AUGUST IS NATIONAL IMMUNIZATION AWARENESS MONTH Although school will look different this year because of (COVID-19), whether it’s remote learning, in the classroom, or a hybrid, kids should still receive their routine vaccinations.

“While much of our focus is on COVID-19 these days, we must continue to take care of all of our health needs,” said Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike. “Vaccines are one of the safest and most effective methods to protect children from more than a dozen vaccinepreventable diseases. Make sure your children are fully vaccinated so they can be as healthy as possible while facing the ongoing risk of COVID-19.”

IDPH is teaming up with the Illinois Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (ICAAP) on a social media campaign that will raise awareness of the importance of vaccines. The immunization requirements for the 2020-2021 school year are the same as last year. The requirements can be found on the www.dph.illinois.gov under immunizations.

Vaccines are not just for kids, however. Vaccines are recommended throughout our lives. During National Immunization Awareness Month, IDPH is asking everyone to check their vaccination history and talk with their health care provider.

EEOC RESUMES ISSUANCE OF CHARGE CLOSURE DOCUMENTS The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) recently announced that it will begin issuing charge closure documents that were suspended because of the COVID-19 pandemic. On March 21, 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the EEOC temporarily suspended the issuance of charge closure documents unless a charging party requested them.

EEOC managers and supervisors have started reviewing charge resolution recommendations and the EEOC will begin issuing Notices of Right to Sue (Notices) both for charges that were held in suspense, as well as for charge resolutions that occur on and after Monday, August 3, 2020. The Notices held in suspense will be issued over the course of the next six to eight weeks beginning with those that have been in suspense the longest. All Notices will be issued by mail.

The Department of Justice, which issues Notices in investigations involving state and local governments, referred to them by the EEOC, is also now resuming the issuance of Notices.

Once a charging party receives a Notice, a lawsuit must be filed within 90 days of their receipt of that notice. This deadline is set by law and cannot be changed by the EEOC. A charging party must file a lawsuit within the established timeframe or may be prevented from going forward with the lawsuit. Community organization in Bronzeville to use grant to help restart economy Continued from page 1

Local Initiatives Support Corporation Chicago partnered with Mars Wrigley Foundation to award community organizations with placemaking grants. Quad Communities Development Corporation in Bronzeville was one of the recipients of the $25,000 grant, which they will use to help restart the neighborhood’s local economy.

Lauren Lewis is the Assistant Program Officer of the Neighborhood Network for LISC Chicago.

Lewis said Mars Wrigley Foundation and Anne Vela-Wagner reached out to LISC Chicago in 2019 because the philanthropic arm wanted to release funding. “These placemaking opportunities were things that were for the community and in some type of capacity, led by the community, and to continue positive activities within the area,” said Lewis.

Grant recipients for 2019 included Austin Coming Together, as well as Garfield Park Community Council and Accion Chicago.

“Community connectivity is more important than ever, but looks different due to social distancing guidelines,” Meghan Harte, LISC Chicago executive director, said in a release. “We are committed to helping develop physical and social assets to strengthen Chicago neighborhoods and support the impactful work that community-led organiwww.citizennewspapergroup.com

zations are doing on a daily basis, and we’re thrilled to partner with Mars Wrigley on this important work.”

Lewis said because of COVID-19, LISC Chicago was considering not doing a placemaking grant for 2020. However, the team heard from the communities LISC partners with regularly and they said those resources were necessary for these community organizations to continue their work, especially with the civil unrest, looting and rioting.

Lewis said Quad Communities Development Corporation was chosen to continue to highlight, uplift and support the local economy with its project, Bronzeville Resilience. She said the community was affected by the looting in June. “The whole strip of 47th was really damaged and a lot of those businesses are Black-owned and their project Bronzeville Resilience highlights that. We felt that in an effort to keep Bronzeville and its Blackness from the Great Migration, it was important to support things that support Black economics,” she said.

Yvette Warren is a community engagement strategist with Quad Communities Development Corporation. “Since mid-March, our focus has been in supporting our businesses through this trilogy of pandemics of COVID-19, civil unrest and economic disparity and the affects of that,” she said.

Warren said the Bronzeville

Resilience project was born out of an idea that she and Quad Communities Development Corporation Executive Director Rhonda Mc Farland had to give support, energy and hope to the community as the businesses were set to open after months of being closed due to COVID-19. “We had this plan we had been discussing and we were immediately focused on launching it, to help our community and our businesses understand that we are resilient, and our community has a legacy of being resilient, that we would get through what we were going through and come out even better and stronger,” she said.

“Bronzeville Resilience has become our overarching theme for the remainder of 2020.”

Warren added with the grant, Quad Communities Development Corporation will continue to do Bronzeville Summer Nights in a more creative way. It has an ambassador engine, a fire truck, with a 12- foot television monitor that plays the live stream as it drives through the community.

“The beauty of this campaign is that the businesses and community have embraced it. They are feeling the energy that we wanted. The business community [is] working together as a collective to proclaim that we are here to stay and that we will be better and stronger.

And, with that, the residents are really embracing the messaging as well and supporting our local businesses,” she said.

United States Postal Service files notice of a temporary price change The United States Postal Service has filed notice with the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) of a temporary price change to take effect on Oct. 18, 2020.

The planned temporary price adjustments are in response to increased expenses and heightened demand for online shopping package volume due to the coronavirus pandemic and expected holiday ecommerce, according to a news release.

As a result of these changing market conditions, the Postal Service is planning a time-limited price increase on all commercial domestic competitive package volume from Oct. 18 until Dec. 27, 2020.

Retail prices and international products will be unaffected. The planned price increase would go into effect at 12:00AM Central on Oct.18, 2020 and remain in place until 12:00AM Central Dec. 27, 2020.

The planned prices, approved by the Governors of the Postal Service on August 6, would raise prices on its commercial domestic competitive parcels – Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, First-Class Package Service, Parcel Select, and Parcel Return Service.

This time-limited adjustment will increase prices for commercial customers in line with competitive practices without impacting customers at the retail level. In doing this, the Postal Service said, in a news release, that it’s protecting the retail consumer during a vulnerable economic period while increasing prices on commercial volume during heightened volume levels.

According to a news release, no structural changes are planned as part of this limited time pricing initiative and the Governors believe these temporary rates will keep the Postal

The forecasted additional revenue from the time-limited increase will depend on the volume of packages shipped between Oct. 18 and Dec. 27 at commercial rates.

If favorably reviewed by the PRC, the

planned price changes will include increases on various products. The PRC will review the prices before they are scheduled to take effect on Oct.18, 2020. change tables are also available on the Postal Service’s Postal Explorer website at pe.usps. com/PriceChange/Index.

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.

Camelot Illinois Announces Second Year of Grant Funding Camelot Illinois has announced a second year of funding for non-profit organizations through the Camelot Illinois Grant Program.

Over the past year, Camelot Illinois has supported the community with grants and donations totalling $241,800.

Funds provided by the Camelot Illinois Grant Program accounted for the majority of this total. Seven organizations received $196,800 in total grant funding to use for education and community programming.

“Camelot Illinois is committed to education equality, opportunity and inclusion,” said Camelot Illinois General Manager and General Counsel Keith Horton. “Over the past two years, we have looked beyond our walls to support education and development opportunities in

ways that meet the needs of our community. The Camelot Illinois Grant Program is one way that we proudly show our support for worthy causes throughout the state.”

Non-profit organizations, including Chicago Latino Caucus Foundation, Lost Boyz Inc., Genesys Works, Step Up, The Black Star Project and Ladies of Virtue, received grants ranging from $10,000 to $25,000 to support educational development.

Additionally, the Children First Fund, the Chicago Public Schools Foundation, received a grant of $96,500. This grant funded the expansion of the robotics program at Walter H. Dyett High School and the creation of the John A. Walsh Elementary School’s new computer science lab, Maker’s Space.

“Quality STEM programming has

the ability to open a world of opportunities for our students and show them the endless power of learning,” said Chicago Public Schools (CPS) CEO Dr. Janice K. Jackson. “Central to our vision at CPS is ensuring that every student has access to a high-quality holistic education that gives them the tools they need to lead our city into the future and we are grateful to Camelot’s generous grant that will expand access to state-of-the-art STEM resources.”

In support of emerging community needs during the year, Camelot also donated a total of $45,000 to Cradles to Crayons, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, My Block My Hood My City and the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

evolve, just like the rest of the world,” said Horton. “In response to the pandemic and civil unrest, we adapted our original grant model to contribute $45,000 in donations toward areas of our communities that were experiencing more urgent need, including COVID-19 relief and social justice for racial disparities. We look forward to working with more local non-profits to benefit communities across Illinois in the second year of our Grant Program.”

During the 2021 fiscal year, Camelot Illinois will continue to support non-profit organizations that do good work in Illinois. Grants are intended to fund programs that foster educational opportunities, support technology initiatives or promote community and neighborhood development.

To be eligible for the Camelot Illinois Grant Program, an entity must be a registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization in the State of Illinois for at least five years, be in good standing with the State of Illinois and be in compliance with Illinois law.

Organizations must complete a written grant application and be willing to sign a grant agreement with Camelot Illinois. Grant applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Grant reviews take place in January, April, July and October.

Walsh Construction completes historic transformation of Chicago’s old Cook County Hospital into dual branded Hyatt hotel Walsh Construction, one of the largest contractors in the City of Chicago and across the United States, has completed the historic rehabilitation of the 104-year-old Cook County Hospital building, converting the building into a dual branded Hyatt Place and Hyatt House hotel, accompanied by the new Dr. Murphy’s Food Hall.

The transformative project is the first phase and anchor for Harrison Square, a new micro-neighborhood that will add residential, office, retail and hotel space in the area immediately surrounding the former hospital within the Illinois Medical District.

The project was directed by the Civic Health Development Group, a joint venture led by Chicago-based Murphy Development Group along with MB Real Estate, Walsh Investors and The Granite Cos. Inc. The 345,000-square-foot old Cook County Hospital was decommissioned in 2002 and remained vacant for more than 15 years, disquieting preservationists, historians, and other concerned citizens that the magnificent Beaux Arts building was at risk of demolition.

Those fears were relieved when it was officially announced in 2018 that the prominent medical institution would be given life once more.

The development converted the former hospital and medical college into a 210-room dual branded Hyatt House and Hyatt Place hotel. The project also delivers medical office and retail spaces and the 10,000-square-foot Dr. Murphy’s Food Hall, named in honor of the renowned surgeon, Dr. John Benjamin Murphy, who studied, practiced and taught within Cook County Hospital and the Illinois Medical District.

cant place in the history of Chicago as its first public hospital.

The building also includes a museum that chronicles the hospital’s noteworthy contributions to the region and to the medical field.

“The old Cook County Hospital is rich in history, having served our community and nation for over a century, while at the same time being a fountain of medical research, innovation, and advancements,” said Dan Walsh, co-chairman of Walsh Construction. “The Walsh Group is proud to have played a leading role in saving and transforming this unique historic structure; and delivering a reborn building that welcomes visitors and economic revival to the Near West Side of Chicago for another 100 years.”

Restoring a Landmark Walsh Construction began renovations at

the top floor and proceeded to work down to ground level, crews removed all interior partitions, leaving a clear floor plate nearly 550 feet long and 70 feet wide. Once the floor plate was cleared, new composite decks were installed.

The original terrazzo flooring was completely refurbished, and the intricate interior moldings were meticulously repaired to its original condition.

On the exterior of the building, masons labored to preserve, repair and recreate the historic $18 million façade, requiring more than 4,160 individual pieces of terra cotta to be repaired or duplicated by Gladding, McBean – one of only two terra cotta manufacturers in the United States.

“This project is based upon community revival and opportunity for the local workforce and the Near West Side community,” said Jeff Pezza, vice president at Walsh Construction. “A tremendous amount of gratitude must be given to our dedicated project team, and especially the elected officials, organizations and individuals like Larry Huggins from The Granite Companies who helped champion this project across Chicago.”

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, Alderman Walter Burnett, Jr., Alderman Jason Ervin, Cook County Commissioner Dennis Deer, Joe Williams from the Target Group and Rachel Ivy from Communities Empowered Through Construction played impactful roles in community participation and outreach.

Throughout the course of renovations, Walsh Construction sponsored two eightweek pre-apprenticeship programs, which allowed candidates to gain construction exposure and experience by participating in the old Cook County Hospital project.

Pre-Apprentices shadowed management staff, superintendents. Industry-based training was also made available, including flagging certification, fall protection, confined space and first aid. After completion of the program, the pre-apprentice candidates were hired directly into local trades.

“The reborn Cook County Hospital will further energize the Medical District and supplement the neighboring healthcare institutions,” said Tom Caplis, vice president of healthcare at Walsh Construction. “This building has been rejuvenated and will serve as a place of history, comfort and hospitality to all who visit.”

“Each generation is having a different experience during the pandemic.

This is important to understand, as organizations must remotely lead four or five generations simultaneously.

Gen Z’s emergence could herald in a new era of hybrid work that is normal to them and for the youngest members of Gen Z, all they’ve ever known,” says Denise Villa, Ph.D.,

The event was planned by the “Big Six” leaders of reform organizations, including Dr. King and Congressman John Lewis.

During this event, John Lewis spoke passionately about the change that was needed in America. Later in the program, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his memorable “I Have a Dream” speech, in which he called for civil and economic equal rights and an end to systemic racism in the United States.

Jocelyn Donald, better known as Jozzy, is a celebrated songwriter hailing from Memphis, Tennessee who has collaborated with top talent such as Beyoncé, Pharrell Williams, Timbaland, Missy Elliot, Usher, Summer Walker, Lil Wayne, Coldplay, Ella Mai, 21 Savage, and many more.

Among her most notable work was pioneering a blend of hip-hop and country by writing Billy Ray Cyrus’s verse on Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road Remix.” The track spent a record-shattering nineteen weeks at No.1, gained a Grammy nomination for Record of The Year, and won a Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.

Jozzy is currently at work on a forthcoming EP called Soul Therapy: Apartment 215, and released singles including “Let You Down Let You Go” and “I’m Gone” featuring Tommy Genesis. Jozzy has also embraced activism; as an LGBTQ+, woman of color, she has repeatedly spoken out about the issues she faces and her hope for more diverse voices to be recognized in all areas of the music industry.

• Draw and Paint: The next time kids sit down for arts and crafts, encourage them to draw portraits of their favorite characters or scenery from the show. Experiment with different supplies -from crayons and colored pencils to watercolors and clay. Then create a gallery for kids to display their artwork.
