THE COGNITIVE CONNECTION: BLOOD PRESSURE AND BRAIN DECLINE The American Heart Association (AHA) estimates that more than 100 million adults in the United States are living with high blood pressure.

That’s almost half the adult population in the country.

Now, new research suggests there is yet another reason for middle-aged and older adults to keep a close watch on their blood pressure: hypertension can impair cognitive abilities as a person ages. Researchers studied nearly 11,000 adults to find how the condition affects a person’s memory, language, and thinking skills.

“What it basically showed is if you have hypertension, and if it’s not being treated, your risk of declining cognition, or cognitive function is higher,” explained Dr. Sudhir Mungee, an interventional cardiologist at OSF HealthCare Cardiovascular Institute. He continued, “In fact, people who are appropriately treated, their declined rate was the same as people who did not have high blood pressure. So it’s clearly defining hypertension as one of the risk factors for cognitive skills lost.”

Project SYNCERE, a local nonprofit focusing on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning for youth, will soon celebrate its 10th anniversary since being founded by three African American engineers in 2009. Project SYNCERE will commemorate its 10th anniversary by hosting the inaugural Power of Ten gala on Oct. 10.

“Project SYNCERE is an organization that I started 10 years ago with two friends.

We were really interested in figuring out how to get more young people, specifically from underserved communities in Chicago, exposed and excited about careers in engineering,” said Jason Coleman, co-founder and executive director of Project SYNCERE. “10 years ago, STEM wasn’t a very popular subject and it wasn’t the buzz word that it is today. We saw the need for more young people to have opportunities for exposure and to have opportunities to realize that there is a whole world out there where they can be the creators of technology and the things

that are changing our world.”

Over the last 10 years, Project SYNCERE has grown to be one of the largest STEM educational providers in Chicago and has a team of over 25 people that serve nearly 4,000 students annually, according to information provided by Project SYNCERE. All year long, Project SYNCERE operates its E-CADEMY program which offers students an opportunity to bridge their learning from middle school through high school to prepare them for college and entrance into engineering careers, according to information provided by Project SYNCERE. Additionally, Project SYNCERE launched the ENpowered Games which is an engineering competition for middle schoolers that attracts hundreds of students from Chicago’s south and west side communities each year.

“Growing up, I never knew what an engineer was but I was lucky enough to be able to go to college and be able to study engineering and become an engineer. We really wanted to give more young people those opportunities that we didn’t have,” said Coleman.

Besides exposure to engineering and other STEM careers, Project SYNCERE is unique in that it is led by three black men who have worked as professional engineers.

Coleman said growing up, he never saw a black engineer and had very few mentors as he navigated through college and broke into the workforce.

“While working in corporate America for roughly nine years, I was the only African American working on any of my teams and that was a problem for me,” said Coleman.

“We created Project SYNCERE to ensure that young people who come from our communities and who look like us have the opportunities to thrive.”

Students who participate in programming provided by Project SYNCERE can see first hand that a career in engineering is attainable for African Americans and receive mentoring from Coleman, the other cofounders, and Project SYNCERE staff members.

“We are three African American men who are really passionate about improving the conditions of our community through education,” said Coleman.

Victims of Domestic Violence Often Stuck With Financial Debt Women leaving abusive relationships suffer from more than the physical injuries and emotional shockwaves caused by their former partners. New research from Michigan State University uncovers the troubling financial situation women face due to “coerced debt” their partners place in their names, jeopardizing their chances of starting over and building a life of their own.

Coerced debt is created when an abusive partner uses coercion or fraud to access credit in their partner’s name. For example, an abuser might force or threaten the victim to take out a loan or use a credit card against her will; or, an abuser might use a victim’s information to take out a loan or credit card without her knowledge.

“Coerced debt is a particularly damaging form of intimate partner abuse. It can have severe consequences for domestic abuse survivors’ economic well-being,” said Adrienne Adams, MSU associate professor of psychology and lead author of the study, which is published in the journal, Violence Against Women. “Our research shows how prevalent this issue is, the forms it takes and how it affects victims.”

Survivors carrying coerced debt oftentimes suffer from plummeting credit scores, which means more difficulty opening new credit cards.

“Credit is necessary to access other resources. When someone puts loans in your name, for example, if that debt goes unpaid and destroys your credit, it can ruin your ability to find safe housing, get an affordable car and even find a job,” Adams said. “In this way, coerced debt can destroy a survivor’s chances to start over. It

can make it harder for them to access the resources they need – and leave them with a tremendous financial obligation to pay back.”

Adams – and co-authors Angela Littwin and McKenzie Javorka – analyzed survey data about experiences with coerced debt from approximately 2,000 women who called into the National Domestic Violence Hotline.

Fifty-two percent of the women who called into the hotline experienced coerced debt. Abusers having control over financial information, credit damage, and victims’ financial dependence on their abusers were also commonly reported.

“Pilot interviews we conducted with survivors for another study suggested that there’s a pattern of abusers hiding financial information and taking out debt in their partners’ names,” Adams said. “These seem to go hand-in-hand: if you keep your partner from having access to the mail, for example, you’re able to hide fraudulent debt and continue to perpetrate the abuse.”

In this study, more than 70% of the survivors said that their partner hid financial information from them, and the researchers found that these women were 3.6 times more likely to have coerced debt. Forty-six percent

of the survivors said their credit was damaged because of their abusive partners and women with coerced debt were six times more likely to have their credit damaged by an abusive partner.

The women with coerced debt were 2.5 times more likely to have reported financial dependence on their abuser than women without coerced debt, with nearly 75% of the women saying that they stayed longer in relationships with someone who was controlling because of concerns related to financially supporting themselves or their children.

Adams explained that coerced

debt places an additional financial burden on survivors.

“Making payments on coerced debt cuts into the money survivors have to pay rent or put food on the table. This can put survivors in a position of having to make tradeoffs – having to ask yourself, ‘do I buy groceries or pay rent?’ – to meet basic needs,” Adams said. “And if the debt went undiscovered or unpaid, the victim’s credit may be damaged, increasing the cost of accessing credit in the future.”

Married victims may pursue divorce to escape an abusive relationship, but the coerced debt follows them.

“Something that is not commonly understood is that a divorce judgement does not change the contract with the creditor.” Adams said. “This means that while a judge can order the abusive partner to pay off the coerced debt, from the creditor’s perspective the debt remains the responsibility of the person whose name the debt is in. The creditor can continue to try to collect from the victim. Getting relief from the debt hinges on the abuser following the judge’s order.”

Adams said she hopes that her findings shed light on this serious – yet understudied – form of abuse.

Advocates can develop strategies to help women uncover and manage debt, as well as fight against fraudulent and coercive loans. Adams also hopes that the findings will be useful for policymakers taking steps to develop legislation to protect coerced debt victims.

Northeastern Illinois University will host the “Telling Our Own Stories” Community Writing Workshop run by Chicago Sun-Times journalist and author John Fountain from Sept. 28 through Oct. 19 at the Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies. A kickoff presentation will take place Sept. 26.

These workshops are intended to encourage personal story-writing as a way to provide the first drafts of history, uncover the stories that often go missing—particularly those from poor and minority communities—and to promote an insider perspective on people, problems and possibilities in a community, neighborhood and city.

One would expect that entrepreneurs who pitch their startup ideas with passion are more apt to entice investors. Now there’s scientific proof the two are connected: enthusiasm and financial backing.

According to new research from Case Western Reserve University, the brains of potential investors are wired to pay closer attention to entrepreneurs who pitch with passion.

Researchers examined investors’ neural responses to entrepreneurs’ pitches, conducting a randomized experiment that explored the response of investors’ brains using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI)—finding a causal relationship between passion of the pitcher and interest from investors.

“No one has ever invested in a startup they ignored,” said Scott Shane, the A. Malachi Mixon III Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies in the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve.

“Founder passion is essential to establishing investor attention, and our study demonstrates measurable neural effects that offer a biological explanation for their tendency to react positively to enthusiasm and emotion

of entrepreneurs,” said Shane, lead author of the paper, published in the Journal of Business Venturing.

By showing such energy in pitching their business ideas, entrepreneurs can considerably increase neural engagement in potential investors— increasing the odds these financiers will support a new, untested venture by having strong, measurable effects on their decision-making.

“Most of time investors just say ‘no,’” said Shane. “In fact, the vast majority of entrepreneurs never receive a dime from external investors.

“Entrepreneurs should know: More engaged brains are more likely to meaningfully evaluate pitches,” he said. “We believe our data makes a strong argument that displays of passion trigger heightened engagement that, in turn, makes investors more likely to write a check.”

The experiment Videos of pitches—identical in content but different in delivery— were randomly assigned to investors inside an fMRI machine. Depending on the passion-level of the pitch, investors’ brains reacted differently: Heightened displays of passion increased investor fixation on the stimulus (the pitch) to override distractions—and demonstrate a causal effect of displayed passion on investor interest. l Investors randomly assigned a pitch with high founder passion resulted in informal investor interest increasing by 26%, relative to the same pitch delivered with low passion; l Data from fMRIs showed investor neural responses to entrepreneurs’ high-passion pitches increased investor neural engagement by 39% over lower

founder passion.

“More engaged brains are more likely to meaningfully evaluate pitches—and not play on their phones or think about lunch—which should result in more favorable investor assessments,” said Shane.

While it’s possible that other mechanisms may be present in the brains of investors—such as inferring from passion that entrepreneurs may be more capable or competent—the experiment showed that passion is a key mechanism because it causes investors to pay attention, said Shane.

Practicing passion The findings offer strong implications for the practice of entrepreneurship.

“Pitching with enthusiasm and passion—these are skills that can be taught,” said Shane. “Flat, unenthusiastic pitches are the enemy of attracting investor attention and to succeeding in a competitive, cutthroat environment.”

Each year, hundreds of thousands of early-stage entrepreneurs, who often lack established track records, offer pitches—widely recognized as the gateway to investor funding—to financiers across the globe.

The study focused on Informal investors—referred to as “family, friends and foolhardy strangers” by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor—who account for most startup investments, investing $1 trillion globally between 2012-2015, according to the organization.

The study was co-authored by David Clingingsmith, an associate professor of economics at the Weatherhead School. Will Drover of the University of Oklahoma, and Moran Cerf of Northwestern University also co-authored the paper.

Tips for Seniors to Ensure a Healthy Road Trip

(StatePoint) When thinking about road trips, you might envision college kids heading on adventures, but older adults take road trips, too, according to a recent survey by Cigna.

Travel is a top priority for 37 percent of older adult respondents in the survey. In fact, more than 30 percent said they take three or more trips annually.

With automobiles topping the list of older adults’ favorite ways to travel, Cigna is offering helpful tips for heading out on the highway.

• Get shut-eye. The National Sleep Foundation recommends people 65 years and older get seven to eight hours sleep nightly. Unfortunately, 17 percent of older adults responding to the survey indicated they have trouble maintaining sleep schedules when traveling. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 91,000 crashes occurred in 2017 due to drowsy driving, resulting in 50,000 injuries and nearly 800 deaths.

Repeated yawning is the first warning sign that it’s time to pull over and rest.

• Stretch your legs. Some long-distance travelers are at risk of a potentially dangerous condition called deep vein thrombosis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Though you should talk tO your doctor if you feel you’re at risk, it’s a good idea for everyone to take breaks to stretch and walk around.

• Keep eyes healthy. Good eyesight is critical to safe driving. Before long trips, make sure you’ve had an eye exam and your prescription is up-to-date.

Many Medicare Advantage plans cover annual eye exams and glasses.

• Prioritize safety. Twelve percent of older adults responding to the survey said they travel alone. Solo travelers should prioritize safety. Tell friends and family your route, destination and when to expect you. Also, check in occasionally so they know your trip is progressing well.

• Eat healthfully. Twenty-six percent of traveling seniors have difficulty eating healthfully while traveling, according to the survey. Avoid stocking the car with junk food. Instead, pack nutritious snacks, like fruits and vegetables.

Plan ahead, finding restaurants with healthy fare along your route. If you have to eat fast food, make healthy choices like salads. Finally, drink water instead of soda. It’s healthier and will better hydrate you.

• Pack prescriptions. According to the Cigna survey, 96 percent of senior travelers get a large enough prescription supply to last the entire trip. One way to do this is by getting a 90-day fill.

Write down your medication schedule and the names and numbers of your doctors and pharmacy in case you need them. If you have questions about changing time zones, talk to your pharmacist before leaving. Always carry medications in their original labeled containers to prevent anyone from mistaking them for other substances.

• Act quickly. For health-related emergencies, time is of the essence, so go to the nearest emergency room or hospital or call 911 as quickly as possible and then notify your insurance plan as soon as you reasonably can.

“Travel is an important part of older adults’ independence,” says Shannon Adams, who leads the Cigna customer experience team that completed the travel survey. “With a little planning and by knowing their limits, they can reach their destinations in good health.”

How Close Is Too Close When It Comes to Living Near Your Family?

StatePoint - While you can’t choose your family, you can choose how close you live to them. A new survey suggests some healthy boundaries between parents and in-laws make for a happier family relationship -something to keep in mind when shopping for a home.

Fifty-seven percent of respondents in the survey from Ally Home, the direct-toconsumer mortgage arm of Ally Bank, say there should be at least some driving distance between where their parents and/or in-laws live and where they live. An even greater percentage of gen Z respondents (63 percent) -- and millennials (62 percent) -- felt some distance was important.

“We’re deep into the home buying season, and we’re seeing first-hand how excited consumers are to find and then be able to afford the home of their dreams,” says Glenn Brunker, mortgage executive with Ally Home. “But as Ally Home goes through that home-buying journey with them, it’s clear that there’s more than just the house and yard that go into making a home the right fit.

Buyers are thinking through things like the neighborhood, school system, access to good hospitals, and yes, just how near or far they prefer to be to family.”

Other survey findings included:

love their adult children, they don’t want them living with them. Millennials don’t like how things are trending, either. They worry more than any other age group that at some point they will have their adult children, their parents or in-laws living with them.

• Proximity is a Top Stressor: The survey also presented respondents with a number of stress points and asked which ones ranked top when dealing with family. Thirty-eight percent of respondents named “living within five minutes of parents or in-laws” as their top stressor, out-ranking “cooking a complicated meal for a mother or mother-in-law” and “hosting family for the holidays.”

“Much of a person’s preference regarding location has to do with cultural norms, since extended families living together or nearby one another is common in certain cultures.

But more often, having some physical distance between family can help create a healthy boundary. Ultimately, it’s up to family members to be open and honest about their own boundaries and what makes them most comfortable,” says William X. Kelly, a marriage and family therapist.

A good choice for a home is one that makes you happy. When shopping for a home, don’t forget to take the family factor into consideration.

Lifeline Theatre presents Whose Body? In this adaptation of a classic whodunit by Dorothy L. Sayers, Amateur Detective Lord Peter Wimsey steps in when a dead body is found in a bathtub wearing nothing but a pair of pince-nez. He enlists the help of close friend Inspector Parker to follow a lead at the local teaching hospital, but the case soon turns sinister as they discover it’s not a harmless prank by a student. 26th Annual Barkapalooza Dog Walkathon and Expo to Benefit the West Suburban Humane Society West Suburban Humane Society (WSHS wshs-dg.org) celebrates everything dog-related at their annual 26th Barkapalooza. This half-day, family-friendly fest for dogs and their people will return to Lisle Community Park located on 1825 Short Street in Lisle, Illinois) on Sunday, September 29, 2019, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. This extremely dog-friendly event allows pet owners, prospective pet adopters, and all-around pet lovers to raise money for homeless dogs and cats through a Dog Walkathon and Pet Expo. Participants are encouraged to collect pledges for the walkathon, and all proceeds will support the West Suburban Humane Society, at this signature annual fundraiser.

Animal lovers can explore the Pet Expo at Barkapalooza, for a $20 donation fee. The Expo will feature a wide variety of pet-focused vendors and breed-specific rescue groups.

There will be entertainment and activities for kids plus food truck vendors with both foods for humans and dogs. Barkapalooza will occur rain or shine, and there is ample free parking.

The adult event fee for the walkathon is $20, while children 12 and under may walk for free and all receive a goody bag for registering in the walk.
