briefly CHICAGO HOSPITALITY & BUSINESS LEADERS RALLY TO REIGNITE TRAVEL TO CITY AND REGION CHICAGO – The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) joined hospitality and business leaders from Choose Chicago, the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, the Illinois Hotel & Lodging Association, Oxford Hotels and Resorts and LondonHouse Chicago on Wednesday, July 13, to discuss reigniting travel and tourism to the Chicago area.

Due to pandemic-related travel reductions in 2020 and 2021, Illinois and Chicago hotels lost more than $5.4 billion in room revenue, resulting in a drop of more than $1 billion in state and local tax revenue.

Travel is booming this summer, however, with nearly seven in ten Americans (69%) planning to travel this summer and 60% saying they are likely to take more vacations this year compared to 2020-21, according to a recent survey conducted by Morning Consult and commissioned by AHLA. Another national survey shows that 77% of business travelers say it is more important than ever to bring back business travel. The same survey showed nearly two-thirds of business travelers said increased reliance on virtual work during the pandemic negatively impacted both productivity (64%) and workplace culture (65%).

Speakers at the event discussed recent data and opinion research underscoring optimism for reigniting travel to the Chicago region as well as new travel trends and opportunities to attract more travelers to the area.

The Wednesday, July 13, event is one in a series of “Reigniting Travel” events AHLA is hosting in major cities across the nation in conjunction with its Hospitality is Working campaign.

GOVERNOR PRITZKER APPOINTS HEALTH POLICY EXPERT DR. SAMEER VOHRA TO LEAD ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH SPRINGFIELD — Governor JB Pritzker has appointed Dr. Sameer Vohra, a distinguished pediatrician and healthcare policy expert, to lead the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) beginning August 1. Dr. Vohra, the Founding Chair of the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine’s (SIU-SOM) Department of Population Science and Policy, follows Dr. Ngozi Ezike, who stepped down in March after leading IDPH and the State of Illinois through the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Vohra is a general pediatrician who holds degrees in law and public policy. He is a cross-disciplinary leader in state and national health policy formulation, and his recent focus has been on improving health outcomes in Central and Southern Illinois. An Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Public Health, Medical Humanities, and Law at SIU-SOM, he currently serves the State of Illinois as the Interim Chair of the Children’s Mental Health Partnership.

He completed a residency in pediatrics at the University of Chicago and earned a Master of Arts in public policy from the University of Chicago. He holds a medical doctorate from SIU-SOM; a juris doctorate from SIU School of Law graduating first in his class; and a Bachelor of Arts in political science and science in human culture with honors from Northwestern University.

Dr. Vohra also serves on IDPH’s Illinois State Board of Health, the Illinois Medicaid Advisory Committee, the Governor’s Rural Affairs Council, and recently completed a term on the Illinois COVID-19 Response Fund Steering Committee. He has previously served on national committees for the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Association of American Medical Colleges, and the American Medical Association, and on the Board of Trustees for the Illinois State Medical Society and Chicago Medical Society.

Local Lunchbox Chicago feeds children during summer months Continued from page 1

On Thursday, July 7th, the Obama Foundation hosted an event at Overton Elementary School to celebrate the launch of the Local Lunchbox Chicago pilot program. During this summer, more than 100,000 meals will be served with the program. Local Lunchbox Chicago launched a few weeks ago and 10,000 meals had been served before the community launch.

The goal of Local Lunchbox Chicago is to leverage the money the USDA already provides for organizations that feed children during the summer, with foods they prefer, taste wise and culturally, keeping in mind food allergies and nutrition. The aim is to ensure children lead healthy lives.

The Obama Foundation has been in the community on the ground for years, building relationships and having conversations, as well as listening.

Michael Strautmanis, Executive Vice President for External Affairs for the Obama Foundation, said there was a conversation between the Obama Foundation and the Shah Family Foundation to see if it was something that could be done in Chicago. One of the pillars of the effort with the impact the Obama Foundation wants to have in Chicago is built around healthy communities.

“This is the kind of programming you’re going to see when the Obama Presidential Center opens a few years from today. Obviously, we can’t wait until then to get the work done. We wanted to get started right away,” Strautmanis said.

President Barack Obama has always believed that change starts in communities. When trying to solve a challenge like young people needing food in the summer, that has to start in the neighborhood.

When Overton Elementary School closed, the community stepped up and turned it into a community center. The Obama Foundation also is working with Emerald South to create economic opportunities for people in the neighborhood, leveraging the investment of the Obama Center.

“When we knew there was this opportunity to feed children that needed food, and support their families in that way, we had to find a way to get it done,” Strautmanis said.

Gary Comer Youth Center, After School Matters and YMCA partnered with the Obama Foundation for Lunchbox Chicago. The emphasis on culturally relevant foods is for young people to eat delicious, fresh, healthy food.

Dorri McWhorter, President and CEO of YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago, said the YMCA has 30,000 children enrolled in summer camp and some of those children might not have access to high quality food. Partnering with the Obama Foundation and Local Lunchbox Chicago would allow the YMCA to upgrade the quality of the meals the campers receive; ensure they are getting healthy and nutritious meals and help support community vendors.

Campers from the YMCA attended the event on July 7th and were able to sample the food prepared by local vendors. McWhorter was glad the campers were able to have the experience and participate.

“One, they get to experience this delicious food. Then, they also get to recognize how important that investment is that we’re making in them, in terms of making sure they have this access to food,” McWhorter said.

Jill Shah, Founder and President of the Shah Family Foundation, said the organization wanted to partner with the Obama Foundation because the Obamas are leaders when it comes to health and wellness. Shah acknowledged the impact Local Lunchbox Chicago has made already, in just a few weeks of launching.

“You can take every USDA dollar that flows into summer feeding and into school feeding, and you can optimize it around these things. Children can have things that are cooked around the corner, by people who know you, know your community and are served to you by people who love you. It’s an entirely different impact for the same dollar,” Shah said.

CHICAGO – ComEd has announced the launch of three new studies to better understand the technical and community challenges and opportunities presented by the clean energy transition envisioned by the newly enacted Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA).

“CEJA provides a roadmap to an equitable clean energy future for Illinois.

The state’s utilities must now plan and execute the investments that will enable the rapid growth of renewables and electric vehicles, ensure the grid’s resilience to more extreme weather caused by climate change, and balance the need to keep electric bills affordable,” said ComEd CEO Gil Quiniones.

“This transformation will offer tremendous economic, environmental and public health benefits, and these studies will help us design our grid plans to ensure that every community benefits.”

These studies complement the comprehensive Climate Risk and Adaptation Study announced last week by ComEd and the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory’s Center for Climate Resilience and Decision Science. The findings will inform ComEd’s grid investment plans, as described by CEJA, as well as how ComEd can support the state’s ambitious clean energy goals.

For each of the new studies, ComEd has retained experienced research teams who have worked on these issues around the country. Stakeholder feedback and discussion will also be vital to helping inform the studies with a full picture of the challenges and opportunities associated with meeting the state’s energy goals and creating an equitable clean energy economy. These new studies will focus on three topics: • Decarbonization Pathways o ComEd is partnering with Energy+Environmental Economics (E3) to explore different pathways for Illinois which would achieve a net zero economy by 2050.

While CEJA focused on power generation and achieving a decarbonized energy sector, this study will look beyond CEJA to full, economy-wide decarbonization. • Disadvantaged/Underrepresented Communities o ComEd is partnering with ILLUME Advising (ILLUME) to investigate clean energy services within disadvantaged communities. Through stakeholder engagement and regional analysis, ILLUME will explore the barriers that disadvantaged and environmental justice communities face in equitably receiving services toward clean energy transformation.

o ComEd is partnering with BW Research to study the clean energy transformation’s impact on the Illinois workforce – particularly, the potential for new jobs in disadvantaged communities.

This study will identify emerging employment opportunities in clean energy as well as potential transitions for those workers displaced from the retirement of fossil fuels. The research will include both statewide and regional analyses to support strategic planning as well as identifying workforce development opportunities for career pathways, economic mobility, and improved education and training programs.

All three studies are intended to be complete by the fall of 2022, and a final report will be made publicly available for each. “As we build our clean energy future, we have an opportunity to address longstanding public health disparities and income inequality that disproportionally impact low-income residents and people of color,” said Carl Ellis, Chairperson of the Economic Development Committee for the NAACP, Westside Branch. “We’re proud to work alongside ComEd to identify and address existing barriers and find new ways to lift communities in need.”

Separately, the Climate Risk and Adaptation Study will examine the impact of changing weather due to climate change, including sustained heat and flooding risk, on the design and performance of the region’s power grid. It is the first study launched in concert with the Electric Power Research Institute’s (EPRI) Climate READi™: Power (REsilience and ADaptation initiative), a recently announced, three-year global program on climate change risk. This will be the first climate adaptation study in the region and one of the only studies in the nation to incorporate the impact of increased electrification into the climate risk planning process.

These studies will inform ComEd’s planned grid investments that will continue to enable the clean, reliable and affordable power that ComEd customers have come to expect. ComEd in the first three months of 2022 delivered its most reliable service on record for any first quarter in the company’s history. Since starting smart grid investments in 2012, ComEd has avoided more than 17 million customer interruptions due in part to smart grid and system improvements, including digital “smart switches” that automatically reroute power around potential problem areas. These investments have helped save customers more than $3 billion in avoided outages and many millions more through efficiencies created by technologies like smart meters that help resolve outages remotely.

Rep. Casten Votes for Active Shooter Alert Act Rep. Casten voted for legislation to quickly warn Illinois communities of a nearby active shooter. The Active Shooter Alert Act will establish a program similar to the AMBER Alert system, allowing law enforcement to effectively and efficiently alert the public during a shooting.

Secured by the Democratic House Majority, today’s passage follows House Republicans’ inexplicable attempt to obstruct this life-saving legislation last month.

Since 2009, communities across the nation have been torn apart by nearly 300 mass shootings – attacks that have killed more than 1,500 people and wounded 1,000 more.

Among the most urgent challenges during an active shooter incident is the need to prevent additional victims from unknowingly walking into the line of fire.

The Active Shooter Alert Act will support these life-saving efforts by establishing an Active Shooter Alert Coordinator at the U.S. Department of Justice. The Coordinator will offer state and local law enforcement officials voluntary access to training, technical support and advice for improving or implementing active shooter alert systems.

These resources include guidance on the most effective alert content, delivery strategies and recommendations such as silencing alerts in the immediate vicinity of a shooter.

This legislation is strongly supported by major law enforcement organizations, including the National Sherriff’s Association, Major Cities Chiefs Associations, National Association of Police Organizations, Fraternal Order of Police, National Police Foundation and National District Attorneys Association.

Northwell Health’s Sandra Lindsay awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom at White House ceremony NEW HYDE PARK, N.Y. -- (BUSINESS WIRE) -- During a special ceremony held at the White House on Thursday, July 7, President Joseph R. Biden bestowed the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Sandra Lindsay, RN, DHSc, for becoming the first American to receive an approved Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine and her continued advocacy for public health equity.

Historic Summit on BlackDoctor. org Focused on Men’s Health Reaches Over 80K CHICAGO, PRNewswire -BlackDoctor.org (BDO) in partnership with the Rodham Institute at George Washington University broadcasted a historical Men’s Health Summit (MHS). This virtual summit was held in honor of the observance of Men’s Health Awareness Month and reached over 80K. Building upon the previous success of the State of Black Health (January), Minority Health (April), and Women’s Health Summit (May), the MHS addressed health challenges disproportionately impacting men’s health and offered real-time, real-life solutions. The five virtual panels featured some of the nation’s top Black experts as they engaged with Black Men from all walks of life. The panelists offered frank, practical, and culturally relevant solutions to how Black men can incorporate a healthy lifestyle gameplan that puts them in control of their health and their happiness.

The MHS spoke directly to men’s issues with two fun and lively discussions on sexual health and weight loss from a male perspective. These panels really made men “stand up” and pay attention. As Dr. Griggs stated, “If you want your soldiers to fight, you have to give them the right fuel to be in the battle.” Additionally, the partnership with Cedars-Sinai Hospital resumed with a pancreatic cancer panel. This panel was also broadcasted in Spanish on BDO’s Daily Vitamina Facebook page.

In addition to Cedar-Sinai, BDO partnered with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) on two panels discussing multiple myeloma and clinical trials, respectively. This summit serves as the

latest brand extension for BDO who is the leading provider of culturally relevant health and wellness information for Black Americans.

BDO will continue their summit series in August by hosting a Healthy Kids Summit to get parents up-to-date on immunizations, ADHD, participating in sports and other health issues impacting children as they prepare to return to school.

Bikes & Music Announces Summer “Fun-Raiser!” Group Ride and Cookout to Follow Online Fundraising Drive Bikes & Music, a Chicagoland 50 (s) (3) nonprofit corporation, has a goal to raise $25,000 by August 20,2022. The funds are needed for the repair of donated bicycles, and for the purchase of new bike helmets and locks, The bikes and equipment will be provided to children and adults in need.

Since the start of 2022, Bikes & Music has collected over 100 bicycles throughout Chicagoland. “We received a terrific response to our spring bike drive,” says Bikes & Music co-founder Ryan Gable. “We have supported organizations that are doing amazing work, like Home of the Sparrow and RefugeeOne. We’ve supplied these refurbished bikes along with helmets and locks to children and some adults that need bikes for fun for but also as a mode of transportation to work and school!”

The challenge now and mission of the fundraiser is to cover the tune-ups and repairs for these bikes. When you add in the cost of helmets and locks, it takes about $100 to get each bike ready to go an into the hands of someone that desperately wants one.

Gable explains that repairing used bicycles keeps them out of landfills. “We could almost buy new bikes for what repairs and parts cost sometimes. But we are dedicated to doing the right things for the planet by recycling bikes that just need a little love. We’re fortunate to have support from two local bike shops (Crank Revolution in Hoffman Estates and Never-Ending Cycles in Streamwood) for the safety checks, maintenance and repairs.

They do everything they can to keep our costs to a minimum.”

CPS Office of Student Health and Wellness Wins National Award for Leadership in Providing Comprehensive Student Services agriculture lab that provides a training space to equip teachers and school garden teams in various agriculture processes that can be used in classrooms and gardens. Over 200 schools have Gender and Sexuality Alliances (GSA) to enhance safe and supportive school environments, and 130 schools participate in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, bringing hands-on nutrition education to thousands of students each year. In addition, OSHW experts provide programming and technical assistance to schools around mental health, sexual health education, LGBTQ+ support, physical activity, school gardens, direct health services, and enrollment in and utilization of public health benefits such as Medicaid and SNAP. Schools achieve Healthy CPS status by meeting at least 90 percent of criteria ranging from weekly physical education minutes and daily recess to staff training and healthy celebrations. As the nation’s third-largest school district, serving more than 330,000 students in 600-plus schools, the District aims to be a national leader in the field of school health and in providing comprehensive services as outlined in this video.

The Summer Kickback Series was launched in 2021 in an effort to ensure youth across Chicago have access to engaging activities and necessary resources within their communities. This year, the City engaged and received additional feedback from community leaders, youth organizations, and Chicago’s youth on how to keep youth safe and create more opportunities in communities experiencing high levels of violence. Mayor Lightfoot and City departments launched the first youth-led Summer Kickback Series to provide teens with fun and safe activities in their communities on Friday nights in 2021. Building upon the success of last summer’s Friday Kickback Series, Mayor Lightfoot and the First Lady Amy Eshleman are now expanding programing to Saturday evenings to ensure even more weekend opportunities for youth are available.

Through community-based organizations, the City hired 210 teens who plan Friday events that are designed for teens ages 13 to 24 and their families in 15 communities on the South and West sides. Each of the 15 community-based organizations have hired 14 teens for 8 weeks, with each teen being paid $15 an hour. During the eight weeks of employment, the planning team promotes youth-focused opportunities and plans and hosts a Summer Kickback event every Friday between 5 and 9 p.m. The first event will be Friday, July 8, and will conclude on Friday, August 12. Each community will also have one “mothership” event this summer, an enhanced version of a kickback that will include a smoothie bar, e-gaming, a DJ and more activities with support from the Chicago Park District.

This summer, the City will also host ten supplemental Low-Key Kickbacks: Saturday Edition, on Saturdays from 6 to 9 p.m. The LowKey series will bring food, entertainment, and various activities to the South and West sides, starting July 23 at Grand Crossing Park. Entertainment will include prominent Chicago DJs, steppers and breakers, sporting events, a selfie station, art activations, and free COVID-19 vaccination sites. Reps. Davis, Gomez, Peters, & Panetta Introduce Bill to Help Millions of Struggling Renters via Innovative Tax Credit WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Danny K. Davis (D-IL), Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-CA), Rep. Scott Peters (D-CA), and Rep. Jimmy Panetta (DCA) introduced innovative legislation to help millions of cost-burdened renters at a time when housing costs are skyrocketing as the gap between incomes and housing costs grows. The Rent Relief Act creates a new tax credit for renters that would cover a percentage of the difference between 30 percent of their adjusted gross income and the actual cost of rent and utilities, capping the benefit at 100% of Small Area Fair Market Rent. The bill makes the credit available to most working families by allowing the credit for families earning up to $100,000. Further, it delivers help when needed with monthly payments to pay bills when they are due, building on the successful advanced Child Tax Credit that helped tens of millions escape poverty.

Stable housing is foundational for the social, emotional, and economic well-being of individuals and families.

Nationally, 8 million of the lowest-income renters spend at least half of their income on rent, leaving them little remaining to cover other basic needs for food, clothing, and health care. Despite the profound need, only 1 in 4 eligible households receives any help, and some households spend years on waitlists due to inadequate funding. Creating a new renters’ tax credit – along with expanding targeted investments to increase supply – can help end America’s housing crisis.

“Every day thousands of people in Chicago struggle to pay rent,” said Rep. Davis.

“The Rent Relief Act will help renters in a real, life-changing way so that they can better care for their families without fear of eviction or making the horrible choice between a roof over their heads or medicine and food for children. Fish with Bok Choy Prep time: 3 minutes Cook time: 7 minutes Servings: 1

1 Minute Brown Rice Cup salt, to taste pepper, to taste 1 white fish fillet 1 tablespoon butter 1 teaspoon sesame oil 1 teaspoon grated ginger 2 baby bok choy, quartered 1 teaspoon soy sauce Heat rice according to package directions.

Set aside.

Add salt and pepper to both sides of fish, to taste.

In medium skillet over medium-high heat, melt butter. Cook fish 2 minutes on each side. Remove fish from pan and keep warm.

In same pan, add sesame oil and ginger.

Cook 1 minute.

Add bok choy to pan and stir-fry 2 minutes.

Add soy sauce; stir to incorporate. Top rice with fish and serve with bok choy.
