ROCK THE VOTE LAUNCHES DEMOCRACY CLASS TO EDUCATE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF VOTING, REGISTERING TO VOTE With the midterm elections not too far away, Rock the Vote, the 28-year-old nonpartisan nonprofit organization dedicated to engaging and building the political power of young people, has launched Democracy Class.

Democracy Class is being taught in over 2,000 schools across the country and is a high school curriculum on the history and importance of voting. The class culminates in registering and pre-registering students to vote.

Rock the Vote partnered with Teaching Tolerance, a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), to update and expand the Democracy Class curriculum, which was originally created in 2010. Rock the Vote is also working with the SPLC to mobilize its network of more than 400,000 teachers. The new curriculum includes additional lessons that cover the subjects of modern-day voting rights, how local elections relate to issues impacting their community, and the importance of civic participation. The Democracy Class initiative is being sponsored by American Eagle.

FIRST-EVER GOVERNOR’S SUMMIT SHOWCASES BEST PRACTICES, URGES EXPANSION Hundreds of business and workforce leaders recently met with Gov. Bruce Rauner, Illinois education officials and state agency representatives for a first-ever Governor’s Summit highlighting work-based learning initiatives statewide. Rauner who hosted the summit, entitled WORK LEARN GROW: Pathways to the Jobs of Illinois’ Future, spoke about Internships, apprenticeships and other work-based learning programs that provide Illinoisans with the hands-on training and that lead to a steady flow of skilled, ready workers for businesses.

“The importance of efforts on this front cannot be overemphasized. I applaud the leaders whose successful programs are being featured today, and I implore everyone to continue to expand this great work,” said Rauner.

The summit, held at Illinois Central College in East Peoria, is one result of a $80,000 grant awarded to Illinois by the National Governors Association to expand work-based learning programs. The inaugural Speak Truth Summit will take place on Oct. 20-21 at Chicago State University and the Jolly Pumpkin in Hyde Park. The Summit is presented by The Impact Alliance in collaboration with Chicago Black Women in Tech and Womanist Words. This two-day summit has been designed to restore, build, and empower women of color through networking, workshops, panel discussions and a keynote speech delivered by Alicia Garza.

“I think it’s without question that we live in a very critical time right now and unfortunately the issues that particularly impact women of color are often a second thought or not even talked about at all. For me, the main purpose for this summit is to give voice and visibility to those issues because they need to be addressed. I think women’s issues and women’s rights, in general, have been under attack for decades in many systems, personally or professionally, in our society. It’s important to acknowledge and recognize that these types of issues have

additional layers of trauma for women of color,” said Carla Kupe-Arion, founder and president of The Impact Alliance.

The Impact Alliance is a social justice and inclusion-focused organizational culture management consulting group with a mission to assist with creating organizational cultures that are diverse in all forms and inclusive in all aspects for the good of the organization as well as those they impact, according to a press release announcing the Speak Truth Summit.

The summit’s keynote speaker, Alicia Garza, is an Oakland-based organizer, writer, public speaker and freedom dreamer who is currently the Strategy and Partnership Director for the National Domestic Workers Alliance, the nation’s leading voice for dignity and fairness for the millions of domestic workers in the United States. She is the Principal of the Black Futures Lab, an initiative aimed at transforming Black communities into constituencies that build power in cities and states. Garza, along with Opal Tometi and Patrisse Cullors, also co-founded the Black Lives Matter network, a globally recognized organizing project that focuses

on combating anti-Black, state-sanctioned violence and the oppression of all Black people, according to a press release announcing the Speak Truth Summit.

“I don’t want to talk about it and just acknowledge these realities, I want us to think about what we can do right now especially with midterm elections coming up and all of the movements happening right now. I want to talk about what we can actually do to impact our personal and professional lives,” said Kupe-Arion.

The summit will include discussions on a variety of topics and over 30 diverse summit panelists and workshop leaders who will foster conversations on topics such as physical violence against women of color, reproductive justice as it relates to childbirth, intersectional feminism, religion and feminism, hostile work environments, internalizing and defining womanhood, entrepreneurship, and running for office, according to a press release announcing the Speak Truth Summit.

The SOPHY Hyde Park Hotel Is Officially Open For Business

A ribbon cutting ceremony was recently held for the SOPHY Hyde Park, a brand new 98-room boutique hotel in Chicago’s historic Hyde Park neighborhood. The hotel was co-developed

by SMART Hotels LLC and The Olympia Companies and is managed by Olympia Hotel Management.

SOPHY Hyde Park is located at 1411 East 53rd St. near the site of the future Barack Obama Presidential Center, the University of Chicago and the Museum of Science and Industry. The hotel features a full-service restaurant, Mesler Kitchen, and is a member of the Preferred Hotels and Resorts Lifestyle Collection.

“Chicago, for decades and decades, has been known as a big convention town but increasingly what we also know is that lifestyle hotels, boutique hotels, and neighborhoods have become so much more important in terms of the fabric of a tourism destination. People want real experiences when they travel. They want to be in neighborhoods that they identify

with, they want to find the newest coolest things, to stay off the beaten path, and to see the history of a community represented. The design of the guest rooms was inspired by the history of art in Hyde Park and each room is embellished with an 8 foot abstract painting by local artist Joey Korom, and is finished with books, ornaments and even a record player with a selection of local musicians on vinyl, according to a press from SOPHY Hyde Park.

“We now have the first upscale boutique hotel in Hyde

Park ever. As a former resident, continuing to be a part of this ever-growing vibrant neighborhood and being with everyone here today in the community is such a blessing. This couldn’t have been done without a number of partners and a number of community members to get to this point,” said Anthony Beach, general manager of SOPHY Hyde Park.

Several people at the ribbon cutting ceremony spoke about the valuable partnerships that made this project work. A variety of people were involved at every stage of development including executives from SMART Hotel and the Olympia Companies, the local Aldermen, members of the community, and even students from the local high school. Everyone was invited to share their vision for SOPHY Hyde Park.

“This is truly a community event because so many people participated in making this happen,” said 5th Ward Alderman, Leslie Hairston.

Exhibition On Modern Design Opens At Chicago History Museum Inspired by modern technology, streamlined design emerged during the early 1930s and became one of the most popular design styles in history.

Discover how Chicago brought modern design to the American marketplace in the new exhibition, “Modern by Design: Chicago Streamlines America,” opening Saturday, October 27, 2018 at the Chicago History Museum.

The exhibition is presented as part of the yearlong Art Design Chicago initiative of the Terra Foundation for American Art. “Chicago is world famous for modern architecture but its contributions to modern design are often overlooked,” said Olivia Mahoney, senior curator at the Chicago History

Museum. “This exhibition explores how Chicago shaped the look and feel of modern America with streamlined graphics, products and interior design.”

Visitors will discover how Chicago introduced streamlined design on a mass scale at the 1933-34 Chicago world’s fair and how Chicago companies subsequently adapted the style to make a wide range of products for American consumers who wanted the latest look and technology in their homes and workplaces.

Nearly 300 objects, photographs and documents from the 1930s-1950s trace this compelling story. Objects on view, many for the first time, include: Tubular steel furniture designed

Sequence Ch!cago Returns to Navy Pier with Talented Lineup of Local Artists

or the second consecutive year, Navy Pier is welcoming the fall/winter season with Sequence Ch!cago, a free dynamic performance series that features local artists, musicians and cultural organizations by showcasing their works across the Pier’s various unique platforms.

Over the course of 10 dates between Now and December 19, Sequence Ch!cago will spotlight talented performers from across the city who have inspired and influenced Chicago’s diverse arts scene. Supported by a grant from the Paul M. Angell Family Foundation, the music performances are free and open to the public.

Managing Your Mental Health With Or Without Insurance Coverage ered.

(NAPSI)—Mental health is synonymous with mental wellness. At some point many people will struggle with their mental health. Just like caring for physical health occasionally requires a visit with a physician, caring for mental health may require visiting a mental health professional and, of course, figuring out a way to pay for it.

Insurance Coverage and Payment Options When a person is unable to manage daily activities such as maintaining fulfilling relationships, working productively, coping with the stresses of life, or even recognizing one’s own potential, he or she may be struggling to stay mentally healthy—whether he or she is able to recognize it or not.

If a person has health insurance, it may be helpful to consult with a primary care doctor who could make referrals to local services. When individuals do not have a primary care doctor, they can also use their insurer’s website or call center to locate mental health professionals for treatment.

• Individuals who have insurance through an employer should check the Summary of Benefits and Coverage for information on covered mental health and behavioral services. The Transamerica Center for Health Studies (TCHS) Consumer Healthcare Survey found that 54 percent of respondents have access to employer-sponsored programs for mental health or substance abuse, but only 21 percent of employees were enrolled in these programs.

• The Affordable Care Act requires health insurance purchased through the state Exchange to cover mental health, substance use disorder services and behavioral treatment for current or pre-existing conditions.

• Poor access to and treatment for mental health can be debilitating for veterans. VA Care is provided at government-owned facilities for veterans only, while TRICARE is the government-provided insurance plan for active-duty or retired service members (and their dependents) at private and public facilities, or military health clinics and hospitals. The VA also offers Service-Connected Disability Compensation, which provides a tax-free monthly benefit for veterans who are at least 10 percent disabled because of injuries or diseases that were incurred in or aggravated during active duty, active duty for training or inactive duty training.

• Medicare is a government-funded program that covers almost every senior citizen in the United States. Medicare Part B covers a free yearly depression screening, mental health counseling or therapy visits, as well as outpatient services such as individual and group psychotherapy. The costs and drugs covered with Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan will vary by plan, but almost all drugs classified as antidepressants, antipsychotics and anticonvulsants are required to be cov-

Options for the Uninsured According to a 2017 report from Mental Health America, more than 7.5 million people with a mental illness are uninsured. Paying for mental health services without insurance can be costly, but there are some options available, including: • Medicaid—A joint federal and state program that provides free or low-cost health coverage for disabled persons, low-income adults, and pregnant women. Every state implements its own guidelines, so coverage may vary. For years, Medicaid has been the largest payer of mental health-related services in the United States.

• Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)—In 2017, an estimated 9.4 million children were covered under CHIP, funded jointly by states and the federal government for uninsured children up to age 19. Like Medicaid, CHIP guidelines are also implemented by each state, so eligibility for coverage may vary.

In addition, there are many facilities and centers that provide services for those with mental health and or substance use disorder needs at a lower cost or work within a patient’s insurance policy: • Mental Health America affiliate locations are nonprofit organizations found in 41 states that help patients navigate the mental health system, providing education, support services and rehabilitation services.

• The Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration features a behavioral health treatment facilities locator where you can specify the kind of behavioral health services you are looking for, your insurance type (e.g., Medicaid, Medicare, etc.) and payment ability (e.g., sliding scale fee, cash, etc.).

• With more than 1,000 National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) affiliate locations and state organizations, NAMI lists free resources and educational programs.

• Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics receive Medicaid reimbursement for their mental health and substance use disorder services, including 24-hour crisis care coordination, evidencebased practices and integrated physical care. These facilities are currently available in eight states: Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon and Pennsylvania.

Sisters Together: Move More, Eat Better (NAPSI)—Obesity is a serious health problem in the United States.

More than one in three U.S. adults have obesity and that number increases to more than half—57 percent—among U.S. black women.

Research has shown that excess weight may contribute to high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease and certain kinds of cancer.

To help address the problem of obesity, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) has updated the program guide for the popular Sisters Together: Move More, Eat Better national health awareness program. It encourages black women to reach and maintain a healthy weight by being more physically active and making healthier food choices.

• Steps to help evaluate and sustain a program

Sisters Together began in 1994 as a pilot program conducted by the NIDDK’s Weight-control Information Network (WIN) and several partners in Boston. Based on the success of the pilot program, WIN created the program guide and other resources to support the development of local Sisters Together programs nationwide. Over the past 20 years, local groups across the country have formed partnerships with health centers, local media, recreation centers and other groups to start new Sisters Together programs.

The NIDDK updated the Sisters Together program guide to include: • Recent data regarding African American obesity rates • Evidence-based strategies to promote regular physical activity and healthy food choices among black women • Highlights from Sisters Together programs developed by different groups around the country • Tips to create a budget to fund a program • Information on how to grow and manage program interest using social media

Still Point Theatre Collective is a dynamic community of Chicago-based artists who use theatre to uplift, inform and inspire, and make a difference in the lives of underrepresented individuals. It was founded by actress, poet and social

Still Point serves the community through two main branches of programming: producing original professional plays, and providing arts outreach programs to marginalized communities. Edwina Gateley is a poet, theologian, writer, artist and lay minister from Lancaster, England. Her life has been described by Publisher’s Weekly as “fascinating – an exceptional blend of contemplation and action”. Her journey has led her to teaching in Africa, founding the Volunteer Missionary Movement (VMM), sojourning in the Sahara Desert,
