LOCKERS: NOT JUST FOR SCHOOL ANYMORE > P6
Seventh Annual Urban Prep Academies Commencement Ceremony This past Saturday, 252 graduates walked across the stage to receive their high school diplomas during Urban Prep’s Seventh-Annual Commencement Ceremony. For the seventh consecutive year, 100 percent of Urban Prep’s graduating class was accepted to fouryear colleges and universities. The ceremony included remarks by Urban Prep leaders, alumni and students, as well as video messages
and musical performances by the Bright Star Choir and Djembe African Drummers while awards for outstanding achievements were presented to select graduates, faculty and supporters. Urban Prep’s class of 2016 has received more 1,500 college admissions to 190 colleges and universities across the country. In total, this year’s seniors have been awarded more than $11 million in
scholarships and grants to date. The school, founded by Tim King and a group of African-American education, business and civic leaders, operates the country’s first network of charter public high schools for boys. Since opening its first school in 2006, 100% of Urban Prep’s graduates— all African American males, mostly from low-income families—have been admitted to college.
