any famous singers, poets, writers and actors protest and speak out about the mistreatment of black and brown people in this country and all over the world. Cyrus LeRoy Baldridge, born in 1889 was one such person. The University of Chicago’s Special Collections Research Center Gallery is hosting the Baldridge exhibit from now until September 27, 2016.

Baldridge was born in New York, but would start his career as an artist here in Chicago at the age of 10. He is based in Chicago and will be part of the UnitedHealthcare central and west region teams. Dr. Foucher will lead the clinical services, quality, and affordability initiatives and is responsible for supporting the Illinois commercial (employerissued insurance) and Medicare market businesses.

Dr. Foucher earned a Magna Cum Laude Bachelor of Science degree from Morehouse College (Phi Beta Kappa) in 1996 and earned his MD and MBA degrees in 2001 from UCLA’s Dual MD / MBA program where he was both a Mackenzie and Linden Scholarship awardee.

He served and completed residency at University of Illinois - Chicago in 2005 and is board certified in Family Medicine.

Dr. Foucher has extensive managed care experience, and has served as a physician executive/ Medical director with both Cigna and Accretive Health. He has a passion for population health, community-based care, and providing care for the underserved.

Dr. Foucher was born in Hyde Park and grew up in Maple Park, Ill. He currently lives in Hyde Park/North Kenwood.

Former Student and Famous Illustrator Celebrated in U OF C Special Collections Exhibit Continued from page 1

Most of the art work that is on display at U OF C is courtesy of Mrs. And Mr. Jay Mulberry. A former Chicago public school principal, professor and alumni of the University of Chicago, Jay Mulberry knew Baldridge very well. “When Cyrus retired, he moved to New Mexico and he lived next door to my family and we were very close,” said Mulberry.

Mulberry’s mother inherited Baldridge’s home upon his death and the contents of the home which included many illustrations.

Baldridge and his life partner, writer Caroline Singer were true humanitarians who shared many of the same political views often expressing them through her writing and his illustrations. Baldridge and Singer traveled the world together highlighting the mistreatment of marginalized people. They published several books and pamphlets. Baldridge worked with Langston Hughes to fight for the rights of blacks during the Harlem Renaissance period in New York and to gain a better perspective of the black experience Baldridge and Singer moved to Africa.

Baldridge moved about making change for oppressed people in the world like a quiet storm.

They moved across Africa mostly by foot from Sierra Leone to Ethiopia.

Birthed from this experience was a book written by Singer and Illustrated

by Baldridge, White Africans and Black. This experience left them both very committed to the rights of black Americans. Much of Baldridge’s work from his time in Africa and illustrations from his time at Opportunity, a journal of the Urban League, were donated to the historical Fisk University.

Baldridge also moved to India during the British rule where he fought for the rights of the people in India alongside Mahatma Gandhi . During World War I Baldridge traveled through an occupied France and Belgium as a war correspondent and illustrator.

Mulberry recalls Baldridge’s time in the war and says he was horrified by what he witnessed. “He was exposed to every aspect of the war and he became very involved in the anti-war movement,” said Mulberry.

“He was straight forward, he stayed very true to his beliefs.” Caroline Singer passed away in 1963. In the early 1970’s, Baldridge’s health began to decline and he couldn’t handle all that comes with aging and what he knew was to come. On June 6, 1977 Baldridge ended his own life with a pistol given to him in World War I.

TWO FIRSTGENERATION COLLEGE STUDENTS ACCEPTED TO HIGHLY SELECTIVE THIRD ANNUAL BEATING THE ODDS SUMMIT AT THE WHITE HOUSE On Tuesday, July 19, Nia Hill and Christopher Wilson, both involved in local non-profit Chicago Scholars and rising firstgeneration college students, attended Beating the Odds Summit at the White House.

Beating the Odds Summit is an event hosted by Michelle Obama as part of her Reach Higher initiative to celebrate college-bound students who have overcome great odds to get to where they are today. Hill and Wilson were in the company of about 130 carefully selected students from across the country who represent urban, rural, foster, homeless, special needs and under-represented youth who have overcome substantial obstacles to persist through high school and make it to a post-secondary institution.

At the summit, students were celebrated for their tremendous accomplishments and had the opportunity to hear advice from the First Lady as well as major White House and Department of Education representatives, staff from organizations like Google and influencers such as Tyler Oakley and Jidenna.

Students also participated in workshops and panels led by the Department of Education, author and BridgeEdU CEO Wes Moore and other leaders in K-12 and post-secondary education. The breakouts focused on sharing tools and strategies students can use to successfully transition into to college and to the resources they will need to complete the next level of their education.

Nia and Christopher were given the opportunity to attend because Chicago Scholars was invited by the White House to nominate and sponsor two deserving students.Both rising college freshmen credit Chicago Scholars for transforming their lives and helping them overcome the grave challenges they have faced growing up in their under-resourced Chicago neighborhoods.

CHICAGO – The Illinois Commerce Commission is hosting a Cybersecurity policy session on Thursday, July 21 from 10:00am3:00pm. The policy session will focus on the specific roles of government and industry stakeholders in protecting the nation’s critical energy infrastructure.

The session’s panels will feature government officials and industry experts who will discuss successes, challenges, strategies, best practices, industry frameworks and opportunities for improving and implementing effective cybersecurity measures.

“At a time when cyber threat actors are becoming increasingly sophisticated, the time is ripe for a strategic dialogue between cybersecurity leaders to encourage information sharing and to illuminate how all parties may work together to contribute to the fabric of the nation’s cybersecurity policy as well as protect the services, data and information essential to the people of Illinois,” said Commissioner Sherina Maye Edwards, who is leading the policy session.

Dermatologists Share Tips to Stop Nail Biting Breaking a nail is one thing. Breaking a nail-biting habit is another, say member dermatologists from the American Academy of Dermatology. Nail biting typically begins in childhood and can continue through adulthood, and the side effects can be more than cosmetic, say dermatologists.

How to Stop Biting Your Nails “Chronic nail biting can cause serious problems,” said board-certified dermatologist Margaret E. Parsons, MD, FAAD, associate clinical professor of dermatology, University of California, Davis. “In addition to making the skin around your nails feel sore, repeated nail biting can damage the tissue that makes nails grow, resulting in abnormal-looking nails. It can also leave you vulnerable to infection as you pass harmful bacteria and viruses from your mouth to your fingers and from your nails to your face and mouth.”

To help patients kick the habit, Dr. Parsons recommends the following tips: Keep your nails trimmed short: Having less nail provides less to bite and is less tempting.

Apply bitter-tasting nail polish to your nails: Available over-the-counter, this safe but awful-tasting formula discourages many people from biting their nails.

Get regular manicures: Spending money to keep your nails looking attractive may make you less likely to bite them. Alternatively, you can also cover your nails with tape or stickers or wear gloves to prevent biting.

Replace the nail-biting habit with a good habit: When you feel like biting your nails, try playing with a stress ball instead. This will help keep your hands busy and away from your mouth.

Identify your triggers: These could be physical triggers, such as the presence of hangnails, or other triggers, such as boredom, stress or anxiety. By figuring out what causes you to bite your nails, you can figure out how to avoid these situations and develop a plan to stop. Just knowing when you’re inclined to bite may help solve the problem.

Try to gradually stop biting your nails: Some doctors recommend taking a

gradual approach to break the habit. Try to stop biting one set of nails, such as your thumb nails, first. When that’s successful, eliminate your pinky nails, pointer nails, or even an entire hand. The goal is to get to the point where you no longer bite any of your nails.

“For some people, nail biting may be a sign of a more serious psychological or emotional problem,” said Dr. Parsons. “If you’ve repeatedly tried to quit and the problem persists, consult a doctor. If you bite your nails and develop a skin or nail infection, consult a board-certified dermatologist.”

NEW ORLEANS CONVENTION TO FOCUS ON VOTING RIGHTS The Progressive National Baptist Convention, Inc. (PNBC) will celebrate its 55th Annual Session in New Orleans from August 7-14, 2016. Considered the Emerald Anniversary, PNBC President Dr. James C. Perkins will lead the denomination that represents over 2,000 churches with weeklong events. With the upcoming presidential election, a focus of the Annual Session will include the importance of the vote. PNBC is expected to host one or more of the presidential candidates during the convention.

The denomination was founded out of the Civil Rights Movement and their fight for human and civil rights remains a key mandate.

While in New Orleans, the group will focus on informational and education campaigns with an aim of assuring that people of color across the country are registered to vote.

PNBC will work with various local and national civic and faith-based organizations to help undergird their message. Dr. Perkins’ views on voter registration was the basis of a recent Op-Ed article for BlackAmericaWeb. com, “The resurgence of racism, the future of the Supreme Court, the dismantling of the Voting Rights Act, the future of the Affordable Health Care Act, police brutality, and a biased criminal justice system, all make it imperative that we wake up and sound the alarm to stir our people to participate in this year’s election.” Dr. Perkins has called on PNBC churches to hold voter registration drives in their congregations. The denomination is providing the Freedom Sunday Coalition’s Faith Leader’s Toolkit for Civil Engagement as a guide for hosting voter registration drives.

PNBC is compiling their churches’ campaign results through posts provided at voter-registration@ pnbc.org, which will be announced during the Annual Session.

In addition to the voting registration agenda, the Annual Session will provide the expected 5,000 attendees with ministry workshops, Christian Education

classes, a pastoral division, and preaching. The Women in Ministry track will feature daily sessions created to encourage and support women ministers and pastors. The Congress of Christian Education features nearly thirty classes with topics from Bible studies to church ministries. One of the most popular components of the Annual Session is the Pastors Division. This year, clergy will choose from learning tracks that enable churches to reach a yearning community. (StatePoint) You might not earn your living taking care of lawns, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get the same quality of cut as landscape professionals.

For a consistently superior cut, experts say average consumers should look for commercial grade products.

“Homeowners can also benefit from the performance and reliability a true com­ mercial mower offers,” says Lloyd von Scheliha, product manager at Exmark, a lead­ ing manufacturer of lawn care equipment.

“You’ll get lawn care done faster and it will look better in the end. Your mower will also last longer and require less maintenance.”

Homeowners should be advised however that the term “commercial grade” is thrown around a lot these days in advertising. If you’re in the market for a new mower, you should understand what commercial grade really means before making a purchase.

“Take a look at the equipment your local landscape professionals are using and you`ll get a good feel for what commercial mow­ ers look like,” says von Scheliha.

He says homeowners should con­ sider the following: * Your mower should offer superi­ or durability to stand the test of time. Look for fabricated cutting decks, which are stiffer, stronger and more durable than stamped decks — even reinforced models. The durability advantage should extend to the components as well. * Productivity and maneuverabili­ ty in a mower offer average consumers time­ savings, reducing the time that’s needed to cut a lawn, and then do trim work. Consider a zero­turn mower, which delivers a finished appearance more quickly than other mower types. * Even a commercial mower will deliver superior results longer if you perform routine maintenance. Always consult your owner’s manual to determine what specific maintenance is necessary for your machine.

Cleaning, sharpening or replacing blades as they dull, replacing belts as they become worn, oil and filter changes, and other specific mainte­ nance as outlined in your owner’s manual, will improve equipment performance and longevity.
