COLLEGE CONSENSUS PUBLISHES RANKING OF THE BEST COLLEGE ALUMNI ASSOCIATIONS FOR 2019 Northwestern University and the University of Chicago have been identified as being two of the 50 Most Supportive Alumni Networks for 2019 according to College Consensus, a college ratings website that aggregates publisher rankings and student reviews.

“Very few students really take the alumni association into account when they’re researching where they want to go to college,” the editors of College Consensus note. However, “alumni are key to conquering the job market,” they add.

ILLINOIS OFFICIALS CAUTION RESIDENTS TO BE AWARE OF BLUE-GREEN ALGAE As temperatures begin to rise, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Public Health are reminding residents to be cautious if they are planning activities on Illinois lakes and rivers, now and throughout the summer.

Water conditions are ideal for blue-green algae growth. Blue-green algae (also known as cyanobacteria) are microscopic organisms that naturally occur in lakes and streams. Rapid growth of algae is referred to as a “bloom.” While most blue-green algae are harmless, some can produce toxic chemicals that cause sickness or other health effects in people and pets, depending on the amount and type of exposure.

BIPARTISAN BILL TO ADDRESS PREDATORY PHONE RATES IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM U.S. Senators Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Rob Portman (R-OH), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Brian Schatz (D-HI), Ed Markey (D-MA) and Angus King (I-ME) recently introduced the Martha Wright-Reed Just and Reasonable Communications Act to strengthen the nation’s criminal justice system. This bipartisan bill would help families keep in touch with their incarcerated family members, which studies have shown can help reduce recidivism rates and thereby save taxpayer dollars.

This targeted legislation would address long-standing concerns about the prohibitively expensive and predatory price of phone calls that incarcerated individuals at correctional facilities across the U.S. are forced to pay if they want to contact their family or friends. The bipartisan legislation would affirm the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) authority to address a market failure to protect family, clergy and counsel who communicate with prisoners, inmates and detainees. The legislation also makes clear that the obligations of fairness in inmate communications apply to all individuals, including those living with a disability.

Originally located in Harper Court in Hyde Park, local barbecue restaurant Pork Chop has officially moved into the Red Fish Bleu Fish location at 5121 S. Harper Ave. which is also in Hyde Park. Both restaurants are owned by Jovanis Bouargoub and will continue to operate out of the one location creating a casual dining experience with a variety of options.

The menu at Pork Chop is a go-to for barbecue with items like smoked wings, bone-in pork chops, and smoked brisket chili. Red Fish Bleu Fish serves seafood classics like mussels, creamy seafood chowder, lobster, and a build-your-own seafood boil.

“I moved Pork Chop because I have a great manager and a great chef making sure the food is executed the right way at Red Fish Bleu Fish so we just brought it over,” said Bouargoub. “We added a small bar

and some new decor and now because of Pork Chop, which is a well-known brand, we have all the people coming and they are getting exposed to the seafood menu and it’s perfect.”

Originally from France, Bouargoub studied hospitality management at Le Cordon Bleu which is an international chain of hospitality and culinary schools. He now lives in Hyde Park and said that it is a great neighborhood to do business in.

“Hyde Park is like a small city by itself.

The good thing about Hyde Park is that everybody knows everyone, it’s not like when you are downtown or in West Loop. The people appreciate you and support you. Hyde Parkers are like one community and they appreciate you as much as you appreciate them and they show you love,” said Bouargoub.

Now that Red Fish Bleu Fish and Pork Chop are operating out of the same location, Bouargoub said that he is thinking about adding another dining option to the space

which he described as beautiful, classy, and industrial. By adding a third restaurant concept to the mix, Bouargoub would be fulfilling his vision of creating a small food hall in the community.

“I am trying to have a small food hall in Hyde Park. I have a big space at the Red Fish Bleu Fish building and I want to keep my eyes on the space and make sure I combine my ideas together. I saw enough space for Pork Chop to be there and now I see enough space for another concept, maybe a gourmet concept,” said Bouargoub.

In addition to Red Fish Bleu Fish and Pork Chop, Bouargoub also owns a bar called The Hyde which is located just down the street at 5115 S. Harper Ave. The Hyde is a speakeasy bar that is typically open on the weekends and offers live music and a unique list of rules including a no cell phone policy.

Summer Program Offerings in Hyde Park Step into summer with a host of fun-filled outdoor activities in the Chicago region offered by the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust. Programs are held at Wright’s Home and Studio, located at 951 Chicago Avenue in Oak Park, and the Robie House, located at 5757 South Woodlawn Avenue in Chicago (Hyde Park).

Free popup workshops with design activities for children ages Pre-K to 5th grade will be offered inside the courtyard, Thursdays at the Robie House and Fridays at the Home and Studio, July 11 – August 9.

Art-making activities will will include origami, printmaking, LEGO building, sketching and sun prints. No registration necessary.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Home and Studio in Oak Park will host an Open House on Thursday, August 15, 5-6:30 pm. This family-friendly event includes stationed tours of the Home and Studio, refreshments and art activities for children in the courtyard.

Delegation Discusses Massacres In Haiti

Bronzeville resident and health coach, Stacy Hubert, will once again hosts Trifecta on the Beach at Pier 31, 3101 S. Lake Shore Dr. from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on June 29. Trifecta on the Beach is a two-hour fitness workshop that combines boot camp style workouts with mindful meditation, nutrition education, and yoga on the shores of Lake Michigan.

“The Trifecta event is a one-stop shop that I created as an avenue where people can learn about healthy eating, fitness and working out, mindfulness, how to reduce stress, yoga, and breathing techniques. It’s like mind, body, and soul all in one with a limited time frame of two hours,” said Hubert.

Trifecta on the Beach is an ongoing summer series that will take place on June 29, July 27, and Aug. 24. Hubert said that she knows people have busy lives and can tend to

not prioritize their health because of a lack of time so she has created this event to be a place where people can come to get their health and wellness questions answered and participate in exercise classes.

“All I’m asking for is two hours of your time because we know people have kids, work, and families and just don’t have the time to go to a yoga studio on [one] day, the gym on another day, then go see a physician or nutrition coach the next day to get all this information. I said, why not create a space where we can get this all at one time? So we did and that’s why it’s called Trifecta,” said Hubert.

For over 20 years Hubert has been a registered nurse and has three masters degrees in nursing, business administration, and health administration along with a certification in health coaching. During her career, she has seen a wide variety of illnesses that could have been prevented or significantly slowed

by implementing exercise and nutrition education which is why she is passionate about hosting Trifecta on the Beach.

“I feel like I am an expert here because I do have the background, the training, the education, and the expertise and all that to really help people get healthy before they end up becoming a patient and I’m taking care of them on the hospital side. I see patients at the hospital and I’m like, ‘wow I wish I would have caught you sooner before you even step through the doors’,” said Hubert.

Trifecta on the Beach is open for everyone but Hubert is specifically targeting people who are 30 years old or older and might have some creeping health concerns that she could help them address.

More than $17 Million In Department of Health And Human Services Funds Go To The University of Chicago U.S. Representative Bobby L. Rush (D-Ill.) recently announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services would award $17,249,630 in federal funding to the University of Chicago. This grant will support drug abuse and addiction research programs.

“This is a significant win for

the University of Chicago. As one of the great institutions in the 1st Congressional District of Illinois, it is important to see them lead in an area that impacts so many Americans right here in Chicago and the surrounding communities. I have long advocated for solutions to treat drug

abuse and addiction. Last year, I worked on a bipartisan basis to ensure that the opioid legislation included provisions to provide treatment to those suffering from addiction to crack cocaine as well as other substances in addition to opioids. This important provision was signed into law as part of

the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act in 2018,” said Rush. “I am excited to see the impact this funding will have on our district and the country and I will continue to fight for resources and federal funding that will provide solutions to the most pressing issues facing our communities.”

Actor/humanitarian Danny Glover recently joined radio journalist Margaret Prescod and Pierre Labossiere at a community forum in Los Angeles on June 15 to share the findings of two delegations that recently visited Haiti.

Prescod is the host of Pacifica Radio’s “Sojourner Truth” and is with Women of Color/ Global Women’s Strike and Labossiere represents the Haiti Action Committee.

The forum was held to raise awareness about the issue.

The press release also stated Glover was devastated by the stories he heard about the massacres including the reported chopping up and burning of bodies of men, women and children who were left to be eaten by animals, and the burning of hundreds of homes. Responding to Haitian government claims that the murders are due to “gang-violence,” Glover said, “Clearly, these are not random gang attacks, but people who are being targeted because they dare to stand up to the present government with demands for education, healthcare and justice for all.”

Prescod said, “We are committed to getting the truth out about what is going on and to work in solidarity with the Haitian grassroots, in particular with the people’s organization, Fanmi Lavalas, who represents the majority of Haitian people — to bring justice and democracy to their country.”

Labossiere, a delegation member and a presenter at the June 15th forum, stated that it was time to put an end to Haiti’s 15 year despotic rule. He added, “Since the bloody coup d’état in February 2004 led by the US, France and Canada, it has been a 15-year process by the ensuing US-UN occupation to drag the Haitian people back to the brutal dictatorship, murder and corruption of the Duvalier years. The world needs to know the present-day reality in Haiti and to stand in solidarity with the Haitian people.”

Glover proclaimed that he is Haitian at heart, because the country played a central historic role in the ending of slavery in all of the Americas and that we all owe a great debt to Haiti.

“I have promised to stand with the Haitian people in their struggle for justice and insist that everything possible be done to end the massacres and bring hope to the Haitian people,” he said.

According to the latest State of Creative Hiring data, 75% of advertising and marketing hiring decision makers anticipate expanding their teams in the second half of 2019, up from 60% six months ago. In addition, 62% of employers plan to increase the number of freelancers they use, a 6-point jump from the first half of the year.

Web and mobile development remains the top area for recruiting among survey respondents.

Advertising and marketing hiring managers also reported a strong need for professionals with expertise in user experience, web production, and user interface and interaction design.

digital investments,” said Diane Domeyer, executive director of The Creative Group. “One of the biggest challenges employers face, however, is finding and hiring the talent they need quickly enough to keep up with growing business demands.”

Staffing Challenges and Strategies A majority of advertising and marketing hiring decision makers (86%) said it’s somewhat or very challenging to locate the creative talent they seek. And when it comes to recruiting professionals with digital expertise, the job is just as tough: 75% reported difficulty finding and retaining these individuals. This may be one reason 45% of employers cited being

understaffed in digital areas.

In order to make better hires, many creative managers are keen on partnering with their peers on the technology team. More than 9 in 10 survey respondents (92%) said it would be helpful to work with IT hiring decision makers when recruiting full-time professionals to support digital marketing initiatives, and 65% said they frequently do.

“Creative and technology professionals are collaborating more than ever on digital marketing projects,” Domeyer noted. “Hiring managers who work together to identify recruiting needs across departments are in the best position to build high-performing teams with complementary rather than redundant skills.”

Walter E. Massey, former chairman of Bank of America, will publish his memoir, “In the Eye of the Storm: My Year as Chairman of Bank of America During the Country’s Worst Financial Crisis,” with Beckham Publications, the house announced. Release is set for spring, 2020.

In addition to offering FREE mustache and beard trims, Wahl hosted Chicago Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky at the barbershop on Saturday, June 8, 2019. Trubisky took his turn in the barber chair, and engaged with fans in some fun facial hair activities.

Superbowl Champion Kam Chancellor Expands Men’s Shoe Collection Superbowl Champion and recently retired Legion of Boom member Kam Chancellor, and wife Tiffany, recently launched the Chancellor Collection in Seattle’s Market Street Shoes.

The men’s shoe line was created in partnership with Chicago-based men’s shoe company Marc Nolan. After debuting in two Chicago locations this spring, the Collection is expanding into a Seattle brick and mortar location for the first time.

After neck injuries prevented medical clearance

to play last season, the four-time NFL pro bowler retired earlier this month to pursue life after football in business, mentorship and fashion. In collaboration with Tiffany, an actress and model, the couple’s first entrepreneurial venture was to make a luxury aesthetic shoe that would be affordable and accessible to their young fans and followers.

The Chancellors have a long history and passion for the fashion industry. Tiffany began modeling at age three and pursued it as a career after graduating

college. She has since done commercial modeling for companies like K-Mart, Sketchers and Toyota.

Kam has appeared on the runway at New York Fashion Week. The couple also attended shows and events at both Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks earlier this year.

The Chancellor Collection retails for $115 and is now available at Marc Nolan, Market Street Shoes and online. The Collection will launch the first ‘his’ and ‘hers’ line this summer.

Mendoza: Illinois must ‘remain grounded’ amid big budget steps Comptroller credits governor for ‘six or seven years’ worth of work’ in one legislative session

SPRINGFIELD – With a fiscal year 2020 operating budget in place and a historic legislative session in the rearview mirror, Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza is “cautiously optimistic” about the state’s new direction.

“I think this was truly the most monumentally historic session that I have witnessed in my lifetime. And I’ve been around the Springfield legislature now for 20 years,” Mendoza said.

Mendoza, a Chicago Democrat who took office in the middle of an unprecedented 736-day state budget impasse, said there was not much in Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s agenda she disagreed with this year. This led her to play a less vocal role than she did during the tumultuous governorship of Republican Bruce Rauner.

“I don’t want to be seen as ‘oh, she’s being so nice to the governor,’ but the reality of it is (Pritzker) deserves the accolades,” Mendoza said.

“That was a huge lift and he did it in his first term, which far exceeded

the expectations that I would have had for a brand new governor, and he managed to bring Democrats and Republicans together in a way that Governor Rauner couldn’t even bring his own members together outside of bringing them together through fear.”

Specifically, she emphasized the importance of the $40.1 billion operating budget, a $45 billion capital plan, and new revenues which will result from marijuana legalization and gambling expansion.

Despite these steps, Mendoza said it’s important to “remain grounded” and focused on paying down Illinois’ outsized bill backlog, which sits between $6 billion and $7 billion.

“We have $6.6 billion worth of bills that have not been paid yet, which means that we still owe that money; those are real liabilities that have been incurred,” she said. “But this is by far, by far, the closest thing

that we’ve seen to a balanced budget in probably over a decade.”

Mendoza said she was encouraged by $1.2 billion in bonding authorization included in the budget which she said would combine with federal matching funds to pay down $1.5 billion in health care bills which are incurring late payment interest rates of 9 to 12 percent.

For taxpayers, this means a savings in the “hundreds of millions,” she said.

“If we can take that $1.2 billion to market and get a 3.5 percent or a 4 percent, 4.5 percent rate, we’re still shaving off a ton of points for what we’re paying, which ultimately saves us money in the long run,” she said.

The same strategy, she said, allowed her to shrink a $16.7 billion backlog she inherited after her election in 2016 to the $6-plus billion it is today.

That action entailed the state borrowing $6 billion to address the backlog which included $1.1 billion in late payment interest penalties accrued in Rauner’s first two years as governor.

“It’s going to save us between $4 billion and $6 billion over the 12 years once we’re done paying that debt service,” she said. “So it was a massive win for the state of Illinois.”

Building on that effort, the $1.2 billion in new bonding will help bring the backlog into the $5 billion range, Mendoza said, but she will not be comfortable as comptroller until the number is closer to $2 billion or $3 billion.

“Having a rainy day fund is where I’d like to get us to,” she said.

Still, Mendoza said, Illinois is “not out of the woods.”

“Of course we need more revenue and I think that’s why the fair tax is so important,” she said.

She spoke in favor of Pritzker’s plan for a graduated income tax, noting she would advocate for some of the estimated $3.5 billion in added revenue from the proposal to be used to pay down the bill backlog and pension obligations.

She also said government forecasters might have acted too quickly when they bumped revenue projections for fiscal year 2020 up by $800 million in response to strong April revenues.

“I think it’s way too early to make that projection,” she said.

She added that the state could see decreased revenues for the rest of the year when taxpayers adjust their withholdings to account for tax changes at the federal level.

Still, she said, the budget marks a major leap forward in a state that has needed to take one for a long time.

“They did like six or seven years’ worth of work in one session,” she said. “It’s pretty spectacular.”
