NEWS briefly SOUTHEAST CALUMET HEIGHTS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION TO HOST GLAM AND DAPPER DAY Southeast Calumet Heights Homeowners Association will host “Glam and Dapper Day,” an on-site vaccination event from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2, at Compassion Baptist Church, located at 2650 E. 95th St. The event is free and open to the public. It will include a mobile vaccine unit, barbers will provide haircuts, nail technicians will provide manicures, makeup artists will give makeovers, and there will be a game truck. Those who get vaccinated will receive a free t-shirt.

This is the second event hosted by the Southeast Calumet Heights Association, Phalanx Family Services and Compassion Baptist Church. The events are part of the Chicago Vaccine Project, a targeted vaccine program designed to reach individuals and communities that have been most impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

ARTS + PUBLIC LIFE CELEBRATES GRAND OPENING OF L1 RETAIL STORE Arts + Public Life (APL), an initiative of UChicago Arts at the University of Chicago, is inviting the community to celebrate its 10 year anniversary with the grand opening of L1, a newly renovated retail store housing three South Side Black-owned businesses inside of Chicago’s first historic “L” station built in 1892. The ‘Back On The Block’ free open house event will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9, along the 300 East Block of Garfield Blvd.

The L1 retail space is an extension of the L1 creative business accelerator (CBA) fellowship program launched in August 2020 by Arts + Public Life in partnership with The Silver Room Foundation’s urban planning and social impact arm, Proximity. The L1 program provides both a 20-month fellowship and 700 square feet of subsidised shared brick and mortar retail space for the inaugural cohort of three South Side entrepreneurs dedicated to scaling their creative businesses over the next two years– Peter Gaona of ReformedSchool, Tiffany Joi of Hemp Heals Body Shop, and Andrea Polk of Solo Noir and Zen Soul Apothecary.

“In addition to receiving business training and mentorship, the opening of the L1 retail store rounds out the offerings of the Creative Business Accelerator fellowship as a new platform for our fellows to offer their products to the public. The opening of the L1 coincides with the commemoration of Arts + Public Life’s 10 year anniversary which will allow the public to learn more about our history, current projects, and future plans,” said APL Director Adrienne Brown.

Blood Donation Events Highlight Need For Blood In Our Communities Continued from page 1

The Sickle Cell Awareness Month is recognized in September and the Community Blood Center commemorated the month by hosting blood drives to encourage people of color to donate blood.

The Community Blood Center has locations in Chicago, Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It was founded in 1955 to supply blood to hospitals in the Midwest region. It relies on volunteer blood donors. It was extended to Chicago in 2018 to help and engage the community with blood donation.

“There is no substitute for blood. When a patient is facing Sickle Cell Anemia or Cancer treatment or surgical procedures, it is important for volunteer blood donors to help ensure that blood is readily available,” said Tammy Winchester, the Chicago Community Outreach Manager for the Community Blood Center. Blood transfusions are needed for those patients’ conditions and their therapeutic therapy. The Community Blood Center helps those patients by pro-

viding that blood from its blood drives.

African-Americans and Latinx populations have made progress over the years with donating blood more often than previously, but the need is constant for blood donation.

“Coming out of the pandemic, we are trying with all our efforts to increase the participation of blood donation,” Winchester said.

The numbers for blood donation among African-Americans and Latinx are slowly creeping up. Winchester said people are realizing with blood donation there is an opportunity to help someone else and it doesn’t cost them anything. There is also an education piece with more literature out there that encourages people to donate blood in the community.

“We want to see this cycle to continue, not just a curve of going up and down, we want to see it continue,” Winchester said.

“We want to see people, African-American and Latinx donate as often as they can.”

There is a constant need for blood. Every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood. People can donate blood every 56 days. The goal is to make sure people who rely on blood can have it available.

At the Blood Drives anywhere from 10 to 50 people donate. At a recent blood drive that took place Saturday, September 25th, hosted in partnership with My Block, My City, My Hood.

The Cook County Commissioner Bill Lowry will host an Inaugural Men’s Health Fair from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30, at Apostolic Church of God Family Center, located at 6320 S. Dorchester. The Community Blood Center will be there to facilitate a Blood Drive.

To donate blood, you must weigh at least 110 lbs., and be in good general health.

People aged 17 and older are eligible to give blood. Youth ages 16 can donate blood with parental consent. There is a brief screening, with around 50 questions before donating blood. The whole process can take from 30 to 45 minutes.

People who donate should stay hydrated, sleep well, and prior to donation, consume high iron food and protein such as a– hamburger or drink red wine.

First Day Attendance for Rates for 2021-22 School Year Data Demonstrates that Unprecedented Outreach Efforts Impacted First-Day Attendance Chicago Public Schools (CPS) today announced that despite ongoing concerns regarding the Covid delta variant, more than 91 percent of students attended the first day of in-person classes -- a slight decrease of nearly 3 percent compared to the 2019-2020 school year, when classes were last held in-person. This is the first time students started the school year prior to Labor Day weekend in more than a decade.

“Our top priority over the summer was to re-engage families and ensure they had what they needed for the new school year,” said Interim CPS CEO Dr. José M. Torres.

“With the switch to full in-person learning and the start of the school year before Labor Day, the district launched an unprecedented outreach effort and contacted tens of thousands of students. The district is so grateful to the many CPS employees, school-based staff, volunteers and community partners who helped engage students

and ensure they had critical information leading up to the first day.”

This year, the district re-launched traditional in-person back-to-school events, while also undertaking an unprecedented outreach effort to ensure families were informed, prepared and aware of protocols ahead of the 2021-22 school year. As part of these efforts, thousands of CPS employees, community based organizations, and parent volunteers successfully connected with or visited the homes of more than 85,000 of students, with contact attempts for nearly all students in the highest-needs categories. The district also launched a robust community engagement, marketing

and communications effort to ensure parents were aware of the first day of school (which began before Labor Day) and had important information about protocols and resources.

The SPI is a holistic, data based, metric that helped schools and the district identify which students needed the greatest level of support. The prioritization index looks at data in the areas of student engagement, academic performance, and social emotional need, as well as community-based factors, including COVID-19 case rates.

The federal government created the American Rescue Plan to change the course of the pandemic and deliver immediate relief to American workers. In Illinois alone, over 400,000 Illinois residents were laid off because of the pandemic. In order to ensure these workers are able to regain employment, Gov. Pritzker and the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity released $20 million for workforce recovery and $4.4 million for the Youth Career Pathways Program.

Lightford also recently championed the Education and Workforce Equity Act, part of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus’s four-pillar agenda to eliminate systemic racism in the state. The act requires the Illinois Workforce Innovation Board to create a study to determine the feasibility of consolidating all workforce development programs under a single agency.

The Workforce Equity and Access Commission will conduct the study to explore the potential benefits of consolidating workforce programs created under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act into a single state agency. The commission will also examine whether consolidation could increase access to job training for underserved populations.

“The commission was created to help level the playing field in our workforce development system and ensure everyone has equal access to quality career opportunities,” Lightford said.

“Most importantly, it was created to evaluate the impact of systemic racism on the experience of participants in the workforce system—understanding the problem is the first step toward solving it.”

Grilled Turkey Club with Orange Juice-Infused Aioli

(Family Features) With a return to busy fall routines, it can be challenging for many families to find the time to sit down at the table for nutritious meals.

To make turkey club: Spread 2-3 teaspoons aioli on four bread slices. Spread watercress on top of aioli. Top watercress with turkey, cheese and remaining bread slices.

VIOLIFE® Plant Grants Awards $100K to Five Black-Owned Restaurants New program aims to make plant-based eating more accessible with support from legendary hip-hop artist RZA and vegan chef pioneers Lemel Durrah and Laricia Chandler Baker HACKENSACK, N.J. Stepping up when it matters most Last year, we committed $1.25 billion over five years to build on our long-standing work in support of driving racial equality and economic opportunity. To date, we’ve directly funded or invested nearly $400 million of this commitment, in addition to other ways we continue to make an impact in our communities.

Our actions include: •

$36 million to 21 Minority Deposit Institutions (MDIs) and Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) banks that support minority-owned businesses. This is in addition to our approximately $100 million in deposits to MDIs and our existing $1.8 billion CDFI portfolio.

•

$300 million to 100 equity funds to provide capital to diverse entrepreneurs and small business owners

•

$10 million grant to fund the Center for Black Entrepreneurship (CBE), in partnership with Spelman and Morehouse colleges

•

$25 million to 21 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-serving institutions (HSIs) and community colleges in support of job skilling and placement

•

Establishing new partnerships and coalitions focused on building skills and creating job opportunities for people of color

•

$60 million to increase access to capital and career opportunities for Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) affordable housing developers

•

33 million+ masks, more than 272,000 bottles of hand sanitizer and 8 million gloves to communities in need

•

$1.35 million in grants to support mental health initiatives for young people of color

•

$25 million founding partnership in the Smithsonian’s new initiative on race, Our Shared Future: Reckoning with Our Racial Past

These are just some examples of how we’re working with community partners, business leaders, experts and academics across the public and private sectors to continue to drive progress.
