Black Girl Magic Mural Project Popping Up Around the South Side Continued from page 1

The phrase Black Girl Magic can mean something different to everyone but currently for Chris Devins, a local muralist and urban planner, it is his inspiration and the theme of his most recent public art project on the south side of Chicago. Though the Black Girl Magic art project, Devins is hoping to showcase a different aspect of the African American community, compared to what is portrayed in mainstream media, and to inspire young girls in the community.

The art project started out normal for Devins, who has been the lead artists on several major mural projects across the south side. He began taking photos of black women that he found to be inspiring and creating a larger image out of those photos that will be pasted onto a building somewhere on the south side for the public to view sometimes this year.

“I make my murals out of photos instead of painting them and one of the reasons I do that is because a lot of the painted murals are permanent and some of the photo murals I do are temporary. I do them on paper and then I paste them on the building so they don’t damage the building. It’s a constructive way to add something to the buildings on the south side without tagging them with paint or something permanent like that,” said Devins.

While Devins was planning his Black Girl Magic mural, a young black girl, Nia Wilson, was stabbed to death on a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station platform in Oakland, Calif. and Devins said he was disappointed with the coverage of her death, so he decided to honor her by adding another element to his art project. Devins began taking photos of black women holding signs with #IAmNiaWilson printed on them and using these photos to create several temporary photo murals that are on display now.

“I’m trying to add topics and responses

to the conversations of Chicago’s corporate media about how they portray the south side. That’s where the concept of Black Girl Magic came in,” said Devins. “I just thought that it was time to focus on some of the aspects and some of the positive things that have been going on specifically as it relates to African American females.

Devins is planning on having the Black Girl Magic mural completed before winter hits.

He is still working on finalizing a location but is confident that he will have no trouble connecting with a property owner on the south side that will want to display the mural.

“I feel like this will give the young black girls something to look up to and some pride,” said Devins. “I also think just seeing themselves on the street displayed like that will make them feel safer as they walk past some of these abandoned buildings.”

ACCESS TO JUVENILE RECORDS ALLOWED UNDER NEW LAW Illinois youth and their guardians will no longer be prevented from accessing their investigation and arrest records under Senate Bill 2915, sponsored by State Senator John G. Mulroe (D-Chicago).

“It’s important for minors, their family and their legal representation to have access to their records,” Mulroe said.

Under current law, minors cannot receive a copy of their own records before their 18th birthday, nor can their guardians or lawyers. However, law enforcement and prosecutors can access a juvenile’s record.

“It’s important to balance protecting a juvenile’s identity with ensuring that the right people have access to information to help them,” Mulroe said.

Additionally, Senate Bill 2915 requires juvenile court proceedings to be expunged by the arresting agency within 60 days of receiving the expungement order. The legislation, which was signed into law recently, takes effect immediately.

Founder of True Beauty Eagle Foundation Calls Herself a Life Journey Tour Guide For Youth

VaLaurie Humphrey went from college flunkout to front office administrator, motivational speaker, mentor, and founder of the True Eagle Beauty foundation, a non-profit organization that provides programming and mentors to build self-esteem for Chicago’s youth. She has made a name for herself by sharing her story.

CITIZEN: In your own words, who is VaLaurie Humphrey?

HUMPHREY: She is a college flunk-out that became a front office administrator at a middle school. Her journey hasn’t been perfect but it has turned out pretty great. She now travels the country providing personal and professional development in the education arena for students, parents, educators, and administrators. Without a doubt, she is more than a conqueror.

CITIZEN: What are some of your personal passions and experiences that led you to start the True Eagle Beauty Foundation?

HUMPHREY: Growing up I searched for love and affirmation from my peers and adults.

It took me well into my adult years to figure it out. I figured out that I had everything I needed, was right inside of me. I yearn for every young lady to learn this lesson early on and avoid some of the unnecessary pitfalls of life.

CITIZEN: What makes you a valuable source for the young women that you mentor?

HUMPHREY: I am their tour guide not their travel agent on their life journey. I proudly share my story of flunking out of college and ultimately getting myself back together enough to become an amazing school administrator.

I love connecting with youth, mainly the ones that others push aside.

My focus is always children first, not their issues or struggles. I look beyond their actions and see their needs.

tivational speaker, what do you focus on and what is the learning experience?

HUMPHREY: Speaking is that one thing that refuels me to keep pressing towards the goal of impacting as many lives as possible. I focus on the audience and their needs. We all want to be loved. My ultimate speaking goal is for everyone under the sound of my voice to become motivated enough to transform, by changing their actions which will inevitably

lead towards a more successful productive life.

CITIZEN: Throughout your career as a teacher, administrator, motivational speaker, and young women’s leader do you believe you have been able to make the impact that you wanted to and how does that feel?

HUMPHREY: The answer is yes and no...let me explain; the more I speak, the hungrier I get to continue on this journey. I feel that my impact

is apparent when those that I have poured into return to serve beside me at the foundation. I still have relationships with hundreds of my former students and mentors. The proud moments come when they reach out to share their accomplishments and share how I have impacted their lives. I absolutely love pouring into others.

I am gearing up to retire and take on providing personal and professional development full time very soon. I will continue to travel the country and impact billions of lives.

Black Fire Brigade Sends 30 Black Young Adults to EMT School Thanks to the generosity of donors who support its unique mission, the Black Fire Brigade has tripled the number of black youths it is funding to attend Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) school starting this month.

At the Black Fire Brigade’s grand opening in June, Lieutenant Quention Curtis, the organization’s president and founder, presented a check to send 10 young adults to

EMT school. After his subsequent television and radio segments, the brigade’s phone and inbox were flooded with inquiries from young black adults interested in EMT training – and with donors wanting to help. As a result, the Black Fire Brigade is now providing $30,000 for tuition, books, and uniforms so that 30 students can train for certification.

“Our kids can’t be what they don’t see,” Lt. Curtis says. “We’re proud to

stand strong on our mission of exposing as many black men and women as possible to public safety careers, and on our promise to remove financial barriers and help them attain highly sought positions in these fields.”

Completion of the EMT certification program is required to obtain an Illinois EMT license, which is transferrable nationwide. The training equips these future first-responders to handle situations ranging www.thechicagocitizen.com

Greencore Group appoints Anton Vincent as CEO of Greencore USA Greencore Group plc, a leading international manufacturer of convenience foods, recently announced the appointment of Anton Vincent as CEO of Greencore USA, a subsidiary of UK-listed Greencore plc.

Vincent joined the Group on July 9, 2018 and reports to Greencore Group CEO, Patrick Coveney. Vincent has over 20 years of leadership experience in the US food manufacturing industry and brings strong US food industry relationships to the Group. He joins Greencore from General Mills, where he most recently was the president of their $3 billion US Snacks division.

Vincent began his career at General Mills in 1993, progressing through leadership roles including executive roles as President of the Frozen Frontier division and President of the Baking division.

The American Red Cross of Chicago & Northern Illinois recently announced the appointment of Parrish Ivy to the organization’s board of directors.

Ivy is a principal in the multistate tax practice of Deloitte Tax LLP in the Chicago office and has 16 years of public accounting experience specializing in multistate income and franchise taxes. He started in public accounting in August of 2000 and joined Deloitte in May 2002. Ivy serves both public and closely held companies providing tax compliance and consulting services. Ivy specializes in audit defense, pre and postacquisition state tax planning and alternative investment assets. His clients include Parrish Ivy manufacturers, financial institutions, telecommunications companies, investment partnerships, hedge funds, fund of funds and private equity firms Ivy received his J.D. from the University of Illinois School of Law and also has a master’s in the science of taxation from University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana. CBCF Gears Up For 48th Annual Legislative Conference The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. (CBCF) recently announced, for the first time in the foundation’s history, two senators — Senator Cory Booker (New Jersey) and Senator Kamala D. Harris (California) — will serve as honorary co-chairs for the 48th Annual Legislative Conference (ALC), scheduled for September 12-16, 2018.

Historically, co-chairs have been members of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The premier conference, which takes place at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C., annually attracts nearly 10,000 people from across the world and is the only event of its kind in the United States.

The conference offers more than 90 forums on public policy issues affecting black Americans.

“For more than 40 years, the Annual Legislative Conference has provided an extraordinary platform for people — domestic and abroad — to come together and discuss vital issues related to social justice, leadership, economic prosperity, entrepreneurship and much more,” said Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, chair, CBCF Board of Directors.

“As we continue to grow and expand the conference, we know that we must be unwavering in our approach to have the difficult conversations, elevate debates about the state of Black America, and also define new and innovative solutions.”

The impact of civil and social movements over the last 50 years has played a major role in changing the trajectory of American history. This year’s ALC theme, “The Dream Still Demands,” focuses on the influence and legacy of these moments, while uplifting present-day champions in the fight for racial equality, justice and freedom.

“As we approach the 48th year of hosting the Annual Legislative Conference, we find ourselves in a critical time where, now more than ever, diverse voices are imperative to the future of this nation,” said A. Shuanise Washington, president and CEO, CBCF. “We must rise to meet the demands of the moment and capitalize on actionable outcomes that will advance black Americans

During the five-day conference, attendees will have the opportunity to delve into important conversations with industry leaders from across the globe on public health, gender equality, social mobility, LGBTQ rights and environmental sustainability, among many other topics.

ALC provides a safe haven for black Americans to contribute their experiences, knowledge, and opinions to a larger, national dialogue.

Music and Movies Under the Sun at the DuSable Museum of African American History The DuSable Museum of African American History continues it’s crowd-pleasing “summer celebration” of movies and music under the stars. The entertainment happens through Aug. 23, 2018 with all events taking place at the Museum, located on 740 East 56th Place (57th Street and South Cottage Grove Avenue) in Chicago…and best of all, admission is FREE! Check out these six tips.

1. Make a smooth transition. Been sleeping in all summer?

Now’s the time to get your body back into the routine of early mornings. Start slowly, setting the alarm earlier until you reach the time you’ll be waking up for the school year. Parents can assist younger kids with this transition.

2. Get the right education tools. From highlighters to USB drives to loose-leaf paper, be sure you have a comprehensive list of all the school supplies and education tools you’ll need for a successful year ahead. As far as tech tools like graphing calculators are concerned, opt for those that are jam packed with all the latest features.
