DURBIN, DUCKWORTH, BUSTOS ANNOUNCE MULTI-YEAR EXTENSION FOR QUAD CITIES TO CHICAGO AMTRAK RAIL PROJECT FUNDING US. Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), and U.S. Representative Cheri Bustos (D-IL-17), recently announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued an extension for $177 million in Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) funding for the Amtrak route between Chicago and Moline until December 31, 2024. In June, the members sent a letter to DOT Secretary Elaine Chao that urged DOT to extend the deadline for Illinois to use the $177 million in FRA funding that was secured in Fiscal Year 2010. After being encouraged by negotiations regarding the scope of the project, the members sent another letter in October and again urged for an extension of this crucial funding.

“Today’s announcement gives local communities in the Quad Cities the certainty needed to plan ahead for the new passenger rail service. After years of unnecessary delay, Senator Duckworth, Representative Bustos, and I have pushed hard to make Amtrak in the Quad Cities a reality. The future of this critical Illinois transportation project looks bright,” Durbin said.

Proudly proclaiming himself as a product of Bronzeville, Justice Neville was raised on the south side of Chicago and shared that he finds many aspects of his judicial philosophy to come from the experiences he had growing up in Bronzeville which he refers to as “sacred ground.”

“I was born on sacred ground. I was educated at Forrestville Grammar School and DuSable High School, just like Harold Washington. I attended church in Bronzeville. I was nurtured in Bronzeville and educated in Bronzeville. Bronzeville has socialized me and that’s where I think I acquired my judicial philosophy which is equal justice for all,

no person should be unseen and no person should be unheard,” said Neville.

Justice Neville is a graduate of Washington University’s School of Law and has been actively practicing law in Illinois since 1974 when he first became a law clerk for Justice Glenn T. Johnson of the Illinois Appellate Court, according to information provided by the Illinois Courts.

In 1999, Justice Neville was appointed to the Circuit Court of Cook County and in 2004 he was appointed to the Illinois Appellate Court. Justice Neville previously served as Chairman of the Executive Committee for the Illinois Appellate Court’s First District and is a former member of the Appellate Court’s Executive Committee, according to information provided by the Illinois Courts.

In addition to his work inside the courtroom, Justice Neville is the co-founder of the Alliance of Bar Associations which was created in 1998 to unite bar associations that represent various members of the Illinois legal community and to promote diversity in the Illinois Courts.

“The Alliance of Bar Associations was formed because, in my opinion, the entity at

that point in time that was charged with the responsibility of vetting or examining the qualifications of judges was not diverse,” said Neville.

“I didn’t think it included enough women. I didn’t think it included enough Asians, Latinos, and it certainly didn’t include enough blacks.”

Neville pointed to this moment as an indication to voters that he is a “judge of action” and went on to say that while many others can say that they feel the importance of diversity, he can show that he has taken action to prioritize diversity in the Illinois judicial system.

“I am a public servant and I am sitting on the court to serve the people. I’m not looking to be elected so that I can help myself, I am sitting there to help every citizen whether it be black or white, whether they be rich or poor. I am there to make sure that every citizen gets not the justice they can afford, but the justice they deserve,” said Neville.

Justice Neville is one of seven candidates running for the open seat in the Illinois Supreme Court’s 1st District. Other candidates running for the same office include Appellate Court Judges Cynthia Cobbs, Nathaniel Howse, Jesse Reyes, Margaret McBride, Sheldon Harris and lawyer Daniel Epstein.

Former LAPD Chief Chosen As Interim Superintendent After City’s Top Cop Announces His Retirement

The unexpected announcement last week by Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson that he will retire next month has led to the selection of an interim police superintendent when the city’s top cop retires.

Johnson will officially retire on Dec. 31 and will be temporarily replaced by former Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck until a permanent superintendent is hired, which Mayor Lori Lightfoot said would happen in the next three to six months.

“After 31 years, it’s time for someone else to pin these four stars to their shoulders. These stars can sometimes feel like carrying the weight of the world,” Johnson said during a Nov. 7 news conference at Police Headquarters with his family by his side. “This job has taken a toll on me. It has taken a toll on my health and my family but my integrity remains intact.”

Lightfoot, who joined Johnson at the news conference said, “The city will always have a debt owed to you for everything you did to keep our streets safe and make our quality of life better,” Lightfoot told Johnson as he started crying. “Chicago is better because Superintendent Johnson called this city his home and dedicated his career to serving it.”

at a Friday news conference, echoed Lightfoot’s sentiments about the superintendent.

“Certainly Superintendent Johnson is owed much credit for crime reduction and improving the overall moral of the police department,” said Taliaferro. “His imprint on this city will forever be remembered.”

Johnson, a former resident of the Cabrini Green public housing complex on the Near North Side, began his career with the Chicago Police Department in 1988 as a beat officer. He was appointed the commander of

the 6th District in 2008, and chief of patrol in 2012 where he stayed until his appointment as superintendent.

“CPD needs strong leadership and I want the next top cop to continue making improvements to public safety and in a department I love,” said Johnson. “Chicago is a safer place than when I was appointed Superintendent in April 2016.

People in every neighborhood and on every block trusted me with their safety. I will never forget this job or those that have helped me succeed,” he said.

Plant-Based Laundry Detergent Company Wins South Side Pitch Competition

During the sixth annual South Side Pitch competition, hosted by the University of Chicago, Dinobi Detergent came in first-place out of 120 south side-based businesses that entered this year’s competition. As the winner, Dinobi Detergent received $5,000 in cash and a one-year membership to Polsky Exchange, a small business incubator and co-working space in Hyde Park.

Dinobi Detergent was created by Augustine and Sylvia Emuwa who live in Bronzeville with their four children. The Emuwas struggled trying to find a laundry detergent that worked for their family and didn’t cause their children’s eczema to flare up. One day, they decided to quit buying new products and focus on creating their own detergent from scratch. After trial and error and with the help of a qualified chemist, they settled on a four-ingredient formula that is now known as Dinobi Detergent.

“We started having some conversations with folks which led to some informal focus groups and we were able to figure out that there was a need there,” said Augustine Emuwa, co-founder of Dinobi Detergent.

the Emuwas wanted to build their brand as being a high-quality natural laundry detergent that could be used to clean garments for the

entire family, from cloth diapers to athletic wear, and they wanted to make sure it was at an accessible price point.

Their goal when creating Dinobi Detergent was to keep it simple and the four-ingredient formula was perfect for them because as business owners and as parents they firmly believe that less is more when it comes managing sensitive skin.

“Our detergent is made of water, plant-based surfactants, which are basically the ingredients that pull the dirt off of the clothing, vegetable-derived fatty alcohol, which helps the formula to stay together and stay liquid, and lavender essential oil and that’s it,” said Sylvia Emuwa, co-founder of Dinobi Detergent.

For the recent South Side Pitch competition, Dinobi Detergent was one of 120 south side businesses to submit applications and the Emuwas said that completing the application allowed them to reflect on their business plan and think about how they were going to make an impact on the community through their product.

“For the application, we had to go through a process where we responded to some questions and those questions really set an additional foundation for us because they got us thinking about how we are going to make sure that our business focuses on the south side and on Chicago as a whole,” said Augustine Emuwa.

New Grocery Store Set to Open this Month in South Shore

A much-anticipated grand opening for a new grocery store in South Shore appears finally ready to happen this month for the holiday.

“We are working hard to have it open as quickly as possible,” said Rory Hancock, general manager for Shop & Save Market, parent of Local Market. Local Market by Shop & Save will open its new store inside the former Dominick’s at 2101 E. 71st St. Shop & Save already operates two Chicago stores at 5829 S. Archer Ave. and 6312 N. Nagle Ave. as well as a store in Downers Grove, Bridgeview, Des Plaines, and Niles where it is headquartered.

Ald. Leslie Hairston (5th), whose ward includes the new grocery store at the Jeffery Plaza, said she is hopeful the new store will be open before Thanksgiving.

“While we don’t have an exact date yet, it will open this month,” said Hairston, who added that Local Market would occupy about 62,000 square feet vacated by Dominick’s in December 2013.

Hairston said Local Market will be

tailored for the community and have a community room, wine bar and outdoor patio. Hot foods to go will also be sold.

But unlike Dominick’s, which leased its space, Shop & Save, an independent operator of grocery stores, purchased the entire 113,000 square-foot Jeffery Plaza strip mall thanks to $10 million in tax-increment financing from the city of Chicago.

“The beauty of this (ownership) is that they want to work with the community and they like working with the community,” Hairston told the Citizen.

Hairston said she’s not worried about a 48,000-square foot Jewel Osco store that recently opened nearby at 6014 S. Cottage Grove Ave. “Residents want to shop in their neighborhood and not drive elsewhere for groceries,” she said. “I can’t tell you how many people walked up to me over the past few years and asked me when will I get a grocer to come to South Shore.”

The store has 97 full-time positions to fill before it opens, according to Hancock. And since August, three hiring fairs, including one on Nov. 1, were held. Hairston said

about 500 people attended the last fair and 300 previously for the other two fairs.

Fight to Fame, an entertainment platform with the aim to create new movie stars from the fighting industry recently announced that Roy Jones Jr. has joined fellow world class fighters Chris Van Heerden, Rigan Machado, and Prince Badi Ajamu as one of Fight to Fame’s ambassadors. The ambassadors are expected to guide the new blockchain technology company in the right direction while drumming up support from upcoming fighters.

Fight to Fame’s global boxing ambassador, Roy Jones Jr., is one of the success stories in the boxing space. Jones is a former professional boxer who has also worked as an actor, boxing trainer, boxing commentator, and rapper.

Roy Jones Jr. was born in the United States in 1969 and comes from a family of boxers. His father, Roy Jones Sr., was a middleweight boxer who received a Bronze Star for valor for rescuing a fellow soldier in the Vietnam War. As an amateur boxer, Roy Jones Jr. won a number of accolades including the 1984 United States National Junior Olympics, the US 1986 National Golden Gloves, and the US National Golden Gloves in 1987. He completed his amateur career with an impressive 121-13 record, comparable to other boxing greats such as Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Oscar de la Hoya, and Pernell Whitaker.

He enjoys being the only boxing champion to have held seven golden belts including the IBA, IBF, IBO, NBA, WBA, WBC, and WBF titles.

Roy Jones Jr. was named Fighter of the Decade for the 1990s by the Boxing Writers Association of America while

the Ring Magazine named him the Fighter of the Year in 1994. He won the Best Boxer ESPY Award on three occasions (1996, 2000, and 2003).

At his best, Jones Jr. was known for his great hand speed, movement, athleticism, and reflexes. He won 12 unified light heavyweight title bouts, which by 2018, stood as a record for the most wins in the fighting industry.

Jobs Report: Employment Growth Stronger Than Expected The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 128,000 in October. According to a press release from The Conference Board, this is a stronger than expected gain given the negative impact from the GM strike, which probably lowered overall employment by more than 50,000. The numbers for August and September were significantly revised up.

The Board added that the main message from the recent report is that the current trend in employment growth is higher than expected and is probably in the 150,000-200,000 range, also stating that with such solid employment growth, consumer spending is likely to remain strong into the holiday season and keep the US economy growing despite cautious spending by businesses.

Black Representation and Appearance in Japanese Pop Culture

With the release of Netflix’s “Cannon Busters,” we go back to the age-old conversation of representation of African Americans in anime. The most well-known characters in Japanese pop culture have often been represented with European features and fairer skin tones such as Naruto, Ichigo, Luffy, or Spike Spiegel. Even in live-action adaptations, some of these characters have been played by Caucasian actors.

Even when there is a Black character written into a storyline, their features are often exaggerated or they are made into a stereotype, most infamously with Mr. Popo of “Dragon Ball” fame; his dark as night skin and big red lips reminiscent of Blackface.

This issue extends outside of classic cartoon anime. Japanese video games are also guilty of unequal and stereotypical representation.

There are many different types of representation and all of these entertainment companies are missing the mark on all of them.

The closest thing we have gotten to a fair and entertaining anime representation is in Aaron Mcgruder’s “The Boondocks.” Yes, I know that The Boondocks is not considered an anime, but it has anime influences, and development by Madhouse Studios made it the closest thing we have

gotten to an enjoyable anime with a predominantly Black-filled cast.

Unfortunately though, as much as I enjoyed “The Boondocks” and how it cleverly portrays stereotypes, they are stereotypes nonetheless.

“Cannon Busters,” which is a part of Netflix’s anime initiative to bring about more original content was recently released, and I have to say the quality of it and the writing are outstanding.

“Cannon Busters,” has all the qualities of a traditional anime, giant mecha’s, over the top protagonists, and a dramatic impossible plot, but I am disappointed with “Cannon Busters” in one aspect.

In Episode two of the series, we are introduced to the Gearbolt Empire.

“Cannon Buster’s” has Black Warriors, a Black Prince, a Black King and most importantly a Black hero named Odin. I see Odin as a double-edged sword.

This presented a chance to show off powerful deities with African origins.

There are plenty of gods to choose from in the Yoruba and Egyptian pantheon such as Ogun, Sango, or Horus. On the other side of this problem is the fact that a Black man is depicted as a powerful larger than life figure named Odin who has traditionally looked like a grizzled caucasian male with an eye patch.

Video games also have their own role in this dilemma. Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy are two of the most popular video game series and have cemented themselves in American pop culture.

Kingdom Hearts is a joint venture with Disney Interactive and Square Enix. Kingdom Hearts combines the worlds of Final Fantasy and Disney films. The third entry in the Kingdom Hearts series was released early in 2019 and the game overall is good, but yet again another missed opportunity.

Several Disney worlds were featured in the game, but the easy slam dunk world that is missing is “The Princess and the Frog.” For some fans of the series, this was a disappointment.

Kingdom Hearts is overflowing with the themes of dark vs light, love conquers all, magic (good and bad), and whimsically simple-minded villains such as Dr. Facilier. Even the Bayou would have made a great location for the main characters of Sora, Donald Duck, and Goofy to play around in, you could have even turned them into frogs like the design mechanic that was done when the characters went to see Simba from the Lion King in Kingdom Hearts II which visualized them as Lions.

Final Fantasy faces a different issue. More than thirteen plus games make up the Final Fantasy series and there has barely been a handful of memorable characters. Barret Wallace and Sazh Katzroy are practically the same characters. They both use guns as their main style of fighting and have operated as comic relief at various points in the main story.

himself isn’t a bad character, but it’s what he is carrying around with him constantly: A Chocobo.

Chocobo’s are like horses in the Final Fantasy series and to any uninformed viewer, kind of cute, but to the informed it carries the stereotype that Black people love chicken which is an insulting character choice. Barret Wallace, on the other hand, is made to look like a stereotype, a muscled up Black man with a gun (as I previously stated).

I hope they treat Barrett a cut above his old self in the Final Fantasy VII remake set to release March 3, 2020.

I just want a Black Final Fantasy character that has a slim muscular build who carries around an awe-inspiring sword that one day my kids would want to dress up as for Halloween.

Is this an issue of the Japanese studios not interacting enough with people of African heritage or is it a matter of malevolence?

We notice the trend of African American stereotypes even outside of Japanese anime and video game culture. In Jordan Peele’s critically acclaimed movie “Get Out.” There is a scene where the main character Chris, played by Daniel Kaluuya is attending a “get together’’ for his girlfriend’s family which is filled with nothing but Caucasian Americans with the exception of a man played by the Japanese actor, Yasuhiko Oyama.

On IMDB the character is listed as Hiroki Tanaka, a Japanese name. Is this

a commentary on how Asian Americans are allowed opportunities that African Americans are not? Is this a way for Jordan Peele to say that the Japanese see African people the same way Caucasians do? Or is this a way of saying that the Japanese identify with Caucasian Americans more than the other marginalized and oppressed groups due to their colonization by the English?

We as Black nerds are entitled to characters that we can identify with and can show to children for them to take pride in. Growing up I loved Goku, Cloud, and Sora. But it would have been nice to have a stalwart and cool character that I was a kid could look up to that I could identify with that looked like me.

The good news is that the release of Marvel’s “Black Panther” brings in a new era of representation that does not have the word “stereotype” anywhere around it. The bad news is that there is not a character of color that stands out in the world of anime like Goku or Naruto.

Celebrate the Holiday Season at Millennium Park Campus with Holiday Traditions Millennium Park will be the epicenter of holiday cheer in Chicago, featuring your favorite seasonal traditions, Chicago’s official Christmas Tree, ice skating, music, exhibitions, an art market and free family fun. The 106th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place on Friday, November 22, at 6pm, featuring music performances, Santa Claus and more.

The program will feature Grammy® Awardwinning artist Jonathan Butler who grew up in Cape Town, South Africa, and recently released his second Christmas album, Christmas Together. Also performing will be Cielito Lindo, a modern Latino Mariachi made up of the 9-member Lucero family. Chicago mourns the death of Rose Farina Longtime Director of Programs and Exhibits at the Richard J. Daley Center Rose Farina, Longtime Director of Programs and Exhibits at the Richard J. Daley Center in Downtown Chicago, who created the Weekday “Under the Picasso” Free Noontime Entertainment Programs, Passed away Saturday, November 2, 2019 at the age of 88.

She was the Mother of Four Sons, Seven Grandchildren, Four Great Grandchildren and the Devoted Wife of 60 Years of Former Chicago Alderman, World War II Army Veteran and Civic Leader, Louis Farina.

Mrs. Farina began the wonderful noontime programs in the then Civic Center Plaza at the request of Mayor Richard J. Daley, after her work as the Ethnic Coordinator for the Chicago Bicentennial Committee In 1975-76. She would serve under Six Different Mayors over the 28 years with the City Departments of Fine Arts and then Cultural Affairs.

She received countless accolades from throughout the Ethnic, Arts and Entertainment Community of Chicago and Illinois and was an early promoter of Black History Month, Military Veterans Recognition including those of Vietnam Veterans, and countless programs promoting the Rich Cultural Mosaic of Chicago.

She was recognized in 1993 as one of Chicago’s 100 Prominent Women, as part of the “Circle of Honor” Art Exhibit that saluted the contributions of 100 activists, artists and businesswomen.

Mrs. Farina was recognized for her work with a Superior Public Service Certificate, The Chicago City Council and Mayor Richard M. Daley, Joint Civic Committee of ItalianAmericans, United States Department of Defense Award of Appreciation, a Piano donated to the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs in her name by the Beautiful Sound Inc., The Sicilian Cultural Association as their first Medal of Merit Recipient

One of her proudest achievements took place in 1993 by inviting the Italian Town of Marostica to bring their Medieval Human Chess Game to Chicago and stage a performance in Full Costume at the Daley Center Plaza which was laid out in a Huge Chess Board.

The Daughter of Italian Immigrants from the small mountain town of Ciminna, Sicily, she was the Fourth of Five Children of James Torina, a Plasterer and U.S. Army Veteran of World War I, and Francesca Graziano, a Seamstress who worked in a parachute manufacturing factory during World War II. She attended Waller (Now Lincoln Park) High School and was a longtime resident of the Northwest side Galewood Neighborhood of Chicago. She is survived by Three of her Four Sons, Philip, James & Mark. Her Son, Richard passed away in 2016.

Visitation will be Thursday November 21st from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Salerno Galewood Chapel, 1857 N. Harlem Avenue in Chicago.

Funeral Services on Friday Morning November 22nd. Starting from The Funeral Chapel at 9:00 with Services at 10:00 a.m. at St. Giles Catholic Church, 1045 N. Columbian Avenue in Oak Park, with a Private Burial.
