American Composers Forum presents concert of world premieres with Chicago’s acclaimed Great Black Music Ensemble, celebrating 55th anniversary of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians Premiering newly commissioned works by The Honourable Elizabeth A. Baker, Adegoke Steve Colson and Rudresh Mahanthappa The American Composers Forum (ACF) is proud to announce the culminating event of its two-year partnership with the Chicago-based, internationallyrenowned Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and its Great Black Music Ensemble: a concert celebrating the 55th anniversary of AACM, taking place at AACM’s long-time partner the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts (915 E. 60th Street) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30. The Great Black Music Ensemble features some of Chicago’s most visionary artists of improvisation and creative music. Chicago’s new safe digging “ambassadog” is Questa, a pandemic pup who moved here to get adopted and chase rabbits Chicago — Peoples Gas has unveiled Questa — a hound dog who moved to Chicago from Oklahoma — as the company’s new safe digging “ambassadog.” Questa’s new job title was announced this morning at Lincoln Park Zoo, where the pup proudly stood before cameras.

Questa is three years old and has a heartwarming backstory.

She moved to Chicago from Oklahoma after a family in the Andersonville neighborhood agreed to foster her during the COVID-19 pandemic. Questa was very sick at the time with heartworm, ringworm and hookworm. The family nursed her back to health and adopted her. Then they discovered her passion for digging.

Questa uses her fast, strong paws and master sniffing skills to dig for rabbits in her backyard. She digs a hole, sticks her entire head inside, makes weird loud noises, and loves playing chase with the rabbits once she finds them. She even digs in deep snow!

Questa became the safe digging ambassadog after entering the Peoples Gas Doggone it! contest, in which customers send in photos of their dogs digging. The public voted online to decide which pupper won — and was impressed by Questa’s adorable face and fierce digging style. For the next year, Questa will be featured in Peoples Gas promotional campaigns to raise awareness about safe digging.

About 811 Day and safe digging Questa’s big win was announced on national 811 Day, which is held every year on Aug. 11 (8/11). It’s a day to elevate awareness about the need for people to call 811 two days before starting any outdoor digging project. Digging without knowing where utility lines (natural gas, electric, water, sewer, communications) are can lead to line strikes, serious injury, and property damage. When Chicagoans in the city and suburbs call 811 at least 48 hours in advance, expert technicians will come to their properties, at no charge, and mark the spots where underground utility lines are located. The idea is simple: Know what’s below. Calling 811 before digging also is required by law.

New Belt law speeds up airport construction Major Illinois airports will directly receive and spend federal funding thanks to a measure sponsored by State Senator Christopher Belt (DSwansea) that was signed into law Friday.

The new law allows Illinois airports that have 10,000 or more patrons per year to directly receive and spend federal funding. Under the current law, federal funding goes to the Illinois Department of Transportation’s aeronautics division to distribute to airports across the state, with the exception of O’Hare and Midway International Airports in Chicago.

“This will give the major airports in Illinois the authority to make their own financial decisions in a timely manner,” Belt said. “This should help IDOT get these important projects done faster and reduce a considerable backlog.”

Currently, IDOT must approve all planning, construction, development and improvements to hangars. The approval process for these contracts has caused significant delays, and this measure would take the pressure off of IDOT and allow individual airports to move forward with projects on their own timelines.

“Larger airports in Illinois have the resources to manage the funding and make necessary decisions for the projects,” Belt said. “It’s important we include all major airports in the state, not just O’Hare and Midway, to speed up the approval process.”

The law takes effect Jan. 1, 2022.

State Senator Robert Peters Signs New Legislation Benefiting Chicgao Public Schools Recently celebrated the signing of legislation he sponsored that would allow local school councils of Chicago Public Schools to fill vacancies in almost any situation under the Peters Law. “Parents, students and other members of the community have the right to have a say in how the schools in their area are run, and local school councils are how that right is realized,” Peters said. “If a small technical rule prevents them from being able to meet, then they need to have the recourse to fix that issue, and this law accomplishes this.”

In general, a local school council is not prevented from filling its own vacancies; however, when membership drops below the minimum number required to start a meeting, LSCs often find their hands tied. Senate Bill 652 lowers the minimum number of member required from seven to four so that vacancies can always be filled – even in situations with a large number of vacancies.

“We’re coming out of a global pandemic that put the future of public education into a state of uncertainty, so it’s extremely important that local school councils are still able to meet and make decisions about how schools are run,” Peters said.

The new law is effective immediately. Earlier in the year, it had passed both chambers of the General Assembly with no opposition.

Senator Martwick Law Will Strengthen Chicago Park District Pension System State Senator Robert Martwick (D-Chicago) sponsored a new law that would help in securing the future of the pension system of the Chicago Park District by requiring it to follow expert recommendations, ensuring park district employees receive the money they’re owed in retirement.

“Many people rely on their pensions for financial security later in life,” Martwick said. “Ensuring the Chicago Park District pays its pensions according to industry standards will help it get back on track and ensure its employees have the funds necessary to retire.”

House Bill 417 eliminates the “multiplier” employee contribution method and instead mandates actuarially required payments be made based on real actuarial calculations by 2024. This law also provides a payment ramp for the Chicago Park District, which requires a $40 million employer contribution in 2021.

It also permits the district to issue up to $250 million in pension obligation bonds.

“Park district employees work hard and deserve to collect the pensions they’ve earned,” Martwick said. “Instead of kicking the can down the road on the pension funding problem, we’re fixing it now.”

The new law was signed by the governor on Friday and takes effect immediately.

Ark Entrepreneurial Center partners with the Citizen Newspaper Group to prepare young moguls for the Black Women’s Expo Continued from page 1

Sunny Davis Nicholson wanted to create a place where young people would learn skills that would set them up for future success.

Davis Nicholson started Ark Entrepreneurial Center, located at 2458 S. Millard Ave. She describes it as a youth business school.

As CEO of Ark Entrepreneurial Center, Davis-Nicholson forsees that with automation, a lot of jobs won’t exist in the future. The goal of Ark Entrepreneurial Center is to develop a program for young people, ages 7-18, and teach them skills that will allow them to be successful later in life. Programs include web design, graphic design and app development.

“To have kids come to a program where they learn about business, they take classes in business development, they take financial literacy … They take all of these classes from people in the community that’s willing to pour into our children,” she said.

Through repetition, hands-on projects and project-based learning, the children are able to retain what they have learned. It leaves a lasting impact on them. At the end of each session, what the children learned is posted on social media.

Some children don’t have skills and they learn a skill. Others have a skill and don’t know how to market it. That’s where experts in marketing come in to teach those children.

The expert’s range in talent from performers to graphic designers, as well as small businesses owners.

Davis Nicholson found that the children’s parents were willing to send them to the program, despite the COVID-19 pandemic. She was able to reassure the parents it was a safe and nurturing environment for their children to attend.

Once the parents talked to their children and sat in on the classes and saw the knowledge they were retaining, they were in awe.

Davis Nicholson is excited about the stock investment classes. Children learn about investing and using the money they earned while working with One Summer Chicago and the Free Lunch Academy.
