NEWS briefly SLAUGHTER-SUPPORTED LAW ENDS UNIVERSITY ADMISSION STANDARDIZED TEST SCORE REQUIREMENTS To promote diversity and inclusion at Illinois colleges, state Rep. Justin Slaughter, D-Chicago, recently supported legislation that will prohibit Illinois’ public colleges and universities from requiring applicants to submit ACT and SAT test scores in the application process.

“Standardized test scores do not reflect a clear picture of a student’s academic career,” said Slaughter. “Instead, they have too often served as a barrier to entry to higher education.

While some students have the means to receive test prep and an ability to take multiple tests, most do not have this advantage, particularly first-generation and low-income students.”

House Bill 226, which was recently signed into law by Gov. J.B. Pritzker after passing out of the General Assembly with strong bipartisan support, will prohibit public institutions of higher learning from requiring applicants to submit standardized test scores as part of their admission processes.

In the place of test scores, college admissions committees will give more consideration to a student’s GPA, extracurriculars and letters of recommendation. This legislation aims to increase the number of students at colleges from diverse backgrounds like those from rural areas and first-generation and low-income families. If an applicant wishes to still submit a standardized test score, they will be able to do so.

“We must do all that we can to make sure that our young people are prepared for the future,” said Slaughter. “Illinois is a diverse state, it’s one of our greatest strengths, and I look forward to seeing how this change can help more residents of all backgrounds achieve a degree.”

DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATORS TO APPLY FOR ACCESS TO finEDge High school educators nationwide who are new to teaching financial education can apply through Sept. 30 for complimentary access to finEDge during the 2021-22 academic year. Local school districts and interested parents are advised to share this information immediately with high school educators who may be interested in applying. The deadline was recently extended to give more teachers time to apply. finEDge is a semester-long financial education curriculum designed by educators, researchers, and curriculum developers at the University of Chicago Financial Education Initiative in partnership with the Magnetar Capital Foundation. Here are some additional details: The underlying philosophy of the program is to teach sound financial decision-making rather than simply transmit financial information and facts.

The research-based curriculum is focused on developing students’ knowledge while fostering productive attitudes and behaviors around money. Simultaneously, finEDge strengthens teachers’ content knowledge and confidence by providing professional development and ongoing support.

With a serious respect for the personal situation of each student, the curriculum responsibly acknowledges and addresses the range of financial learners’ realities and economic environments, including systemic barriers and inequities.

This summer the University of Chicago launched a Youth Internship Program. The program paid Chicago Public High School students and paired them with an internship supervisor in different units throughout the University.

There were 10 students who participated in the program this year remotely. There is an aim to expand to 30 students next year and ultimately get to 100 students by 2024.

Deijah Beatty is a junior at Kenwood Academy High School who participated in the University of Chicago Youth Internship Program. Beatty wanted to get exposure to different professional careers and have skills to add to her resume and to her college applications, as well as expand her professional network.

Beatty who was placed at the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering wants to become a neonatal surgeon.

Her interest in STEM was developed through classes she took at the school.

She learned how to participate in research projects during her time in the internship. She also learned how to create a resume and craft a personal statement.

“My experience was very rewarding,

it was very engaging, as well. I got an opportunity to do a lot of tasks that many high school students wouldn’t be privy to. I also got a lot of opportunities to take leadership over projects,” she said.

Abel Ochoa is the Executive Director of College Readiness and Access within the Office of Civic Engagement at the University of Chicago. The program partnered with different schools in the University. The Pritzker School was one of the first to agree to accept interns. The program worked to pair interns with offices and site locations that would be mutually beneficial.

To help students to prepare, one day out of the week there was professional development and education date for them. Those days were meant to strengthen and introduce skill sets students needed in order to perform their tasks and projects.

Students learned how to draft a personal e-mail, to initiate a conversation with their supervisor and how to ask for help. Students also were given mentors who were undergraduate students from the college that met with those students weekly. Those undergraduate mentors checked on the interns to identify potential skill gaps related to what the students were working on.

The students also worked direct-

ly with their office and department managers and supervisors. They supported the students, coaching them and introducing skills that were necessary for them to be successful in their role.

Rico-Beck was Beatty’s supervisor.

Rico-Beck interviewed Beatty when she applied to the program, so she already knew her and knew that she had the focus, maturity, and skills to be successful in the program.

Each day, Rico-Beck and Beatty had a morning meeting to establish tasks for the day, and an end of day meeting where Beatty reported what she achieved and what challenges she faced. That system seemed to work out well.

“She really did exhibit some unique aspects of leadership, not necessarily in the sense of leading others through things, but actually understanding overall goals of a project. Then also the ability to figure out what the intermediate steps were and how to get them accomplished. Also, when she needed to ask for additional resources.

Along all of those fronts, Deijah did an outstanding job, well exceeding my expectations,” Rico-Beck said.

Jesse White Awards Over $5.6 Million in Adult Literacy Grants Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White awarded over $5.6 million in Adult Literacy Grants to help students develop and enhance their reading, math, writing and English-language skills.

“An estimated two million Illinois residents need adult literacy and/or English-language instruction,” White said. “I am pleased to provide funding for 108 local literacy projects that will allow adult students to achieve their utmost potential in the upcoming year. I will continue to do all I can to ensure that every citizen of this state has access to quality literacy programs.”

Over 10,000 students are projected to be served

by adult literacy programs around the state. A proposed total of 5,600 volunteer tutors will provide training for students to obtain skills that put them on the path to lifelong learning. Adult Literacy Grant projects help Illinois adults who read below the ninth-grade level or speak English at a beginning level to improve their reading, writing, math or use of English as a second language.

The Adult Literacy Program is administered by the Secretary of State’s Illinois State Library Literacy Office and awards grants in three categories: l Adult Volunteer Literacy provides training for volunteers who tutor adults 17 years of age and older in

basic reading, math, writing or language skills. Participating literacy providers may include libraries, volunteer tutoring organizations, community-based organizations, community colleges, regional offices of educations, schools (individual and public), preschool programs, school districts, domestic violence shelters and correctional facilities. l Penny Severns Family Literacy provides educational services to parents and children to enhance basic reading, math, writing or language skills. Programs must partner with an adult literacy provider, child-atrisk agency and a public library. l Workplace Skills En-

hancement provides onsite instructional services to employees of participating Illinois businesses, enabling them to enhance their basic reading, writing or language skills and improve their chances for promotion. Eligible employees must read at or below the ninth-grade level. Grantees must match the grant award and may also provide instructional services to prospective employees. The fiscal agent and submitting agency may be either the educational partner or the business partner.

Pappas: 36,000 properties are part of Cook County’s first Tax Sale in more than two years, and 19,000 owe less than $1,000 Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas will conduct the first sale in more than two years of delinquent Cook County property taxes on Nov. 5, 2021.

AKArama Foundation Donates Supplies The AKARAMA Foundation’s Women’s Health and Wellness Committee celebrated the start of school by presenting a bounty of school supplies to Dulles School of Excellence and John Fiske Elementary School students in the Woodlawn community. The Foundation – the charitable arm of Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated –- transported boxes and bags to the schools. The Foundation acknowledged Alderman Jeanette Beatrice Taylor of the Twentieth Ward, where both schools are located. She responded to the call by generously donating 23 boxes of supplies.

Among the much-needed items donated by members of the Foundation were notebook paper, pens, pencils, crayons, kid-friendly scissors, clue sticks, highlighters and much more.

In the event the schools need additional supplies throughout the year, the Foundation presented each school with a $2500 e-Learning Grant. Accepting the supplies and the $2500 were Dulles School of Excellence Principal Toyia Pullum and Principal Kenya Underwood, Principal of John Fiske Elementary School.

Veletta Bell, President of the Foundation, shared the feeling of relief the Foundation is experiencing as a new school year

begins. “We are heartened that schools are reopening and inschool learning will resume after the pandemic forced schools to close for 18 months,” said Bell. “As students return to the classroom, the AKARAMA Foundation anticipated that there would be needs of our neighboring schools, Fiske and Dulles.

We reached out to the principals who indicated that supplies and monetary contributions were their top priority. So we issued a call to members to donate items. The response was so overwhelming, we had to make multiple trips to deliver the supplies.”

Bell declared that the school supplies giveaway is another compelling example of how the Foundation serves the community. She also credited the Women’s Health and Wellness Committee and Dr. Causandra McClain-Hall, Chairman, for coordinating “this most-successful event.”

Kimberley Egonmwan, Vice President of the Foundation and Program Chairman, echoed Bell’s sentiments. “Service is Alpha Kappa Alpha’s credo and is the foundation upon which we were founded in 1908. Jesse White Warns Consumers to Beware of Flood-Damaged Cars White says titles for potential flood vehicles will be closely scrutinized in an extra effort to protect consumers Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White is warning consumers interested in purchasing used vehicles to beware of flood-damaged cars resulting from flooding caused by Hurricane Ida or other natural disasters.

“We are taking steps to ensure that flood-damaged vehicles from hurricanes do not receive clean titles in Illinois,” White said. “While my office will do everything it can to protect Illinoisans, it is always important that consumers also take active steps to protect themselves from purchasing damaged vehicles.”

In an effort to protect Illinois consumers, White has instructed his office to closely monitor title applications

involving potential flood vehicles. This includes ensuring vehicles coming from counties impacted by flooding are properly identified and labeled as flood vehicles when applicable.

White urged consumers to gather as much information as possible about a vehicle before making a purchase. Consumers are encouraged to obtain a National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVITIS) vehicle history report by visiting https://vehiclehistory.bja.ojp.gov/.

About $163.4 million in unpaid 2018 property taxes (that were to be paid in 2019) is due on 36,000 homes, businesses and land. Less than $1,000 is owed on 11,744 properties in Chicago and 7,700 properties in suburban Cook County.

Pappas is sending owners of those properties a certified mailing informing them that their unpaid taxes are scheduled to be sold, which would put a lien against their properties. It is the first step in a process that can end with the loss of a property.

Owners can avoid the Tax Sale by paying the delinquent taxes and interest before the sale begins. To see if your taxes are delinquent – and to make a payment – visit cookcountytreasurer.com and select “Avoid the Tax Sale.” You can search by address or by Property Index Number (PIN).

“About 75% of the taxes offered for sale are for properties in majority Black and Latino communities,” Pappas said. “That’s why Black and Latino Houses Matter, my program to help homeowners find refunds and apply for tax exemptions, is so important.”

Owners may be unaware the taxes on their properties are headed to the Tax Sale because the U.S. Postal Service has returned bills and subsequent notices on 17,702 properties.

Also, as many as 207 seniors may be missing a senior exemption and 184 seniors may be eligible for a senior freeze – two exemptions that could reduce their tax bill.

Per Illinois law, the annual Tax Sale traditionally is conducted 13 months after the due date but was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Pappas plans to conduct the sale for 2019 unpaid taxes in May and for the 2020 taxes in November 2022.

Senator Elgie Sims Sponsors Senate Bill 2177, Gives Youth in DCFS Custody To Receive Proper Baggage When Transferring Through The System Children in custody under the care of the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) will now receive appropriate baggage under a new law sponsored by Senator Elgie Sims (D-Chicago).

“This measure simply removes one of the challenges these children face within the DCFS system which may seem small but is really about not being cruel,” said Sims. “It’s not fair for some of these children to have to choose between toys and other keepsakes when moving because they simply do not have enough storage space for their belongings.”

Under current law there are no restrictions or requirements for what kind of baggage can be used in the relocation processes of youth. In some cases, children were found storing or carrying their belongings in garbage bags while moving around within the child welfare system. Senate Bill 2177 seeks to ban giving children in custody plastic bags, trash bags, pillow cases and similar containers to store their personal belongings.

The initiative, led by the National Association of Social Workers Illinois Chapter, will become effective immediately.

MUHAMMAD ALI

WTTW to produce local content and events for Muhammad Ali, a new PBS Ken Burns film beginning Sunday, September 19 at 7:00 pm on WTTW CHICAGO – August 18, 2021 – WTTW and its sister classical music radio station WFMT will produce and present special local content in connection with the upcoming four-part documentary series from Ken Burns, MUHAMMAD ALI, beginning on Sunday, September 19 at 7:00 pm on all WTTW platforms – WTTW, the PBS video app, and online at wttw.com/watch.

Parts two, three, and four of the series will air on successive nights at 8:00 pm.

MUHAMMAD ALI was directed by Ken Burns and written and co-directed by Sarah Burns and David McMahon. The film follows the life of one of the most consequential men of the 20th century, a three-time heavyweight boxing champion who captivated billions of fans with his combination of speed, agility, and power in the ring, and his charm, wit, and outspokenness outside of it. At the height of his fame, Ali challenged Americans’ racial prejudices, religious biases, and notions about what roles celebrities and athletes play in our society, and inspired people all over the world with his message of pride and self-affirmation.

Ali was a Chicago South Side resident from roughly the mid-1960s through the late 1970s, a defining period in his life. Having converted to

Islam in 1964, he claimed conscientious objector status in refusing to serve in Vietnam. Ali was immediately stripped of his title, banned from boxing, and convicted of draft evasion, a felony for which he could have served five years in prison. While his case was on appeal, Ali made the city of Chicago his home, and became more involved with the Nation of Islam and the civil rights movement, married, started a family, and eventually staged a comeback. WTTW will explore these watershed moments in Ali’s life with a companion website (wttw.com/ali) that will include an image gallery in partnership with the Chicago History Museum; an episode guide; a Q&A with Sarah Burns and David McMahon; a photo essay by Chicago architecture expert Lee Bey tracing Ali’s footsteps in Chicago; an interview with Ali’s biographer Jonathan Eig, a native Chicagoan who outlines ways that the city shaped Ali before and during his time here; and the storied history of boxing in Chicago, focusing not just on world-famous champions but aspiring amateur boxers finding discipline and purpose in the Golden Gloves tournament. WFMT will publish an interview on September 21 with Jahlil Beats, composer of the score for MUHAMMAD ALI, on wfmt.com and will also host a virtual Classical Conversation on September 9 featuring composer D.J. Sparr and librettist/ lead Solomon Howard for the opera Approaching Ali, a one-act chamber opera with music by Sparr and libretto by Mark Campbell and Davis Miller, based on Miller’s memoir The Tao of Muhammad Ali and his story “My Dinner with Ali.” The discussion will focus on the creation of the work and the challenges in portraying one of the most popular people in the world. 5 tips for effective job hunting in 2021

(BPT) - Whether you’re actively looking for a job or are simply curious about a new career, you’re not alone. Millions of people nationwide are open to work, but it can be hard to know the most effective methods for finding the right job for you.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, almost half of all American job seekers are currently looking to transition careers, according to a new Morning Consult job-seeker insight survey commissioned by Amazon. Many of those job seekers (43%) identified better pay and benefits as the top reason they are looking for new work.

“Whether you’ve been out of the job market for a while or have been working and want a change, this is a fantastic time to be looking for a new opportunity,” says Luli Chaluleu, hiring expert at Amazon. “Many companies are hiring, and with the right search tactics you’ll find a job that you not only love, but has ample benefits.”

Amazon is included in that list of companies eager to hire. Despite the pandemic, in 2020 they hired over 400,000 employees in the U.S., of which, more than 60% are now paid more than they were paid at their previous job. Competitive benefits include health insurance, up to 20 weeks of parental leave and company-funded career advancement opportunities.

“Amazon gave me a chance to branch into the IT field with no prior tech experience. The company really values us as employees, and it shows, from the pay to the benefits to the ability to learn and move into new careers - within Amazon or beyond,” said Erica Bozeman, data center technician at Amazon.

Apply even if you’re not 100% qualified: If you see a job post of interest, but hesitate to apply because you don’t have all the qualifications, think again. Hiring managers know that oftentimes candidates may lack experience in a few areas. If you have the majority of the skills listed and a willingness to learn the ones you don’t, apply anyway and then convey your enthusiasm about the opportunity during the interview.

NEWS National Museum of African American History and Culture Celebrates Fifth Anniversary Black PR Wire - In September, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture will celebrate five years as the nation’s largest cultural destination dedicated to exploring the African American story and its impact on history. After operating virtually for 10 years, the museum opened on the National Mall Sept. 24, 2016.

The museum will honor its fifth anniversary, themed “Living History,” with a season of new offerings, including the Smithsonian Anthology of Hip-Hop and Rap CD and book and an art exhibition exploring the Black Lives Matter movement, violence against African Americans and how art depicts Black resilience. Also this fall, the museum will open an exhibition exploring the Reconstruction era; a virtual museum initiative, called Searchable Museum; and offer online and in-person programming to engage people around the world in African American history and culture.

over the past five years to share African American history and culture with the world,” said Kevin Young, the Andrew W. You Have To Go To Know: LeVar Burton on Why the Rare Blood Cancer Community Needs to Get Back to the Doctor (BPT) - Best known for his roles in Roots and Star Trek: The Next Generation and helming Reading Rainbow, actor, director and longtime health advocate LeVar Burton strongly believes in using his voice and passion for storytelling to help others.

Recently, Burton, who has spent much of his career bringing stories to life, has taken on a new role. He has teamed up with Incyte on a timely health initiative called You Have to Go to Know, which aims to elevate the voices and stories of people living with and impacted by myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), a group of rare, chronic blood cancers. Burton hopes to encourage the MPN community to put their health first by seeking the care they need.

"When I learned people have been hesitant to visit their healthcare providers during the past year and a half, I felt compelled to use my voice. In particular, I learned that people with rare blood cancers called myeloproliferative neoplasms or MPNs, may have been particularly impacted and could benefit from re-prioritizing their health and visiting their healthcare providers," said Burton.

The three most common MPNs are polycythemia vera (PV), myelofibrosis (MF) and essential thrombocythemia (ET), which combined affect about 200,000 people in the U.S..[i],[ii] MPNs can affect people at any age but are more common in older adults.[i] They are progressive diseases, meaning they can change or worsen over time, and the best way to manage an MPN is through regular visits with a healthcare provider to monitor the disease to identify any changes.

Over the past year, however, many people have avoided visits to their healthcare providers due to health-related anxieties. In fact, nearly 41% of U.S. adults surveyed in 2020 indicated they didn't feel comfortable

visiting their healthcare provider in the months following the onset of the pandemic. [iii] Delaying or avoiding medical care can lead to serious health implications, especially for people with chronic conditions like cancer.

While I am not personally impacted by an MPN, I am reminded of my mother and her growing health challenges as she got older. She sometimes skipped her required doctors' visits and follow up appointments, and I saw first-hand the negative impact it had on her health. My hope is that this campaign encourages the MPN community, and others with chronic conditions, to once again seek the care they need," said Burton.

Burton is sharing what he has learned from his conversations with patients with MPNs to help inspire people within the MPN community and others with chronic conditions to once again seek the care they need: * Schedule an appointment with your healthcare team - and keep it! Make and keep regular care appointments. Advocating for your own care can help you actively participate in decisions being made about your health. More than 3 million homeowners are saving money by refinancing: 3 things to consider

(BPT) - Despite mortgage rates hitting historic lows during the last year, many homeowners still haven't considered refinancing their mortgage - essentially, replacing an existing mortgage with a new mortgage loan that has new terms and potentially a lower interest rate. Homeowners in lower-income brackets may be convinced they won't qualify for refinancing because of high debt compared to income, poor credit scores or lack of savings to cover closing costs.

However, new refinancing options are available to help make monthly housing payments more affordable. Fannie Mae - which helps make the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage and affordable rental housing possible for millions of people in America recently released RefiNow, an option that makes it easier for lenders to help eligible homeowners earning at or below 80% of the area median income refinance at a lower interest rate and reduce their monthly mortgage payment.

"Lower-income borrowers typically refinance at a slower pace than high-income borrowers," said Katrina Jones, vice president of Racial Equity, Strategy & Impact at Fannie Mae. "Especially for those who have a high- or adjustable-interest rate loan, refinancing may help make housing costs more affordable and sustainable by lowering their mortgage payments, reducing the total amount of interest paid over the life of the loan or providing more stable monthly mortgage payments."

The new RefiNow option requires that eligible homeowners achieve a savings of at least $50 in their monthly mortgage payment, but they can potentially save up to $100-$250 per month, according to the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

"We can put money-saving refinance options in reach for more homeowners by removing some perceived barriers - such as appraisal costs - to improve affordability and promote sustainable homeownership," said Jones.

Jones provided three reasons to consider refinancing now: * Interest rates are low - Mortgage rates remain low, despite moderate increases.

According to Fannie Mae research, experts expect the 30-year fixed mortgage rate to average 3% through 2021, before beginning to rise in 2022. The takeaway for homeowners: There's still time to consider refinancing. * Lower your monthly mortgage payments - Refinancing at a lower interest rate may help decrease monthly mortgage payments, which could increase monthly savings.

Refinancing may also help reduce the total amount of interest paid over the life of the loan, depending on the terms of the new loan and the existing loan. * Getting started is a phone call away - Homeowners should contact several mortgage lenders to discuss refinance options to find the best option and terms for their situation, and should always compare offers and shop around.
