, they don’t deliver. “I’m trying to teach Americans when you’re sharing, make sure what you share is intact. We don’t recycle, refurbish or repair. The way we get shoes, it goes to people, people that in some cases, have never owned their own pair of shoes, so the quality must be up to par,” she said.

Purdy said not only does she accept shoes, she also accepts monetary donations. Those monetary donations go toward shipping the shoes. Share Your Soles sends shoes to 40 locations around the world. In addition to the shoes, the corrugated boxes they are shipped in can be used for storage or for other useful purposes, including roofing.

Purdy said Africa is her baby. She built a library and named it after her adopted mother there -- The Elsa Bandi Reading and Literacy Center – in a refugee camp. She said her favorite places are Uganda, Haiti, Cameroon, Kenya and Ghana.

Share Your Soles is located at 11201 S. Cottage Grove. Purdy said it is a great location where people can come as a family, bond and do something good for someone else. She said the Divine Nine and people from the South Side have donated and volunteered their time, and for that, she is grateful. The location had been closed since March 2020 due to COVID-19, but reopened in April. The organization is now accepting donations.

Homes in Black Neighborhoods Are Undervalued by an Average of $46,000, according to new report The average home in a primarily Black neighborhood nationwide is worth $46,000 less than a comparable home in a primarily white neighborhood, according to research outlined in a new report from Redfin (www.redfin.com), the technology-powered real estate brokerage.

Redfin analyzed value estimates for more than 7 million homes that were listed and sold from 2013 through February 2021, accounting for the fundamental factors that contribute to a home’s value, such as size, condition, neighborhood amenities and schools. The $46,000 gap exists after accounting for those fundamental factors.

“Our analysis rules out all the factors that are typically associated with home value and still finds a significant difference between the values of otherwise nearly identical homes in similar Black and white neighborhoods. We’re left with bias and systemic racism to explain the variation in home values,” said Redfin Senior Economist Reginald Edwards. “Today’s Black homeowners are missing out on $46,000 worth of wealth due to racist housing policies that were outlawed in the 1960s and continuing biases among homebuyers and housing professionals in parts of the homebuying process like appraisals and mortgage lending—and that’s $46,000 that would multiply as the years go on and benefit future generations.”

The fact that homes in Black neighborhoods are worth less is one reason for the racial wealth gap in the U.S., as home equity is a major way to build wealth. Black Americans are far less likely to own homes than white Americans: Just over 44% of Black Americans own the home they live in, versus 74.5% of white Americans. The Black families who do own their homes have less equity than other races, with median home equity of $89,000 in January 2021 versus $113,000 for white families.

Although Redfin’s analysis measures the undervaluation of homes in primarily Black areas after accounting for similarities and differences in neighborhoods, racial bias has also led to gaps in amenities between Black and white neighborhoods. For instance, areas with a high share of Black residents are likely to have less access to green space than white neighborhoods, and schools in minority neighborhoods are much more likely to be underfunded than those in white neighborhoods. Discrepancies like those undervalue homes in Black neighborhoods beyond what’s measured by Redfin in its analysis.

The home-value gap between Black and white neighborhoods has remained essentially the same over the last decade The value gap between homes in Black and white neighborhoods has held steady over the last eight years, fluctuating just slightly year by year. Homes in primarily Black neighborhoods nationwide were valued at an average of roughly $41,000 less than comparable homes in primarily white neighborhoods in 2020, compared with a $46,000 devaluation in 2013.

“No real progress on the racial home-value gap has been made over the last decade, which highlights the depth of the problem and how difficult it is to change,” said Redfin Chief Economist Daryl Fairweather. “There isn’t a

policy that would make people less prejudiced.

We would need to see a broad cultural shift in the way homebuyers view neighborhoods that are predominantly Black. I’m hopeful that can happen. It used to be that many white homebuyers would consider a neighborhood undesirable if there were any Black residents at all, but now diverse neighborhoods aren’t as stigmatized. However, there still appears to be a stigma against primarily Black neighborhoods.

Unfortunately, the longer Black Americans have lower home values than their white counterparts, the longer they are missing out on wealth that could be used for other investments and to pass along to their children.”

Though undervaluation of homes in Black neighborhoods is larger in 2021 than any other year included in this analysis, the 2021 data only accounts for data through February and is likely to change as the months go on.

Case Study: Homes in primarily Black neighborhoods in Chicago are undervalued by more than $56,000, accounting for crime rates To illustrate undervaluation, Redfin looked at homes that have sold over the last five years in Chicago. Crime rates are one factor in sale

prices. Incorporating crime rates into Redfin’s city-level analysis for Chicago shows that all else being equal—including crime rates— homes in primarily Black neighborhoods are valued at an average of $56,000 less than comparable homes in primarily white neighborhoods. Crime rates aren’t included in the national analysis because there’s insufficient data for many cities; Chicago is one of a handful of cities for which Redfin included crime rates in its analysis.

“Homes in majority-Black parts of Chicago are valued lower, and the cycle set in motion by policies like redlining make it tough to equalize home values,” said Arnell Brady, a Redfin mortgage advisor based in Chicago. “There’s simply a perception that a home in mostly Black Bronzeville, for example, is worth less than a home in Lincoln Park, which is mostly white. It might be the exact same house, but the demographics and amenities of the neighborhood are different.”

Although neighborhood differences contribute to the gap in home values, similar homes in similar neighborhoods still show a gap in home values when the only observable difference is the racial makeup. To illustrate the point, Redfin compared two similar properties

in neighborhoods with similar crime rates on the South Side of Chicago. This 1,300 squarefoot single-family home, located in the Beverly View neighborhood—which is primarily Black—sold for $172,000 in November 2017.

And this home, also a 1,300-square-foot single-family property and located about three miles south in the Beverly Hills neighborhood—which is primarily white—sold for $217,500 in July 2016. Both homes have three bedrooms and two bathrooms. They’re located so close to each other that they’re zoned for the same middle school and high school, and they each have a Walk Score of 47, meaning most errands require a car.

Median home prices in Chicago dropped by $15,000 between July 2016 and July 2017, but even taking that into account, these two comparable homes in similar neighborhoods should have sold for much closer to the same price.

A combination of causes and possible solutions Redfin’s report outlines several causes that contribute to the continuing disparity in home values in Black versus white neighborhoods.

This includes current racial biases of individuals—such as real estate agents, appraisers, and homebuyers themselves—as well as systemic racism at play within institutions involved in the homebuying process.

It also explores potential solutions to reduce discrimination and work towards equality in home valuations. This includes investments at the federal and local level in communities and directly to Black homebuyers, confronting the racial bias of individuals involved in the homebuying process, diversifying the real estate industry, and more.

Millennials Make Their Mark, Highlighting a Big Shift in the Investing Landscape A much broader range of Americans are investing and engaging in U.S. financial markets, with Millennials, as well as households with the smallest amount to invest, growing in influence from year-end 2017 through June 30, 2020, according to a new quantitative study released by Broadridge Financial Solutions, Inc. (NYSE: BR), a global Fintech leader.

This study, the first-of-its kind and scale – Broadridge Insights on U.S. Investors – provides unprecedented evidence-based data and observations of investors who buy mutual funds, ETFs and equities through financial intermediaries. The study covered tens of millions of U.S. investor households and billions of data points, providing a unique perspective across generations, geography, educational attainment, channels, investment products, and wealth tiers.

“We are all witnessing an unprecedented and accelerated democratization of U.S. investing,” said Bob Schifellite, Broadridge’s investor communication solutions president. “The signs are undeniable as younger investors, particularly Millennials, grew as a percentage of investors studied from 9% to 14% during this period. Additionally, households with the smallest amount to invest, referred to as the Mass Market, grew in influence from 30% to 38% of investing households.

Many are investing using cost-effective ETFs, and more have broader access to low-cost institutional shares, highlighting a changing investing landscape.”

Key Findings include: * Millennials are up-and-comers in the market Millennials (born 1981 – 1996), the fastest-growing generation in numbers of investors studied, will continue to grow within the Mass Market segment and beyond. Millennials grew as a percentage of overall U.S. investors studied from 9% to 14% over the period and Gen X (born 1965 – 1980) grew from 24% to 27%.

Boomers (born 1946 – 1964) decreased as a total percentage of investors studied from 46% to 43% and the Silent Generation (born 1928 – 1945) also declined as a percentage of investors from 20% to 14% – but both still comprise 57% of the number of investors analyzed across the generational segments studied. * Mass Market rise The Mass Market, defined as households with less than $100,000 in investable assets, grew in influence with a rising share of households and Assets Under Management (AUM).

During the study period, the Mass Market grew from 30% to 38% of households with Mass Affluent ($100K to <$1MM) dropping from 57% to 51% and High Net Worth ($1MM+) dipping from 13% to 11%.

The Mass Market also represents a growing share of asset ownership, defined as investments in mutual funds, ETFs and U.S. equities. Despite lower household AUM of 10% of the overall assets studied, the Mass Market gained 3% in asset ownership share since 2017. In contrast, Mass Affluent and High Net Worth AUM decreased over the same period.

“The study highlights trends that are indicative of things to come and present enormous opportunity for asset managers and advisors who adapt to address the emerging needs of investors,” said Dan Cwenar, Broadridge’s president of data and analytics. “Money is expected to continue to flow into low-cost investment vehicles such as passive and active ETFs and Millennials and Mass Market investors will continue to gain influence as their assets grow.” * Investors purchased low-cost Institutional Shares and ETFs While A-class shares and institutional shares are the most widely held by households, A-class shares declined in household ownership from 43% at the end of 2017 to 39% on June 30, 2020. During the same period, household ownership of institutional shares grew from 44% to 54%.

Household ownership of ETFs grew steadily from 30% to 37%. In contrast, the share of mutual funds increased 2% over this period, although

U.S. equities growth was flat. * Limited Pandemic Asset Shifts Effects Seen Across Generations, but Equities Rise Boomer and Silent generations were at or above their pre-Covid AUM levels by the end of June 2020.

Boomer and Silent generations comprised 76% of household AUM and fared slightly better than Gen X and Millennials who were slightly below pre-Covid AUM levels.

However, purchases of U.S. equities increased to 31% as of June 30, 2020, a 3% uptick over 2019. Increases were experienced (in order) by Millennials, Gen-X and Boomers. * Regional Differences The highest concentration of Mass Market households was in the South (38%) while the highest concentration of High Net Worth (HNW) households was in the West (41%) – California alone accounted for 28% of HNW households.

Mass Affluent households were more evenly divided across regions, with the highest concentration in the South (32%).

The South consistently had the highest concentration of households across all distribution channels ranging from 31% for RIA, 31% for Online, 33% for Broker-Dealer and 35% for Wirehouse. However, the least concentration varied with Bro-

ker-Dealer and RIA both at 19% in the Northeast and Wirehouse (18%) and Online (19%) in the Midwest.

Study Methodology Drawing on anonymized data, this study delivers a unique, evidence-based view of investor holdings. * Represents 44 million U.S. households that invest in mutual funds (open-end, closed-end), U.S. equities and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) sold through financial intermediaries. * Utilizes a de-identified sample of 20,000 households extracted from a dataset of those 44 million investor households spanning billions of data points. * Includes data for year-ends 2017, 2018 and 2019 and the first half of 2020.

This study focused on individual investor holdings through intermediaries. The sample does not include: * Institutional investors, such as pension funds, hedge funds or endowments and foundations * Retirement plans, such as 401(k) and defined benefit plans * 529 college savings plans * Bank deposits (checking, savings, CDs, money markets) * Directly held mutual fund shares, fixed income, money market funds * Real assets such as real estate, art, automobiles and jewelry

Resiliency Amidst COVID: How This Black Business Reemerged As A Global Tech Solution For Minority Small Business Needs Chase For Business Is Focused On Helping Startup Business Gologic Solutions Give Back To The Small Business Community The coronavirus pandemic caused unprecedented loss for Patrice Darby. Her first business, GoNanny, a childcare service, closed in 2020 due to COVID-19, leaving her battling grief after losing something she worked tirelessly to build.

Virtual OZY Fest in partnership with HBCU’s Clubhouse OZY Media recently announced that OZY Fest, its one-of-a-kind festival of great entertainment, interactive experiences and big conversations, will return on May 15-16 as a virtual event, after the 2020 festival was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Headliners include musicians Chance the Rapper, Sevyn Streeter, Big Freedia, Marc Rebillet and Kat Cunning; comedians Tig Notaro, Maz Jobrani and Aida Rodriguez; chefs Marcus Samuelsson, Tom Colicchio and Ming Tsai; thought leaders Dr. Anthony Fauci, Mark Cuban, Condoleezza Rice, Malcolm Gladwell, Jim Cramer, Revd. City Colleges of Chicago Announces New Scholarship Program to Support CPS Graduates in Becoming CPS Teachers SEED (Supporting Emerging Educators Development) Scholarship Will Support CPS Graduates Preparing for a Teaching Career Through Teach Chicago Tomorrow Pathways Beginning This Fall Chicago – City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) Chancellor Juan Salgado today announced the SEED Scholarship to increase the pipeline of talented and diverse educators in Chicago. Starting this fall, the SEED Scholarship (Supporting Emerging Educators Development) will support CPS graduates participating in Teach Chicago Tomorrow, a new partnership initiative that creates a clear path from high school to college and back to CPS as a full-time teacher. The scholarship is designed to cover most, if not all, City Colleges tuition, books, and class materials for participating students.

“Diversifying our talent pool of teachers is a top priority for our schools and underscores our deep commitment to equity across Chicago,” said Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot.

“The City is building its own recruitment pathway of high-quality teachers of color to return to CPS classrooms and educate the next generation of our city’s young people.

I applaud City Colleges’ partnership with CPS to bring its resources to bear to meet a critical workforce need in Chicago.”

Chancellor Salgado added, “The cost of college can no longer be a barrier to our students’ aspirations, in particular the many Black, Latinx and low-income students we serve at City Colleges of Chicago. Our investment in SEED joins a growing number of financial supports we’ve developed to ensure City Colleges students can access and complete a college credential. It will help transform our city, creating a more diverse teacher workforce and a more inclusive economy.”

The SEED Scholarship launches this fall for CPS graduates from the classes of 2020 and 2021, and includes undocumented students and students from CPS charter schools who apply and enroll in Teach Chicago Tomorrow.

City Colleges will offer up to $3,000 in individual scholarship dollars each year to at least 100 students, with the scholarship amount based on the number of credits taken. Students taking 6-8 credits per semester will receive a stipend of $750/semester, students taking 9-11 credits will receive a stipend of $1,000/semester, and students taking 12 or more credits will receive a stipend of $1,500/ semester.

The scholarship will be renewable up to three years.

Students can also apply for other scholarships on top of SEED. “As a CPS graduate who began my career as a CPS teacher, I can personally attest to the importance of diverse teacher representation on students’ social-emotional well-being and academic progress,” said CPS CEO Dr. Janice K. Jackson. “A growing body of research shows the positive impact of having a diverse teacher workforce on students of color and we are fully committed to building a more diverse teacher pipeline through innovative partnerships and programs, like Teach Chicago Tomorrow. This new scholarship is a critical investment in our students that helps reduces barriers for participation, and it is another step forward in creating a more equitable future for our city.”

in education, human and natural sciences and serves as the host campus for the SEED Scholarship and Teach Chicago Tomorrow program. Students are able to take their general education courses across all seven of the City Colleges. “As we look at supporting new teachers, we must recognize our responsibility to give them the nourishment they need to grow in their craft,” said Truman College President Shawn Jackson, a former CPS student, teacher and principal himself. “The SEED Scholarship will allow us to provide an investment in aspiring teachers – the seeds we plant now will be the teachers of tomorrow.”

Students who are accepted to receive the SEED Scholarship will be placed in one of two tracks: Pathways Partnership or Emerging Educator, both of which further Teach Chicago Tomorrow’s mission to support homegrown educators. After acceptance into the SEED Scholarship, students will complete a City Colleges of Chicago application.

Through the Teach Chicago Tomorrow Pathways Partnership, students begin by earning an associate degree through City Colleges and then earn their bachelor’s degree by completing the second two years of college as an Illinois State University student. Throughout the program, intensive support will be provided to help them successfully navigate the pathway to becoming a teacher.

The Emerging Educator track will put students on a pathway to complete education coursework at City Colleges, and transfer to a four-year institution to complete their studies. Students recruited for this track will aspire

to become a teacher, but may not be sure of subject or grade level, or wish to teach outside of the elementary or Special Education track. The coursework and pacing for the Emerging Educator track allow a student to attend full- or part-time. SEED Scholars who subsequently earn an Illinois Professional Educator License will have priority placement for a full-time teaching job in CPS schools.

Illinois has seen a significant decline in Black and Latinx students earning education degrees, despite more Black and Latinx students graduating college than ever before. According to a CPS analysis of data from the Illinois Board of Higher Education over the past decade in Illinois, there’s been a 54 percent decline in African American students earning education degrees and 28 percent decline in Latinx students earning education degrees.

According to surveys, approximately ten percent of CPS high school students indicate they are interested in working in education, but far fewer go on to become educators. The SEED Scholarship and Teach Chicago Tomorrow creates a clear pathway to become a teacher along with structured supports to help students achieve their goals.

CPS hires approximately 140 CPS graduates as teachers per year, and is setting a long-term goal to triple the number of CPS grads hired annually to more than 500. Based on current trends, most of those new homegrown teachers will be Black or Latinx.

Approximately half of all Medicare beneficiaries live on incomes below $26,200 a year. For those who qualify, Medicare’s special programs can save them thousands of dollars annually on their premiums, medications, deductibles, and co-pays.

Black-Owned Production Company Awards Antonio de Graffenreaidt $20,000 to Develop Unscripted Series on Racism in America TLG Motion Pictures (“Hoarders”), founded by American film and television producer Courtney LeMarco, recently announced that it has selected Antonio de Graffenreaidt as winner of The Big Pitch, a national competition providing opportunity for Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) with a strong interest in film, production, and content creation. The 34-year-old Los Angeles, California resident has been awarded a $20,000 Service Grant toward the development of his unscripted series concept Culture Shock. de Graffenreaidt’s Culture Shock is an unscripted series that tells the timely story of racism in America. An intense social experiment, Culture Shock will invite people with vastly different world views and backgrounds, like a Black Lives Matter activist and a Proud Boy, to switch places and live in each other’s shoes for two weeks. At the end of each episode, participants of Culture Shock’s social experiment will come together to discuss what they learned.

“I believe Culture Shock can be a unique opportunity to hold up a mirror to the racial injustices happening in America right now,” said de Graffenreaidt. “As a Black man, I realize racial inequity and violence on Black and brown bodies is nothing new. As a Black filmmaker, shining a light on marginalized stories and encouraging difficult conversations around racism through my work is my way of dismantling white supremacy.
