STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN PRESTIGIOUS DISNEY DREAMERS ACADEMY AT WALT DISNEY WORLD RESORT One hundred teens from across the nation participated in Disney Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and Essence magazine -- a four-day, immersive and transformational mentoring program at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida which concluded this weekend.

The 100 students were selected from thousands of applicants nationwide for this once-in-a-lifetime mentoring program that is designed to assist them in identifying and pursuing their dreams. The students, along with a parent or guardian, received an all-expensepaid trip to Disney to participate in the program, which features a series of career-oriented workshops and leadership seminars. ILLINOIS STATE BAR ASSOCIATION’S HIGH SCHOOL MOCK TRIAL INVITATIONAL TO TAKE PLACE IN CHAMPAIGN Teams from 41 high schools throughout the state will participate in the 36th annual Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) High School Mock Trial Invitational on March 24 and 25, 2018, at the University of Illinois College of Law in Champaign. The top eight teams will compete in the final round on March 25, for the state championship. The winner will represent Illinois at the National High School Mock Trial Championship in Reno, Nevada.

Each team tries both sides – plaintiff and defense – of a hypothetical case developed by the ISBA Committee.

This year’s case is Grant v Smith, a civil suit alleging the use of excessive force during an arrest. Students will assume the roles of attorneys and witnesses, and a panel of Illinois lawyers and judges, along with members of the ISBA Law Related Education Committee, will evaluate and score the students’ performances. The students must also take a written test about the issues of the case and basic legal principles.

n 1987, Mae Jemison was selected for the NASA astronaut program. Jemison grew up on the South Side of Chicago and had a background in engineering and medical research, she had also just returned from a two-year tour in the Peace Corps where she worked as a Medical Officer in Sierra Leone and Liberia, according to her biography from NASA. On Sept. 12, 1992, Jemison became the first African American woman in the world to enter outer space. On an eight-day mission on the Endeavor Jemison served as the science mission specialist and logged 190 hours, 30 minutes, and 23 seconds in space, according to NASA “My favorite memory I have is of the shuttle launching. It shakes and rattles until the solid rocket boosters come out, I remember having this huge grin on my face. About two hours after we got in orbit I looked out the window and no kidding, the first thing I saw from space was Chicago. I thought about that girl who grew up in Chicago who would have been just real cheesed up. The perspective that stuck with me is that I am as much a part of this universe as any speck of stardust,” said Jemison in a documentary created by MAKERS, a feminist media brand.

Jemison is not the only notable women in a space science that inspires girls in Chicago. For fifteen years, The Adler Planetarium has hosted an annual Women in Space Science event to recognize trailblazing women in science, technology, www.thechicagocitizen.com

engineering, and math (STEM) and inspiring young women to pursue careers in these disciplines, according to the Adler Planetarium.

“We invite approximately 250 middle school students, primarily from Chicago public schools, to come and spend the afternoon with us. They come to the planetarium and during their two hours here they hear the honoree speak about her job, and her background, and why she chose to pursue a STEM career and why it’s an option for everyone,” said Kelly Borden, Director of Teen Programs at the Adler Planetarium.

It is important to highlight women in STEM careers because it is a field with little female representation. If young girls who enjoy science can’t find any female professionals to look up to, their passions could be lost, according to Borden.

“Something that we hear over and over again is that representation matters and it’s incredibly true. We want our young people at the Adler to see themselves in the STEM professionals that they interact with,” said Borden.

This is something that Jemison provided for the world that had never existed before, a black female astronaut the little girls could look up to.

“If you are a young girl in Chicago interested in a STEM career you are very fortunate because there is a wealth of programs that you can access and opportunities that you could have never dreamed possible,” said Borden.

Chicago Film Maker Previews New Series About Independent Soul Artists

C

hicago film producer and director, John Jointer, recently held a screening for his newest docu-series, Indie Soul Journeys.

The pilot episode featuring Eric Roberson was premiered at the DuSable Museum of African American History and depicted the inspirational story of how Roberson found success as an independent soul artist and overcame a medical condition that could have ended his career.

featuring different independent artists in each episode. The artists’ background is woven through the episode which focuses on a specific instance when the artist has overcome adversity or gone through something difficult that could have changed their life forever, according to Jointer.

“Like with Eric, he came to a crossroads in his career with this very scary vocal cord surgery that had a possibility of ending his career as a singer. We go through how he overcame that while we are giving background on who he is and where he came from,” said Jointer.

The over-arching goal of the docu-series is to inspire viewers by showing them that everyone, even well regarded musical artists, face struggles.

“The take away that we are hoping people get from all of the series is a sense of inspiration and gaining something from it where they feel inspired to pursue their passions and understanding that adversity is a bump in the road and it’s something that can be overcome,” said Jointer.

While creating the series, Jointer noted that is was difficult to compress the complex lives and experiences of the independent soul artists into 30-minute episodes, but that’s what makes it a docu-series.

With an individual like Eric you’re talking about truncating 20-plus years of his career into a 26-minute show, that’s a difficult task to do. You have to identify those turning points,

key moments throughout his life that you can focus on while at the same time not losing the essence of their story,” said Jointer.

Indie Soul Journeys is still in the production process but they have episodes planned for Avery Sunshine, Maysa Leak, and Anthony David, according to Jointer.

They are also preparing to travel to the U.K. to create an episode on Omar Lyefook who is referred to as the King of UK Soul, according to Jointer.

“It’s a challenge getting these people to sit still long enough for us to get what we need

because performing and touring is how they make their living and how they eat. These are very active and very sought after artists so the coordination of it has been a real challenge, a fun challenge, but a challenge none the less,” said Jointer.

The timeline for Indie Soul Journeys is to be finished with production in May or June and have a broadcast premiere in late summer or early fall.

ComEd Approved To Build Bronzeville Microgrid

he Illinois Commerce Commission recently approved ComEd’s plan to create a microgrid in the Bronzeville neighborhood. The initiative will serve as an opportunity to study how microgrids can integrate renewable energy sources into the main electrical grid and provide flowing electricity to the area if the main electrical grid were ever damaged.

Michelle Blaise, senior vice president of technical services for ComEd, has been very involved with the microgrid project.

“Right now, the way our electric distribution system is designed, you have a big generating plant that feeds into the power lines and ultimately into your home. A microgrid is where you have smaller local generators. It could be solar power, fuel cells, battery power, and those become small little generators that connect together. If you have a problem in the larger broader gird, you can actually isolate the section that those small generators feed and

referred to as ‘islanding’ and it is possible by creating a microgrid that is powered from local energy sources, according to Blaise.

The microgrid will be almost undetectable in Bronzeville. Physically, the microgrid will use the existing wiring that is already running electricity to the buildings within the boundary. There will be energy generators and controllers placed within the boundary and they will be connected to the existing power lines, according to Blaise.

“We will be able to test it out in Bronzeville, where there is a great history of creativity and commerce. We see that as bringing technology to Bronzeville and opportunities for the residents to be involved in terms of new skill sets and new jobs,” said Blaise.

FASHION Dr. Barba Discusses How You Can Ensure Your Skin Receives the Best Skin Care

ove Dermatologist Dr. Alicia Barba shares her top tips to ensure your skin receives the best care this season and breaks down some common habits that may actually be hurting your skin vs. improving it.

Question: How many times should a person shower/

bathe daily?

Dr. Alicia Barba: Bathing once a day, or even twice

per day, is part of all of our routines. It’s what we do in the shower or bath that can really make an impact on our skin. Think of our bathing routine as the actual start of your beauty/skin-care routine. it’s important to understand is that excessive bathing while using the wrong products can really dry out the skin, which is worsened when there is long contact with hot water

and harsh soaps. Be careful to not to over scrub/or over exfoliate the skin and always use a moisturizing cleanser.

I recommend the Dove Beauty Bar as it gently but effectively cleanses, leaving soft, smooth skin. It won’t strip away skin’s moisture like soap can or leave behind that dry, tight feeling that ordinary soaps do, which can be a sign of dry skin damage. It’s also gentle enough to be used as facial cleanser!

Question: What is the best way to treat my skin before

and after waxing/shaving?

Dr. Alicia Barba: Think of waxing and shaving as a

deep exfoliation where skin is at risk for becoming super sensitive and more prone to irritation due to stripping of skin cells. Never dry shave, and always use a moisturizing gel or wash to prep the skin. When shaving, make sure you change the blade to a fresh one regularly and keep it dry and away from humidity. This will avoid bacteria from growing on the blade and possibly prevent folliculitis. After shaving, be sure to moisturize the skin.

Lastly, be mindful of direct sun exposure after waxing, as this can cause skin pigmentation in the waxed area.

Question: What is that tight or dry skin feeling many feel

right after a bath/shower?

Dr. Alicia Barba: Feeling tight or dry immediately after

a shower should not be considered “squeaky clean” or normal. This may be a sign that the stratum corneum was stripped of its essential lipids and hydrating proteins, stemming from the use of harsh cleansers or from too much contact with water.

Question: How should I dry my body after a shower?

Dr. Alicia Barba: Remember, not only do dirt, oil and

dead skin cells come off your skin during a long shower, but so do lipids and natural hydrators. Be careful with rubbing your skin too hard when drying off after a shower. I suggest pat drying and while still moist, layer on a good moisturizer. You do not want to rub the skin too hard with a towel when drying off to prevent over drying it and preserve your skin’s own natural moisturizers.

Diet vs. Exercise: Which is Better for Weight Loss?

WHAT’S MORE IMPORTANT: DIET OR EXERCISE? ANYONE WHO’S TRIED TO LOSE WEIGHT AND MAINTAIN A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE HAS LIKELY ASKED THIS QUESTION. Sixty-eight percent of people want to lose 10 pounds or more, according to a recent Harris Poll on behalf of Nutrisystem. March is National Nutrition Month, and a good time to get started on your goals. So, should you focus on diet, exercise or both?

When it comes to weight loss, the split should be roughly 80 percent focus on what you eat and 20 percent on exercise. The logic is simple, say experts.

“It’s all about calories in and calories out. If you’re eating less and exercising, you’re going to burn more calories,” says Courtney McCormick, corporate dietitian at Nutrisystem. “However, exercise often makes us hungrier, which is why many people who only change their exercise habits don’t see the scale move.”

To achieve a healthier lifestyle and shed weight, consider these quick tips that combine both diet and exercise.

• EAT MORE OFTEN: A 2015 study from the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that on average, people who ate six times or more daily consumed fewer calories, had a lower body mass index, and ate more nutrient-rich foods than those who didn’t eat at least six times a day. Eating smaller meals every three hours keeps you feeling full, controls blood sugar and helps boost metabolism.

• WATCH PORTIONS: American portions have become too big; and those used to dining out may consider restaurant portions to be correct, when they’re often four times as large as what’s recommended. Learning portion control is key to losing weight. When eating out, ask for a to-go box and save half for later. You can also turn to plans, like Nutrisystem, which deliver portion-controlled meals to your home.

• VEG OUT: Vegetables are low in calories, high in filling fiber and loaded with nutrients. For breakfast, add spinach to an omelet; at lunch, pile your sandwich high with fixings like tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers, or use lettuce as a wrap instead of bread. During snack time, munch on carrots dipped in hummus or blend kale into a fruit smoothie.

• DRINK MORE WATER: A study found that when people drank six cups (48 ounces) of cold water, they increased their resting calorie burn by up to 50 calories each day. Another study found that dieters who drank two eight-ounce glasses of water before meals lost 36 percent more weight over three months than those who didn’t sip before sitting down to eat. So, fill up that water bottle!

• GET MOVING: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend 150 minutes of aerobic activity weekly, but research suggests that it doesn’t matter if you exercise for two-and-a-half hours straight or break it up into 10-minute chunks. Aim for 30 minutes of exercise per day then build up to 60 minutes when you’re ready.

New biography sheds light on religious influences on iconic jazz songstress Billie Holiday

S

oulful jazz singer Billie Holiday is remembered today for her unique sound, troubled personal history, and a catalogue that includes such resonant songs as “Strange Fruit” and “God Bless the Child.” Holiday and her music were also strongly

shaped by religion, often in surprising ways. This April, Penn State University Press will release Tracy Fessenden’s Religion Around Billie Holiday, a compelling new book that examines the spiritual and religious forces that left their mark on the performer during her short but influential life.

Mixing elements of biography with the history of race and American music, Tracy Fessenden explores the multiple religious influences on Holiday’s life and sound, including her time spent as a child in a Baltimore convent, the echoes of black Southern churches in the blues she encountered in brothels, the secular riffs on ancestral faith in the poetry of the Harlem Renaissance, and the Jewish songwriting culture of Tin Pan Alley. Religion Around Billie Holiday will be released on April 7th, the 103rd anniversary of Billie Holiday’s birth.

usic can be an effective tool for working through your fears. Relaxing music can calm the jitters associated with fear. Soothing music has been known to reduce both heart rate and blood pressure, thus causing a calming effect among people who are experiencing fear and anxiety.

ou have many things to be grateful for.

Whenever you begin to feel fearful, remind yourself of the things that really matter to you and be grateful for them. When you find yourself focusing on a fear, replace it with thoughts of what you are thankful for. Jot down three great things that happened to you today. Keeping focused on the positive will really make a difference in eliminating and overcoming fear. Eliminating fear is an excellent way to increase your happiness.

Illinoisans pick ‘Blues Brothers’ as top movie SPRINGFIELD – Illinoisans have chosen

“The Blues Brothers” as the top movie in state history, embracing a film that celebrates car crashes, classic songs, Chicago landmarks and two shady characters trying desperately to do the right thing.

“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off ” and “A League of Their Own” came next in the online voting, which was part of the Illinois Top 200 project.

The project lets Illinoisans vote every two weeks on the best movies, most inspiring leaders, greatest books, top businesses and much more. By the state’s 200th birthday on Dec. 3, voters will have chosen 10 favorites in 20 different categories – the Illinois Top 200.

More than 1,500 people voted on the top movies. Voting in the next category, top businesses, is underway at www.IllinoisTop200. com.

“I’m a big fan of all three of the top movies, so I’m thrilled by the results. More importantly,

I’m thrilled that people are taking part in a conversation about the best of Illinois history,” said Alan Lowe, executive director of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. “I hope even more people will join the conversation as Illinois celebrates its bicentennial.”

Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival and the Poetry Foundation partner to remount Manual Cinema’s No Blue Memories: The Life of Gwendolyn Brooks CHICAGO – The Chicago

International Puppet Theater Festival and the Poetry Foundation are partnering to present Manual Cinema’s No Blue Memories: The Life of Gwendolyn Brooks, oneweekend-only, March 30 and 31 at Chicago’s historic Studebaker Theater, 410 S. Michigan Avenue, in Chicago’s Fine Arts Building.

Performances of Manual Cinema’s unforgettable multi-media retelling of Brooks’s life and work are Friday, March 30 at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, March 31 at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $25; $15 for students and seniors. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased in advance online at chicagopuppetfest.org.

Tickets will also be on sale in person prior to each show, pending availability.

No Blue Memories: The Life of Gwendolyn Brooks combines poetry, puppetry and live jazz to bring to life the story of one of Chicago’s most beloved figures. Gwendolyn Brooks was an icon, a poet laureate, and a Pulitzer Prize winner—but she was also a treasured educator and mentor to the countless writers and children who knew her as their very own “Miss Brooks.” Weaving poetry, storytelling, sound design, original live music, and striking visuals, No Blue Memories is an exploration of

Brooks’s beloved city and a story of how she navigated identity, craft, and politics over the course of one of the most remarkable careers in American literary history.

The Poetry Foundation commissioned Manual Cinema in 2016 to visually represent the life and work of Gwendolyn Brooks in a way that would be accessible for new fans and enticing for Brooks appreciators alike. The resulting production, No Blue Memories, received its world premiere in November 2017, what would have been Brooks’s hundredth year.

The 70-minute show combines intricate paper puppetry, live actors working in shadow, and an original score played live on stage. The script was co-written by Chicago poets Eve L. Ewing and Nate Marshall.

The music was commissioned from Jamila Woods and Ayanna Woods, who were granted permission from the Brooks estate for the first time to write a song using Brooks’s famous poem “We Real Cool.” The production also samples many of Brooks’s most memorable poems including “Eventide,” Beverly Hills, Chicago,” “Speech to the Young, Speech to the Progress Toward,” and “Chicago Picasso.”
