MAYOR EMANUEL, CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY TEAM UP WITH APPLE TO SUPPORT COMPUTER SCIENCE TEACHERS Chicago Public Schools, Apple and Northwestern University today announced a new collaboration to offer free professional learning to teachers across Chicago. Through this unique partnership, teachers will receive the training they need to effectively bring coding, computer science and problem solving into their classrooms for success in the 21st Century workplace.

Chicago Public Schools, Apple and Northwestern University will establish a Center for Excellence at Lane Tech College Prep High School, which will serve as a teaching and learning hub to introduce and train teachers in Apple’s Everyone Can Code curriculum. This collaboration will help expand opportunities for local teachers, giving them new expertise to share with their students and providing them an opportunity to be trained on Apple’s Swift programming platform.

PARTNERING FOR HEALTH EQUITY – IDPH CELEBRATES NATIONAL MINORITY HEALTH MONTH National Minority Health Month, which is celebrated every year in April, is an effort to raise awareness about health disparities that continue to affect racial and ethnic minority populations. In accordance with this year’s National Minority Health Month theme, “Partnering for Health Equity,” the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) Center for Minority Health Services will continue to bridge efforts and awareness across the state and increase partnerships in order to help accelerate health equity and make the state of Illinois a stronger and healthier state.

The IDPH encourages everyone to become part of this awareness month by participating in health promotion events and activities going on around the state. IDOC OPENS MURPHYSBORO LIFE SKILLS RE-ENTRY CENTER MURPHYSBORO, IL - The Illinois Department of

Corrections opened its second Life-Skills Re-entry Center recently, aimed at helping offenders learn skills that will be critical to their success upon release. The first 20 offenders were transferred to the Murphysboro Life Skills Re-entry Center, in Murphysboro, IL recently. They’ll go through an orientation process and get acclimated to the new facility before starting educational, job readiness, and cognitive behavior therapy courses. They will also learn skills that help them readjust to society - like how to manage a bank account, use the latest technology, and schedule medical appointments.

“Our goal is to help build a strong foundation and stop the revolving door to prison,” said IDOC Director John Baldwin.

“We’re improving outcomes for the men and women in our custody. When they return to their communities with the skills needed to reintegrate successfully, they will be better parents, better neighbors and better citizens overall.”

Offenders who have one to four years left on their sentence qualify for placement at the Life Skills Re-entry Centers.

Mayor Announces Investment in Waterfront Parks

he Mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel recently announced Building on Burnham, a strategy to invest in Chicago’s riverfront and lakefront parks and neighborhoods.

In 1909, the Plan of Chicago was created and released by Daniel Burnham, an architect and urban planner. Burnham’s plan recommended a series of projects that focused on the protection and preservation of Chicago’s neighborhood parks, according to a press release from the Mayor of Chicago.

Over 100 years later, Mayor Emanuel has resurrected Burnham’s plan and used it as inspiration for the Building on Burnham plan which centers around investments in Chicago’s lakefront, the Chicago River, recreational assets, and programming; and natural areas, according to a press release from the Mayor of Chicago.

“Two years ago, we came together and we laid out a shared vision for Chicago’s parks and open spaces, our Lake, and our River. We called that plan Building on Burnham,” said Mayor Emanuel.

The new investment from the office of the Mayor seems to be inclusive to all of Chicago, so neighborhoods on the south side will finally get better access to their lakefront.

“We have already crossed the finish line at the 35th Street Bridge, connecting Bronzeville with Burnham Park and the Lake. We all know that a lot of communities including Bronzeville, the Quads, Kenwood and parts of Hyde Park were cut off from the Lakefront. By adding and rehabilitating www.thechicagocitizen.com

bridges at 35th Street, 39th Street, 41st Street and 43rd Street, we are putting an end to that inequity. Our playbook for expanding access to the Lake has more than trails and bridges,” said Emanuel.

Other amenities coming to the south side as part of the Building on Burnham plan are a recently completed pool at the 31st Street Beach Harbor and a rock climbing wall on the lakefront at Steelworkers Park on 87th St., according to Mayor Emanuel.

The plan also includes the creation of separate biking and running paths along the entire 18-mile Lakefront Trail from Ardmore Avenue to 71st Street.

“The work we are doing today will ensure our Lakefront will be open, accessible and enjoyable for all Chicagoans across all parts of our city for generations to come,” said Emanuel.

The mayor also announced further investment into the riverfront experience. The plan will continue to transform the Chicago River into the city’s next recreational park and create riverfront access across the city, according to a press release from the Mayor’s office.

“The Second City is now known for our second waterfront, as well as our first. Our Lake and our River are not just economic engines, they are sources of civic pride, celebration, and tradition,” said Emanuel. “Burnham’s vision was that the Lake and the River would be woven into the fabric of the City.

Today, with our work on both the Lake and the River, we are well on our way to fulfilling that vision.”

Local Organization that Fought for Trauma Center is Proud to See it Open Continued from page 1

he University of Chicago Medicine will be opening their new state-of-the-art level one adult trauma center at 8 a.m. on May 1. Bringing an adult trauma center to the South Side of Chicago has not been an easy task, but a coalition of local organizations took it upon themselves to champion the trauma center campaign that has been taking place for the last several years.

The trauma program will include violence recovery and wraparound services designed to help trauma patients successfully transition

back into the community, including outpatient psychiatric, behavioral health and social recovery care, according to the University of Chicago Medicine. These services are something that neighborhood desperately needs.

“The trauma center was really just a prime example of an unequal access to resources and an inequality with respect to critical health services and it had an inordinately pronounced impact on people on the South Side and actually people in Hyde Park and nearby areas where the incidence of gun violence is higher than in other parts of the city,” said Judy Levy, executive director of the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs (JCUA)

The JCUA is a Jewish social justice organization and was one of the six organizations that made up the Trauma Center Coalition that worked tirelessly to demand that the University of Chicago open an adult trauma center.

“Within the coalition, we all worked very specifically together to map out what our strategies were. We worked with members of our own communities who were in positions that may have some influence over the decisions that were made around the trauma center, but we also worked on a larger scale with coalition members to figure out who the primary targets in the city were that needed to be persuaded to call on the

University of Chicago to do the right thing,” said Levy.

The trauma center coalition included the JCUA, Southside Together Organizing for Power (STOP), Kenwood Oakland Community Organization (KOCO), National Nurses United, Students for Healthy Equity, the Prayer and Action Collective.

When the University of Chicago Medicine opens the adult trauma center, it will mark the first in 27 years that an adult trauma center has operated on the South Side of Chicago, according to the University of Chicago Medicine.

“We are thrilled. We were proud and honored to have been able to work with the coalition on this

critical issue. It’s really exciting when people in the community can come together and effect real change in this way and it’s going to save lives,” said Levy.

The University of Chicago Medicine trauma center will be equipped with the resources and staffing necessary to provide comprehensive, specialized care 24/7 for patients who suffer a traumatic injury. A traumatic injury could include anything from a motor vehicle crash or gunshot wound to a severe burn and fall.

Rare 1846 Men’s Shirt Donated to the Illinois State Museum SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Illinois State Museum is thrilled to

announce the recent donation of a man’s dress shirt dating back to 1846, with a documented history of who made it, who wore it, and the specific day on which it was worn.

Springfield native Zimri Enos wore the short on his wedding day on June 10, 1846. The high-collared, ruffled shirt is made of linen, fastens to the throat, and is embroidered with Zimri’s initials. Its triangular-shaped gussets under the sleeves would have allowed him to have a wider range of motion.

Ruffled shirts were considered fancy at the time, and were typically worn by urban gentlemen. They even had some political implications. Politicians of the day who wished to paint their rivals as elitist and out-of-touch often accused each other of wearing “ruffled shirts.”

Zimri’s mother, Salome Enos, made the shirt. She’s considered one of the “founding mothers” of Springfield because she and her husband were one of the first families to own land in the city. The

shirt was passed down through several generations before being donated to the Illinois State Museum by the O.M. Hatch family, descendants of the Enos family. The shirt came with a handwritten note reading, “Wedding shirt of Father’s made by Grandma Enos.”

While a shirt like this would have been common in the 19th century, they’re quite a rare find today. Most of them were cut down for children’s clothing, cut up for bandages, or turned into rags somewhere along the way.

The shirt will be on display at the “Illinois Bicentennial and Beyond: The Illinois Legacy Collection” exhibition, which will open on June 30.

The Illinois State Museum, located on located 502 S. Spring St. in Springfield, promotes discovery, learning, and an appreciation of Illinois’ natural, cultural, and artistic heritage. The Museum’s extensive collections and research activities provide the foundation for exhibitions and public programs that tell the story of the land, life, people and art of Illinois.

Louis Vuitton Announces Virgil Abloh as New Menswear Designer New York – Virgil Abloh, 37, is

making history as the first black artistic director for Louis Vuitton. This is a huge accomplishment, considering how underrepresented black names are in the luxury European world of fashion. Here’s what we know about the new designer.

In 1998, Abloh started DJing for fashion parties and even opening sets for artists like Travis Scott, going by the name, “Flat White.” He graduated from University of Wisconsin with an engineering degree and then studied architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He’s had no formal training in fashion design, however, his fashion interest peeked meeting with Kanye West in 2002, becoming his creative consultant. Then in 2009, Abloh and West interned at Fendi.

Michael Burke, CEO of Louis Vuitton, was the CEO of Fendi at the time of Abloh and West’s internship. “I paid them $500 a month,” Burke told the New York Times.

“I was really impressed with how they brought a whole new vibe to the studio and were disruptive in the best way.

Virgil could create a metaphor and a new vocabulary to describe something as oldschool as Fendi. I have been following his career ever since.”

In 2012, Abloh started his first fashion label, Pyrex Vision, a streetwear line with luxurious T-shirts and vintage flannels.

This set the precedence for his next line, Off-White, launched in 2013 and has a higher-end twist on streetwear fashion.

And good news for the Off-White fans, Abloh will still be designing for Off-White as he takes on his new role with Louis Vuitton.

Voters Choose the Top Illinois Buildings SPRINGFIELD, IL – Buildings inspired by

sports, religion, the Illinois prairie and the skies above were chosen as the state’s top buildings in online voting for the Illinois Top 200 project.

The top vote-getters include Chicago’s Wrigley Field, the Baha’i House of Worship in Wilmette, a “Prairie style” Frank Lloyd Wright home in Springfield and Chicago’s soaring Willis Tower.

The Illinois Top 200 project lets Illinoisans vote every two weeks on the most inspiring leaders, greatest books, top businesses and much more. By the state’s 200th birthday on Dec. 3, voters will have chosen 10 favorites in 20 different categories – the Illinois Top 200.

Voting in the next category, top historic sites, is underway at www.IllinoisTop200.com.

JARROT MANSION – This Cahokia

mansion was completed around 1810, making it the oldest brick building in Illinois. The owner, Nicholas Jarrot, was a French immigrant who became a successful businessman and wanted a substantial home in the new Federal style.

FORT DE CHARTRES POWDER MAGAZINE – The powder magazine is

considered the oldest building in Illinois, dating back to the 1750s. It was part of a fort the French built about 45 miles south of modern St. Louis to control “the Illinois country” – the area that supplied vital food to Louisiana.

Among the buildings that did not make the top 10: Bloomington’s David Davis Mansion, Carbondale’s R. Buckminster Fuller Dome, Champaign’s State Farm Center and Moline’s Deere & Co. headquarters.

The Illinois Top 200 is a joint initiative of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, The (Springfield) State Journal-Register and the Illinois Bicentennial Commission.

renders this Copyright Notice a Security Agreement wherein User is debtor and Stephen Oliver Cobb ® is Secured Party, and signifies that User: (1) grants Secured Party a security interest in all of User's assets, land, and personal property, and all of User's interest in assets, land, and personal property, in the sum certain amount of $500,000.00 per each occurrence of use of the common-law-copyrighted tradename/trade-mark STEPHEN OLIVER COBB®, as well as for each and every occurrence of use of any and all derivatives of, and variations in the spelling of, STEPHEN OLIVER COBB®, plus costs, plus triple damages; (2) authenticates this Security Agreement wherein User is debtor and Stephen Oliver Cobb ® is Secured Party, and wherein User pledges all of User's assets, land, consumer goods, farm products, inventory, equipment, money, investment property, commercial tort claims, letters of credit, letter-of-credit rights, chattel paper, instruments, deposit accounts, accounts, documents, and general intangibles, and all User's interest in all such foregoing property, now owned and hereafter acquired, now existing and hereafter arising, and wherever located, as collateral for securing User's contractual obligation in favor of Secured Party for User's unauthorized use of Secured Party's common-law-copyrighted property; (3) consents and agrees with Secured Party's filing of a UCC Financing Statement in the UCC filing office, as well as in any county recorder's office, wherein User is debtor and Stephen Oliver Cobb ® is Secured Party; (4) consents and agrees that said UCC Financing Statement described above in paragraph "(3)'' is a continuing financing statement, and further consents and agrees with Secured Party's filing of any continuation statement necessary for maintaining Secured Party's perfected security interest in all of User's property and interest in property, pledged as collateral in this Security Agreement and described above in paragraph "(2)," until User's contractual obligation theretofore incurred has been fully satisfied; (5) consents and agrees with Secured Party's filing of any UCC Financing Statement, as described above in paragraphs "(3)" and "(4)," as well as the filing of any Security Agreement, as described above in paragraph "(2),'' in the UCC filing office, as well as in any county recorder's office; (6) consents and agrees that any and all such filings described in paragraphs "(4)" and "(5)" above are not, and may not be considered, bogus, and that User will not claim that any such filing is bogus; (7) waives all defenses; and (8) appoints Secured Party as Authorized Representative for User, effective upon User's default re User's contractual obligations in favor of Secured Party as set forth below under "Payment Terms" and "Default Terms," granting Secured Party full authorization and power for engaging in any and all actions on behalf of User including, but not limited by, authentication of a record on behalf of User, as Secured Party, in Secured Party's sole discretion, deems appropriate, and User further consents and agrees that this appointment of Secured Party as Authorized Representative for User, effective upon User's default, is irrevocable and coupled with a security interest. User further consents and agrees with all of the following additional terms of Self-executing Contract/Security Agreement in Event of Unauthorized Use: Payment Terms: In accordance with fees for unauthorized use of STEPHEN OLIVER COBB® as set forth above, User hereby consents and agrees that User shall pay Secured Party all unauthorized-use fees in full within ten (10) days of the date User is sent Secured Party's invoice, hereinafter "Invoice," itemizing said fees. Default Terms: In event of non-payment in full of all unauthorized-use fees by User within ten (10) days of date Invoice is sent, User shall be deemed in default and: (a) all of User's property and property pledged as collateral by User, as set forth in above in paragraph "(2)," immediately becomes, i.e. is, property of Secured Party; (b) Secured Party is appointed User's Authorized Representative as set forth above in paragraph "(8)"; and (c) User consents and agrees that Secured Party may take possession of, as well as other-
