DURBIN HONORS JUSTICE JOHN PAUL STEVENS ON SENATE FLOOR In a speech on the Senate floor, U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, recently honored the life of Justice John Paul Stevens who passed away on July 16 at the age of 99. Justice Stevens served on the Supreme Court for nearly 35 years.

Justice Stevens was born and raised in Chicago. He attended the University of Chicago and Northwestern Law School, where he graduated at the top of his class. In between, he served as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star. He practiced law in Chicago and served on the Chicago-based U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit prior to his 1975 appointment to the Supreme Court, according to a press release.

Community Organizers Call For A Witness Protection Program In Chicago Continued from page 1

Several community leaders recently gathered in front of the University of Chicago Emergency Department and Trauma Center to hold a press conference about possible solutions to the violence in Chicago. During the press conference, the organizers announced the launch of The Solution Starts With Us which is an accountability and anti-violence initiative.

The core goal of this new initiative is to empower residents of Chicago’s most at-risk communities to create an action plan that will reduce violence in their communities and allow them to hold the City accountable for the role that they play in keeping communities safe.

So far, two anti-violence town hall meetings have been held as a result of The Solution Starts With Us initiative, one on the west side and one on the south side. The meetings were open to the public and allowed residents to share what they believed would make a difference in reducing violence in their communities. Those

thoughts and ideas will be used to create an accountability plan for Chicago and once the plan is complete it will be made public for communities across the city to implement.

“The only solution to gun violence in our communities is going to come from the community members themselves,” said Ja’Mal Green, community activist. “ The real change will come from us and the solution starts with us. That is the new campaign that we are unleashing. We are saying that we need community members all over the city to join with us and craft the plan to hold leadership accountable in our city.”

During the press conference, Green and Father Micheal Pfleger, senior pastor at The Faith Community of Saint Sabina, called on the Mayor of Chicago to immediately create a witness protection and incentive program that would encourage people to come forward with information about violent crimes and protect them from witness intimidation.

The proposed witness protection program would offer Chicago Housing Authority vouchers for those who are willing to testify in

cases of violent crimes and provide a financial incentive for those who come forward with information or evidence that leads to an arrest, according to information provided at the press conference.

“There is never just one person that sees somebody shoot somebody, there are a group of people that see it. If one person comes forward, they will be a target but if 20 people come forward there is no target. When the whole community decides enough is enough and they are going to speak up there is no target anymore. It’s when numbers stand forward together and the whole block speaks, that’s when things change,” said Pfleger.

The witness protection program is a short term plan to get killers off the street, according to Green, who went on to say that the only long term solution to the violence in Chicago is “investment into the community like programs for ex-felons and programs for mental health.”

For the third summer in a row, local entrepreneurs are setting up shop in brightly colored shipping containers at the corner of 51st Street and South Calumet Avenue.

This unique community market in Bronzeville, known as Boxville, brings a wealth of opportunities to the community and provides a platform for entrepreneurs and creative individuals to showcase their ideas.

During their weekly Market Days, every Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m., Boxville is filled to the brim with local vendors and residents but one business, in particular, has taken it upon themselves to become a pioneer at Boxville and keep their shipping container open to the public six days a week.

Be Creative, open Tuesday through Sunday, is a one-stopshop for graphic design and screen printing needs with the entire business operating out of the Makers Box at Boxville.

To put it simply, Be Creative co-founders, Eddie White and Will Jamison, can screen print just about anything on the spot, six days a week, in the Makers Box. Even more than that though, they are offering their creative minds to the public and helping clients bring their branding ideas to life through one-

While both White and Jamison acknowledged that they would be doing this work with or without Boxville because it is their passion, they also realize that Boxville is more than just a community market and feel lucky to have space in the shipping container mall.

“Boxville is pretty important to us because we truly have an opportunity to be a pioneer. Nobody technically knows what it looks like to operate a business out of a

box and someone’s got to take that chance and we’ve gladly accepted that challenge,” said Jamison. “We want to help grow this neighborhood because there is a lot of rich and healthy heritage and history here that even I don’t know too much about it but I can feel it.”

Be Creative is open Tuesday through Sunday for those who are interested in having t-shirts, hats, bags, table clothes, or anything else screen printed. The team also can help create flyers, business cards,

programs, and do start to finish design work for clients who are still struggling to get their ideas organized. Any idea a person might have, Be Creative can help bring it to life.

“There are no limits here. We don’t allow it,” said White. “We’re genuinely here to help and we will talk to you and love you and care about you. All of this has a deeper meaning than just making a graphic or printing up a t-shirt.

We care about these people and we wouldn’t be here if we didn’t.”

MSI’s Wearable Technology Exhibit Will Feature Boeing’s Revolutionary New Spacesuit, Prototype Material For Limited Time As part of its Wired to WearTM exhibit – the first-ever exhibit dedicated to the future of wearable technology – the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago (MSI) is giving guests a look at Boeing’s pioneering new Starliner spacesuit. Additionally, MSI guests can also see the groundbreaking new material Boeing and University of North Dakota researchers are working on to perfect with the intention to lengthen astronauts’ time on the lunar surface. These items will be on display through July 31 in exhibit’s Latest Lab, which is dedicated to showcasing the newest wearable prototypes across industries.

“Wired to Wear is a celebration of cutting-edge technologies that will revolutionize how we live. As the world celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission’s Moon landing and prepares to return to the lunar surface, we are thrilled to add something as iconic as a next-generation spacesuit to the exhibit,” said Kathleen McCarthy, MSI’s head curator and director of Collections. “We are so grateful to Boeing, a longtime Museum partner, for their help as we showcase how our clothing will make us smarter, faster and stronger in the near future.”

CST-100 Starliner Suit The Starliner spacesuit, which will be tested in flight later this year, borrows from historic designs but leverages advanced materials and new joint patterns to allow for lighter weight, enhanced flexibility and greater temperature control for astronauts. Components include: l Touchscreen-sensitive gloves and integrated shoes, similar to cross-trainers l Strategically located zippers that shifts the suit’s shape based on whether the wearer is sitting or standing l A soft helmet and visor incorporated into the suit rather than the previous bulky, detachable iterations The suit will be the official suit for Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner spacecraft, which provides all elements needed to transport crew and cargo to and from low-Earth orbit destinations, including: l Crew training and mission planning l Spacecraft and launch vehicle assembly l Integration and testing l Crew and cargo recovery Boeing is working toward two Starliner flights in 2019, the first without a crew and the second with Boeing astronaut Chris Ferguson, and NASA astronauts Nicole Mann and Mike Fincke, on board.

A Glimpse into Space Innovation Wired to Wear’s Latest Lab will also feature samples of groundbreaking new material by Boeing engineer Dr. Kavya K. Manyapu, acclaimed space scientist and member of the U.N. Space Generation Advisory Council.

The material, which is being tested aboard the International Space Station, weaves carbon nanotubes and other conductive materials into spacesuit fabric to combat lunar dust, which is sharp enough to tear through space suits and poses a serious risk to astronaut health due its chemical makeup. Dr. Manyapu’s material runs an electric current through the nanotubes that pushes the dust off of the suit, helping protect astronaut health, mitigate dust contamination and allowing less wear-and-tear on planetary spacesuits.

Wired to Wear is presented by BMO and will be at MSI through May 2020. The experience is not included in Museum Entry and requires an additional timed-entry ticket, $12 for adults and seniors, and $9 for children ages 3-11.

Transformative 5G Technology Arrives

The next wave of technological evolution has arrived in the form of 5G, a new generation of mobile networks where at least four major telephone carriers in America – AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint – have put forth plans to introduce this year.

Reportedly, AT&T has even started trials with 5G mobile hotspots in 12 cities.

“The first generation was all about being able to just talk on the phone where ever you were,” said Candice Brackeen, the co-founder and executive director of Hillman Accelerator, which supports women and minority led tech companies in Cincinnati to provide them with access to education, seed funding, mentorship, and networks.

“And then we had 2G that allowed us to use a little bit of text messaging.

Then, 3G was faster, we had the smartphone and suddenly everybody had it in their hand,” Brackeen said.

“Then, we had 4G and now, the fifth generation is super-fast and responding in real time and we now have the ability to have devices speaking to each other,” she said.

The technological advances are transformative and can significantly change what it means to be connected, Brackeen said.

She noted that it can transform communities and also reshape the digital economy.

Experts said when compared to 4G, 5G means far faster downloads, significantly reduced response times, and a massive impact on how everyone lives, works, and plays.

“So, the internet is now going to work the way we all want it to work in a mobile version,” Brackeen said.

“That’s kind of where we’re going. The ability for your car to really understand what’s happening as we all aspire to have self-driving cars … those cars now will be able to interact with those around them and make real decisions,” she said.

The importance of providing African Americans and others with information on 5G was underscored in June when Washington Informer Publisher Denise Rolark Barnes hosted a news forum without any grant or funding.

Rolark Barnes said the said she held the forum because “this issue is important” and residents across the city, especially in the predominately African American communities that lie east of the Anacostia River, needed the information.

The early reviews for 5G include CNET’s description: “On its surface, 5G is about astounding speeds and almost zero latency – the lag time between when your phone pings the network and when it responds. But on a global scale, it represents political dominance and economic might.”

Earlier this year, Samsung’s first 5G smartphone in the U.S. became available exclusively on Verizon for a limited time.

According to a news release, Verizon revealed the names of 20 cities that join Chicago and Minneapolis where customers will get access to its 5G Ultra-Wideband network this year, with more to come throughout 2019.

Those cities, which include Washington, D.C.; Charlotte; Boston; Atlanta; Cincinnati; Cleveland; Columbus, Ohio; Des Moines, Iowa; Denver; Detroit; Houston; Indianapolis; Kansas City; Little Rock, Arkansas; Memphis; Phoenix; Providence, Rhode Island; San Diego; and Salt Lake City; are the world’s first to get Verizon’s 5G Ultra-Wideband mobility service.

The bottom line is that everyone should be excited about 5G, Brackeen said.

“I’ve got children. And for me, when the internet is slow, sometimes I don’t have happy children in the house when the internet is slow – we’re not learning, homework doesn’t get done,” Brackeen said.

“So we can all be excited about reliability. And I know that I just upgraded my house within the last 60 days to 5G. And, you know, the video games work faster. My streaming services work faster. And I’m not having any downtime,” Brackeen said.

“I can work from home versus working from my office where there is fiber. And so the reliability is what I think is what we should all be excited about. I think that’s what we should be most excited about is the reliability,” she said.

Now, what do you do with the items you removed? #1 - Sell online. I average $100+ a month in online sales of items I simply don’t want anymore. #2 - Sell online. I’m clearly a big fan of this.

However, if you are 1 size, (just 1 size) away from getting back into a size, develop a strategy to get back into them, but keep them out of your closet until then. #3 – Recycle as a dust cloth. #4 - Find a better home within your home. #5 - Be thrilled to see your clothes!

CALENDAR Black Enterprise Is Bringing Black Men XCEL To Miami Aug. 28-Sept. 1

27th Annual Antique Tool Show and Sale Sunday, August 4, 2019 9AM – 1PM Members of the Early American Industries Association (EAIA) and the Mid-West Tools Collectors Association (M-WTCA) will be holding their annual Antique Tool Show and Sale at the Garfield Farm Museum on Sunday, August 4th from 9am – 1pm. This is the only joint show by these two organizations in the mid-west open to the public. Typically, over 30 different collectors will have their tools on display and for sale.

Garfield Farm & Inn Museum looks at the settlement era of northern Illinois, that was a time traditions arose around the seasonal cycle of farming. In that spirit, Garfield Farm’s calendar of events has created its own traditions that are approaching nearly 30 years or more in age.

The Antique Tool Show is just such an annual tradition paying tribute every first Sunday in August to the craftsmanship and inventiveness of Americans since the 1700s. These collectors value and marvel at the simple hand tools many whose design endured for centuries.

Garfield Farm Museum established this annual show to help educate the public with the realities of America’s founding. Hand tools were what built and shaped America. In the 1840s as factories arose, handcrafted items became massed produced but not in the way mass production is envisioned today. The hand tools that individual craftsmen used simply transitioned to the early factories. Waterpower might have made it possible for a number of lathes to be powered at once but hand tools were used to make any turnings. Blacksmiths were becoming old school in the mid-19th century, as the profession of mechanic became the high tech of its day. Mechanics for the steam age to manufacture as well as maintain locomotives and lake and ocean going steamers needed even more specialized hand tools to produce the precision needed.

Tool and die makers became the top hand tool workers of the 19th and early 20th century.

Members of the Early American Industries Association (EAIA) and the Mid-West Tools Collectors Association (M-WTCA) will be holding their annual Antique Tool Show and Sale at the Garfield Farm Museum on Sunday, August 4th from 9am – 1pm.

Their inventiveness and skills would create the power tools that society depends upon today. Appropriately, some of the most avid collectors one can meet at the Antique Tool Show are retired highly skilled tool and die makers. Many are the last generation to use hand tools and the first to use computerized machines to make the complex machines of mass production today.

Yet fine craftsmanship has not disappeared as thousands of hobbyists that enjoy working with wood, avidly seek out antique tools. Such tools that might be made of higher quality materials than what can be found on the market today or are no longer made but are still needed to reproduce certain designs or affects in furniture. The Antique Tool Show is thus an opportunity to talk with such experienced individuals who might have worked with the type of tool one purchases.

The public is invited to bring a tool they cannot identify as many of the collectors will know the answer. This is the only joint meeting in Illinois of the EAIA and M-WTCA that the public is invited to attend.

Opportunities at the show to become a member of the organizations will give access to their regional and national meetings.
