KAZOOM FEST TO BRING MULTICULTURAL KAZOOM KIDS’ iSTORYBOOKS TO LIFE ONSTAGE KaZoom Kids Books (www.kazoomkidsbooks.com), an interactive digital publishing company dedicated to bringing greater diversity to children’s literature, recently announced KaZoom Fest, a collaboration with the Harlem School of the Arts (HSA).

HSA’s youngest theater and acting students, and some of their parents, will bring three KaZoom iStorybook titles to life as three short plays complete with theatrical performances, music, and choreography provided by Harlem School of the Arts’ theater, music and dance departments. The three stories are Taking the E Train and Everybody Loves Cake by Lapacazo Sandoval, and Alyssa Marissa and Her Magical Hair by Angela Williams. Both authors will attend the event and discuss their work prior to the show. Representing and immersing children of color in stories and the arts is an aim that resonates deeply with both KaZoom and Harlem School of the Arts.

ASSOCIATION OF BLACK CARDIOLOGISTS ANNOUNCES NEW PRESIDENT, BOARD CHAIR AND EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEMBERS The Association of Black Cardiologists (ABC), an inclusive organization dedicated to eliminating disparities in cardiovascular diseases, has recently installed John M. Fontaine, MD, MBA, FACC, FHRS as its 17th President and Cheryl Pegus, MD, MPH as its first woman Chair of the Board of Directors.

Among other notable accomplishments, Dr. Fontaine is a Professor of Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine and Director of Arrhythmia Services. He possesses an MBA in Healthcare Management and is a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma International Honor Society. He is board certified in cardiovascular medicine and clinical cardiac electrophysiology.

Now, almost six years later, Daniels is developing a program to help people navigate the healing process after experiencing the loss of a loved one.

The Darren B. Easterling Center for Restorative Practices was founded in late 2016 by Daniels who wanted to redefine her sons legacy and foster healing for communities, like Englewood, that are hit the hardest by gun violence and incarceration, according to Daniels.

“The organization is a behavioral health services organization established to resolve what we believe to be the core of gun violence which is unresolved trauma in our communities. More specifically, with our youth and we also are developing services to assist women who have experienced the loss of a loved one through gun violence or incarceration,” said Daniels.

The community healing program that the Darren B. Easterling Center for Restorative Practices is currently in the midst of creating will be based on the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) that was created to help South African people deal with the trauma they encountered while the country was under apartheid, a government enforced racial segregation plan in place from 1948 to 1994, according to the TRC.

“The Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established postapartheid, I believe in 1996, with the belief that there had to be healing in the land in order for the systematic changes that were being implemented post-apartheid to be effective. The people had to be healed from what they had experienced. That’s our objective as well and the intention is to start in the community of Englewood which I think is one of the hardest hit communities in the city,” said Daniels.

Other organizations have already begun to take notice of the Darren B. Easterling Center for Restorative Practices and Daniels plans to implement South African style healing in Englewood.

The Good News Experiment, a Boston-based initiative that recognizes neighborhood innovators with

stories that are publicly distributed, has named Daniels as an honoree of their organization for her exceptional commitment to delivering restorative healing to local communities impacted by gun violence, according to a press release from The Good News Experiment.

“It’s an honor for someone to see the vision before it has even manifested.

For someone to look at the work that is just an idea in the planning stages right now...I find it an honor to be acknowledged and to have the support that we have received to manifest this vision for healing and for forgiveness in a community that deserves to have this healing experience,” said Daniels.

Collins’ Plan for Illinois Council on Women and Girls Moves Forward SPRINGFIELD, IL – To continue pushing for equality and

break down the social and economic barriers that continue to hold back women, State Senator Jacqueline Collins advanced a new measure that would focus state resources on researching and implementing policies to help women and girls in Illinois.

Senate Bill 3402 would create the Illinois Council on Women and Girls, a group that would advise the governor and the General Assembly on policy issues with a female focus.

on its policy recommendations by June 30 and Dec. 31 of each year. The Senate State Government Committee approved the measure recently.

“The Illinois Council on Women and Girls would focus on finding those areas of systemic disadvantage or bias in our policies and seek realistic ways of reforming them,” Collins said. “I urge my colleagues in the Senate to take this step toward knocking down the barriers that stand in the way of our sisters and daughters.”

The students of the “EmpoWEred” group at Morgan Park High School are an example of how making small changes can bring a positive impact to the local community as they volunteer their time at a local retirement home and the Chicago Food Depository as part of the WE Schools campaign, WE Volunteer Now. In addition to their work in the community, they are devoted to an ongoing passion project—an art piece that spells out the word “refugee,” with each letter decorated with a different theme.

The final creation will be unveiled at a schoolwide campaign, WE Are Silent, where students take a vow of silence to shine a light on young people fighting for their basic human rights and stand together as one.

Upcoming Health and Medical Career Conference for Young People

n April 21, the I Am Abel Foundation (IAAF) is hosting their second annual Health and Medical Careers Citywide Conference from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and also their third annual Preparing Our Successors in Medicine Student Gala at 6:30 p.m. in the Searle Conference Center on the fifth floor of the Rush University Medical Center.

The IAAF is a nonprofit organization that works to bridge socioeconomic gaps and promotes achievement among underrepresented minority youth in Chicago so that every child can have a chance to achieve their goals, according to the IAAF website.

One of the programs the IAAF offers is the medical mentoring program that connects young people with physicians and medical professional that can help them prepare for a health career.

“I’m a doctor that was born and raised in the Englewood community.

My entire childhood I was dreaming of becoming a physician but honestly, mentors were not around, said LaMenta Conway, MD, MPH, founder of IAAF. “There are at least hundreds of thousands of kids who are just like me in Englewood who want to become a doctor and have no clue how to make it happen.”

At the conference on April 21, Students will learn about medical

curriculum, admission criteria for pre-med, nursing, and allied health, attend workshops on navigating careers in healthcare, and network with physicians and other medical professionals. There will be an opportunity to tour the anatomy lab at Rush University where medical students study the human body, according to a press release about the upcoming IAAF conference and gala.

“The day starts with a city-wide conference that targets inner city kids who are interested in careers in medicine. We have actually expanded what that looks like to include nursing and allied health. It’s a full day conference that is free and will teach young people what they need to do to navigate this intricate pathway toward medicine. So if that is something that young people are interested in, which we are hoping that they are, they can register on our website,” said Conway.

After the conference the Preparing Our Successors in Medicine Student Gala will begin. The Gala will celebrate the students who were recently accepted into the IAAF’s competitive medical mentoring program.

“They do a very intense year that is almost like a boot camp where they are indoctrinated into the world of medicine. That evening the Gala is going to be a celebration of all of those young people,” said Conway. “We went to all kinds of schools throughout the City of

Chicago Park District and Lincoln Park Zoo Present Family Nature Days Series this Spring

he Chicago Park District and Lincoln Park Zoo announce the creation of Family Nature Days, an interactive, nature-based program for the entire family. Lincoln Park Zoo will host the nature play series at nine Chicago parks across the city, through November 3. Park locations include Bosley Park, Cornell Park, River Park, Lincoln Park Zoo, Smith Park, Washington Park, West Pullman Park, Shabbona Park and Calumet Park. All of the pop-up nature play dates are admission free.

Another student, Kiarra Pearson, is a junior at YWLCS and has already been working with her mentor Anne Pramaggiore, the CEO of ComEd. “Since I met Anne she has been in my ear helping me to prepare for college and trying to get me into different programs to make my resume look really nice,” said Pearson. “I want to come out of my senior year with straight A’s so I can get as much money as I possibly can to go to college.”

Both girls are thankful for what they have learned from their mentors and the impact that YWLCS has had on their futures.

“Young Women’s has really impacted my life to be more socially aware of what goes on around me and be aware that people do look at me and see what I’m doing,” said Kennedy.

The YWLCS was founded in 1999 and is the only all-girls STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) charter school in Chicago. There are nearly 350 young women who attend YWLCS and the school boasts a 100 percent graduation and college acceptance rate, according to a press release from the YWLCS. “It was my goal when I came here to revitalize our mission which says that we inspire urban girls to engage in rigorous college preparatory learning in a small school environment that focuses on Science

Technology and Math,” said Dr. Vanesa Scott-Thompson, principal of YWLCS. In the fall, YWLCS will introduce two new engineering classes, introduction to engineering and principals of engineering, that will make them a full STEM school, according to Scott-Thompson.

“I am so committed to making sure we live up to our mission and to make sure the girls have science, technology, engineering, and math because it impacts every part of our lives and if you think about it, people who are working in these fields do not look like us and they are primarily men so I’m trying to make sure we have a women’s pipeline,” said Scott-Thompson.

The school offers a mentor program that connects senior students with women working in STEM careers who commit to helping the students get prepared for college and providing them with support at least through their first two years of college, according to Scott-Thompson.

THE GIFT IN THE STORM

W

e have all encountered experiences in our life that were not only difficult to meet but difficult to work through. For many of us, these experiences become a sort of dark night of the soul. The walk through the vortex of darkness and uncertainty has led many of us to believe that we could not make it through.

Then, low and behold, the storms ceases, the clouds open up, the darkness disappears, and there you stand wet…but on the other side of the storm.

We sometimes forget that challenges such as these bring with them a transformational quality; a transformational quality that we are not only supposed to learn to endure but be better from.

Remember Joseph the Dreamer?

He had it all: heavenly and patriarchal favor, an attainable vision, confidence, giftedness, the ability to serve and support others. He also had to learn how to withstand the darkness of the storm if he was to become all that he saw himself being.

Whether the challenge was being betrayed, being celebrated, being wrongly accused, being unjustly imprisoned, or being expected to know how to deal with favor and leadership, Joseph had to go through the storm before he was ready to move into the station that leads from the pit to the palace. So must you and I. Microwaveable mentalities and thirty minute total home remodels would have us believe that the dust will not even settle before we awake fresh, clean, and brand new. While we may be game for a reality makeover, we cannot forget that greatness is often grown, weathered, and discovered through the difficulties of life.

Rushing through the storm increases the likelihood of incident. Keep moving but take advantage of the time to learn about your strength, power, capacity, and capabilities. Darkness can draw us closer to the Light, if we understand the rhythm of creation. Use the time as a means by which to experience a closer walk with God and calm a raging sea.

oday is truly a day that the Lord has made and the more complicated the world gets, the simpler the Word of God is to understand. Often, and do I mean often, I get reminded of the power and seductive nature of ego, pride and the need to control. Or, should I say the need to be in control?

Letting go and letting God is a simple concept to say and dare I say, an easy concept to understand? Yet why is it so hard to do? We all know people who can quote scripture backwards and forwards, yet have no faith. We know Christian control freaks who must have the last say and who must be right all the time. I know I sometimes get caught up in constantly trying to rationalize circumstances in order to explain the events of the day, any day, as if by some miracle of intelligence, I am the authority.

It is more often than not, at these times that if I’m blessed and open to receiving the Holy Spirit, that I then get a chance to see the miracles, the nuances, the essence of my life. I am not in control, never have been, never will be and, it’s okay.

Giving your life to Christ requires a constant vigil against taking credit or assessing blame. When you focus on service in the name of the Lord, you really do get a chance to see things from a different perspective. You see the service I’m referring to is the selfless kind that neither seeks nor expects reward. The mere act speaks for itself. How much more simple does it have to be? Christ even suggests that God can see into your heart and know your intention. Love God and love your neighbor as you love yourself. It’s so simple, it’s incredible. It’s so simple that if you’re not careful, you’ll miss it altogether. I know I have.

Now on this day, or any day that God has made, let’s take this simple concept and apply it to a very complex world. Behavior should have parameters. Actions should have purpose. We know they have consequences. Intent should always be uppermost in your mind. Now, let’s look back over your yesterday. See how easy it was from the time you got up, until the time you laid down, to succumb to jealousy, pettiness, cruelty, envy and the like? It takes work to be humble, loving, giving and a source of truth all day, every day. It takes willpower and you know the will I’m talking about.

I believe the calling of every Christian is to try. It’s the effort that God expects. It’s the intent He wants. If you’re first seeking the kingdom of heaven, then that quest should have some direct bearing on what you do today, how you perform, what you say

and certainly whom you hang out with. I’m fortunate to have known people I believe were truly angels walking. I really do believe there are saints among us and we ignore them all the time because we’re too busy pursuing the world, rather than pursuing God. However, from these living breathing angels, I’ve learned that the battle is not over until you know you’ve already won. The quest is not over until you are born, born again, die and ultimately live forever.”

There’s a line in the movie “Gladiator” that says, “What we do in life…echoes in eternity.” It’s kind of nice to know that Jesus already took care of that eternity thing. All I have to do is get through this life thing. If truth be told, I think I’ve got the easy part. It may not make sense on the surface, but when you stop and think about it, it really is simple. See me. See God. I can do this. I’ve just got to let go, one day at a time, one hour at a time, one person at a time. Try it, just once, try it.

STEPHEN OLIVER COBB® other than authorized use as set forth above constitutes unauthorized use, counterfeiting, of Secured Party's common-law copyrighted property, contractually binds User, renders this Copyright Notice a Security Agreement wherein User is debtor and Stephen Oliver Cobb ® is Secured Party, and signifies that User: (1) grants Secured Party a security interest in all of User's assets, land, and personal property, and all of User's interest in assets, land, and personal property, in the sum certain amount of $500,000.00 per each occurrence of use of the common-law-copyrighted trade- name/trade-mark STEPHEN OLIVER COBB®, as well as for each and every occurrence of use of any and all derivatives of, and variations in the spelling of, STEPHEN OLIVER COBB®, plus costs, plus triple damages; (2) authenticates this Security Agreement wherein User is debtor and Stephen Oliver Cobb ® is Secured Party, and wherein User pledges all of User's assets, land, consumer goods, farm products, inventory, equipment, money, investment property, commercial tort claims, letters of credit, letter-of-credit rights, chattel paper, instruments, deposit accounts, accounts, documents, and general intangibles, and all User's interest in all such foregoing property, now owned and hereafter acquired, now existing and hereafter arising, and wherever located, as collateral for securing User's contractual obligation in favor of Secured Party for User's unauthorized use of Secured Party's common-law-copyrighted property; (3) consents and agrees with Secured Party's filing of a UCC Financing Statement in the UCC filing office, as well as in any county recorder's office, wherein User is debtor and Stephen Oliver Cobb ® is Secured Party; (4) consents and agrees that said UCC Financing Statement described above in paragraph "(3)'' is a continuing financing statement, and further consents and agrees with Secured Party's filing of any continuation statement necessary for maintaining Secured Party's perfected security interest in all of User's property and interest in property, pledged as collateral in this Security Agreement and described above in paragraph "(2)," until User's contractual obligation theretofore incurred has been fully satisfied; (5) consents and agrees with Secured Party's filing of any UCC Financing Statement, as described above in paragraphs "(3)" and "(4)," as well as the filing of any Security Agreement, as described above in paragraph "(2),'' in the UCC filing office, as well as in any county recorder's office; (6) consents and agrees that any and all such filings described in paragraphs "(4)" and "(5)" above are not, and may not be considered, bogus, and that User will not claim that any such filing is bogus; (7) waives all defenses; and (8) appoints Secured Party as Authorized Representative for User, effective upon User's default re User's contractual obligations in favor of Secured Party as set forth below under "Payment Terms" and "Default Terms," granting Secured Party full authorization and power for engaging in any and all actions on behalf of User including, but not limited by, authentication of a record on behalf of User, as Secured Party, in Secured Party's sole discretion, deems appropriate, and User further consents and agrees that this appointment of Secured Party as Authorized Representative for User, effective upon User's default, is irrevocable and coupled with a security interest.

User further consents and agrees with all of the following additional terms of Self-executing Contract/Security Agreement in Event of Unauthorized Use: Payment Terms: In accordance with fees for unauthorized use of STEPHEN OLIVER COBB® as set forth above, User hereby consents and agrees that User shall pay Secured Party all unauthorized-use fees in full within ten (10) days of the date User is sent Secured Party's invoice, hereinafter "Invoice," itemizing said fees. Default Terms: In event of non-payment in full of all unauthorized-use fees by User within ten (10) days of date Invoice is sent, User shall be deemed in default and: (a) all of User's property and property pledged as collateral by User, as set forth in above in paragraph "(2)," immediately becomes, i.e. is, property of Secured Party; (b) Secured Party is appointed User's Authorized Representative as set forth above in paragraph "(8)"; and (c) User consents and agrees that Secured Party may take possession of, as well as otherwise dispose of in any manner that Secured Party, in Secured Party's sole dis-

cretion, deems appropriate, including, but not limited by, sale at auction, at any time following User's default, and without further notice, any and all of User's property and interest, described above in paragraph "(2)," formerly pledged as collateral by User, now property of Secured Party, in respect of this "Self-executing Contract/Security Agreement in Event of Unauthorized Use," that Secured Party, again in Secured Party's sole discretion, deems appropriate. Terms for Curing Default: Upon event of default, as set forth above under "Default Terms," irrespective of any and all of User's former property and interest in property, described above in paragraph "(2)," in the possession of, as well as disposed of by, Secured Party, as authorized above under "Default Terms," User may cure User's default only re the remainder of User's said former property and interest property, formerly pledged as collateral that is neither in the possession of, nor otherwise disposed of by, Secured Party within twenty (20) days of date of User's default only by payment in full. Terms of Strict Foreclosure: User's non-payment in full of all unauthorizeduse fees itemized in Invoice within said twenty- (20) day period for curing default as set forth above under "Terms for Curing Default" authorizes Secured Party's immediate nonjudicial strict foreclosure on any and all remaining former property and interest in property, formerly pledged as collateral by User, now property of Secured Party, which is not in the possession of, nor otherwise disposed of by, Secured Party upon expiration of said twenty- (20) day default-curing period.
