NEWS briefly LOYOLA UNIVERSITY CHICAGO ANNOUNCES PRESIDENT ROONEY TO STEP DOWN AT THE END OF ACADEMIC YEAR In an email to the campus community today, Loyola University Chicago President Dr. Jo Ann Rooney announced her plans to step down as President at the end of the 2021-2022 academic year.

In an email to students, faculty, and staff, Dr. Rooney wrote: “After five thrilling, demanding, and inspiring years leading our remarkable and resilient institution and over fourteen years as a university president, I am announcing that this will be my last year as President of Loyola University Chicago. While this may come as a surprise to some of you, it is the result of deep reflection on my part, some personal issues that warrant more of my attention, and a desire to ensure continuity of leadership once the implementation of our multi-year strategic plan and 8+ year comprehensive fundraising campaign begins.”

Dr. Rooney made history at Loyola University as the first female and lay President. Among her many accomplishments at Loyola include: The creation of a multi-year strategic plan; Welcoming the most diverse and largest freshmen classes in the university’s history this fall; Diversifying the ranks of the faculty; and Boosting the university’s endowment and strengthening its financial position.

Dr. Rooney is helping to lead Loyola into a new and challenging era where issues like diversity, academic rigor, and financial security are emerging with added urgency.

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to thank Dr. Rooney for her leadership during her five years here,” said Susan Sher, JD ‘74, Chairman of Loyola’s Board of Trustees. “I’m particularly proud of her accomplishments as our first female and first lay president. Her work on behalf of Loyola has strengthened our institution and positioned us well for the future.”

Dr. Rooney announced her intent to leave at the end of the academic year while offering to remain on in an advisory capacity to ensure a successful transition.

The Board of Trustees will meet in September to discuss the next steps for a search process for a new president.

SLAUGHTER-BACKED LEGISLATION ALLOWS ELECTRONIC WILLS To allow technology a bigger role in estate planning and address public health concerns during the ongoing pandemic, state Rep. Justin Slaughter, D-Chicago, recently supported legislation that will legalize electronic wills that were signed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Due to this virus, thousands across our country had to endure their final days in isolation unable to hold or be near their loved ones,” said Slaughter. “In the face of these unprecedented challenges, our government has had to make changes to the law to allow families to go ahead with estate planning during the pandemic.”

Senate Bill 730, which was recently signed into law

by Gov. J.B. Pritzker, authorizes the use of remote witnesses, testators, signing and notarization in the will process. Remote witnesses and notaries cannot sign for the testator, but testators may provide or authorize another entity to electronically sign the will. This legislation seeks to address concerns about the spread of COVID-19 between the dying and witnesses and notaries.

“Although we have made immense progress in the past few months with vaccinations and fighting this virus, it’s still not over,” said Slaughter. “However, I know that if we each continue to do our parts by vaccinating, masking up and social distancing that we can and will make out of this mess together.”

The Chicago Tennis Festival is in full swing with events that range from a college tennis recruiting combine to the Women’s Tennis Association tournaments.

Kamau Murray, CEO and founder of XS Tennis and the Education Foundation, served as the host. XS Tennis, located at 5336 S. State St., is the site of the Chicago Tennis Festival. Tennis Legend Zina Garrison serves as the tournament’s director.

The Chicago Tennis Festival is the first professional tournament to be promoted and directed by African-Americans.

Murray understands the significance of the festival having a Black host and a Black director. When given the contribution of Black people to tennis and the rich historical relationship Black people have with the sport, noting tennis players like Venus and Serena Williams and Arthur Ashe.

“I think bringing an event like this to XSTEF shows the kids, who are served by our non-profit organization exactly how much they’re capable of,” he said. “They’ll also be given a direct line to see and interact with tennis greats firsthand when the festival kicks into gear.”

Murray also mentioned that the festival

will help bridge the gap for players from communities of color who are often left out of tennis due to cost and lack of neighborhood facilities.

On Saturday, Aug. 14, 23 players participated in the college tennis recruiting combine, with coaches from Historically Black Colleges and Universities and small colleges. Several of those players were offered scholarships. Murray enjoyed seeing the players and coaches interact throughout the day and said it seemed as though they made meaningful relationships. After seeing the scholarships offers from the combine, Murray believes it was one of the most important dates of the festival.

The pro-level tournaments during the Chicago Tennis Festival impact participating players’ career, making the festival not just an exposition event. Murray was able to get players to participate because they saw the value of his vision of the festival. WTA Chicago 125 took place Monday-Sunday, Aug. 16-22; WTA Chicago Women’s Open took place from Sunday-Saturday, Aug. 22-28; and Chicago Fall Tennis Classic will take place on Monday-Sunday, Sept. 27-Oct.3.

“I think deep down most people are more drawn to doing things that make a tangible difference, rather than flocking to

big name event after big name event. I think my offer for them to do the Chicago Tennis Festival really spoke to them,” he said.

Murray said Garrison shares a lot of his values, as well as the mission of XS Tennis.

Garrison’s goals and ambitions aligned closely with Murray’s, which is why he thinks they have been such a great team throughout the festival. Garrison is the founder of the Zina Garrison Foundation for the Homeless and Zina Garrison AllCourt Tennis Program, which supports inner city tennis in Houston.

Murray hopes that by hosting the Chicago Tennis Festival, more African American women will get involved in tennis and encourage the Black girls in their lives to get involved in the sport.

“Tennis is a sport that has the most opportunity for Black girls to get scholarships and to become successful athletes. I think there’s still a lot of work to be done in terms of representation in all fields and walks of life, even in tennis, where some of the biggest names are greats like Venus and Serena and Naomi Osaka,” he said.

Jesse White Expanding Driver’s License and ID Card Appointment Program to Additional Chicagoland Facilities Launching Comprehensive Plan to Address Heavy Customer Volume at Facilities Caused by COVID-19 Pandemic Expanding remote renewal program for DLs/IDs so more customers can renew online, by phone or by mail Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White is reminding the public that beginning the first week of September, customers will be required to make an appointment for behind-the-wheel road tests, REAL IDs, standard driver’s licenses and ID cards at three Chicago facilities. The facilities are Chicago North, 5401 N. Elston Ave. beginning Sept. 1; Chicago West, 5301 W. Lexington St. beginning Sept. 2; and Chicago South, 9901 S. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive beginning Sept. 3. Vehicle services, such as renewing a license plate sticker or applying for a vehicle title, do not require an appointment.

The week of Sept. 7, many other metro Driver Services facilities will also require appointments. These facilities and the dates they go live include Schaumburg and Bridgeview on Sept. 7; Lombard and Des Plaines on Sept. 8; Waukegan and Naperville on Sept. 9; and Aurora, Plano and Joliet on Sept.

Lake Zurich, Melrose Park, Midlothian and Woodstock have been serving as appointment facilities since early this year and will continue requiring appointments.

All 16 appointment-based facilities will have the same standardized days and hours of operation: Tuesday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Customers and employees are required to wear masks.

Customers are encouraged to bring their own masks.

Customers can visit www.cyberdriveillinois.com to schedule an appointment up to 10 days in advance during this phase of the program. New appointment slots will be available each day at www.cyberdriveillinois.com.

Secretary White emphasized that seniors, veterans, persons with disabilities and expectant mothers will be served as walkins at all 16 of the designated appointment facilities. They also have the option to make an appointment.

Beginning in September, customers can schedule an appointment online or by calling the appointment helpline at 844-817-4649. The Secretary of State is partnering with the Chicago Lighthouse to provide these call center services. The Chicago Lighthouse’s call centers offer career opportunities for people who are blind, visually impaired, disabled, veterans and economically disadvantaged.

White is launching a comprehensive media campaign this week, which includes television, radio, newspapers, digital display and social media ads that will run in English and Spanish in the Chicago metro area.

White noted that not all facilities will go to the appointment-based system. Many small, rural facilities will not require the appointment system because they do not encounter the heavy customer volume that large facilities encounter.

Larger central and downstate Illinois facilities will implement a customer scheduling system in the near future.

Chicagoland Walk-in Facilities Some Chicagoland facilities will remain accessible to walkin customers. These facilities include Deerfield, Elgin, Chicago Central (James R. Thompson Center) and the temporary facility at Prairie State College in Chicago Heights.

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White Expanding online renewal to address heavy customer volume Beginning in September and running through February 2022, White’s office will be expanding remote renewal for driver’s license and ID card holders. During this six-month period, the office will mail letters to eligible customers with expired driver’s licenses and ID cards, requiring them to renew online, by phone or by mail. The office estimates that this will eliminate the need for approximately 1 million people to visit a facility.

In addition, White’s office will continue mailing online renewal letters to drivers and ID card holders 90 days before their cards expire. Many customers will be able to renew online, by phone and by mail and avoid visiting facilities.

Customers who must visit a facility include first time driver’s license or ID card applicants, first time REAL ID applicants and drivers ages 75 and older who are required by state law to visit a facility when renewing their license.

White continues to encourage people to conduct other business online at www.cyberdriveillinois.com. Aside from driver’s license and ID card renewals for those who qualify, online services include obtaining a duplicate driver’s license or ID card, ordering a driver record and purchasing license plate stickers.

As a reminder, White has extended all driver’s license and ID card expiration dates to Jan. 1, 2022. This extension does not apply to commercial driver’s licenses (CDL) and CDL learner’s permits.

In addition, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the federal REAL ID deadline to May 3, 2023.

“During the pandemic, my office has continued to serve the public, including face-to-face transactions, in a safe and responsible manner,” said White. “Throughout this time, we also greatly expanded online services. This next step will allow many more people to renew their driver’s licenses or ID cards remotely instead of visiting a Driver Services facility. To further address the heavy customer volume at facilities, my office is expanding the appointment program in September to include most Chicagoland facilities, so customers who must visit a facility can schedule an appointment. This plan will deliver life-changing benefits for working families across the nation through creating new jobs, cutting taxes for families and small businesses, and lowering healthcare costs.

The budget reconciliation process first requires both the Senate and House to pass a budget resolution that includes reconciliation instructions to committees of jurisdiction. The resolution passed recently includes instructions to 13 House and 12 Senate committees to support transformative investments in the health, well-being and financial security of America’s workers and families.

National Coalition Pledges Constituent Pressure on Senators To Reject Nomination of Rahm Emanuel for Japan Ambassador A coalition of organizations is launching a campaign against the nomination of Rahm Emanuel as the U.S. ambassador to Japan.

Constituents in every state will urge their senators to vote No on the nomination, which President Biden announced late Friday.

RootsAction.org, the group coordinating the nationwide campaign, said that it expects several thousand constituents will be sending individual emails to their senators this week to kick off the grassroots drive.

In mid-May, the coalition of 20 organizations -- mostly national while including several groups based in Chicago, where Emanuel was mayor for eight years -- issued a statement in response to reports that Emanuel was in line for the diplomatic post. The organizations warned that Biden was “on the verge of making a serious error,” adding: “Emanuel’s abysmal record as mayor of Chicago disqualifies him to represent the United States in a foreign capital. Our organizations will make sure that every senator hears, loud and clear, from constituents who will insist that this unwise nomination be rejected.”

Pappas: Check your mailbox for Second Installment property tax bills Nearly 1.8 million bills are in the mail Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas has mailed out nearly 1.8 million Second Installment property tax bills. Payments are due Oct. 1.

The new bills will bring the total amount billed countywide for 2020 to more than $16.1 billion, an increase of more than 3.4 percent from last year. A recent analysis by the Treasurer’s Office found the tax increase is hitting commercial property owners and Black and Latino suburban property owners the hardest.

Affinity Empowering Enrolls 100th Organization ALEXANDRIA, Va. Take the lid off the toilet tank, turn off the water and pour a half gallon of vinegar into the flush valve (where the flapper sits) and let it sit for 30 minutes. It's going to fill the rim, clean and break down the hard water buildup to wash it out. Turn the water back on and flush it. It should flush much better.

What many people don't realize is that you don't always need to be a plumber or have special tools to fix a toilet. Tip #2: What is flushable?

Although many wipes look the same, wipes are created differently, and many are not meant to be flushed. Many people flush disposable cleaning wipes, baby wipes or other wipes that do not break down after flushing and can wreak havoc on your pipes.

Tip #3: Make sure you check before you flush Check the label before you flush and ask yourself "Is this flushable?" Cottonelle Flushable Wipes are septic safe and this is indicated on the packing.

Forensic studies by sewer agencies show at least 98% of materials collected from treatment plant screens were baby wipes, hard surface cleaning wipes, paper towels, tampons and other hygiene products labeled "Do Not Flush." Just one minute of reading can save you tons of money.

Tip #4: Replace old pipes So many issues can be traced back to outdated piping materials, which is why I always tell my clients, and potential homeowners, to learn when the piping was installed. If you live in a home that was built before or even during the '70s and '80s, I recommend inspecting and possibly replacing cast iron, steel and lead pipes. All of those materials can corrode and break over the years, causing many costly repairs in your future. Also, if you have polybutylene water lines, keep an eye on your water bill as the cost could help

indicate a potential leak.

Tip #5: Embrace the double flush In addition to being more mindful of what you're flushing down the toilet (e.g., flushing non-flushable wipes), you may need to use a "double-flush." That can mean flushing once before throwing toilet paper or flushable wipes in the bowl, and then flushing again to ensure the materials have gone down the drain. Another preventative measure is addressing a weak flush or slow

drain immediately. The situation probably won't get better by doing nothing so either check it out and clear it yourself or call your plumber.
