NEWS briefly EDUCATION CENTRAL STATE UNIVERSITY RECEIVES GRANT FROM DOMINION ENERGY FOR IT INFRASTRUCTURE, SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT, AND STUDYINTERNSHIPS Students at Central State University will expand its summer institute internship programs, increase virtual learning accessibility, and grow their endowment scholarship funds thanks to a $500,000 grant from Dominion Energy.

Central State University is one of 11 historically black colleges and universities benefitting from Dominion Energy’s six-year “HBCU Promise.” The program will support endowments, capital projects, operating expenses, and educational programs in clean energy at HBCUs in Virginia, Ohio, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

“Dominion Energy is proud to partner with Central State University in supporting scholarships for students and enhancing the institution’s IT infrastructure to bridge the digital divide,” said Leighton McCoy, vice president of gas distribution technical services. “This grant will also provide real-world work experience through student internships as they explore their career options.

We look forward to uplifting Central State University students and highlighting their achievements as they pursue excellence and success.”

KINDBODY ANNOUNCES RECIPIENTS OF $50,000 FERTILITY GRANT FOR BIPOC INDIVIDUALS Kindbody, a fast-growing health and fertility company, recently announced the recipients of a $50,000 fertility grant created this summer in support of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) individuals. Kindbody created the grant in partnership with Fertility for Colored Girls, a nonprofit organization that provides education, awareness and financial assistance to Black women and couples, and other women of color, experiencing infertility. After a competitive application process, the four grant recipients are Dana Bingham, Ma’Keba Spicer, Carmia Marshall and Afrika Lander. The grant will go towards covering three IVF cycles and one egg freezing cycle at Kindbody locations.

“We received over 300 applications, more than 10 times as many applicants we’ve had with previous grants,” said Reverend Dr. Stacey Edwards-Dunn, who founded Fertility for Colored Girls after going through seven rounds of IVF herself. “The overwhelming amount of submissions I reviewed underscores that Black Lives Matter, and Black reproductive health matters too.”

EEOC ISSUES UPDATED COVID-19 TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE PUBLICATION The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) recently posted an updated and expanded technical assistance publication addressing questions arising under the Federal Equal Employment Opportunity Laws related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The publication, “What You Should Know About COVID-19 and the ADA, the Rehabilitation Act, and Other EEO Laws,” now includes a new section providing information to employers and employees about how a COVID-19 vaccination interacts with the legal requirements of the the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA). This includes issues pertaining to medical pre-screening questions and employer accommodations for those unable to receive a vaccination.

In response to inquiries from the public, the EEOC has provided resources on its website related to the pandemic in an employment context. The agency will continue to monitor developments and provide assistance to the public as needed. More information is available at www.eeoc.gov.

Whitney and Diamond Cumbo opened their first Prima Lash & Beauty Bar, located at 754 W. 35th St., in 2019. Now, they are set to open their second location in 2021.

Prima Lash & Beauty Supply, located at 755 W. 35th St., is across the street from the first location and will offer African American hair care products.

Whitney said they wanted to open their first location because they wanted to do something in the beauty realm. Whitney decided in college that she wanted to take a lash class so she could have residual income and have something that could create generational wealth for her family.

Diamond always knew she wanted to be a part of the beauty business. Before Whitney taught her how to do lashes, she did hair for two years. “I’ve always been a beauty industry girl. I’m a super girly girl. I like to play in makeup and dress up. So, I’m very attuned to beauty and cosmetics and fashion,” Diamond said.

It is a full-service salon with eyelash technicians, nail technicians and hair technicians, as well as estheticians and makeup artists. “It really just took off. We picked the location, we just wanted to be in a very nice upscale location, just to give our clients an upscale experience,” she said.

Whitney said opening the second location, with a beauty supply happened because they knew people would come in for the service and would want some of the products.

“People were traveling out of the community to get the products, so we said, “why don’t we just bring it to our community, for our people.”

Whitney said it is very important for young Black women to become entrepreneurs because she wants other young girls to know

it is possible to be a Black woman and an entrepreneur. “Anything you put your mind to, you can do it. And, I just wanted to be that example, because it’s one thing to say it, but it’s another thing to be it and to show it,” she said. “I wanted to show young children, you can do it, don’t let anything deter you.”

Diamond said due to COVID-19, they had to pivot by social distancing in the beauty bar, shutting down when they were told to shut down and the shop was constantly disin-

fected. Whitney said the COVID-19 pandemic really hit them because they were used to being open and serving clients. “It really slowed us down, so we had to do things to make sure we were still getting income, while following the guidelines,” Whitney said.

One of the things they did was offer products online. Another thing was to move the classes they provide online. Business, storefront launch and lash classes were moved online.

“We just really went back to the drawing board,”

Whitney said.

Diamond said opening up a second location in 2021 feels amazing. “With the pandemic, with so many people being laid off work, which slowed down our income, it’s an amazing feeling for sure, it’s definitely a blessing to be opening up a second location,” she said. “We’re definitely thankful for the support, we appreciate it all. It just feels liberating for sure.”

7 Ways to Improve Your Family’s Dental Health in the New Year StatePoint - The New Year is the perfect time to hit “reset” and start over with fresh dental habits that can help improve your health.

“As we move into the new year, so many of us are looking at our health and wellness through a new lens,” says Dr. Ruchi Sahota, American Dental Association (ADA) spokesperson. “Your oral and overall health are connected -- and even small improvements in your oral health routine can have big payoffs in your overall well-being.”

To help you usher in 2021, the ADA offers seven recommendations for improving your family’s dental health routine: 1. Brush twice a day for two minutes each time using fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled brush.

Place the brush at a 45-degree angle to the gums. Gently move the brush back and forth in tooth-wide strokes.

inside surfaces of the front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and make up-and-down strokes. Parents should instruct kids to do the same.

2. Clean between teeth daily using only interdental cleaners, such as floss or water flossers, to reduce the risk of cavities and gum disease.

3. Eat a nutritious diet. Sugary foods and snacks can lead to tooth decay. On the other hand, calciumand phosphorous-rich foods protect and strengthen tooth enamel. Fruits and vegetables are also good choices for a healthy smile since they have high water and fiber content, which

help clean teeth.

4. Schedule regular dental visits for prevention and treatment of oral disease. Experts say that your family can have safe dental visits, even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Early in 2020, the ADA used science to develop guidance for dentists on extra steps they can take to help protect patients and staff, in addition to the infection control procedures they’ve always followed. According to a report published in the “Journal of the American Dental Association” in October, 2020, 99 percent of dentists are using enhanced infection control procedures and disinfection practices when treating patients.

5. Look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance. Every product carrying the Seal has been evaluated by independent experts to be safe and effective.

To earn the Seal, companies are often asked to meet higher standards than what’s required by law. Look for specific Seal bullets on the back of

every Seal product package to find out how they can help keep your mouth healthy.

6. Think twice if you’re considering DIY dental treatments. Some such fads, like oil pulling, are just not effective. Others, such as whitening with charcoal, could even cause damage. Before taking matters into your own hands, talk with your dentist to learn about the potential risks and benefits of each treatment.

“A dentist’s office is a safe place where a doctor is ensuring you’re getting quality care that will actually treat the root of your problem,” says Dr. Sahota.

7. Ditch bad habits that can harm oral health, like nail-biting, clenching your jaw, chewing ice and using your teeth as a stand-in for tools like scissors.

Ad Council, CDC launch The Power of Us, a campaign designed to educate and empower the Black community to continue to help stop the spread of Coronavirus The Ad Council, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the CDC Foundation, and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) are launching a national campaign called The Power of Us to support Black Americans, who have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The new campaign is designed to inspire Black Americans to continue to make a difference to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

Created by Complex Collective, Complex Networks’ primary audience insight research engine, the integrated platform highlights how Black Americans have been impacted

by COVID-19. Black men and women are 2.6X more likely to contract the virus; 4.7X more likely to be hospitalized; and 2.1X more likely to die from COVID-19. Additionally, Black men and women in America are dying from COVID-related symptoms at an alarming rate.

The Black community lost over 45,000 lives since the pandemic was declared in mid-March.

Black Americans make up

13% of the U.S. population, but account for nearly 22% of COVID-related deaths, meaning Black Americans are dying of COVID-19 at almost double the national rate, as of November 2020, according to COVID-19 Racial Data Tracker.

“Evidence shows African Americans are at greater risk of getting sick, becoming seriously ill, and dying from COVID-19,” said Leandris Liburd, PhD, MPH, MA, director of the Office of Minority Health and Health Equity at CDC. “In response, CDC is committed to addressing the health disparities and inequities associated with the impact to these populations by partnering with trusted organizations to educate and empower everyone to make informed decisions on how they can protect themselves and their loved ones who face severe outcomes from COVID-19.”

The Power of Us focuses on creating personal COVID messages tailored to the Black community. The campaign encourages the social sharing of COVID-19 stats and facts

that will motivate family and friends to continue to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

Black voices featured in the spots and who are supporting this message include: rapper and actor Bun B and Nadeska, who is host and executive producer of “Everyday Struggle,” Complex’s hip-hop debate show. The new campaign website (BeThePowerOfUs. org) features social media assets to encourage the sharing of COVID-19 safety tips on social distancing, face mask-wearing, and personal hygiene, such as hand washing. In addition, as so many are being affected financially during the pandemic, the website also provides information on getting tested for free. With over 45,000 Black

lives lost to COVID to date and COVID-19 infection cases rising throughout the nation, this campaign is more important than ever.

“As the number of Black lives lost due to COVID-19 continues to rise daily, it is extremely important to speak directly to the Black community about having the power to help stop the spread of COVID-19. The entire Complex Networks’ team that worked tirelessly to bring this initiative to fruition knew it was our responsibility as a trusted media brand to inform on this important issue. We thank the Ad Council and CDC for being our partners in delivering this important message. We want The Power of Us to educate and give the Black community the power to save ourselves, our families, and our communities,” said Meyako Hughes, director of Brand Partnerships, Complex Networks.

To date, the Ad Council’s efforts have reached 35 billion impressions across $404 million in donated, earned and shared media. This has translated to over 58 million consumer engagements and nearly 31 million direct sessions to Coronavirus.gov.

A coalition of leading CEOs and organizations recently came together to announce the formation of OneTen, an organization that will combine the power of these committed American companies to upskill, hire and promote one million Black Americans over the next 10 years into family-sustaining jobs with opportunities for advancement.

In this moment when all Americans share an aspiration for greater economic opportunity, leading executives and employers across industries are taking action to make a meaningful, measurable and lasting systemic impact on racial and economic justice and to create a more equitable society.

OneTen connects employers with talent partners, leading nonprofits and other skill-credentialing organizations that support the development of diverse talent.

OneTen was founded by Ken Chenault, chairman and managing director of General Catalyst and former chairman and CEO of American Express; Ken Frazier, chairman and CEO of Merck; Charles Phillips, managing partner of Recognize, chairman of the Black Economic Alliance and former CEO of Infor; Ginni Rometty, executive chairman and former CEO of IBM and Kevin Sharer, former chairman and CEO of Amgen and former faculty member at Harvard Business School. Barber College At South Suburban College in South Holland Offers Quick Access To A Career Credential And Wages The South Suburban College Board of Trustees recently approved the hiring of its first ever Barber College faculty, Bobby Mattison, at its November board meeting.

Chairman Frank M. Zuccarelli and the SSC Board first announced the establishment program last December. The college subsequently received full approval from the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) this year as well as its licensure from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).

Construction for the new, fully equipped barbering facility has already been completed at the college’s Main Campus in South Holland.

Mattison will begin leading the program effective January 4, 2021 as SSC readies to open for the spring semester.

A licensed barber and barbering instructor, Mattison was instrumental in growing and licensing a Barbering Program at Statesville Correctional Center, and most recently at Cook County Juvenile Detention Center. He also opened a private business called Legacy Barber College with a partner in Glenwood, IL, for which he was featured on ABC News.

Mattison says he looks forward to creating new opportunities for others to become barbers. “You have to find something you love and would do it for free, but find a way to get paid for it,” said Mattison. “Barbering is that for me and I know it can be for so many others.”

The SSC Barbering program was established in part by a Workforce Equity Initiative (WEI) grant the college received through the Illinois Community College Board which included funding for several new in-demand programs.

The WEI project is designed to create, support and expand short-term workforce training opportunities in high need areas within SSC District #510. Through expanded access, opportunity, and support services, the project is anticipated to yield impactful outcomes for individuals, families, communities, local businesses.

The Barbering curriculum is a 17-month credit program leading to professional certification. SSC will be offering a 41-hour

South Suburban College recently announced the opening of a Barber College at its South Holland Campus.

Barber Technician (BT) Certificate and a 60hour Associate of Applied Science Degree in Barbering track for students seeking a college degree as a part of the program. Both tracks will include preparation and testing for National Barbering Written Licensing Examination, which is essential to applying for licensure in Illinois.

“South Suburban College’s Barbering Program will be the only active public Barber School in the state,” added Matt Beasland,

Dean of Adult & Continuing Education and administrator over the Barber College. “It will provide our constituents with quick access to a career credential that can lead to family sustaining wages.”

According to BLS data, the average salary for a Barber in Illinois is $42,930, or $20.64 per hour with an increase in demand of 9% by 2026. In the Southland area, there are currently 286 new job openings for barbers.
