WINDY INDIE IS TAKING THE WINDY CITY

When she picks up her violin, Chicago-based violinist Windy Indie can move people of all demographics. Her electrifying covers and original live music transcends multiple genres entertaining crowds from music festivals to weddings and RSVP events. Chicago’s own Windy Indie was born and raised on Chicago’s West Side. She’s continuing to evolve and bring live music to the masses in as many forms as possible.

Windy Indie is a remarkable violinist, offering music services for weddings, violin lessons for households, and recording sessions with regional talent. She is taking her multi-talented offerings and combining them to become one of the most versatile artists in the local music scene. She has performed for nationally recognized companies and celebrities and has even appeared on the FOX network’s hit TV series “Empire” three times.

Windy Indie has plans to release a Chicago House Music Inspired single early this Fall titled ‘Chicago Groove.’ Drawing upon her upbringing in the city that created House Music, Windy aims to not only use her music to tell a story but to bring people together.

Windy Indie is a classically trained violinist from the West Side of Chicago whose versatility on the violin is rooted in her humble beginnings. Since picking the violin as her principal instrument in her 6th-grade music class, she has become passionate about music and encouraging others to believe in themselves.

Since 2004, she has performed in many youth classical orchestras in Chicago. She demonstrated talent and leadership skills and worked her way up to become an active section leader of the 2nd violins during her last two years at Lane Technical College Prep High School in 2011.

While simultaneously participating in the All-City CPS High School Orchestra for three years, Windy Indie earned the chance to perform at The Chicago Orchestra Hall, Navy Pier, and many private venues. In addition, as a past mentee to the late Robert Fisher, she was a part of a youth classical quartet (SEED) for two years governed by him (a member of Chicago’s Sinfonietta Orchestra).

Now focusing on the fusion genre of Classical and Hip-Hop, Windy has continued her education in Chicago’s City College Music Education programs. With sounds reminiscent of the local Chicago hip-hop scene and the city’s classical influences, Windy Indie developed an aspiration to bridge the gap between music and education as a tool to inspire people of all demographics to follow their dreams.

‘Sunset 1919’ memorializes the lives lost during the 1919 Race Riots Continued from page 1

It led to riots where 1,000 Black families lost their homes when they were torched by people rioting, and 23 Black people were killed.

J. Nicole Brooks created “Sunset 1919” a community ritual to commemorate the murder of Williams and the other lives lost during what would be referred to as the Chicago Race Riots of 1919, which happened from July 27th to August 3rd. It was part of the Red Summer of 1919, where race riots broke out in Washington, D.C., Omaha, Neb., Longview, Texas, Arkansas and Knoxville, Tenn.

“Sunset 1919” will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 27th, at the Eugene Williams Memorial Marker. Spoken Word Artist avery r. young, Mover and Choreographer Cristal Sabbagh and Musician and Composer Edward Wilkerson Jr. are the featured artists.

During the Summer of 2020, Brooks was talking to artist friends trying to figure out how they could contribute, mourn and celebrate a time when there were social uprisings and civil unrest as a result of the deaths of unarmed Black people.

Brooks was spending time with a good friend who is an ensemble member of Lookingglass Theatre. They both love music.

They were expressing that Chicago has such a long history of not acknowledging hurtful things.

“We learn about these great tragedies, like we learn about the Great Chicago Fire, we learn about the Columbian Exposition.

There are all of these things we learn about, but somehow, at least when I was coming up, we didn’t learn about the Race Riots that happened here in 1919,” Brooks said.

Brooks wanted to make a short film since they couldn’t

gather people at 35th Street Beach, which is an approximation of the marker where Eugene Williams was killed.

“We wanted to beat back the evil spirits. Each year, we’ve been building on it. It’s a ritual that is open to everyone to come, hopefully learn more about the 1919 Race Riots, to lay a flower at the memorial marker that honors Eugene Williams, if they so wish, and just to spend time together,” they said.

The first in-person event took place in 2021. Brooks has been able to get artists to sign-on to the project every year. They have been a fan of avery r. young’s work for some time. The first year, artist Ben LaMar Gay was part of the event. The goal is to uplift Chicago talent.

Brooks said being at the Eugene Williams Memorial Marker in person in 2021 was very emotional in the most beautiful way.

They added, “It’s haunted, but it’s also like, the spirit of wanting to release and to dance, it’s so good. That’s a part of it. Yes, we are there to remember this horrible event, but we’re also there to celebrate our bodies and space. It’s about the freedom to exist.”

In order to heal, Brooks believes it is essential to know what happened in the past and to not ignore it. Acknowledging it creates a path to moving forward. Also, to realize there weren’t just one or two bad periods in history. There are incidents that took place throughout history where Black people were harmed, tortured and killed.

“The more you know, the better off we’ll all be. This is not just knowledge only Black people need to know. We are fighting back against White Supremacy. So really, white people have to do their diligence. They have to know about it and deal with it,” said Brooks.

HOOPS IN THE HOOD ANNOUNCES 2022 SUMMER SEASON CHICAGO—The Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) Chicago today announced the launch of the 16th annual Hoops in the Hood 2022 season. Sponsored by State Farm® and Walmart, Hoops in the Hood is a sports-based community summer safety initiative that creates safe spaces for youth in 17 Chicago communities to interact and build positive relationships through basketball.

For 16 years, community organizations across Chicago have united through basketball to empower residents to reclaim their streets and promote peace. Each year, hundreds of young athletes ages 8 - 19 play in the summer-long leagues that blend street basketball with other recreational activities designed to develop youth leadership skills and teamwork while fostering civic engagement and community building. This summer also marks the launch of the first-ever all-girls’ league program to be a part of Hoops in the Hood. Hosted by The ARK of St. Sabina, the all-girls’ league tipped off July 9 and will run through August 20. With its message of community building and promoting neighborhood safety, on Saturday, July 30, an all-girls team will play officers from the Chicago Police Depart-

ment’s 6th District at 1 p.m. outside St. Sabina on Halsted. More than 30 all-girls teams are participating from across Chicago in the elementary and high school league. The league is focused on basketball competition, leadership development and social empowerment, and engagement with law enforcement.

JOYCE TO HOST FREE DOCUMENT SHRED DAY IN SOUTH CHICAGO HEIGHTS

State Senator Patrick Joyce is hosting a shred event in the community for residents to discard documents with personal information. This event will allow community members an opportunity to safely dispose of important documents that may contain sensitive information.

The free shred event will occur on Thursday, August 4 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the South Chicago Heights Senior Center parking lot, located at 3317 Chicago Road, South Chicago Heights, IL. The event is free to all residents, though each car is limited to three boxes of documents. It will last until 1 p.m. or until all shred trucks are full.

“It is very important to take care of sensitive and personal documents in the right way to prevent identity theft,” said Joyce (D-Essex). “In order to keep information like this confidential to yourself and your family, I encourage this shred event to be taken advantage of, as it will protect all of your private information and give you the opportunity to eliminate the buildup of these documents in your homes.”

LIGHTFORD ANNOUNCES LOCAL EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS TO COLLECTIVELY RECEIVE OVER $400,000 IN MAINTENANCE GRANTS

A continued champion of prioritizing the educational needs of students, Senate Majority Leader Kimberly A. Lightford (D-Maywood) announces that a number of selected local school districts will be receiving a maintenance grant up to $50,000 for infrastructure improvements.

“If we really want to set our students up for success, we have to ensure that their learning environments are safe and up to date in order to promote academic growth and eliminate unnecessary distractions,” said Lightford.

A total of $30 million in 2022 School Maintenance Grants was distributed to districts across the state. To be eligible for the grants, applicants were required to match the state funds and commit to completing proposed projects within two years. ILLINOIS TOLLWAY SHARPENS FOCUS ON TECHNOLOGY INVESTMENTS, HIRES CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER DOWNERS GROVE, IL – In the wake of an industry-wide shift to cashless tolling, accelerated by the worldwide pandemic, the Illinois Tollway’s leaders are doubling down on efforts to support the agency’s diverse technology needs. The Tollway today added the first Tollway Chief Information Officer as it looks to consolidate, realign and invest in its IT workforce.

“Since joining the Tollway, I’ve quickly learned that the Tollway’s business technology efforts are recognized throughout the industry; and our goal is to keep it that way,” said Board Chair Dorothy Abreu. “At this time, it’s critical we provide the leadership, focus, and resources to ensure these efforts meet our current needs and position us favorably moving forward.”

Poised to lead these efforts is Michael Shay, a 22year veteran of Will County government with experience providing support to all aspects of the county’s 2,300 employees. Previously, he served as the Information & Communications Technology Director, a role included leading a 25-member team in support for all aspects of county government, including law enforcement, the judicial system, and county services, as well as the its real estate and financial systems. He also served as the chair of the Will County Emergency Telephone Systems Board which manages the technology needs of three 911 call centers.

“As the Tollway looks forward, Mike Shay’s charge will be not only be meeting the Tollway’s internal and immediate needs, but also to leverage his experience within the industry to garner external support and attention for the agency’s technology efforts,” Chair Abreu said. “Mike’s ability to envision, and subsequently craft,

2 cups uncooked rotini pasta 1/2 cup prepared pesto 1can (15 ounces) READ 3 Bean Salad, drained 1 cup grape or cherry tomatoes, halved 3/4 cup fresh mozzarella bocconcini, cut in halves or quarters 1/4 cup toasted walnuts (optional) 1/4 cup (1 ounce) shredded fresh Parmesan cheese

Black Beans: 1 can (15 ounces) black beans, drained and rinsed 3 tablespoons water 1 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1 pinch salt

Cook pasta according to package directions; drain and rinse under cold running water. In bowl, combine pesto with pasta to coat well.

Combine pasta with drained bean salad. Stir in tomatoes and mozzarella; refrigerate.

To serve, sprinkle walnuts and Parmesan cheese over top.

Substitution: 3/4 cup mozzarella may be substituted for bocconcini.

To make quick pickled red onions: In small pot over medium-low heat, heat reserved pickling liquid. Once simmering, add sliced red onion and cook 3 minutes.

To make avocado sauce: In food processor or blender, pulse avocados, lime juice, salt and garlic powder until smooth.

Assemble tacos by filling tortillas with sliced beets, black beans, pickled red onions, avocado sauce and cilantro, if desired.
