CHICAGO’S LEADING WOMEN JOIN FORCES TO EXEMPLIFY TRUE GIRL POWER Young Women’s Leadership Charter School of Chicago (YWLCS)’s 10th Annual Girl Power Luncheon on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 featured Cook County Commissioner Bridget Gainer, City Clerk Anna Valencia, MWRD Commissioner Kari Steele and a dynamic Student Showcase celebrating students’ accomplishments in the areas of robotics, engineering, arts, science and math.

YWLCS’ Girl Power annual fundraiser celebrated the achievements of an extraordinary group of YWLCS students in science, math, technology and arts, along with influential corporate, community leaders and prominent women in STEM fields.

Commissioner Gainer, a panelist at the event, shared her advice for overcoming adversity in school and in the workplace.

CHICAGO JOINS NATIONAL MOVEMENT TO END PROSTATE CANCER JOLIET, IL – ZERO - The End of Prostate Cancer joins forces with Advanced Urology Associates to host the ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk this June. The goal is to create Generation ZERO – the first generation of men free of prostate cancer. Participants from the Chicago area will run and walk together on June 2 to fight a disease that takes the life of an American man every 18 minutes.

Chicago joins 40+ communities across the nation as part of the ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk series. Run/ Walk participants will receive tech shirts, free food and prizes, and the opportunity to connect with others who are impacted by prostate cancer. Funds raised for this year’s Run/Walk event will go toward national efforts to provide research for new treatments, to enhance patient support resources, and to educate men and families about prostate cancer. REDLINED BY CHICAGO AUTHOR LINDA GARTZ Linda Gartz’s REDLINED: A Memoir of Race, Change, and Fractured Community in 1960s Chicago was recently published on April 3. Linda Gartz is a six-time Emmy® award-honored television producer, essay writer, and native of Chicago’s West Garfield Park. In her book, Redlined, she exposes the discriminatory lending policies known as redlining, the FHA’s former nationwide practice of denying mortgages based upon race and ethnicity, in a riveting story of a Chicago community fractured by racial turmoil as experienced by one white family who lived through it. As blacks moved deeper into Chicago’s West Side during the 1960s, whites fled by the thousands.

But Linda’s parents, Fred and Lil, chose to stay in their neighborhood, even as redlining undermined property values and forced African-Americans into predatory loans.

Based on a treasure trove of letters and diaries, Redlined combines Gartz’s poignant personal experiences with those of her parents to share a unique perspective of a racially changing America in the 1960s and beyond. 99-Year-Old Friend of Dr. King Shares Memories of Civil Rights in Chicago

imuel Black recently spoke at the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel in Hyde Park to honor the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination. Black worked closely with King during the civil rights movement and was instrumental in orchestrating King’s first Chicago appearance in April of 1956 where he gave a moving speech at the same venue.

Even at 99-years-old, Black still has vivid memories of meeting and working with King. He talked about the first time he saw King and how he immediately connected with the movement King was leading. Shortly after seeing King speak on television, Black traveled to Montgomery, AL, to meet him.

“I went to Montgomery and I met him and other people who had participated in his marches. From that point forward I followed Dr. King reverently because I was tired and I www.thechicagocitizen.com

wasn’t the only one that was tired, there were Hyde Parkers that were tired, there we other people across the country that were tired, but we were not too tired to walk behind this great man and I have never forgotten the power of that voice that told the world that we were tired of racism, segregation, and inequality,” said Black.

Born Dec. 7, 1918, in Birmingham, AL, Black and his family migrated to the south side of Chicago when he was eight months old. He remembers growing up in racially restrictive housing covenants which led to overcrowding and poverty in black neighborhoods.

“That experience carried me to work with Dr. King. and when he came to Chicago to bring attention to housing I was very much involved because housing had always been a factor in the north and in Chicago specifically which was the most segregated northern city in the country at the time,” said Black.

King was known for his peaceful

methods of protesting and resisting racial inequalities. He encouraged all of his followers to never engage in violence no matter the circumstances. This admirable quality was something that made Black worry about King’s safety.

“In the south, it worked because people expected blacks to fight back, they didn’t know what to do when they didn’t. I always worried how long he would be safe in this social system and he was attacked, not just once. His house was burnt, he was stabbed by a woman in Harlem, so I kept always worrying that his attitude and his behavior would give someone that opportunity to assassinate him, and that did end up happening April 4th, 1968,” said Black.

The day that King died, Black was going to visit his sick father in the hospital. He said that he was so angry and hurt to hear the news of King’s assassination. “It was a painful day,” said Black.

City Colleges of Chicago Approves Plan to Lower Tuition for Part-Time Students Continued from page 1

A

recent meeting of the City Colleges of Chicago Board of Trustees approved a new tuition equity adjustment plan that will make education more accessible to working students and families across Chicago. The newly approved tuition rates will take effect during this years summer term.

The new program institutes a fair percredit-hour rate for part-time students while keeping full-time tuition rates the same, according to a press release from City Colleges of Chicago.

“The tuition plan recognizes that we have many working students who need to attend college part-time, and it treats them fairly, charging them for the credits they take, no more, no less,” said City Colleges of Chicago Chancellor, Juan Salgado. “At the same time, the plan continues to incentivize students to attend full-time and complete more quickly.”

City Colleges of Chicago consists of seven colleges throughout the Chicago area, including: Richard J. Daley College; Kennedy-King College; Malcolm X College; Olive-Harvey College; Harry S Truman College; Wilbur Wright College and Harold Washington College.

Before the Board of Trustees met to cast their votes, a community meeting was held to show support for the proposed tuition adjustment plan and discuss how to make sure all City College of Chicago students know how to access and take advantage of

the proposed plan.

Under the new fair tuition plan, indistrict students will pay a single per-credit rate of $146 for up to 12 credits. There will be no additional cost for credits taken beyond 12 hours meaning that a full-time in-district student’s semester cost would be capped at $1,752, one dollar less than today.

The new structure reduces the cost to take a single class by 25 percent, according to a press release from City Colleges of Chicago.

City Colleges of Chicago is and will remain the only community college system in the state that does not charge student fees, according to a press release from City Colleges of Chicago.

At the meeting that proceeded the Board of Trustees vote, students from City Colleges of Chicago and various community organizations, including the Metropolitan Family Services, Pilsen Neighbors, Partnership for College Completion, YearUp and Chicago Commons, were present to show their support for the new tuition plan.

“Many of the students we work with in early childhood are attending City Colleges to advance their education and career options while also balancing work and family responsibilities,” said Edgar Ramirez, CEO & President, Chicago Commons, in a written statement. “We appreciate that City Colleges has listened to the concerns of part-time students and are making adjustments to their tuition structure to better support working families.”

National Art Contest to Design Silver Coin-Shaped Medallion Honoring African American WWI Sgt. Henry Johnson ALBANY, NY -- One of the nation’s oldest rare

coin shops is seeking artists from across the nation to design a silver coin-shaped medallion honoring African American World War I hero Sgt. Henry Johnson.

Ferris Coin Co. of Albany, N.Y. is offering two prizes of $1,000 each to the winning designs for the obverse and reverse sides of a 1.5 in (39 mm) coin-shaped silver medallion. The deadline for submissions is April 17, 2018.

“It is our hope that through this competition and the medallion it produces, more Americans learn the story of Sgt. Henry Johnson and his sacrifices to this nation,” said Geoffrey Demis, co-owner of Ferris Coin. “With humility, we contribute to the efforts of generations who have worked tirelessly to keep Sgt. Johnson’s legacy alive and to see his valor given the recognition

due.”

On June 5, 1917, Albany resident Henry Johnson enlisted in the first African American unit in the U.S. Army to engage in combat in World War I. In May 1918 Johnson heroically fought off a German raid in hand-to-hand combat, saving the life of a fellow soldier. For his bravery, Johnson received France’s highest award for valor, becoming the first American to receive this distinction. Sgt. Johnson returned to Albany in 1919. Despite having been wounded 21 times, he received no honors from his home country.

He died, destitute, in 1929, in his mid-30s. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Winnie Mandela to Receive State Funeral on April 14

(GIN) - Anti-apartheid campaigner and former wife of Nelson Mandela, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela will be honoured with a state funeral later this month, Cyril Ramaphosa South Africa’s president recently announced.

The funeral will be held on April 14. An official memorial service is being held today.

Madikizela-Mandela died on April 2, after a long illness. She was 81. Tributes to the anti-apartheid icon filled the South African radio air waves as news of her untimely passing reached the far corners of the nation and the continent.

Spiceworks Study Reveals 40 Percent of Large Businesses Will Implement Intelligent Assistants or Chatbots by 2019

S

piceworks recently announced the results of a new survey examining the adoption and usage of intelligent assistants and AI chatbots in the workplace. The results show that within the next 12 months, 40 percent of large businesses – those with more than 500 employees – expect to implement one or more intelligent assistants or AI chatbots

on company-owned devices, compared to 25 percent of mid-size companies and 27 percent of small businesses. The findings indicate that although adoption is on the rise, some organizations are holding back due to a lack of use cases in the workplace and privacy concerns.

Black Women’s Roundtable Releases Its Fifth Annual Report

Mazda Introduces Updated 2019 CX-3 at 2018 New York International Auto Show

M

azda Motor Corporation recently introduced its updated, refined Mazda CX-3. Additionally, the Mazda KAI concept and SKYACTIV-X engine made their North American auto show debuts, highlighting Mazda’s design and engineering prowess as it moves toward its next-generation of vehicles.

In a recent speech, Mazda Motor Corporation Global Chief Marketing Officer and Mazda North American Operations CEO Masahiro Moro discussed Mazda’s commitment to the U.S. with Mazda Toyota Manufacturing, U.S.A., Inc., the new plant scheduled to go online in 2021. He also introduced the updated Mazda CX-3 subcompact crossover SUV before journalists at the New York International Auto Show, held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.

The new CX-3’s interior has undergone significant improvements, most notably the adoption of an electronic parking brake that frees up space and allows for a significant increase in storage space. Additional improvements include a smoother, more efficient and more refined SKYACTIV-G 2.0 gasoline engine, available full-leather seating surfaces, improved NVH characteristics and redesigned seats that support a more comfortable position. Yet, Mazda CX-3 continues to possess uncommonly good driving dynamics and keenly updated design elements that complement what is already a

compelling package.

Finally, Mazda displayed the Mazda KAI concept and SKYACTIV-X engine. KAI, which means “pioneer” in Japanese, portend Mazda’s KODO—Soul of Motion design direction, eschewing rhythm motion of the design language for cleaner lines, surface-based reflections and a “less-is-more” approach to creating a simultaneous sense of excitement and elegance. It is joined by the SKYACTIV-X engine, the world’s first commercially available gasoline compression-ignition engine. The KAI and SKYACTIV-X signal Mazda’s future design and technology directions.

Called Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030, in which Mazda is aiming

to reduce its CO2 emissions by 50 percent from 2010 levels by 2030. SKYACTIV-X will serve as a building block in that strategy, with it expected to be 20- to 30-percent more efficient than today’s SKYACTIV-G engines. It will be available in Mazda vehicles starting in 2019.

SKYACTIV-X is part of a greater initiative in line with Mazda’s “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030” long-term vision for technology development. Mazda aims to use the fundamental appeal of the automobile - driving pleasure - to inspire people, enrich society and help bring about a beautiful earth.

Are you overdue for a raise or promotion?

Exhibiting passive-aggressive behavior and dimming your light so others won’t feel uncomfortable are others.

Skin of Color Society Reaches New Heights as an International Organization Dedicated to Promoting Excellence in Skin of Color Dermatology GENEVA, IL - The Skin of Color Society

(SOCS), an international professional organization of physicians dedicated to promoting excellence in skin of color dermatology, reports record levels of organizational growth in terms of membership, mentorship, research, educational initiatives and media outreach.

At its recent annual business meeting held in conjunction with the 2018 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology, SOCS President Seemal R. Desai, MD, reviewed 2017-2018 highlights including: Professional membership has doubled since 2015, and has grown to 436 members from 29 countries around the world (up from 21 countries in 2017), with a sharp rise in membership among residents and research fellows.

The SOCS has increased engagement with medical students through the medical

school awareness program, helping them secure residencies with a year-by-year guide available on www.skinofcolorsociety.org.

SOCS has expanded its skin of color dermatology mentorship program to include a record 78 mentors from 10 countries who are available to share their expertise with dermatology residents and young dermatologists.

SOCS dermatologists participated in a successful inaugural partnership with Procter & Gamble on its Science Behind Symposium, involving mentors Lynn McKinley-Grant, MD and Susan C. Taylor, MD and mentees Nada Elbuluk, MD, MSc and Pooja Sodha, MD. The 2018 SOCS Research Award was given to Shawn Kwatra, MD Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, for his project: “Molecular Basis of Itch in African Americans.”

Contest to Design Medallion Honoring Sgt. Henry Johnson Continued from page 3 to his country when he was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart in 1996 and the Distinguished Service Cross in 2002. In 2015 he was awarded the National Medal of Honor -- the nation’s highest military honor -- by President Barack Obama.

“The story of Sgt. Henry Johnson is both inspiring and devastating,” said Jim Naughter, co-owner of Ferris Coin Co. “He was a highly decorated hero abroad, but he died destitute in his own country without receiving the full honors and support he was due in his lifetime.

I imagine that contradiction might provoke a bold statement from some of the artist contestants.”

DESIGN CONTEST Though this contest is not affiliated with the U.S. Mint in any way, it is modeled after the mint’s long-standing tradition of coin design competitions to recognize important figures and events in the nation’s history.

“What we are commissioning is not a ‘coin’ in the official sense, because it will not display a currency denomination,” said Demis. “It will not be legal tender, but it will resemble a coin and it will be made from pure silver, which

is why we’re calling it a silver ‘coin-shaped medallion.’”

The obverse, or front, of the coin-shaped medallion should feature an accurate likeness of Sgt. Henry Johnson based on historical photographs in the public domain and should feature the following inscriptions: “Sgt. Henry Johnson,” “Enlisted 05 JUN 1917” and “Albany,

NY.” The design for the reverse side of the medallion is more open to artistic expression; according to the guidelines, artists should clearly and creatively interpret concepts such as duty, honor, sacrifice or civic responsibility.

Artists are further encouraged to symbolize a connection between Johnson’s commitment to duty and the civic duty each of us shares today in order to inspire forward thinking about our own community involvement.

The submission deadline is April 17. Contestants must be 18 or older to qualify.

Through the Distinguished Community Service Award contest, members of the community nominate their peers who have made outstanding contributions to the community in the areas of arts and history, social justice, education, or community organizing. The purpose of the award is to recognize an individual who has gone above and beyond the call of duty but has not received formal recognition or public thanks for their actions.

ou may be in a tight spot right now, however, your breakthrough is closer than you think. We all have those moments when our lives are so filled with confusion that we cannot tell up from down; so beset with pain that we cannot see in from out, and so full of frustration and hopelessness that we cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel. Then, we remember to stop and pray.

As people of faith, we recognize that prayer is essential. Prayer changes things. It gives us the strength to go forward. Jesus said, “I tell you, whatever you pray for believe that you have received it and it shall be yours.” In prayer, we set the soul like a trap to receive thoughts, guidance, and impulses of God. Prayer helps us adjust and prepare our mind and heart to receive God’s program.

Remember, if the Lord put you there, the Lord can bless you there. Like Abram, you sometimes have to leave your country and kindred and head to the place that God will show you. Even in the liminal space God has a plan for your life, a plan for your welfare and not for your harm. His plan is to give you a future with hope. As one writer said, “Those who are committed to being the light must be equally committed to the process of burning.” The good news is that God never leaves you alone.

Prayer changes things because prayer changes us. It has been said, “Pray as if everything depended upon God and work as if everything depended upon you.” So, Lift it up and Let it go.

Winnie Mandela to Receive State Funeral on April 14 Continued from page 3 new leadership of the ANC under Cyril Ramaphosa. “We’re going to surprise the country. I’ve told them they must watch this space. I’m back,” she declared.

Born in the rebellious district of Pondoland in the Eastern Cape, Nomzamo Winifred Zanyiwe Madikizela was one of nine children – six of them daughters – of two teachers and devout Methodists, Columbus Madikizela and his wife, Gertrude.

Madikizela-Mandela later moved to Johannesburg where she studied social work.

She met lawyer and anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela in 1957 and they married a year later and had two children together.

The marriage was short-lived‚ as he was arrested in 1963 and sentenced to life imprisonment for treason. Mandela was eventually released in 1990.

She was a strong single parent who raised two children while her “larger than life” husband was in prison. But this was a time that the ANC and the country overall were very “gendered”, spurring her struggle for women’s rights.

Winnie suffered her first major spell of imprisonment in May 1969, having been arrested supposedly for political agitation but more likely for being the wife of Nelson Mandela. Her treatment by police was appalling. Held for 17 months, most of it in solitary confinement, she was interrogated and kept awake for up to five days at a time.

Fainting, hallucinating and passing blood in her urine, she landed up in the prison hospital suffering from malnutrition.

She recognized the brutalizing effect the experience had on her, telling a television interviewer many years later: “I knew what it is to hate.”

The picture of her hand-in-hand with Mandela as he walked free from prison after 27 years, became one of the most recognizable symbols of the anti-apartheid struggle.

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu issued a statement: “May Mam’ uWinnie rest in peace and rise in glory.”

“Madikizela-Mandela refused to be bowed by the imprisonment of her husband,” said Tutu, “or the perpetual harassment of her family by security forces, detentions, bannings and banishment.”
