HIGHER EDUCATION GROUP NAMED FINALIST IN SUSTAINABILITY AWARDS PROGRAM The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) announced recently that a group of three community colleges and three universities in the Will County region, including the University of St. Francis (USF), Governors State University, Joliet Junior College, Lewis University, Moraine Valley Community College, Prairie State College, has been named a finalist for the 2019 AASHE Sustainability Awards for the group’s Growing Sustainable Communities Together Through Leadership in Higher Education project.

Winners will be announced in mid-September and recognized during the opening ceremony at the AASHE Conference & Expo in Spokane, Wash. on Oct. 27. Finalists’ entries will be judged on overall impact, innovation, stakeholder involvement, clarity and other criteria specific to each category.

“To be named a finalist for the AASHE award is a tremendous honor. It highlights the work of the South Metropolitan Regional Higher Education Consortium’s Sustainability Committee, leading the way to work together with our communities to be equipped to solve sustainability challenges now and for the future,” said Janine Hicks, sustainability coordinator at USF. AMERICANS PUT THEIR CARS FIRST: TWO-THIRDS SERVICE THEIR VEHICLE MORE OFTEN THAN THEY GO TO THE DENTIST While the temperatures may be starting to cool down, things are just starting to heat up between Americans and their cars as the majority admit to having strong feelings of love toward their personal vehicles, according to a new Cars.com (NYSE: CARS) national survey. The survey uncovered that nearly three-quarters of Americans (73 percent) love their car a lot, and more than two-thirds (69 percent) have a significant amount of pride in their vehicle.

But just how deep does Americans’ love for their cars run?

The majority of respondents are more concerned with maintaining the health of their vehicle than their own oral health — nearly two-thirds of respondents (63 percent) confess they service their vehicle more often than they go to the dentist.

Americans’ preventive health care comes second, too, as more than half of respondents (57 percent) say they service their vehicle more than they see a doctor.

In August of 1963, during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his iconic I Have a Dream speech at the Lincoln Memorial where he called for an end to racism in the United States.

Fifty-six years later, the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, along with several other sponsors, community activists, and elected officials, hosted the Let’s Fulfill the Dream Together rally in downtown Chicago.

The purpose of the Let’s Fulfill the Dream Together rally was not only to commemorate the anniversary of Dr. King’s speech but to once again call for action in Chicago and across the country to bring an end to the senseless violence, racism, discrimination, and segregation that still exists.

“The rights and lives of people of color, immigrants, religious minorities and the LGBTQIA community are under unrelenting attack,” said Rev. Jesse L.

Jackson, Sr., founder and president of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. “We must fight back and defeat this counter-revolution. We’re inviting everyone to join the effort to change the right-wing narrative and actions coming from the White House, hate groups, and racists to protect and defend the rights and safety of vulnerable members of our community and those across the country.”

A variety of speakers participated in the event including Congressman Bobby Rush who was once a founding member of the Illinois Black Panther Party, according to History Makers. During his speech, Congressman Rush shared that he was just 16 years old when Dr. King gave his I Have a Dream speech.

As Organizations Raise Awareness About Prostate Cancer, Experts Say Early Detection Is Key Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer for men, both in the United States and worldwide. In 2019, nearly 175,000 US men will be told they have prostate cancer – that is one new case every 3 minutes. Globally, the number increases to one new case every 41 seconds.

Early detection is key to living prostate cancer free which is why the American Urological Association (AUA) and Urology Care Foundation are raising awareness about the disease by encouraging men to know their risk and talk to their doctor. Just before Prostate Cancer Awareness month, recognized in September, M. Nagler, MD, president of the Urology Care Foundation said, “Next to skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men.” He continued, “It is important for men to understand their risk of developing prostate cancer and to talk to their doctor about whether prostate cancer screening is right for them. Empowering men with the educational tools and resources of the Urology Care Foundation helps men make informed decisions about prostate cancer screening, care and treatment,” he said.

“Today, in this present moment, as I look and see what has happened, I wonder how racism is still so apparent in this nation,” said Rush. “The only thing that I can rationalize in my mind is that there is a difference between a dream and a vision. Anyone can have a dream and dreams come and go, but visions stay with you and you can’t forget your vision. A vision has the power to take hold of you. Once you realize your vision, you can not be still, sit still, or stand still until you see your vision coming to reality. We remember Dr. King’s dream but we can’t forget Dr. King’s vision for America.”

Martinez law provides flexibility for awarding State Seal of Biliteracy Assistant Majority Leader Iris Y. Martinez (D-Chicago) is making it easier for graduating high schoolers to receive the State Seal of Biliteracy.

Her new law requires the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) to accept other testing methods for students to demonstrate English language proficiency for eligibility for the seal.

“Learning to read, write and speak in two different languages is an impressive skill for anyone, particularly young people,” Martinez said.

“This law gives ISBE more flexibility to recognize that achievement.”

The State Seal of Biliteracy is a recognition given to graduating high school students who have demonstrated a high level of proficiency in English and in reading, writing, listening and speaking in another language.

House Bill 3237 is effective immediately.

Chicago South Side Film Festival Gives Local Filmmakers A Platform To Screen Their Work

The Third Annual Chicago South Side Film Festival will soon take place from Sept. 29 to Oct. 6. at various locations on the south side of Chicago. The festival will showcase several films from south side film-makers and provide them with a local platform to share their work with the community.

The Chicago South Side Film Festival is a nonprofit arts organization, founded

by Michelle Kennedy, with the mission of expanding and improving the quality of entertainment options on Chicago’s south side along with providing South Side filmmakers with opportunities to screen their work, according to information provided by the Chicago South Side Film Festival.

“Back in 2017, when I decided to found the organization, I realized that filmmakers and audiences on the south side were not getting the level of respect and variety that they really deserved,” said Kennedy. “We have a two-part mission, the first part of our mission is to improve the quality and quantity of film entertainment on the south side and the second part is to provide opportunities for south side filmmakers to screen their films. Those two things inform everything that we do.”

The Chicago South Side Film Festival will begin on Sept. 27th with a film by Jesse Saunders that celebrates 35 years of House Music, a genre that is known to have originated in Chicago, according to Britannica. The film, House Music: The Real Story is a documentary that tells the story of some of the original House Music artists.

The Chicago South Side Film Festival is partnering with the Script to Silver Screen Cinema Production Alliance to host the first Script Pitch Competition on Sept. 28. This event will allow indie filmmakers to network with industry professionals who they can pitch their

films to and receive feedback.

On Oct. 5, the film festival will host Women Behind The Lens and screen a series of short films that were all created by women. On Oct. 6, there will be a South Side Specific screening of short films created by south siders.

“The south side is very diverse and aside from mainstream studio narrative films, there’s really no place to go and see something that’s off the beaten path or more creative or something that was the product of someone born and raised on the south side. We decided to just take a chance and create something new and

here we are,” said Kennedy.

Another highlight of this film festival is the 35th Anniversary Screening of Beat Street which will take place on Oct. 4th.

“We find that a lot of audiences appreciate being able to go back into the theatre and have a big-screen experience for a movie that is 20, 30, 35, and 40 years,” said Kennedy. “There is some value to seeing it on the big screen.”

Federal Court Upholds Assault Weapons Ban In Cook County The Seventh U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals recently announced its decision in the case Wilson v. Cook County, et al.handing the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office (CCSAO) a big win in their ongoing fight to protect residents from gun violence.

The Illinois State Rifle Association backed a challenge to a

long-standing Cook County ordinance banning the possession, use, or sale of assault weapons and large capacity magazines, claiming the regulation violated the Second Amendment. The CCSAO’s Civil Actions Bureau beat back the challenge, arguing that the ordinance furthered a substantial government interest in protecting Cook County

residents from the threat of mass casualty posed by semi-automatic assault weapons and related accessories.

After learning of the court’s decision, Cook County State’s Attorney Kimberly Foxx reaffirmed her commitment to public safety in Cook County.

“Assault weapons and large capacity magazines are designed

to kill in mass and have no business on our streets,” said State’s Attorney Kimberly Foxx.

“Public safety is our top priority, and we were proud to defeat the gun lobby’s challenge in court.

While we are pleased with today’s decision, we anticipate that this will be appealed to the Supreme Court. If it is, we will be ready.”

Unique Program Aimed At Reducing Teacher Shortages Lets Students Realize Their Dreams Roosevelt University and the Chicago Public Schools have launched a unique residency program aimed at reducing teacher shortages in the high-need areas of Early Childhood and Special Education.

Made possible with a $250,000 grant from the state of Illinois, the new initiative called the AA to BA Teacher Residency Program will make it possible for the first time ever for CPS teaching assistants and paraprofessionals with associate degrees to obtain bachelor’s degrees and become licensed teachers in two years’ time.

The first class of 22 students – the majority who are Special Education majors – started July 9 at Roosevelt’s Chicago Campus.

“This is my chance to follow my dream,” said Sandra Lopez, a member of the inaugural class who has an associate’s degree and has been an academic tutor with CPS for the last six years.

Like many of her fellow classmates, the new Roosevelt student always wanted to be a teacher, but could not find the time or opportunity to complete a bachelor’s degree and obtain her teaching license.

“Now that my daughter will be off to college, it will be my turn,” said Lopez, an Early Childhood Education major who will begin teaching in a CPS classroom under supervision of a mentor next year.

The Roosevelt program is part of the larger CPS Teacher Residency: A Bridge to Teaching Program, which inducted its first group of 25 residents on Aug. 29 – all who hold bachelor’s degrees and are completing master’s degrees.

Designed in partnership by CPS and Roosevelt’s College of Education, the new AA to BA program will prepare a growing number of candidates – all who hold associate’s degrees and are completing bachelor’s degrees – for Early Childhood and Special Education teaching positions, which are fast growing at CPS and other schools throughout Illinois.

“We are creating a needed pool of qualified teachers, especially for schools with limited resources where teacher shortages have been growing,” said Tom Philion, dean of Roosevelt’s College of Education.

Since 2016, the college has been reshaping its traditional teacher preparation programs into job-embedded residency training experiences.

“We have been creating courses and programs that are more flexible, reasonable and practical than ever before. This includes our new residency program with CPS,” added Philion.

Since course and program upgrades began three years ago, enrollment at Roosevelt’s College of Education has been on the rise, with enrollment increasing 18 percent over the last three years.

Enrollment in teacher preparation programs at Roosevelt also has increased 45 percent over the same time period and 69 percent in the last two years.

In the process, the college also has forged working partnerships with a number of Chicago-area schools, including the new AA to BA Teacher Residency Program with CPS. “This new program stresses flexibility, which most of today’s busy teaching candidates really need,” he said. “We also believe it can be a model for the kind of innovative approaches that today’s financially strapped schools will want to consider if they are to continue to provide adequate resources and quality education for all.”

Legislation Creates Worker Protection Unit in Attorney General’s Office Governor JB Pritzker recently signed legislation creating a Worker Protection Unit within the Office of the Attorney General which will protect Illinois workers from wage theft and other unlawful employment practices.

“When Illinoisans put in a hard day’s work, they deserve to be compensated fairly and treated with dignity, and this new Worker Protection Unit will make sure of it,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “Attorney General Raoul and Leader Hoffman have led the charge to protect workers’ rights, and I’m proud to sign this legislation that ensures the state of Illinois expeditiously prosecutes employers violating state labor laws. Our hardworking residents deserve nothing less.”

The new unit law gives the Attorney General’s office the express authority to investigate and file suit against violators of the Prevailing Wage Act, the Employee Classification Act, the Minimum Wage Kwame Raoul Law, the Day and Temporary Labor Services Act and the Wage Payment and Collection Act. The new Worker Protection Unit will work collaboratively with the Illinois Department of Labor to detect unlawful conduct but may also take direct legal action against widespread and pervasive wage payment violations and unfair labor practices.

It also creates the Worker Protection Unit Task Force within the Office of the Illinois Attorney General to facilitate information sharing and collaboration between local and state prosecutors and regulators as well as promote a statewide outreach and enforcement effort targeting businesses that violate the state’s worker

protection laws. The task force will report on its work to the governor and General Assembly by December 1, 2020. Senate Bill 161 takes effect on January 1, 2020.

“Illinois’ diverse workforce is one of our most valuable assets, and I have long been committed to fighting unlawful employment practices, such as businesses stealing wages from and misclassifying their employees to undercut legal protections for workers. These practices harm workers, law-abiding businesses, and the Illinois economy,” said Attorney General Kwame Raoul.

“I appreciate Governor Pritzker signing this legislation to establish the Worker Protection Unit within the Attorney General’s office, and I would also like to thank Representative Hoffman and Senator Curran for partnering with my office to pass Senate Bill 161, which gives my office additional authority to protect the rights of hardworking Illinoisans.”

“Good, high-wage jobs are the backbone of a stable community. Businesses that step on their workers’ rights to widen their margins only weaken Illinois,” said House Assistant Majority Leader Jay Hoffman (D-Belleville). “I applaud the governor for signing this legislation into law, reaffirming that Illinois workers deserve fair pay, safe working conditions and freedom from workplace discrimination.”

In 2018, Gov. Rauner vetoed substantially similar legislation – SB 193 in the 100th General Assembly – sponsored by then-Sen. Kwame Raoul and Rep. Jay Hoffman.

Brown Honored Among Most Influential Women in Corporate America Danielle Brown, vice president and chief information officer for Brunswick Corporation (NYSE: BC), was recently honored among the “Most Influential Women in Corporate America” as chosen by Savoy Magazine.

Savoy Magazine, which announced its 2019 designees in its recent Summer issue, states that this group comprises the “definitive listing of African American Women achievers impacting corporate America.” The full list can be viewed online at SavoyNetwork.com.

Brown, who reports to Brunswick Chief Executive Officer David Foulkes, joined Brunswick in 2016.

She is charged with managing a world-class information technology function that creates value through the use of technology, while managing investment and focusing resources to improve operating efficiency and the organization’s ability to utilize analytics to provide a base for further innovation as well as to strengthen Brunswick’s connection to customers.

She has been in the information technology industry for over 20 years, focusing on the design and delivery of cross-functional transformational programs and technology initiatives that directly impact financial and operational performance. Brown recently was a finalist for the prestigious Chicago CIO of the Year Award for 2019 as well as included in Crain’s Chicago Business’ Tech 50 list for 2019.

Brown spent much of her career with DuPont. In her 16 years there, she held a series of

information technology roles of increasing responsibility, including Asia Pacific Applications Delivery, where she lived in Singapore with her family for three years; Global Chief Information Officer for Crop Protection, a $3.2-billion DuPont Strategic Business Unit; and IT Transformational Productivity Leader, where her leadership helped to significantly reduce costs through the deployment of new, aggressive breakthrough technology.

She has a bachelor of arts in computer science from Indiana University of Pennsylvania as well as earning a master of science in information systems, and an MBA from Pennsylvania State University and Drexel University, respectively.

Oprah Winfrey to Serve as Keynote Speaker at the 17th Annual UNCF Maya Angelou Women Who Lead Luncheon UNCF (United Negro College Fund) recently announced that global media leader, producer, actress and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey will headline the 17th annual Maya Angelou Women Who Lead Luncheon as keynote speaker on Saturday, Sept. 28. This signature fundraising event presented

In 1989, she established the Oprah Winfrey Endowed Scholarship Fund at UNCF-member institution and HBCU Morehouse College, where

her total gift stands at $12 million. She’s also given substantial donations to Spelman College and her alma mater Tennessee State University.

Additionally, Winfrey is a founding donor of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. In 2013, Winfrey was awarded the Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. In 2018, she was honored with the Cecil B deMille Award by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

As Football Season Gets Underway UNLV Gaming Law Expert Weighs in on the Current Landscape of Legal Sports Betting September’s arrival coincides with the beginning of a major pastime in the lives of Americans: football.

‘Tis the season for fans to not only cheer for and cry over their favorite teams, but to make wagers on them, too.

The opportunity to bet on football teams has expanded dramatically in the past year, with more and more states legalizing and launching sports wagering markets. It’s the result of a U.S. Supreme Court decision in May 2018 to overturn the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), also known as the Bradley Act. Since then, several states have joined Nevada — the only state that previously operated full-scale, legal sports betting — in allowing their residents to bet on sporting events. But there’s even more to come.

Jennifer Roberts, associate director of the International Center for Gaming Regulation at UNLV, gives a snapshot of where Americans can legally place wagers, and what the future holds for an industry that’s nascent in much of the country.

Q: What does the current sports betting landscape look like?

A: There are 12 states with active, legally regulated sports betting, and several other states, along with Washington D.C., that have made sports betting legal, but haven’t yet launched their programs.

I estimate that within five to 10 years

of PASPA being struck down, sports betting will be legalized in at least 30 states. I wouldn’t be surprised to see nearly every state — perhaps with the exception of Utah — eventually adopt some version of sports wagering.

Massachusetts and Michigan are currently talking about it, and Louisiana nearly passed legislation this year. There are several states that I expect to propose legislation in upcoming legislative cycles.

Prior to the Supreme Court decision, Nevada was the only state that had fullscale, legal sports betting.

Q: What’s the reason that a state might want to jump in? What should states take into consideration before making sports betting a legal enterprise?

A: I think generating revenues is a piece of it. Employment is another aspect, and of course, fighting the illegal market. It’s better to have it open and transparent than maintain it in an illegal market.

Before states consider taking the plunge, they need to understand how sports betting works. That’s the key. Many states approach this new enterprise thinking that it’s going to solve budget woes, but that’s likely not the case.

In Rhode Island, for example, lawmakers there projected sports betting revenues of $11.5 million, but only about $150,000 came in over the first several months. In Nevada, sports wagering makes up 2.5 percent

of gaming revenues — a very small portion. That’s because, while we might have a large amount of money being wagered, operators also have to pay out winning wagers. Sports betting is all about managing risk — you don’t want to take wagers on things where you’re going to lose a lot of money. The New England Patriots’ Super Bowl victory, for example, cost Rhode Island nearly $1.2 million in payouts. In Nevada, sports books lose $10 million on Sunday NFL games, but they win quite a bit of money on college basketball. States, overall, need to have a realistic understanding and approach to sports betting.

It’s also important for states to keep in mind that fighting the illegal market is not easy. It’s always going to be a battle over convenience, pricing, and access to credit. But the advantages of a legal market outweigh those of an illegal market. In a legal market, patron funds are safe and secure, and there are greater consumer protections. In a regulated system, sports wagering is more likely to be done honestly and fairly, and you can also provide problem gambling messaging.

Q: If I want to open a sports book within a state that allows legal sports betting, what should I know?

A: Sports betting looks a little bit different in each state. Some states, for example, do not allow wagering on college games within their boundaries.

mobile platforms, and other states are not going to allow mobile betting at all. Some states operate sports betting through a lottery system, and others operate it through a casino. So, it’s really varied across the U.S. Working within the boundaries that each state sets up can be especially challenging if you’re an operator with locations in multiple jurisdictions.

In that case, you’re going to have to operate differently in each state, and pay attention to how the tax rates differ.

It’s also important for operators to communicate and share information between states. In Nevada, our legal sports books have an interest in protecting against betting corruption, and will notify our regulators if they see anything suspicious. It’s important to avoid silos so that the integrity of the market is protected everywhere.

Q: How will the sports betting market change and grow over the next few years?

A: There is likely going to be a push to include more and more nontraditional sporting events in the legal betting market. One major example of this is minor league baseball. Earlier this year, Nevada sports books began taking wagers on the Las Vegas Aviators after the Nevada Gaming Commission repealed a rule that prohibited betting on professional baseball games. Sports betting is also expanding to tennis, golf, international hockey, WNBA,

Australian rugby, cricket, cycling, and even college lacrosse.

Betting on non-sporting, international and esports events is also growing in the U.S. New Jersey, for example, offered wagering on the Academy Awards for the first time this year, and Nevada allows people to make wagers on the World Series of Poker and has approved wagering on Golden Tee tournaments. New Jersey was also approached about doing the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, but they declined to do it.

In the future, it’s also possible that the location of sports books will expand. Washington D.C. will likely allow sports betting in sports arenas and the NBA recently announced a virtual sports betting platform. It will be very interesting to see how this all plays out, especially as global markets are seeing more restrictions and compliance penalties.

Chicago History Museum Explores Muslim Culture in New Exhibition A hub of culture, Chicago has long been home to people of various religious and ethnic backgrounds. Often referred to as the American Medina, the city is and has become home to thousands of Muslims as Medina in modern day Saudi Arabia has been for centuries.

Since the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, which featured some of the first mosques in the United States, diverse Muslim communities have made Chicago their home.

Journey through the experiences of Chicago’s Muslim communities in the new exhibition, “American Medina: Stories of Muslim Chicago” opening on Monday, October 21 at the Chicago History Museum. The exhibition is the third in a series of

religious-themed projects.

“American Medina breaks new ground for the Museum. This interactive, multi-media exhibition weaves together oral history interviews of Muslim Chicagoans with a broad array of artifacts loaned to the Museum by community members from across the region,” said Peter Alter, chief historian at the Chicago History Museum and Director of the Studs Terkel Center for Oral History. “In a collaborative and community focused way, American Medina explores the lives and histories of Muslim Chicagoans, offering visitors new perspectives on the city’s and the country’s history.”

Visitors will listen to the experiences and thought-provoking personal

narratives of Chicago’s diverse Muslim communities through more than 30 audio interviews. “American Medina: Stories of Muslim Chicago” highlights three resoundingly prominent themes that arose out of the interviews: identity, journey, and faith. Oral history interviews delve into the history of some of the first Muslim communities and the stories of subsequent generations that have made Chicago home for the past 120 years. The exhibition also offers a basic introduction to the Islamic faith to non-Muslim Chicagoans.

Teen historians from city and suburban communities have participated in many aspects of the exhibition. As paid part-time employees of the Chicago History

Museum, the teen historians have collected oral histories for the project, conducted historical research, and lead the development of the exhibition’s introductory short film. Each teen historian brings their own knowledge and vast combined experiences of community work to the project.

Admission to the exhibition is included with regular Museum admission ($19 adults/ $17 seniors and students, and free for children 12 years of age and younger and Illinois residents 18 years and younger).
