CHICAGO – The City of Chicago announced it has filed a civil complaint in the Circuit Court of Cook County against Monarch Legal, Strategic Financial Solutions, and Timothy Burnette, the head of Monarch Legal, for running a fraudulent debt resolution scheme that preys on hardworking Chicagoans struggling to pay off debt.

The Defendants portray themselves as a legitimate business that negotiates with creditors to resolve consumer debt for less than the amount owed and defends consumers from creditor lawsuits. But instead, Defendants engaged in unfair and deceptive business practices such as deploying misleading marketing tactics, collecting exorbitant up-front and monthly fees, and refusing to provide the legal services that consumers pay for. The City is seeking injunctive, monetary, and equitable relief for violations of the Municipal Code.

The City’s complaint alleges the Defendants lure consumers into their debt resolution program by making false promises about their refund policy, misrepresenting the amount of money consumers will save in the program, and tricking consumers into believing that attorneys will negotiate their settlements when that work is actually performed by non-lawyer contractors. In addition, consumers told the City that Defendants refused to represent them in court when sued by a creditor, leaving consumers who had paid for legal services to defend themselves in court.

The lawsuit claims the Defendants violate and continue to violate consumer protection laws and is asking the court to stop the Defendants from engaging in debt resolution activity in the City and assess fines for violations of the Chicago Municipal Code.

The City is represented in this lawsuit by in-house counsel from the Affirmative Litigation Division in its Department of Law. If any Chicago resident wishes to inform the City about their experience with Monarch Legal or other debt resolution programs, email consumerprotection@cityofchicago.org.

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs announced the winners of the 2022 Cream of the Crop Photo Contest, which encourages young photographers to share their vision of agriculture in our state.

Students who participated submitted up to two photos, and a panel of judges selected the winning entries.

The contest consisted of three age categories — ages 8-10, 11-14 and 15-18. Top winners were awarded Bright Start scholarship funds, with first-place winners in each age category receiving $1,000, second-place winners receiving $500, and third-place winners receiving $250. The winning students were permitted to receive one scholarship award.

The Cream of the Crop Photo Contest is part of the Ag Invest program in the treasurer’s office.

Ag Invest is one of the nation’s largest agricultural linked deposit programs, and it helps hundreds of Illinois farmers and agriculture professionals.

Through Ag Invest, the treasurer’s office partners with eligible financial institutions to offer farmers and ag businesses annual and long-term low-interest loans that can be used for operating costs, equipment purchases, construction-related expenses, and livestock purchases.

She vowed that one day she would go to Africa. In 1991, she took her first trip to Mali and Guinea.

That first trip led to others and Edwards continued to be fascinated by the land, the people and the art, which seemed endless. Each time she visited Africa, she traveled to different countries, buying art along the way. She was amazed by the variety and depth of the art in Africa. She also met with the people who created the work.

“The more I began to learn about what it really was, that these are spiritual pieces, that they are not made by just an artist. These people have been brought up in this way of life, they’re priests. There’s so much that goes into what they do, to make what we call the art,” she said.

Those trips and her African Art collection led her to open Faie Afrikan Art, located at 1005 E. 43rd Street.

During her trips, Edwards was surprised to learn how the art was crafted and what goes into making the art. There is a process to carving wood, which begins with a person asking permission of the tree to cut it. Once permission is given there is a process of preparing the wood so it can be carved.

Edwards has a piece in the gallery that is more than 2,500 years old. It isn’t a big piece. It is one of many pieces in the gallery that showcases art made by people brought up in the tradition of making that kind of art, in that specific way.

Edwards believes it is important for her to bring art

from the Continent of Africa back to Bronzeville because the people of Bronzeville are the direct descendants of the people who created the masterpieces in her gallery. She believes that the art should be shown in the communities where those descendants live, with dignity and respect. It is very important to her.

Edwards wants people to come into the gallery to learn more about African art. She has hosted talks about African art at her gallery. There also are books for people to come in and learn more about the art. Faye believes the energy from the authentic art adds energy to the space that people can’t imagine. She called the creation of the pieces spiritual work.

In addition to African art, there is also fine art, created

by Black artists. Edwards enjoys the work of artist George Crump because she says, it makes a person think at another level.

Edwards hopes that people walk away with a deeper understanding of the art, a deeper appreciation of what it took to make the pieces and a curiosity.

“There is a deep connection between the African and the African American,” she said.

Governor Pritzker Launches Illinois Cares for Kids Statewide Enrollment Campaign “I Got Love / ¡Siento Amor!”

CHICAGO – Governor JB Pritzker announced the launch of “I Got Love / ¡Siento Amor!”, the statewide enrollment campaign for childcare and early education services, featuring Illinois artists, musicians, and production partners.

Since March 2020, the state has provided $978 million in early childhood stability and recovery. While this investment allowed providers to keep their doors open (97% of licensed provider recipients remained open at the end of 2021), enrollment has decreased as an ongoing result of the pandemic.

To help increase early childhood and care enrollment statewide, the campaign is investing $12.7 million in amplifying information about Illinois’ one-stop-shop for all things early childhood, the Illinois Cares for Kids website, which has a search engine for local programs, information on child care subsidy programs, and many other resources on the importance of early learning. Illinois Cares for Kids is a place parents, grandparents, caretakers, teachers, and childcare providers can access all things related to early childhood in Illinois.

“We’re making Illinois the best state in the nation to raise a child – and it’s essential to ensure families have access to affordable early childhood education and care to build a strong foundation for a lifetime of learning,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “Illinois Cares for Kids helps Illinois families choose from hundreds of local providers to find the right match for their children.”

The ‘I Got Love / ¡Siento Amor! campaign is available in English and Spanish and features an Illinois-based local artistic collaboration spreading the message that Illinois is full of people who care. The campaign will target families in need of childcare and early learning supports to showcase the importance of early

learning programs and how the state can support families looking to enroll in one. “I Got Love’ / ¡Siento Amor! was a natural vehicle to musically convey the message. Nat King Cole, the singer of “I Got Love,” has roots in Illinois, having gained early fame as a piano player while living in Chicago.

The enrollment campaign is part of Governor Pritzker’s Learning Renewal Efforts and is a collaboration between the Governor’s Office of Early Childhood Development, Illinois Network of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies, Illinois Department of Human Services, and the Illinois Board of Higher Education.

“We want to increase awareness among families that early childhood education programs are consistently open, safe, and serving children. We want Illinois families to feel empowered to quickly and efficiently locate early childhood education educators and resources,” said Dr. Jamilah R. Jor’dan, Executive Director, Governor’s Office of Early Childhood Development.

The Illinois Department of Human Services, through the Division of Early Childhood, provided funding for community-based outreach grants. These grants support local community outreach to increase enrollment and are available to all 102 counties across Illinois. The state identified a need to reach communities and families with timely, accurate information necessary to make informed decisions about the well-being of their children. .”

The campaign also includes a statewide Text Messaging Platform, Ready for K, that offers fun facts and tips on children’s learning and development, available in multiple languages.

The State of Illinois is making monumental strides in efforts to go green. One of the ways that the state has been making efforts to go green is by pushing for the use of Electrical Vehicles(EVs). Commonwealth Edison Company (ComEd) is one of the major players in the movement. ComEd is one of the country’s largest utility holders, providing electrical services across northern Illinois for over 100 years.

On Wednesday, July 5th, ComEd’s CEO Gil Quinones , the community and regional partners unveiled a new Multi-Unit Dwelling Charging station (MUD) in the southside community of Bronzeville. “The charging station in Bronzeville is one of five EV charging stations made possible through a grant by the US Department of Energy.” said a ComEd spokesman. MUDs are charging stations for multifamily housing—also called multi-unit dwellings such as condos or apartments.

One of the biggest concerns for EVs is the charging stations. Unlike hybrid vehicles, EVs can only be charged electrically. However, many communities lack charging stations, which hinders people from purchasing EVs. “As part of ComEd’s Community of the Future, we are working with community leaders throughout Bronzeville to identify technology and educational needs in the neighborhood.

EV chargers are one of many projects identified. Some of these projects – including the installation of the remaining EV charging stations,were put on hold because of COVID-19. We hope to announce the installation of the remaining chargers over the next year,” stated a ComEd spokesman.

At this unveiling CEO Gil Quinones also unveiled a transformative

new plan to advance beneficial electrification, including clean transportation, to empower communities moving toward EV use.

The Beneficial Electric (BE) plan, filed with ComEd’s regulators at the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC), proposes a 3-year $100 million annual investment to promote equitable access to EVs, to reduce Illinois’ carbon footprint.

One major feature of the Beneficial Electric (BE) plan is reducing upfront costs and by generating investments in changing infrastructure across ComEd communities in Chicago and across northern Illinois.

Air pollution is a common issue in big cities like Chicago because of high volumes of traffic traveling in and out of the city. Not to mention the pollution caused from factories and waste that are produced. This plan, informed by a broad range of stakeholders over the past several months, would deliver significant air quality improvements over the next several years and would improve the quality of life for communities most adversely impacted by air pollution.

Additionally, ComEd’s BE plan would complement and accelerate federal and state initiatives aimed at improving EV adoption, including the State of Illinois’ recently enacted Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA), which includes strategies to lower carbon emissions and enhance the quality of air, including a goal of putting 1 million EVs on the road in Illinois by 2030.

With all of the advancements and efforts that the State of Illinois is making, and with the support of companies like ComEd Illinois, Illinois is looking to become a lot eco-friendlier. Cities like Chicago are shaping up to be a lot more greener for generations to come!

The remote language service offers up to 200 languages. The website’s homepage will feature a tab with a translator icon on the top right corner labeled Need Language Service that users can click to access the service. Once a user selects a language, they can type their question in their native language and receive assistance in that language.

FOSTER, OBERNOLTE BIPARTISAN DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY ACCOUNTABILITY BILL PASSES HOUSE

The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation introduced by Chairman Bill Foster (D-IL) and Ranking Member Jay Obernolte (R-CA) of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee Subcommittee on Investigations and Oversight. The bipartisan Cost-Share Accountability Act of 2022 would bolster the Department of Energy’s accountability to Congress and the public when awarding funding grants.

While most Department of Energy projects require cost-sharing by their grant recipients, these requirements can be reduced or even eliminated in certain instances. This legislation would increase accountability by requiring the department to make public and submit to Congress quarterly reports on the use of its authority to modify or bypass the statutory cost-sharing requirement.

“For Congress to fulfill our oversight responsibilities, we must be able to access information on how our departments and agencies are operating,” said Foster. “Cost-sharing requirements help protect the use of federal funds at the Department of Energy. As the department continues their next-generation research and development, it’s critical Congress understands how cost-sharing is implemented in support of their projects.”

Chicago Riverwalk 2022 Summer Season Announced CHICAGO — Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) spotlight a slate of engaging summer arts and recreational programming taking place on the Chicago Riverwalk, a magnificent urban space located on the south bank of the Chicago River. The award-winning, pedestrian-friendly Chicago Riverwalk stretches 1.25 miles from Lake Michigan to Lake Street offering restaurants, wineries and bars, live music and performances, public art, urban recreation and more.

Programming on the Chicago Riverwalk is presented by the City of Chicago and produced by DCASE in collaboration with the Department of Assets and Information (AIS), the Chicago Park District and cultural partners from around the city. Art on theMART, the largest digital art projection in the world, covering over 2.5 acres of theMART’s river-facing façade, announced new installations inspired by the city’s Year of Chicago Dance to be showcased throughout the summer. Also celebrating the Year of Chicago Dance, Links Hall presents Dance on the Walk showcasing the city’s dynamic dance scene with free performances plus pre-show classes for all skill levels.

Sounds of the Riverwalk is returning for its second year and will expand to a 12-week music series featuring musicians from the Chicago Band Roster. The free, public performances will start June 19 and run through early October. Who would have expected the movies to be right in predicting the future? We have drones delivering packages, trains that practically fly, and cars that can drive themselves. Electric vehicles are one of the technological advancements that were also predicted in fiction. However, the features these cars have are things not usually seen in films, television, or books.

Electric cars have always been viewed as luxury cars. The negative connotation behind luxury is that it is expensive.

However, Chevy has been doing work to create electric vehicles that the average person can afford while also encompassing futuristic features that are found in luxury vehicles.

Chevy’s Bolt (EUV) electric utility vehicle is an amazingly crafted electric vehicle. With a sleek outer body and a luxurious feel inside and out, it comes in seven different stylish colors.

The Bolt EUV, like all of Chevy’s electric cars, while being luxurious, is still very affordable. This comes as a surprise, seeing how many cool features the car has.

I had the opportunity to experience the many features of the Chevy’s EUV Bolt for a week. I can say this car is amazing.

Aside from already being cool because

it is an electric vehicle, it runs smooth. The car I usually drive is so loud that I can hear nearly everything under the hood. With the EUV Bolt, I hear absolutely nothing. A pen could drop on the carpet of the car, and I’d hear it.

Not to mention a host great features; the car has 200 horsepower and wireless phone compatibility. The stand-out feature for me is the EUV Bolt’s super cruise feature. The Super cruise feature is an advanced driver assistance technology that allows drivers to drive hands-free. It is a feature that you would not expect in such an affordable car.

The Super cruise feature uses advanced technology to not only drive the EUV Bolt but do it safely across 200,000 compatible roads in the United States. Super cruise uses Connected Services * and uses real-time precise positioning cameras, sensors, and LiDAR map data to help detect curves, helping to make long drives and commutes comfortable.

The Super cruise has a sub-feature called adaptive cruise control. Adaptive cruise control uses state-of-the-art technology to automatically maintain a driver-selected distance from the detected vehicle you’re following.

Another amazing thing about Super cruise is that it is very easy to use. First, engage the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

by using the steering wheel button. When Adaptive Cruise Control is already set, the symbol on the dashboard will be green with a speed shown.

Another sub-feature of Super cruise is the Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking. This feature is a safeguard for when other drivers are not being responsible. The Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking uses radar to help you avoid or reduce the severity of a front-end collision.

The Super cruise also has lane centering.

The Lane-Centering Detection features detects curves with real-time cameras, sensors, and GPS. When Super Cruise detects you are on a compatible road, paying sufficient attention, and all other driving conditions are met, then a white Super Cruise symbol will display on the dashboard.

When it is safe to do so, press the Super Cruise button on the steering wheel to engage the feature. Once the steering wheel light bar turns green, you may remove your hands from the steering wheel.

To turn off Super Cruise, press the Super Cruise button again, press the brake pedal or pull the Regen on Demand paddle.

ENA Lantern Award Shines Spotlight on Incredible Work of 29 Emergency Departments SCHAUMBURG, Ill., PRNewswire -- On Wednesday, July 13, the Emergency Nurses Association announced 29 emergency departments being honored with the prestigious ENA Lantern Award – the only award dedicated to showcasing EDs for their outstanding work.

New Black-focused Social Prescribing Project aims to improve health in Black communities TORONTO, CNW - The Black Health Committee, a committee of the Alliance for Healthier Communities in Ontario, is launching a new Black-focused Social Prescribing Project. The project will take a holistic approach to improve the health of people in Black communities.

In Canada and in Ontario, anti-Black racism is entrenched in societal systems and structures and impacts access for millions of Black people to education, housing, employment, healthcare and other resources.

The COVID-19 pandemic amplified existing disparities for Black communities; those impacts have been disproportionately felt by Black and racialized communities. A July 2020 study found that Black and racialized people make up 83% of COVID-19 cases reported in Ontario.

Social prescribing is an approach to healthcare that can bridge gaps between social and clinical models of health.

Using the trusted process of writing a prescription, social prescribing allows health providers to refer patients to

community-based programs that are co-created according to each client’s interests, goals, and gifts. In Ontario, Community Health Centres (CHCs) and other community-based primary health care organizations offer inter-professional and community services as part of their models of care, as they have for decades.

The goal of the Black Social Prescribing project is to develop a model of social prescribing grounded in Black and Afrocentric values and principles, and an approach that focuses on supporting Black families and children in Ontario.

“As a Community Health Centre focused on improving the health and wellbeing of Black communities in the Greater Toronto Area, we are excited to participate in the Black Social Prescribing Project as an essential model of integrated service that will be culturally affirming and based on the lived experiences of Black communities for improving their health and wellbeing,” said Liben Gebremikael, Executive Director at TAIBU Community Health Centre, who also

serves as Chair of the Board of the Alliance for Healthier Communities.

The majority of CHCs involved in the project are Black-led and offer clinical services, physiotherapy, counselling, mental health and addictions support, diabetes management and more. Through these community-governed primary health care organizations and their providers, the Black Social Prescribing project aims to address social determinants of health, such as food security, income security, education and social connections.

The Alliance for Healthier Communities previously piloted social prescribing initiatives across 11 community health centres in Ontario, representing a diversity of urban, rural, northern, and francophone communities. The results were very promising, with clients reporting 49% decrease in sense of loneliness, 19% increase in involvement in social activities, 12% increase in self-reported sense of mental health, and increased sense of belonging.

The Black Social Prescribing Project, which is funded by the Balsam Foundation, will be implemented over the next two and a half years in four CHCs: Somerset West CHC in Ottawa, as well as Rexdale CHC, TAIBU CHC and Black Creek CHC, all located in Toronto.

Recipe courtesy of the North Carolina SweetPotato Commission Servings: 4 2 North Carolina sweetpotatoes 1/2 head purple cabbage 1 tablespoon olive oil salt, to taste pepper, to taste 6 tablespoons poppyseed dressing, divided 1 tablespoon chopped parsley 2 cups grape tomatoes, halved 3 tablespoons feta cheese, crumbled Preheat grill to 400 F. Scrub and wash sweetpotatoes. Cut each into six wedges. (If sweetpotatoes are long, consider cutting wedges in half.) Parboil sweetpotatoes 5 minutes, drain and cool 5 minutes.

Shred cabbage into thin slices.

Toss sweetpotatoes with olive oil and salt and pepper, to taste.

Place sweetpotato wedges on grill perpendicular to grates over direct heat; grill about 3 minutes on each side, or until tender-crisp with grill marks on each side. Remove from grill and set aside.

In zip-top bag or large bowl, toss cabbage with 4 tablespoons poppyseed dressing until coated. Add parsley and tomatoes; toss.

To serve, place sweetpotato wedges on bed of dressed cabbage and drizzle with remaining poppyseed dressing then sprinkle with cheese.

Serve warm or cold.
