Respected longtime Chicago Area HIV Specialist to see patients at AHF’s Hyde Park and South Side locations CHICAGO-AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) recently announced that Danica Wilson, MD has joined its Chicago healthcare provider team. She will be serving patients at AHF’s Hyde Park Healthcare Center at 1515 E. 52nd Place and its South Side location at 2600 S. Michigan Ave that also includes a Wellness Clinic for walk-in STD testing.

Dr. Wilson is a graduate of Tennessee State University in Nashville, TN and received her medical degree from Ross University in Dominica, West Indies. She has served as a physician at Howard Brown Health Center in Chicago before joining Christian Community Health Center in 2014. Since 2015, Dr. Wilson has provided care at a private practice in Avondale.

“I am so excited to join AHF and continue providing exceptional care to Chicago’s LGBT community and people living with HIV/AIDS,” said Dr. Wilson. “My goal is to help our patients achieve complete total wellness in their lives and empower them to stay in treatment and keep a positive attitude about their futures.”

briefly Obama Foundation Announces Exhibition Designers for Obama Presidential Center Chicago, IL – The Obama Foundation recently announced that it has selected an interdisciplinary exhibition design team for the museum that will be part of the Obama Presidential Center (OPC).

The exhibition design team will be led by Ralph Appelbaum Associates (RAA) and will ultimately include several

firms and individuals with expertise in media, lighting, and acoustics. Several Chicago-based creative collaborators will play important roles in the exhibition design process. Almost half of the exhibition design work for the OPC will be performed by minority- and woman-owned businesses.

NEW BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPOINTED AT (CHIS&E) (CHICAGO) --The Chicago Pre-College Science & Engineering Program (ChiS&E) has appointed five new members to their Board of Directors. Each appointee brings unique qualifications to the organization, now in its 9th year of providing free quality STEM education to students in grades K-12. “ChiS&E walks the talk and, through its legacy program DAPCEP, has a proven track record of creating engineers that organizations like BP want to hire,” says BP executive Valerie Corr Hanserd, new board member. “I’ve been familiar with the program since I was a student in Detroit, and I’m thrilled to help support its growth in Chicago.”

The five appointees are attorney John Gavin, retired, Chandra James, Director of Science, Chicago Public Schools, Dr. Kevin Pitts, Undergraduate Dean of Engineering, University of Illinois-Chicago, Dr. Maurice Samuels, Program Officer, the MacArthur Foundation and BP executive Valerie Corr Hanserd.

The Chicago Pre-College Science and Engineering Program (ChiS&E) provides a pathway to a career in science or engineering. Beginning in Kindergarten through 8th grade, students participate in fun hands-on, age appropriate

learning activities to build science, engineering, and math knowledge. From the early grades students are introduced to pre-algebra skills and algebraic concepts.

“Mathematics is at the core of our program,” states Kenneth Hill, founder and CEO of ChiS&E. “That’s because there’s little chance of becoming an engineer without a solid mathematics foundation. And the earlier you begin, the greater the success.”

That’s what attracted Chandra James to ChiS&E. “Providing opportunities for early learners to engage in math, science and engineering is powerful and that is what this program offers,” she declares.

ChiS&E also engages and empowers parents as valued partners in their children’s education; and works with families to prepare students to succeed in undergraduate engineering and science programs in top universities.

The mission of ChiS&E is to increase the number of historically underrepresented African American and Latino students who are motivated and academically prepared to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

C-SPAN RELEASES THIRD PRESIDENTIAL HISTORIANS SURVEY

By Christopher Shuttlesworth As the United States continues to move under the leadership of its 45th President Donald Trump, C-SPAN released the results of its third Historians Survey of Presidential Leadership, in which a cross-section of 91 presidential historians ranked the 43 former occupants of the White House on ten attributes of leadership.

As a result, former President Abraham Lincoln ranked #1 for the third consecutive time with former Presidents “George Washington, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower,” completing the top five list of C-SPAN’s Presidential Historians Survey, according to C-SPAN.org.

Dr. Edna Medford, who serves on C-SPAN’s Presidential Historians Survey Academic Advisory Team, noted that it’s rare that any other former President comes above #1 ranked Former President Abraham Lincoln and said it’s significant that C-SPAN continues to determine through the Presidential Historians Survey how former Presidents have fared over a period of time.

“It’s important because it helps us get in touch with what

our leaders have done,” Medford said. “What we see is that the more time that goes by, more peoples’ attitudes about those leaders change for good or bad.”

Former President Barack Obama was selected and ranked #12 on the Presidential Historians Survey, according to C-SPAN.org.

Medford said she believes Obama’s ranking in the survey shows how much America really valued him as President.

While she acknowledged that Obama didn’t do everything right, Medford said she expects his ranking to go up during the next Historians Survey of Presidential Leadership.

“It’s a very good start,” Medford said. “What it means is that people already see the importance of his Presidency.

[But], I would have ranked him a little higher within the top ten because I think his accomplishments were truly exceptional.”

“The advisors used a one (“not effective”) to ten (“very effective”) scale to rate each president on ten qualities of presidential leadership: “Public Persuasion,” “Crisis Leadership,” “Economic Management,” “Moral Authority,” “International Relations,” “Administrative Skills,” “Relations with Congress,” “Vision/Setting An Agenda,” “Pursued Equal

Justice for All,” and “Performance Within the Context of His Times,” according to C-SPAN.org.

Medford said over 150 historians were invited to participate in the survey, but only 91 historians responded.

“This is a very complicated survey that takes time to do in a thoughtful way,” she said. “So, the people who did this were people who were truly committed to having their voices heard and had some understanding of the Presidency.”

“Participants were guaranteed that individual survey results remain confidential. Survey responses were tabulated by averaging all responses in a given category for each president. Each of the ten categories was given equal weighting in arriving at a President’s total score,” according to C-SPAN. org Medford said as much as she thinks Washington deserved to be in the top ten because he was the first President and the one to write the book on the Presidency, she still doesn’t know if she would’ve ranked him #2 and even Roosevelt at #3.

“It doesn’t surprise me that people go up and down in the ranking,” Medford said. “Each generation interprets history according to its own interest so we [will] see this over and over again in these surveys.”

During the interview, Lauren discussed her favorite poem and how it relates to women being used by men today. She said the poem is a grand metaphor between window shopping and how men tend to window shop on woman and never actually purchase or take care of the merchandise.

“When men approach women they want the clearance rack,” Lauren said. “They want the easiness, the cheap things. But when they can’t get that, then they are cool with just standing in front of the store, which is the women and treating them as some type of ownership. A lot of times men use women as a landmark or accomplishment just to have a stance on something.”

Lauren said her book called, “Commando,” will be released by Haymarket Books in May 2017. She says she writes poems that give black women more courage not to just stand up for themselves, but courage to say what they stand for and against.

I think my writing transpires that I’m a woman, but I can talk like a man if you want me to. Innovative Cancer Imager Earns Illinois Tech Professor Prestigious NSF CAREER Award Chicago – Illinois Tech Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering Kenneth Tichauer has been awarded a prestigious NSF CAREER Award in the amount of $568,245 to perfect a medical imager that could lead to earlier detection/diagnosis and targeted drug development for cancer patients.

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 1.5 million new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed this year. Tichauer’s project, “Development of Enhanced Early Photon Tomography for Cancer Staging,” involves the ADEPT Cancer Imager, which will enable more accurate measures of the molecular environment of an individual’s cancer. Treatment strategies can then be tailored on a personalized level—a process known as personalized medicine.

Tichauer and his ADEPT team are also the finalists of Illinois Tech’s Nayar Prize I, a $1 million prize package funded by the family foundation of an Illinois Tech alumnus.

The team has built an imager prototype and has applied for a patent. Members are now collaborating with two cancer experts from the University of Chicago and Georgetown University on how to best bridge the gap between testing the ADEPT system and using it in hospitals.

The NSF CAREER Award is one of the agency’s top honors given to junior faculty members. The award program supports faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education, and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations.

BLACKS RETURN TO THE LABOR MARKET AND FIND JOBS, BLS REPORT SAYS

The Black unemployment rate continued to improve falling from 7.8 percent in December to 7.7 percent in January, according to the latest jobs report from the Labor Department.

The labor force participation rate for Blacks, which is the share of workers who are employed or looking for jobs, increased from 61.8 percent in December to 62.4 percent in January. The employmentpopulation ratio (E-POP), the share of people who hold jobs compared to the total population, edged up from 57 percent in December to 57.5 percent last month. Compared to December, more Blacks entered the job market and found work in

January.

The economy added 227,000 jobs in January. Retail trade, construction, and financial activities saw the greatest gains in jobs, the report said.

Even though much of the data was collected before President Donald Trump took office, Trump Administration officials were quick to take credit for the solid jobs report.

Economist Kate Bahn of the Center for American Progress, an independent nonpartisan policy institute dedicated to improving the lives of all Americans, said that the most recent jobs report was, “the final release of data that reflects how the labor market fared under President Barack Obama, with 227,000 jobs added—near the average for the past two years.”

eing glamorous and leading a ‘real’ life might seem like contradictory concepts, but it’s all a day in the life for actress Holly Robinson Peete. The multitalented actress, entrepreneur, author and philanthropist is currently shooting the second season of her family docu-series “For Peete’s Sake”with her husband, former NFL quarterback Rodney Peete, their four children and her mother, Dolores. The show gives a positive spin to reality TV by sharing their lives, everyday challenges and their journey with son RJ, who has autism.

Being a mom, career woman and shooting a docu-series can be demanding, but Robinson Peete juggles her multi-faceted life in style. The actress recently launched a namesake clothing line, HRP by Holly Robinson Peete, exclusively available at EVINE Live. While Robinson Peete has a wonderful family and many achievements, her life has

not been without challenges. When her father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, her world changed. “My dad [has] been gone for 14 years now, but his struggle with Parkinson’s led us to a life of service,” said Robinson Peete. Inspired to help those affected by Parkinson’s, she and Rodney founded the HollyRod Foundation in 1997. After their son, RJ, was diagnosed with autism they expanded the mission of HollyRod to also provide support and resources to families affected by autism. To help raise funds for the foundation, every year they hold events such as DesignCare - and fashion and entertainment are very much on the agenda.

While fashion is a highlight of DesignCare, HollyRod, most importantly, has been able to help many people thanks to the support of dedicated friends and sponsors. “We’re really blessed to have great partners,” said Robinson Peete. “One in 68 kids are affected by autism spectrum disorder. It’s on the rise and what happens is a lot of these children have no access to therapy services or any compassionate care and the same with Parkinson’s,” she said.

The Immigration Enforcement Police State is Here

February 7: Muhammad Ali, Jr., returning to the US from a speaking engagement in Jamaica, is detained for two hours at Florida’s Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and questioned about his name and religious beliefs.

February 22: Passengers disembarking from a domestic (San Francisco to New York) flight at JFK airport are held up by US Customs and Border Protection agents demanding their IDs. February 24: Jeffrey Tucker of the Foundation for Economic Education clears the usual security checks at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport en route to Mexico. Then, while actually boarding the plane, he and the other passengers on the flight are stopped by US Marshals demanding that they submit to retinal scans.

You’re probably thinking that this is the point where I’ll take a break to blame Donald Trump. It isn’t. It’s the point where I’ll take a break to remind Americans who’ve been voting for politicians who promise to “secure the border” and other such authoritarian nonsense that THIS is exactly what they’ve been voting for.

also happens to have been the position Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush both took in the 1980 Republican presidential primary debates) I usually prefer to stick to the moral argument.

That argument, put simply, is that where peaceful people move to, settle or work is nobody’s business but theirs.

But there are practical arguments against America’s increasingly draconian immigration laws too. Enforcement is expensive but, fortunately, almost certain to be ineffectual (if it worked, severe economic downturn would be the result).

The most important of the practical arguments, in my opinion, is that a police state built to persecute immigrants will necessarily persecute everyone else as well.

I’ve spoken with friends who traveled in the old Soviet Union and eastern Europe before the Berlin Wall came down. They see near-complete similarity between those regimes and the operations of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs and Border Protection and Border Patrol forces.

The difference between pre-reunification East Germany and the 100-mile wide “constitution-free zone” along the US-Mexico border is the flag the agencies in question salute.

Recent administrations have worked to expand that zone to cover the entire country and the Trump administration seems bent on finishing the job.

The near-total police state blossoming before our eyes is the inevitable result of America’s 70year romance with the astoundingly stupid idea that it’s the government’s business to monitor and control who travels, lives and works where.

America had legally open borders for its first century as a nation, and nearly so for half a century after that. It wasn’t until after World War Two that one even needed a passport to enter or leave the United States.

Open borders worked. Freedom worked.

The subsequent seven decades of attempts at rigorous immigration control have irrefutably established that our choice is not between open borders and closed borders, but between immigration freedom or totalitarian government. And Americans’ time to stop the stampede toward the latter is running short.

This Notice by Declaration becomes a Security Agreement wherein User is a debtor and "Upper and Lower Case Name Here' is Secured Party, signifies that User: (1) grants Secured Party a security interest in all of User's proper­ ty in the sum certain amount of $500,000.00 per each trade name/trademark use, per each occurrence of use (violation/infringement), plus triple damages, plus cost for each such use, as well as for each and every use of any and all derivatives of, and variations in the spelling of, "EUGENE CLARKE JR©,"; (2) authenticates This Security Agreement where­ in User is debtor and Eugene Clarke Jr. is Secured Party, and wherein User pledges all of User's property, i.e. all consumer goods, farm products, inventory, equipment, money, invest­ ment property, commercial tort claims, letters of credit, letter­of­credit rights, chattel paper, instruments, deposit accounts, accounts, doc­ uments and general intangibles, and all User's interest in all such foregoing property, now owned and hereafter acquired, now existing and hereafter arising, and wherever located, as collateral for securing User contractual obliga­ tion in favor of Secured Party for User's unau­ thorized use of Secured Party's copyrighted property; (3) consents and agrees with Secured Party's filing of a UCC Financing Statement wherein User is debtor and Eugene Clarke Jr. is Secured Party; ( 4) consents and agrees that said UCC Financing Statement described above in paragraph "(3)" is a continuing financ­ ing statement, and further consents and agrees with Secured Party's filing of any continuation statement necessary for maintaining Secured Party's perfected security interest in all of User's property and interest in property pledged as collateral in Security Agreement described above in paragraph "(2)" until User's contractual obligation theretofore incurred has been fully satisfied; (5) authorized Secured Party's filing of any UCC Financing Statement, as described above in paragraph "(3)," as well as in paragraph " ( 4 )," and the filing of any Security Agreement, as described above in paragraph "(2)," in the UCC filing office; (6) consents and agree that any and all such fil­ ings described in paragraph "( 4)," and "(5)" above are not, and may not be considered, bogus, and that User will not claim that any such filing is bogus; (7) waives all defenses; and (8) appoints Secured Party as Authorized Representative for User; effective upon User's default re User's contractual obligations in favor of Secured Party as set forth below under "payment Terms" and "default Terms,' with full authorization and power granted Secured Party for engaging in any and all actions on behalf of User including, but not limited by, authentica­ tion of a record on behalf of User, as Secured Party, in Secured Party's sole discretion, deems appropriate, and User further consents and agrees that this appointment of Secured Party as Authorized Representative for User, effective upon User's default, is irrevocable and coupled with a security interest. User fur­ ther consents and agrees with all of the following additional terms of Self executing Contract/Security Agreement in Event of Unauthorized Use. Payment Terms: In accor­ dance with fees unauthorized use of "EUGENE CLARKE JR©," as set forth above, User hereby consents and agrees that User shall pay Secured Party all unauthorized­use fees in full within ten (10) days of date Secured Party's invoice, hereinafter "Invoice," itemizing said fees, is sent and received.
