GOV. PRITZKER SIGNS LEGISLATION BOLSTERING ACCESS TO HEALTHY FOOD IN SCHOOLS NEW LAW ENABLES SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO FURTHER PARTNERSHIPS WITH FOOD PROVIDERS THAT PRIORITIZE THE HEALTH OF STUDENTS CHICAGO – Governor JB Pritzker today signed legislation to increase access to healthy food options in schools across the state, providing Illinois children with the well-rounded, nutritious meals necessary to maintaining a healthy learning environment.

“Illinois students deserve healthy, sustainable food options at every turn,” said Governor JB Pritzker.

“Schools are a haven. They are where our state’s children spend most of their time outside of the home— and our schools provide reliable, consistent meals for students, day in and day out. With this legislation, Illinois’ schools will be able to serve nutritious food options without having to jump thro Under House Bill 4813, food service providers that participate in any of the USDA’s child nutrition programs are exempt from contract bidding requirements. This legislation encourages school districts to give preference to contracts that promote the health and well-being of students, source local food products, and value the welfare of animals, allowing Illinois school districts to improve the evaluation process for potential food service vendors. All potential food suppliers are required to submit data to the school district at the time of the bid, to the best of their ability with an annual update during the term of contract if it is awarded.

House Bill 4813 is the administration’s latest initiative to increase access to healthy foods for Illinoisans of all ages. Earlier this month, Gov. Pritzker established the Healthy Foods Access Program, which expands access to healthy foods in underserved areas. Under this program, grocery stores, corner stores, farmers’ markets, and other small retailers may receive assistance through grants, loans, equipment, or other financial assistance to be awarded on a competitive basis. Additional efforts include public-private partnerships to expand purchasing options for those who receive SNAP benefits, empowering the Illinois Commission to End Hunger to advance the From Food Insecurity to Food Equity: A Roadmap to End Hunger plan, a three-part strategy for connecting residents in need to nutrition assistance programs, and promoting equitable access to food for every Illinoisan.

Local company wants to change narrative in conversations about race Continued from page 1

Justice Informed is a social impact consulting firm, based in the City of Chicago. The goal of Justice Informed is to infuse their global perspective into the companies and organizations they work with. The work the company does catalyzes strategies for social impact for different organizations. Those strategies are informed by certain narratives, what people believe or what they don’t believe.

For instance, in conversations around safety and security and civic organizations, if they believe the narrative around Blackness is one of criminality, that creates a strategy around policing. But, if they believe the narrative is around disinvestment, the strategy shifts toward ensuring there are adequate and equitable resources in Black and Brown communities.

“We deal a lot around language, as it relates to narratives and shifting narratives, because we believe many of the strategies for social impact we’re dealing with today, whether that be in corporate around their diversity, equity and inclusion-based programs and hiring, or philanthropic and the ways they look at grant making in communities or color … it starts with a shift in narratives,” Ramey said.

Ramey participates in public and keynote speeches and panel discussions because he is trying to infuse something different in the conversation around best practices for social impact. It is his hope that corporations and philanthropic organizations bring in Justice Informed to help them change the way they do their work.

Ramey serves as the chief advisor for several Chief Diversity Officers, from small startups to Fortune 500 companies. For the smaller companies Justice Informed works with, those conversations are centered around growth, with a focus on pay equity, inclusion, as well as creating a culture of being welcoming and providing a sense of belonging. For non-profits, those conversations focus on community building with other nonprofits and bringing them together to create policy that can be used to bring resources to the communities they serve. With foundations, the work is around the ways they use their money

to ensure inclusion and antiracism are included into their award structure.

While Ramey was at the University of Chicago, he was doing work around social justice. He felt like he wanted to do direct work and “get into the fray.”

“I wanted to make strategies that I actually felt matched the urgency of need for our people, rather than the fear of people who are afraid to talk about things like racism. They’re afraid to say white supremacy, they’re afraid to talk about queer identity.

They don’t know much about disability justice. I wanted to do something more urgent and get into the fight myself,” Ramey said.

When Ramey first started Justice Informed, people told him he couldn’t build a company around social change, but he had already been doing the work and there were people saying they wanted to work with him and his company. His first clients were nonprofit organizations, then he expanded to work with organizations and corporations.

In 2020, when George Floyd was murdered, a lot changed for Justice Informed. There was a greater need for their services. In a month, there was an 800% increase in call for their services, specifically around diversity, equity and inclusion.

Not all those organizations went forward with Justice Informed, because they couldn’t answer questions around diversity, equity and inclusion, nor did they have staff people assigned to that work to start with. Two years later, the demand for justice work has died down tremendously and it has been put on the back burner again.

“A lot commitments were made, statements were made, a lot of it has not panned out the way folks said that it would. The companies have invested by hiring one chief diversity officer, or one inclusion lead, but they are not giving them teams,” Ramey said. “What we need right now are people who are socially informed, who understand the basics of business practices – business operations, budgeting, financials -- but also, people management and practices and policies for human resources.”

CAMP SHEDD: SUMMER ROAD TRIP 2022

Every day brings a brand-new adventure for the campers on Shedd’s Summer Road Trip as they explore the nature that thrives and flourishes in the Chicagoland area. Through outdoor activities, environmental investigations and unexpected discoveries, children entering grades sixth-eighth will learn about the local wildlife, hike, paddle, swim and embrace their spirit of curiosity. The week concludes with an overnight stay at the aquarium.

ACTION DAYS

The Great Lakes basin supports over 40 million people who depend upon the lakes for drinking water and employment, not to mention over 3,500 animal and plant species who call the lakes their home. Guests can take action to protect Blanding’s turtles, lake sturgeon, alligator snapping turtles, bullfrogs, ducks and fellow humans by participating in Shedd’s Action Days. At various local beaches, waterways and forest preserves throughout the summer, volunteers can contribute to our conservation efforts through litter cleanup, coastal habitat restoration and woodland habitat restoration.

KAYAK FOR CONSERVATION

Kayak for Conservation brings participants on an engaging tour of the Chicago River and its wildlife as participants kayak through the heart of the city. Led by a Shedd nature expert, these tours focus on the impact of human behavior on river ecology and how participants can be advocates for this invaluable natural resource. The program was developed in partnership with environmental not-for-profit Urban Rivers, the force behind the “Wild Mile Chicago” project aimed at creating a floating eco-park along the Chicago River. Tours are offered at a variety of levels of experience and may include litter cleanup or other activities.

AT THE AQUARIUM

Along with countless opportunities for adventuring off-property, Shedd offers a host of

activities at the aquarium. General admission to the aquarium includes access to all of the habitats, Animal Spotlights and touch experiences, and membership grants guests even more discounts and exclusive events.

Reserving tickets in advance is required for all Shedd guests, including members.

TEEN WORKSHOPS

Shedd also offers workshops to teens who want to dive deeper into topics about animal care, ecosystem preservation and careers at the aquarium. These workshops are free and welcome curious-minded individuals to make an even stronger connection with the aquatic world and engage with Shedd staff.

NEW MOBILE APP: SHEDD GO

Guests can download the brand-new mobile app Shedd Go for iOS and Android for in-depth information on animals, exhibits and building navigation. Users can search for the names of their favorite animals, hear more about an animal’s story and even start exploring the aquarium virtually. The app is fully translated into Spanish, made possible through support from the Service Club of Chicago.

Illinois residents receive free general admission to Shedd Aquarium on select days during the summer. In June, the next free admission days (barring a $3 transaction fee per order) are June 27-28, 2022.

School’s out, and so are Shedd’s cownose rays. ATTORNEY GENERAL RAOUL ANNOUNCES SETTLEMENT WITH PEOPLES GAS OVER CHAMPAIGN COUNTY NATURAL GAS LEAK Consent Order Requires Remediation of the Mahomet Aquifer and Protection for Impacted Homeowners

Attorney General Kwame Raoul today announced a consent order with The Peoples Gas Light and Coke Company (Peoples Gas) over a natural gas leak that reached one of Central Illinois’ largest fresh water sources and nearby residents’ private wells.

The consent order, entered in Champaign County Circuit Court, resolves a lawsuit the Attorney General’s office filed after natural gas leaked from a Peoples Gas underground storage facility near the village of Fisher, Illinois into the Mahomet Aquifer and the private wells of nearby homes. Natural gas consists primarily of methane, which is nontoxic but is flammable and, in high amounts, can cause asphyxiation in enclosed spaces.

“This consent order will ensure that Peoples Gas is held accountable for cleaning up the gas release and required to provide residents access to safe drinking water,” Raoul said. “My office will continue to work diligently to protect Illinois residents from contamination that threatens public health and the environment.”

The consent order requires Peoples Gas to mitigate the release by implementing a Groundwater Management Zone (GMZ) approved by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA). Implementation of the GMZ includes the operation of four new relief wells to remove methane from the aquifer. The wells are located in areas identified through site investigation as most likely to yield migrated gas. If any of the relief wells fail to yield methane, Peoples Gas will be required to locate and install a replacement well.

Peoples Gas must also conduct periodic sampling of a monitoring network to track the extent of the release and the progress of mitigation by the relief wells. Peoples Gas must continue to operate relief wells and sample until IEPA concurs that clean-up objectives have been met. Peoples Gas must then conduct at least three years of additional monitoring to ensure that methane remains within approved levels.

“This consent order will ensure the company complies with technical requirements such as the Groundwater Management Zone and takes additional steps to address natural gas affecting the local aquifer, monitor the groundwater, and further study the transport of the dissolved gas,” said Illinois EPA Director John J. Kim. “Illinois EPA will continue to evaluate the effectiveness of the remedy system and assess any needed updates to remediate and protect the groundwater that was contaminated by the natural gas leak from Manlove Field.”

The order also provides relief for impacted households. Peoples Gas must offer water treatment systems, bottled water, in-home gas monitoring devices and ongoing water monitoring to any household with levels of methane from the release exceeding an action level identified by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH).

“This consent order represents a significant win for the health and safety of central Illinois residents whose drinking water wells have been affected by natural gas and demonstrates our commitment to working with our

sister agencies to protect the environment,” said Illinois Department of Public Health Acting Director Amaal Tokars. “We applaud the Attorney General’s Office for their aggressive handling of this successful environmental enforcement action.”

The Attorney General’s office filed the lawsuit in October 2017, based on a referral from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). In 2018, the Attorney General’s office received additional related referrals from IEPA and IDPH. The consent order follows two interim orders, entered in October 2017 and September 2019, that required Peoples Gas to investigate the release and provide relief to impacted households.

The order further requires that Peoples Gas pay a total of $575,000 in civil penalties and additional payments: $150,000 to IEPA; $25,000 to IDPH; $225,000 to IDNR; and $175,000 to the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

CHA dedicates South Side senior building to current longest-serving Commissioner The Chicago Housing Authority yesterday dedicated a recently refurbished South Side senior building, located at 6360 S. Minerva, to its current longest-serving Commissioner, Dr. Mildred C. Harris.

Dr. Harris, who was initially appointed to the CHA Board of Commissioners by Mayor Richard M. Daley on July 7, 1999, is widely recognized as an influential teacher, author, pastor and board member. Dr. Harris has consistently used her platform to help serve and assist public housing residents, and particularly seniors, by contributing thousands of dollars in scholarships over the years to CHA students and pioneering many CHA-related efforts such as the “Adopt-A-Building” program, establishing a food pantry and collecting thousands of canned goods for CHA seniors..

In nearly 23 years as a member of CHA’s Board, she has not missed a single meeting.

CDPH Statement on the Response to the Ongoing Monkeypox (MPV) Outbreak Including Allocation of Vaccine Federal partners recently provided welcome updates on the monkeypox virus (MPV) response, highlighting expanded testing capacity at public health laboratories and at large clinical reference laboratories, as well as increased deployment of JYNNEOS vaccine.

Nationally, 296,000 vaccine doses will be allocated in the coming days and weeks, and 1.6 million available in the coming month. The goal is to vaccinate individuals with confirmed MPV exposures and those at high-risk of having been exposed: gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (collectively referred to as MSM) who have recently had multiple sex partners in a venue where there was known to be monkeypox or in an area where MPV is spreading. The national strategy is aligned with the work we have already started in Chicago with the help of clinical partners.

How to Set a Proper Budget for

YOUR HOME REMODEL “If a homeowner or contractor doesn’t pull permits and something goes wrong, the homeowner is liable to fix the problem.”

(Family Features) When you decide to renovate your home – whether to sell or make improvements for you and your family to enjoy – setting a budget can be a challenge. Knowing what you want to accomplish may be the easy part but avoiding the bad advice out there and determining what you can actually afford takes research and detailed planning.

Consider these tips from National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) member contractors to help build an appropriate remodeling budget.

Identify your project scope and ideal budget.

Start by creating a list of everything you would like to include in your renovation then separate your list into wants and needs. From there, determine a proposed budget for the project based on how much you’re comfortable spending and your home’s value.

“Get your bids after you know what the project is,” said Michael Anschel, principal of OA Design+Build+Architecture.

Meet with remodelers. Set up a meeting with a local remodeling company and share your proposed scope of work and budget to see if it’s feasible. An experienced, professional remodeler who is a member of an organization like NARI can share feedback on the costs in your area and any challenges involved with your project based on experiences with homes

like yours. Once you have a better understanding of the true scope of the project, meet with other contractors to gather a few estimates to compare.

“Are you hiring an installer or are you hiring an expert guide?” asked Barak Steenlage, co-owner of Anchor Builders. “The difference is worth the investment.”

Beware of low estimates. When evaluating companies for your project, remember estimates you may find online don’t typically account for regional variations, the cost of various types of labor and necessary permits.

“Cost estimates you find may be national averages that are lower than the costs in your city,” said Bjorn Freudenthal, homeowner advisor at New Spaces. “Also, they may only account for the cost of the replacement materials, not other costs like changing the floor plan or updating electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems. They might also be missing the costs of removal of hazardous materials like asbestos and lead paint.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has also caused some materials to rise in cost, so it’s important to account for these increases.

“Bad contractor stories come from people cutting corners and hiring unqualified people,” Anschel said. “When you’re paying bottom of the

barrel, there’s no bandwidth for the contractor to solve problems.”

Ensure you have proper permits. Not all projects require permits, but it is important to determine if your project requires one from your city or county.

Make sure you (or your contractor) obtain one, if necessary, to ensure the safety of the work and its compliance with building, construction and zoning codes.

“If a homeowner or contractor doesn’t pull permits and something goes wrong, the homeowner is liable to fix the problem,” Anschel said. “This additional cost could be a large percentage of the original job, and maybe more.”

Understand your timeline. The purpose of your renovation can impact the long-term value of the project. Making updates to prepare your home to sell, for example, is a more immediate cost than updating a space you will spend time in for years to come.

“When the homeowner is looking to stay 7-10 years or more, it impacts lifetime value because you can spread the cost out over a longer period of time,” Steenlage said.

New Research Sheds Light on How People Are Taking Civic Action (StatePoint) New research is offering insights into how the world can recover and rebuild from the pandemic, along with how individuals and organizations can address issues they care about in their communities.

“Civic Life Today: The State of Global Civic Engagement,” which was commissioned by Points of Light and designed and executed by INFLUENCE|SG, studied attitudes around civic engagement in the United States, the United Kingdom, India, and Brazil.

“We believe that the most powerful force is the individual who has realized their power to make change happen. However, everyone can be more impactful when working together,” says Natalye Paquin, president and CEO of Points of Light, the world’s largest nonprofit dedicated to accelerating people-powered change. “This report is intended to reveal ways to act effectively -- making it easier for individuals to find these opportunities and organizations to create them.”

The report also supports Points of Light’s Civic Circle, a framework that helps people understand that there are many ways to do good. The nine activities outlined by the Civic Circle are: listening and learning, using one’s voice, social entrepreneurship, volunteering, public, national or military service, using one’s purchasing power to express values, working, voting, and donating. Whether you’re a business leader hoping to mobilize your employees, a nonprofit or NGO leader looking to connect individuals to your cause, or an individual wanting to support your community, the Civic Circle and these key report takeaways can help you get started:

• Issues leading civic engagement: Education, the environment, and healthcare were the top issues respondents wanted their countries to support, with healthcare ranked the leading issue in the United States.
