WTTW TO PRODUCE LOCAL CONTENT AND EVENTS FOR ‘MUHAMMAD ALI’ WTTW and its sister classical music radio station WFMT will produce and present special local content in connection with the upcoming fourpart documentary series from Ken Burns, MUHAMMAD ALI, at 7 p.m. beginning on Sunday, Sept. 19 on all WTTW platforms. Parts two, three, and four of the series will air on successive nights at 8:00 pm.

MUHAMMAD ALI was directed by Ken Burns and written and co-directed by Sarah Burns and David McMahon. The film follows the life of one of the most consequential men of the 20th century, a threetime heavyweight boxing champion who captivated billions of fans with his combination of speed, agility, power in the ring, his charm, wit and outspokenness outside of it.

At the height of his fame, Ali challenged Americans’ racial prejudices, religious biases, and notions about what roles celebrities and athletes play in our society, and inspired people all over the world with his message of pride and self-affirmation.

Ali was a Chicago South Side resident from roughly the mid-1960s through the late 1970s, a defining period in his life. Having converted to Islam in 1964, he claimed conscientious objector status in refusing to serve in Vietnam. Ali was immediately stripped of his title, banned from boxing, and convicted of draft evasion, a felony for which he could have served five years in prison. While his case was on appeal, Ali made the city of Chicago his home, and became more involved with the Nation of Islam and the civil rights movement, married, started a family, and eventually staged a comeback.

WTTW will explore these watershed moments in Ali’s life with a companion website, wttw.com/ali.

Kiley Russell, founder and executive director of Kemit Academy, first opened the day care, with a focus on children with different needs 16 years ago. She was trying to find a space for her older son that wasn’t all play but not strict and structured all day. As a school administrator, she was working many hours each day but spending a few hours with her son.

Russell’s youngest son, was a little bit different, had unique needs. She was shuffled off by his pediatrician, something she said in talking to other Black and brown families was a pattern. Her son needed speech and occupational therapy. Russell would drive to the North side an hour and twenty minutes each way for his services.

Russell was put on waitlist to get services at hospitals closer to where she lived. She was motivated to go back to school for her certification in early childhood and special education. She made it her mission to reopen Kemit. She wanted Kemit Academy, located at 51st and www.citizennewspapergroup.com

“School is for everyone. A child shouldn’t be turned away because they have different needs, or a school can’t accommodate them. A lot of times in the early childhood setting, that’s what happens, they’re turned away. If there’s a child in a wheelchair, oftentimes, all of their education and social experiences happen inside of their home because either the parent can’t transport them or they’re working,” she said.

Russell said families might not be able to logistically get their child to a place during those early years if they have different needs.

Russell lives in Hyde Park and is a firm believer that one should be able to work and live in the same place.

The community is centrally located and easily accessible to families.

Kemit Academy has families from the southern suburbs and from the West side. She called Hyde Park Kemit’s “forever home.” She looked for an available space for a number of years before she found the space where it is now.

There are no COVID-19 restrictions on day care centers, so it is

currently open at 100% capacity.

As far as the therapeutic side of the center, it is a challenge because a lot of families were being served virtually.

“We were offering virtual services, but we know that some children absolutely need in person instructions and in-person services. We have been able to accommodate that. We initially had to pause our social skills group, activities and took them to one-on-one and now we’re welcoming families back in person for occupational therapy and speech therapy,” Russell said.

For the daycare center, Kemit is licensed for 90 children. For the therapy, it depends on the needs of the children. It varies from month to month and is based on their progress. Kemit offers free evaluations, as well as services for children who are transitioning out of day care into a school setting, assisting parents with IEP and 504 meetings.

Festival set for Sept. 11-12 in Washington Park Festival Honors Victory of Jean Baptiste Point DuSable Lake Shore Drive Name Change and Focuses on Health and Wellness The 28th African/Caribbean International Festival of Life (IFOL) in Conjunction with The 5th Annual Jerk, Seafood and Vegan Festival (JSVFest) is confirmed to bring nations together through music and culture Saturday and Sunday September 11th and 12th starting noon at Washington Park.

The smell and taste of the best jerk, seafood and vegan food will fill the park the entire weekend as vendors from all over the country will come to display their best. For five years the festival has been a festival for foodies and lovers of international cuisine. This festival will be a taste of jerk from all over the world.

The two-day, family-friendly festival will adhere to safety and security protocols, and continue with the tradition of bringing cultures together by teaching and sharing experiences through music, food, arts, crafts, and games the entire weekend.

The event also is an opportunity to honor the victory of Lake Shore Drive name change to honor Haitian immigrant and founding father Jean Baptiste Point DuSable, who settled along the shores of Lake Michigan in 1779.

There will be reserved spaces throughout the park to focus on health and wellness for the community. A ‘Moment of Medicine’ will be dedicated where someone from the medical community with background knowledge can provide the importance of vaccinations. POLITICAL Affairs Senator Collins’ plan to expunge felony prostitution convictions signed into law The legislation is effective immediately.

Felony prostitution charges, which have not existed in Illinois since 2013, will be expunged under a new law signed today, the result of legislation by State Senator Jacqueline Collins (DChicago).

“The fact we have stopped charging prostitution as a felony means nothing to those whose records continue to be hurt by these charges,” said Collins (D-Chicago). “I want to thank Gov. Pritzker for signing this legislation and moving us beyond a dynamic that only serves to harm sex workers and perpetuate a dangerous, exploitative environment for them.”

Loyola University Chicago to Host Angels Unawares Sculpture Loyola University Chicago is hosting the Angels Unawares sculpture on its Lake Shore Campus. Loyola will be the sculpture’s final stop on a year-long nationwide tour sponsored by The Catholic University of America and is only the second Jesuit university to host the piece.

Angels Unawares embodies the Catholic Church’s teachings on immigration, particularly the importance of welcoming the stranger and celebrating the many contributions of migrants and refugees to our society. It depicts more than 140 immigrants from across history densely packed onto a boat with the holy family. It is based on Hebrews 13:2: “Be welcoming to strangers, many have entertained angels unawares.” Through this national tour, people across the country will have the opportunity to share in its message of welcome and hope.

Angels Unawares is a second casting of a piece commissioned by Pope Francis and was created by Canadian artist Timothy Schmalz.

The original casting was installed in St. Peter’s Square in Rome and unveiled by Pope Francis on the 105th observance of the World Day of Migrants and Refugees on September 29, 2019. This second casting was gifted to Catholic University last year, where it was unveiled and blessed in observance of the day in 2020.

“We are honored to host the Angels Unawares sculpture on our campus this month,” said Dr. Jo Ann Rooney, president of Loyola. “Loyola was founded 150 years ago to serve the immigrant communities of Chicago, and today our international students and faculty are valued partners in our global mission.

We welcome Angels Unawares as part of our 150th Anniversary observance, and the opportunities presented to reflect on the journey and contributions of migrants and refugees.”

The piece will be commemorated with a special Mass presided by Cardinal Blase J. Cupich of the Archdiocese of Chicago at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at Loyola’s Madonna della Strada Chapel. Following the Mass, which is open to the Chicago community, the Cardinal will lead a precession to Angels Unawares.

The 3.5-ton, 20-foot sculpture will be located near the southwest corner of the West Quad on Loyola’s Lake Shore Campus and will be installed this Friday between 9 and 10 a.m. It will remain on campus until Monday, Oct. 4.

Loyola invites the entire Chicago community to visit the sculpture. Campus visitors must follow the University’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols, which can be found on Loyola’s Return to Campus website. www.citizennewspapergroup.com

While prostitution has not been prosecuted as a felony in Illinois since 2013, those with such convictions are still subject to all the penalties that come with a felony record. Included in the law is another provision that also allows defendants whose convictions may cause consequences under federal immigration law to file for a post-conviction hearing.

“Our justice system must operate on the premise that a defendant is well-informed of their rights and the consequences of their choices. There have been numerous cases in which those who plead guilty are unaware of how it may affect their immigration status, and are not well-informed by their defenders,” Collins said. “This is a step toward rectifying that.”

Senator Hunter’s bill will increase regulation in prescription monitoring program State Senator Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago), led a proposal to increase regulations for the prescription monitoring program is now law.

“Primary doctors must be aware of any prescriptions being prescribed or filled for their patients in addition to what they prescribe to ensure any unnecessary prescriptions can be eliminated,” Hunter said. “Opioid overdose rates have risen in Illinois over the last year, and I want to take all necessary precautions so that patients are not over-prescribed but get the help that they need.”

Senate Bill 1842 allows the Prescription Monitoring Program to send automatic reports to prescribers and dispensers when medication shopping is detected from five identifications of a prescriber or pharmacy in a six month period.

The Illinois Controlled Substances Act currently allows the PMP to issue an unsolicited report to the prescriber, dispenser, or designee informing them of potential medication shopping when a person is identified as having three or more prescribers, pharmacies, or both that do not utilize a common electronic file.

This law will allow an unsolicited report to be sent, and changes the limit on how many prescribers or pharmacies a person can have from three to five. It also aligns Illinois law with the current federal Department of Centers for Disease Control guidelines.

“Doctors need to know what other medications their patients may be taking so none of the medications incite a deadly interaction,” Hunter said. “The right treatment is necessary for helping someone overcome addiction, and saving their life.”

Senate Bill 1842 is effective immediately.

Preheat oven to 400° F.

Cooking:

1/2 teaspoon milk

1/2 cup blackberries 1/2 cup granola 2 tablespoons sliced almonds Cooking spray for griddle pan and sheet pan Directions:

Heat a griddle pan on medium heat. Spray the griddle with cooking spray.

Dip 4 slices of bread into the egg mixture separately then place on the griddle pan. Cook about 4 minutes each side or until golden brown. Spray the griddle again and repeat steps with last 4 slices of bread.

1) Pre-heat oven to 350°F. 2) Set aside 1 tablespoon parsley, 1 tablespoon chopped bacon and 1 tablespoon diced tomatoes for garnish.

3) In a standing mixer, combine cream cheese, white cheddar cheese, bacon, deli roast beef,

sour cream, Romano cheese, tomatoes, paprika, garlic, mustard, parsley, Worcestershire sauce, bourbon and pepper until well incorporated.

4) Remove bowl from mixer and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or until ready to bake.

5) Spread the dip into an 8" cast iron or oven-proof skillet.

6) Bake in a 350°F oven for 25 minutes or until golden brown and edges are bubbling.

7) Remove from oven and top with remaining bacon, parsley and tomatoes. Serve warm with crackers, toasted bread or celery and carrots - it's the ultimate finger food for a cold day!

Welcoming Our Students (BPT) - The classroom environment changed tremendously throughout the pandemic, with many children studying at home full- or part-time. This meant additional gear for many, such as tablets and workbooks, while some items like backpacks went unused while studying remotely. As millions of students head back to the classroom for the start of the 2021/22 school year, backpacks will be a necessity again, and experts have some advice to ensure a safer start to the school year.

"With a focus on getting back in the classroom and returning to 'normal,' it's easy to overlook possible injuries caused by everyday school supplies," said American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons spokesperson Emily Dodwell, MD, MPH, FAAOS, a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. "Backpacks might not seem that high on the list of safety hazards for children, but if too heavy or worn improperly, they can cause pain or injury to muscles and joints.

Some potential problems could include wearing the backpack on only one shoulder, or a small child carrying heavy objects like a textbook, tablet or computer."

As part of its "Prevent Injuries America™" campaign, the AAOS is spreading the word that backpacks that are too heavy or are worn incorrectly can cause numerous problems. Improperly used backpacks may injure or overuse muscles and joints. This can lead to back, neck and shoulder pain, as well as posture problems. This is especially concerning for students in hybrid learning environments because they may need to carry more items back and forth to school and home throughout the week.

Tips for selecting and using school backpacks Shopping for a backpack is a fun part of preparing to go back to school, but many kids will prioritize fashion over function.

Caregivers can help guide children to choose a backpack they like that also benefits their well-being.

AAOS recommends backpacks that are lightweight with a waist or chest strap and two shoulder straps that are wide and padded.

Rolling backpacks are a good option as well. If your child resists using a traditional two-strap backpack, a well-structured crossbody bag may be a reasonable compromise.
