CODEVERSE PARTNERS WITH GIRL SCOUTS TO LAUNCH ALL-GIRLS CODING PROGRAM Codeverse is officially one step closer to their mission to “teach a billion kids to code.” The world’s first fully interactive school and educational tech platform recently announced that the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana’s out-of-school-time program, GirlSpace, has granted them a $45,000 scholarship to give Girl Scouts in low-income neighborhoods the chance to learn coding this fall at the Codeverse Lincoln Park location (819 W. Eastman St., Chicago).

GirlSpace is a year-round out-of-school-time program offered by the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana, which provides girls a safe, structured and supportive learning environment that empowers them with essential skills for success in school and life – thus, a natural pairing for Codeverse.

SURPRISE MEDICAL BILLS: CONSUMERS RARELY GET UP-FRONT ESTIMATES OF MEDICAL COSTS, ACCORDING TO EHEALTH SURVEY eHealth has released results from a survey showing that most consumers are rarely or never advised of their projected costs when receiving medical care. It also found that few consumers can afford to pay their annual deductible. The survey of consumers who purchased Affordable Care Act (ACA) coverage at eHealth was conducted on a voluntary basis in July 2019. A total of 801 responses were collected.

Highlights of the survey report that consumers do not get an up-front estimate of costs: A majority (58%) said they are “rarely” or “never” given an up-front estimate of costs before receiving medical care and most have to ask for cost estimates. Of those who received estimates, 70% had to ask their medical care provider for the estimate; 30% were offered an estimate without asking. Forty-four percent of those given an up-front cost estimate said their final costs exceeded that estimate, according to the survey.

ILLINOIS COURT APPOINTED SPECIAL ADVOCATES (ILLINOIS CASA) RECEIVES STATE FUNDING FOR THE FIRST TIME Illinois CASA has been awarded a $2,885,000.00 in State funding. This is the first time in Illinois CASA’s 26 years of operation that they have received any state funding. CASA stands for court appointed special advocate. A CASA is a trained, community volunteer who advocates for the best interests of abused and neglected children who are involved with the child welfare system. This funding will be split between thirty-one local programs across Illinois to expand their programing so more kids who have experienced child abuse or neglect can have a specially trained Court Appointed Special Advocate assigned to their case. In addition, there will be money to go into some counties to open new CASA programs to help serve the over 2,000 survivors who do not currently have access to a CASA program.

Executive Director Mari Christopherson stated, “This funding means that more children across Illinois do not have to go through the court process alone. We applaud the Governor in supporting a program that works.”

South Side Co-Working Space Provides Mentors And Workshops For Local Entrepreneurs Continued from page 1

The University of Chicago’s Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation is home to Polsky Exchange, a co-working space on Chicago’s south side. As a Polsky Exchange member, small business owners and entrepreneurs gain access to new resources, mentors, workshops, and events to help them succeed.

The Polsky Exchange is located on 53rd Street in Hyde Park and is home to co-working space, a state-of-the-art Fabrication Lab, and weekly programming and workshops that are all designed to help entrepreneurs build their ideas and technologies into startup businesses, according to information provided by the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

“The Polsky Exchange is a location, and a community, in which entrepreneurs and those that are interested in innovation or entrepreneurship and business can connect on the south side and look at growing their ideas or their businesses alongside a com-

munity of mentors,” said E. J. Reedy, senior director of the Polsky Exchange.

As part of the University of Chicago, Polsky Exchange aims to engage not only University staff and affiliates but also the community by offering several ongoing educational events and activities that are open to the public.

“We engage the broader community with resources that support entrepreneurship and innovation in many different ways,” said Reedy. “For those that are wishing to engage in a deeper way, through the use of space, through the use of mentors, and through the use of some of our conference rooms and other meeting facilities, then they could look to become a member of the Polsky Exchange.”

Membership is available to University of Chicago students, alumni, faculty, staff, researchers, and to local community members. Membership costs $150 per quarter, but is free for anyone currently affiliated with the University of Chicago, according to information provided by the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

Currently, there are about 4000 members at the Polsky Exchange and about 1000 of those are not affiliated with the University, according to Reedy.

Members are also able to apply to be part of the Polsky Incubator which provides even more in-depth and structured support for businesses through mentorship, networking, legal support, training, and dedicated office space for early-stage startups.

“Some of our members decided to become part of a cohort and to become part of a kind of a more intense program that grows entrepreneurship, that is the Polsky Incubator,” said Reedy.

The full-time entrepreneurs who are selected to participate in the Polsky Incubator, get their own desk at the Polsky Exchange and receive a deeper level of support and engagement from their mentors. They also receive support from a cohort of 10 to 20 other startup entrepreneurs who are all in the early stages of growing their businesses on the south side of Chicago.

Johnson & Johnson Signs the Military Spouse Employment Partnership to Help Service Member Spouses Build Careers According to the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), 77% of people who have a spouse in the military want—or need— work. But they face some unique statistical obstacles: Military spouses contend with a 24% unemployment rate and a 25% wage gap compared to people whose partners aren’t in the services.

Stats like these are why Johnson & Johnson just signed an agreement with the DOD called the Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP).

The goal: help people overcome career-building obstacles—such as frequent moves or gaps in employment history—that can arise when you’re married to a service member.

As part of this agreement, Johnson & Johnson pledges to help increase employment opportunities for military spouses at its operating companies by posting U.S. job listings on the MSEP portal by the fall of 2019.

The company also vows to promote talent development; ensure pay equity for all military spouses; and support their unique professional needs, even if they need to relocate for their spouse’s assignment.

Chicago Urban League Names New President and CEO

A little over a year ago, the Chicago Urban League announced that their president and CEO at the time, Shari Runner, would be stepping down. Since that time, Barbra Lumpkin has been serving as the interim CEO. Recently, the Chicago Urban League announced that Karen Freeman-Wilson will be joining the team early next year to serve as the organization’s next president and CEO. The Chicago Urban League was founded over 100 years ago to focus on the needs of African Americans as they were relocating from the south to the north during the great migration.

Ever since then, the organization has been steadily adapting to the changing needs of Chicago’s African American residents and has continued to operate under their original goal of strengthening the communities they are serving.

Freeman-Wilson is currently serving as the Mayor of Gary, Ind. and is the State of Indiana’s first black female Mayor. Freeman-Wilson has served in the public and non-profit sectors most of her professional life and previously held positions as the Indiana Attorney General, the Director of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission, and was the presiding judge of the Gary City Court, according to information provided by the Chicago Urban League.

“Karen Freeman-Wilson has a depth of leadership experience and a demonstrated passion for the issues of equality and social justice that are central to the mission of the Chicago Urban League,” said Eric Smith, Chicago Urban League board chairman. “We are confident that she will be a strong, visionary leader who will continue to advance the organization’s excellent work toward serving the needs of African American communities and advocating for equity.”

After her term as Mayor concludes on Dec. 31, Freeman-Wilson will make her way to Chicago and assume her role at the Chicago Urban League. Barbara Lumpkin will remain active as the interim president until that time.

Lumpkin and her predecessors who have been amazing community advocates for justice, housing, employment, and business development. Over the past year, despite the lack of a permanent president and CEO, the Chicago Urban League has remained vigilant in their efforts to provide resources in Chicago’s African American communities. Over the past year, Lumpkin and Chicago Urban League staff released the organization’s State of Black Chicago report and the Money and Power: The Economic and Political Impact of the 2020 Census on Illinois report.

“We are sincerely grateful to Barbara for her contributions toward advancing the Chicago Urban League’s longstanding work in connecting people to jobs, affordable housing, educational opportunities and resources to grow their businesses and careers,” said Smith.

Back to School, Back to Work – But First Get a Permit School either has or is about to start for Illinois students. Lots of those young people will do more than homework.

They’ll get a job. And if you’re under 16 years old and you get a job, you also need to get a work permit.

Minors who are 14 or 15 may work in Illinois, but they must first obtain an employment certificate. Illinois’ child labor law is designed to protect the physical safety of children on the job as well as to make their education a priority.

“It’s very admirable to see young people who want to go to work, but child labor laws are necessary to make sure kids stay safe and don’t let their jobs get in the way of their school work,” said Michael Kleinik, director of the Illinois Department of Labor.

Fourteen- and 15-year-olds seeking employment need to start by getting a letter of intent to hire from their prospective employer. The letter should describe the

type of work and the hours to be worked.

The young person and a parent or guardian must take the letter to their school or school district office to request an employment certificate. The issuing school administrator will review criteria and any safety issues to determine whether to issue the work permit.

Employers who employ teens under 16 without having a work permit on the premises are subject to fines by the Department of Labor.

Children 14 and 15 years of age may work up to three hours per school day and up to 24 hours per week when school is in session. The combined hours of school and work cannot exceed eight hours per day.

When school is not in session – summer vacations, holidays and weekends – the restrictions are no more than eight hours per day, no more than six days per week and no more than 48 hours per week.

These young people can work between

the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. except between June 1 and Labor Day when the evening hours can be extended to 9 p.m.

Some exceptions to the Illinois Child Labor Law do exist. The law does not apply to the sale and delivery of magazines and newspaper outside the hours that school is in attendance. Likewise, jobs in private homes such as baby-sitting or yard work are exceptions and do not require a work permit.

The law also seeks to keep younger workers safe. It prohibits 14- and 15-yearolds from working in businesses where alcohol is served, on construction jobs, at service stations and other places that might include dangerous work or machinery.

Cook County Health Files State Application to Construct New Inpatient and Outpatient Facility on the Provident Hospital Campus Cook County Health (CCH) has filed a Certificate of Need (CON) application with the Illinois Health Facilities & Services Review Board (IHFSRB), and, if approved, plans to build a modern and efficient inpatient and outpatient facility on a vacant parcel immediately west of and adjacent to the current Provident Hospital located at 500 E. 51st Street, Chicago. The new facility will include expanded outpatient services and downsized inpatient facilities.

“Provident Hospital has served as a beacon of hope since it first opened in 1891 as an African-American hospital. Its contributions to modern medicine should not be forgotten. The nation’s first open heart surgery was performed at Provident

by Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, a prominent African-American physician and Provident was home to the first nursing school for black women in Chicago. And while Cook County did not own the facility back then, it is our responsibility to carry its legacy forward. The construction of a new facility represents a true and lasting commitment to the patients we serve and our greater community,” said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. “It is not just about replacing outdated facilities, but about the promise this project brings to people in Cook County who are in need of expert health care.”

Currently, Provident Hospital has state authorization for 85 (79 medical/surgical and six ICU) beds. If approved by the state, the new facility will include a smaller replacement hospital with 42 medical/surgical beds and 6 ICU beds; 8 operating suites as well as 70 outpatient exam rooms for the provision of comprehensive outpatient primary and specialty care, laboratory, diagnostic, dental, behavioral health and pharmacy services. A comprehensive emergency department with 18 bays is also planned.

CCH also expects that the new facility will reduce the number of Provident patients having to travel to the Stroger campus for services not currently provided on the Provident campus. The new eight-story facility will cost approximately $240M. The debt service on the new facility will be paid for by the health system through patient revenues not local tax dollars.

“With this project we are coming closer to realizing our future as a modern, integrated person-centered health system, providing expert care while fulfilling our historical mission to care for all,” said Dr. Jay Shannon, CEO, CCH. “Our patients deserve no less.”

In 2018, Provident Hospital provided more than $20M in charity care, a number that has been on the rise for the last several years despite declining local taxpayer support. CCH continues to generate more than 95% of its operating revenues.

CCH’s strategic plan, IMPACT 2020, laid out two critical strategies – the long overdue need to update, upgrade and even rebuild facilities to ensure that CCH is providing state-of-the-art care to its patients and the need to attract new, insured patients to ensure CCH can remain true to its historic mission. To that end, CCH recently opened a new outpatient facility on its central campus as well as a new community health center in Arlington Heights.

Later this year, new community health centers will open in North Riverside and Blue Island. CCH recently broke ground on a new facility in the Belmont-Cragin neighborhood expected to open in late 2020.

In addition to the expansion of high-quality inpatient and outpatient services, the new Provident facility is expected to maintain 450 full-time jobs and add as many as 90 new jobs when it is fully operational.

Provident has served as an anchor in Chicago’s South Side community since it first opened its doors as a privately owned community hospital in 1891. The private owners closed the facility in 1987. In 1991, Cook County purchased the hospital and reopened it in 1993 as a public hospital serving the community.

Survey: 96% Of Managers Say Their Staff Are Experiencing Some Degree Of Burnout The country is nearly at full employment, but U.S. workers may also be approaching full burnout. On the heels of the World Health Organization defining it as a syndrome resulting from workplace stress, a recent survey from staffing firm Accountemps found that nearly all senior managers (96%) believe their team members are experiencing some degree of burnout. In a separate survey, 91% of workers said they are at least somewhat burned out.

Senior managers were asked to report the level of burnout among employees on a scale of 1 (not at all burned out) to 10 (completely burned out), and the average was 5.6. One in 5 respondents rated their team’s burnout level 8 or higher. Workers also cited an average burnout level of 5.6, with more than a quarter of respondents (28%) falling within the 8 to 10 range.

Workers and managers alike seem to agree burnout is an issue, but they don’t see eye to eye on the main reason. When given a list of factors that may be contributing to employee burnout, workers ranked constant interruptions first, while senior managers believed unmanageable workloads were the biggest issue for their teams.

“Employees are often OK with working hard if they know that their efforts will not go

unnoticed by their employers and it helps them advance their careers,” said Michael Steinitz, senior executive director of Accountemps, a division of Robert Half. “However, maintaining high productivity cannot come at the expense of staff members’ well-being and engagement.”

Steinitz offered advice for organizations facing staffing challenges: “Managers need to identify responsibilities that can be reassigned or put on hold. They can also bring in temporary professionals to alleviate heavy workloads, support day-to-day needs and assist with projects requiring specialized skills. Companies that don’t take steps to prevent employee burnout could drive top performers away and find themselves in a bigger pinch.”

Expo Chicago Partners With Citywide Cultural Institutions For Annual Expo Art Week EXPO CHICAGO, The International Exposition of Contemporary and Modern Art, recently announced the eighth annual EXPO ART WEEK, September 16 – 22, 2019. With the exposition as its centerpiece (September 19 – 22), EXPO ART WEEK—presented in conjunction with Choose Chicago, the city’s tourism and marketing organization, and Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE)—features museum exhibitions, gallery openings and special events in partnership with the city’s most prestigious cultural institutions.

Stony Island Arts Bank In The Absence of Light: Gesture, Humor and Resistance in The Black Aesthetic Selections from the Beth Rudin DeWoody Collection Bringing together artistic practices that not only reveal some sense of interiority, but

by their very nature, reflect distance through laughter, painting gesture and isolation—the Rebuild Foundation partnered with Beth Rudin DeWoody to share the works of over 20 of today’s most important practitioners within the contemporary art world. Navy Pier The Ship of Tolerance The Ilya and Emilia Kabakov Foundation presents The Ship of Tolerance, a multidimensional project, featuring a largescale installation of a ship located in Polk Bros.

More Families Have a Plan to Pay for College (StatePoint) College may be getting more expensive, but new research suggests that more families are preparing to meet those costs one way or another.

Eighty percent of families say they are confident in how they paid for college last year, and nearly half have a plan to pay for all years of college, according to “How America Pays for College 2019,” a recent study from Sallie Mae and Ipsos, an independent global market research company.

All this preparation could be attributed to the fact that the overwhelming majority of families recognize the value of higher education, with 90 percent of families agreeing college is an investment.

“The individual and socio-economic benefits of a college education are clear, so it’s particularly gratifying to see that families continue to view college as a worthwhile investment,” says Raymond J. Quinlan, chairman and CEO, Sallie Mae. On average, families report spending

$26,226 on college in academic year 201819, with a sizeable portion of costs -- 43 percent -- covered out-of-pocket through income and savings.

Scholarships, grants, and gifts -- used by 82 percent of families -- covered 33 percent of costs, and that “free money” can be especially important, both logistically and psychologically, opening doors to opportunities that would be otherwise unavailable and even making a difference in the way students view the college experience as a whole.

The study also found that while borrowing covered 24 percent of overall college costs, 57 percent of the families who borrowed to pay for college say they had always planned to do so as part of their paying-for-college strategy. What’s more, many families are getting a head start on paying their loans back, with 41 percent making payments on student loans while the student is in school.

Families are being proactive in other ways, too. Seventy-seven percent of families completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2018-
