BASIC ACTIONS CAN STOP LIFE-THREATENING BLEEDING, HELP BYSTANDERS SAVE LIVES WASHINGTON, DC — Bleeding is the leading cause of preventable trauma-related death in the United States.

The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) recently partnered with local emergency care experts for Stop the Bleed Day which was held on on March 31, 2018.

The campaign’s goal was to equip the general public with the tools and knowledge to become immediate responders and help stop life-threatening bleeding.

After ensuring their own safety, anyone can start the “ABCs of Bleeding Injuries,” according to an ACEP press release which include: (A)lert. Get help by calling 911 yourself or telling somebody to call 911.

(B)leeding. Find the bleeding injury. Open or remove clothing over the wound to see it clearly. Look for and identify “life-threatening” bleeding.

(C)ompress. Apply pressure to stop the bleeding by: 1. Covering the wound with a clean cloth and applying pressure by pushing directly on it with both hands, OR; 2. Using a tourniquet, OR; 3. NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SOCIAL WORKERS ILLINOIS CHAPTER ENDORSES JB PRITZKER FOR GOVERNOR CHICAGO – The Illinois chapter of the National Association of Social Workers recently endorsed JB Pritzker for governor. NASW-IL advocates for over 20,000 licensed social workers in the state of Illinois, 6,000 of which are active members. The endorsement comes after JB Pritzker secured the Democratic nomination for governor.

“It is time to think big, it is time for a new direction. Our best chance for a new Illinois is under the leadership of JB Pritzker,” said NASW-IL spokesman Kyle Hillman.

hicago’s Urban Alliance and the Obama Foundation have teamed up to create the Obama Youth Jobs Corps (OYJC) program which will provide workforce readiness training and professional paid internships to high school students from the South Side of Chicago.

“The Obama Youth Jobs Corps is a joint initiative of the Obama Foundation and the Urban Alliance to prepare underresourced young people on Chicago’s South Side for economic self-sufficiency with workforce readiness training and early workforce experience,” said Jenna Ketchum, executive director for Urban Alliance Chicago.

Urban Alliance is a national youth development nonprofit organization operating in Chicago, Baltimore, Washington D.C., and Northern Virginia, according to a press release about the OYJC program. Everyone was excited for an opportunity to work with the Obama Foundation and expand the reach of Urban Alliance, according to Ketchum.

“When this opportunity came up, we wanted to do this together because it was important to the Obama Foundation but it was also important to Urban Alliance to better reach our young people,” said Ketchum.

The OYJC program is currently operating in Little Black Pearl Art and Design Academy, Hyde Park Academy, and Kenwood Academy. There are plans to expand the program into at least two more schools starting in the 2018/19 school year, according to a press release about the OYJC program. www.thechicagocitizen.com

The program begins with sophomores who receive five workforce training sessions throughout the year to lay the groundwork for further education. By their junior year, the students are participating in weekly job skills training where they dive into professional development, financial literacy, and post-high school planning. In their final year of school, students in the OYJC program are connected with a tenmonth professional internship, according to Ketchum.

“We have a wide variety of partners like law firms, tech companies, banks, hotels, investment companies, and nonprofit organizations. We have a pretty wide spectrum of job partners to serve our young people depending on what their skills or interests are,” said Ketchum.

There are even interns currently working for the Obama Foundation, according to Ketchum.

“It’s been a tremendous opportunity for them to see what’s going on at the Obama Foundation. Right now, they are paving the way for future interns at the Obama Presidential Center and it’s really exciting because this is just the start.

The Obama Foundation is absolutely excited to offer more opportunities down the road,” said Ketchum.

Ketchum said she is humbled every day by the young people she works with in the OYJC program.

“What we want is a transformational opportunity for young people where they can learn and grow and be confident in their abilities and see that there are people in this city that care so much about them and their success and want to rally around them to see them succeed,” said Ketchum.

Cook County Board President Requesting Community Input For Third Term Goals

ook County Board President, Toni Preckwinkle, hit the ground running after being elected to serve a third term.

She is working to create a Policy Roadmap that will be a comprehensive policy driven strategic plan for the Offices under the President.

Members of her staff hosted the first Policy Roadmap Community Meeting in Bronzeville recently to receive input from residents about what they want to see happen in Cook County over the next four years.

“The goal of the Policy Roadmap is to make sure we have one comprehensive plan. There are at least five bureaus under the president and they all have their own strategic plans of what they want to accomplish and this will include those but also include our broader goals,” said Lanetta Haynes-Turner, Deputy Chief of Staff for President Preckwinkle.

The brief presentation given by Turner at the Bronzeville meeting explained the six core areas where the Cook County Board will focus its policy for the next four years.

“It will focus on six broad policy areas that have been an essential part of the presidents administration and that we feel strongly that we need to make sure that, while we have already had some accomplishments, we want to take it to the next level and lay the infrastructure for long-term change,” said Turner.

The Office of the President is looking to create healthy, open, sustainable, vital, smart, safe and thriving communities with the Policy Roadmap. To do this, they need residents’ input on what they want to see in public health care, economic development, environmental justice, sustainability, public infrastructure, and criminal justice.

“I think the most important part of

anything that I’m going to say is that we want the Roadmap to reflect your ideas and your suggestions for the services that are important to you or need improvements or the policy areas that you really think that the county either has done well or there are opportunities for the county to consider,” said Turner This was the first of many community meetings and there is a community survey on the Cook County website that is available for people who can’t attend the community meetings.

“We are being very intentional about how we distribute the final Policy Roadmap. It will be posted on our Cook County website and broadly accessible to the public. We will push it out through our commissioner districts and we will also be putting into place a public dashboard so you can click on each goal that we set and see what our progress is on that at any given moment,” said Turner.

Google Hosts Technology Workshops For College Students

The Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) recently hosted two days of Google Workshops for students. The workshops were led by the school’s alumni who now hold positions at Google. Students were given the opportunity to learn, ask questions, and network with professionals from Google.

IU Writers’ Conference brings award-winning authors, poets to Bloomington campus

W

riters from across the county will travel to Indiana University Bloomington this summer to participate in the 78th annual IU Writers’ Conference. The conference, which is open to writers at any level -- from the hobbyist to the professional -- will feature a number of diverse and award-winning authors, poets and essayists.

“Since 1940, this conference has brought together some of the nation’s most prominent and up-and-coming writers to share their knowledge and craft with other writers,” said Bob Bledsoe, director of the conference.

“Being able to learn first-hand from writers at this level through workshops and classes is something our attendees have the unique opportunity to do throughout the conference.”

The conference will offer workshops in fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction, and classes in fiction,

cartooning, crime fiction and poetry.

In addition, participants can take part in a reading series and faculty panel discussions.

Headlining the conference will be authors Ada Limón, Matthew Klam and IU alumnus Kiese Laymon, who will each host a workshop focused on their writing style.

“Intensive writing workshops are the most inspiring and effective creative experiences I’ve ever been part of,” Klam said. “There’s something profound that happens in a concentrated period of days that’s entirely different from, say, a class that meets once or twice a week.

“I led a workshop at the Indiana University Writers’ Conference a few years ago, and the people who showed up there, the students and faculty, were on a really high level.

Indiana is a perfect example of this kind of experience, where you have breakthroughs and epiphanies, and

lead a workshop on fiction. Limón, author of five books of poetry, will lead conference attendees through a workshop on poetry.

Laymon, who earned an MFA in fiction from IU, is now a professor of English and African-American studies at the University of Mississippi, and a distinguished visiting professor of nonfiction at the University of Iowa.

Chicago Public Library To Commemorate The Life Of Mayor Harold Washington

hicago Public Library will host a program to discuss the new documentary film Or titled Punch 9--Harold Washington an ge Li nefor Chicago at Harold Washington st at Library. The program will take place at 6 pm on Monday, April 16 in the Cindy Pritzker Auditorium.

A group of middle school students from Whitney M. Young Magnet High School’s Academic Center have produced a ten-minute History Fair film on Harold Washington.

The program will begin with a showing of their film and a very brief discussion with the students before transitioning into the main program.

The main program includes a showing of the Punch 9 trailer and a Line Orange panel of Punch 9’s production team discussing the process and progress of their documentary project.

“Mayor Harold Washington was a trailblazer and a visionary, and his legacy lives on not only across the Chicago streets, schools, and parks that bear his name, but in the inspiration and idealism he instilled in generations of Chicagoans,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “I want to

thank both these young students and the adults for producing these great documentaries, and recognizing a leader who proudly fought for justice, equity and a brighter future for every resident in every community in Chicago.”

Harold Washington made history in 1983 when he was elected as the first African American Mayor in Chicago. He challenged the status quo in City Hall, which many didn’t agree with. He faced many challengers along the way, but his strong resilience and optimism eventually led him to the role of Mayor. The documentary will showcase various aspects of Washington’s political journey including the battles he had to fight and his lasting influence.

The students like to hear from professionals in the companies that they want to work for as opposed to hearing it from a career service professional, like myself.

A lot of times they give a little bit more credence to advice coming from a working professional,” said Engelhardt.

Through the workshops and events hosted by Google at IIT, the

students have been able to connect with job opportunities early and receive feedback from professionals within the company, making them better candidates for open positions.

“We have definitely seen an increase in the number of students being hired by Google over the last couple of years. In terms of the number of students recruited right after graduation, Google has been the second or third highest hiring company for the past couple years, meaning that they hire the third most graduates from IIT,” said Engelhardt.

“We have really started to develop a nice pipeline, I think this past spring, there were five of our students that went off to Google and that has been pretty typical each year.”

“I think that it is a great experience for our students and even if it doesn’t necessarily lead to a job at Google, it is helping them develop their creative thinking skills in a way that goes beyond the classroom,” said Engelhardt.

America Is Seeing A Flood Of ‘Flood Cars’ (NAPSI)—Recent research suggests drivers may be behind the wheel of more than 325,000 previously flooded vehicles.

That’s a 20 percent increase from 2016 and a stark reminder to consumers to do due diligence when used-car shopping.

ONE WOMAN’S STORY “I bought a car last year and the seller never told us anything about it being a flood car,” said Charlene Geiger from Pennsylvania. “When we got home and ran a Carfax, there it was—a flood car from Hurricane Sandy. It showed that the seller bought it as a salvage car and the title was washed when he brought it to Pennsylvania. We lost $16,000 over all of it.”

WHERE TO BE MOST WARY Vehicles reported as flood damaged by a state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), insurance companies and more have washed up in every state.

These 10 have the most:

1. Texas—51,000 2. Louisiana—29,000 3. Pennsylvania—20,000 4. Florida—19,000 5. Kentucky—16,000 6. Illinois—15,000 7. South Carolina—13,000 8. Virginia—13,000 9. North Carolina—13,000 10. Michigan—11,000.

In addition, several hundred thousand more flooded cars may emerge from Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

Historically, about half the vehicles damaged by floods end up back on the market. Flooded cars rot from the inside out as water corrodes the mechanical parts, shorts the electrical system, and compromises safety features like air bags and anti-lock brakes.

Health concerns are an added problem, as mold and bacteria permeate the soft parts of the car.

“Our data shows there’s still much work to be done in helping consumers avoid buying flooddamaged cars,” said Dick Raines, president of Carfax. “They can, and do, show up all over the country, whether it be a few miles or hundreds of miles from where the flooding occurred. Research has shown that the best way for us to predict how much we will enjoy an experience is to see how much other people enjoyed it. TIP #4: ELIMINATE TOXIC PEOPLE There is no good reason to put up with people saying or doing things that are unkind to you. You should avoid people who are mean or negative. If they make you unhappy you should eliminate them from your life.
