CELEBRATION FEATURES 2,300 GRADUATES The entire graduating Class of 2018 from Noble’s 17 charter public high schools across Chicago gathered downtown recently to celebrate their 98% college acceptance rate and $474 million in scholarships earned.

Graduates included 70 DREAMers being awarded scholarships, 300 students headed to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, 300 students to the University of Illinois at Chicago, and more than 100 students attending Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs).

MOST EMERGENCY PHYSICIANS REPORT HOSPITALS NOT “FULLY PREPARED” FOR DISASTERS Nine in 10 emergency physicians responding to a new poll say that in the past month, they have experienced shortages or absences of critical medicines in their emergency departments. In addition, nearly all (93 percent of 247 doctors) say their emergency departments are not “fully prepared” for patient surge capacity in the event of a natural or man-made disaster, or mass-casualty incident, with 49 percent saying they are “somewhat” prepared, according to the poll conducted by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).

“These results demonstrate why there needs to be a much stronger focus on the medical aspects of preparedness in the Pandemic and All Hazards Preparedness and Advancing Innovation Act of 2018 [PAHPAI] that is currently being drafted,” said Paul Kivela, MD, FACEP, president of ACEP. “Hospitals and emergency medical services continue to suffer significant gaps in disaster preparedness, as well as national drug shortages for essential emergency medications. These shortages can last for months, or longer, and constitute a significant risk to patients. Emergency physicians are concerned that our system cannot even meet daily demands, let alone during a medical surge for a natural or man-made disaster.”

POLICE REMOVE MORE THAN 100 MCDONALD’S WORKERS FROM ILLINOIS STATEHOUSE More than 100 McDonald’s cooks and cashiers were physically removed by Capitol police from a protest at the Illinois statehouse recently as the Fight for $15 joined forces with the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival in nonviolent direct action.

Carrying signs reading “Black Workers Matter, McDonald’s” and chanting “We Believe That We Will Win,” workers in McDonald’s uniforms were carried away along with activists, clergy and community leaders following a two-hour sit-in at the governor’s office and the legislative chambers. The nonviolent direct action against systemic racism was part of a wave of Poor People’s Campaign protests that hit 35 state capitals and Washington, D.C. The Fight for $15 has built deep ties with civil rights groups and leaders over the past five years. U.S. Rep. John Lewis joined Atlanta fast-food workers on a strike line in August 2013, encouraging them to, “Keep walking, keep marching, keep talking, keep pushing.” In the summer of 2014, the NAACP passed a resolution backing the Fight for $15. In the winter of 2015, Memphis sanitation workers who participated in the 1968 strike implored a gathering of fast-food workers at Dr. King’s church in Atlanta to keep fighting for $15 and union rights; and diverse group of faith leaders have echoed the workers’ moral argument for dignity on the job.

Long Time Woodlawn Activist Supports Obama Presidential Center

ith the recent news of the nearly-unanimous Chicago City Council vote to approve the construction of the Obama Presidential Center (OPC) in Jackson Park, Dr. Leon Finney Jr., founder and CEO of Urban Broadcast Media and longtime community activist in Woodlawn, is beaming.

At a recent meeting of the Chicago Plan Commission, Finney presented a petition with 5,038 signatures asking that the Plan Commission vote in favor of the OPC. The OPC will be a new landmark for the South Side of Chicago and an economic engine for the entire city. The OPC will help to revitalize historic Jackson Park and seamlessly connect the park to the lakefront. Upon completion, the OPC and Jackson Park will be a place for all seasons, with winding landscapes, a sledding hill, and quiet places to read with most of the space being free and open to the public, according to the Obama Foundation.

Over the years, Finney has been involved with building affordable housing and encouraging economic growth in Woodlawn, which is a neighborhood that sits adjacent to Jackson Park. Even still, Finney said that his years of work will not come close to impacting the community as much as the OPC can.

“The actual building of the OPC itself is a stellar event but the impact that it will have on the economic and social revitalization of Woodlawn will be massive. We will see homes being built www.thechicagocitizen.com

and for sale that might have taken years to build, we’ll see new business coming to the neighborhood that it would take years to attract. We’ll see Woodlawn’s institutions, it’s schools, and it’s churches benefit and they will continue to benefit for many years to come,” said Finney Many people have criticized and petitioned against the OPC coming to Jackson Park claiming that the development will cause current residents to be displaced and the neighborhood to change. However, the neighborhood has been changing, according to Finney, just not in a positive way.

“The neighborhood has been changing all along as middleincome families and working families have gradually left Woodlawn. I grew up in Woodlawn. I’ve been either living or working in Woodlawn since I was four years old and I’m 79 now.

I’ve seen Woodlawn change for the worse, not the better. This center proposes to change Woodlawn for the better,” said Finney.

Of the over 2,000 affordable homes that Finney has been involved in building in Woodlawn, all will be staying he said.

What he hopes will be on its way out is the 500 acres of vacant land that currently exists in Woodlawn “This is a great day for the City of Chicago, for the south side of Chicago, and for the African American community of Chicago for the 44th president to be located right here in the heart of the black community,” said Finney about the city council vote to approve the OPC.

Hyde Park Based Organization Receives $1.5 Million from Benefit Chicago Fund Continued from page 1

owPow, a Hyde Park-based organization that uses a digital platform and data analytics to connect patients in under-resourced neighborhoods with nearby health and social services, recently received a $1.5 million loan from the Benefit Chicago fund.

The Benefit Chicago fund is generated by a group of donors who provide loans for mission-directed for-profit and nonprofit organizations that need money to grow, but can’t conventionally access it.

The John D. And Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Calvert Impact Capital, The Chicago Community Trust collaborated and created the Benefit Chicago Fund which began

lending in 2017. Since then several other companies have invested in the fund which has a goal of making $100 million of impact investments in the Chicago region.

Praxis Mutual Funds, based in Goshen IN, has invested $1 million in the Benefit Chicago fund and has a long history of impact investing, according to Mark Regier, vice president of Stewardship Investing, and director of sales for Praxis Mutual Funds.

“We invest in the fund and then the fund turns around and makes loans as they become available and as they find appropriate candidates for the fund,” said Regier. “I think Benefit Chicago is looking for a combination of factors. They want an organization with a strong history, good leadership, they look at the stability of the staff, and the depth and credibility of the board. They look for really strong institutions.”

NowPow uses their digital platform to provide referrals to users for vital self-care services like food pantries, mental health support groups, and housing and job search assistance to more than 1,000 users from 45 South and West side health systems in Chicago.

“We are a self-care referral platform that connects people to basic resources to meet basic needs in their community as well as help them manage with chronic diseases,” said Rachel Kohler, chief executive officer of NowPow. “What we do is leverage the resource directory with our matching algorithms to identify needs on behalf of the person and match them to specific services that help them get well, stay well, or manage with disease.”

With the Benefit Chicago loan money, NowPow plans to move forward with 4 points of expansion.

They will continue to build their resource directory and hope to expand into North side neighborhoods where the technology is needed. There will also be an effort to get more community-based organizations on the technology.

NowPow has developed a self-serve platform that will allow individuals to access a network of resources. With the loan money, they will move forward with testing the selfserve technology and try to get community organizations interested in using it. Lastly, NowPow will continue to add large health care systems to the network as referral centers.

“The fact that Chicago has this right here and has put this much money at play in order to support organizations like ours is very inspiring and it makes me feel very hopeful about what can happen,” said Kohler.

Museum of Science and Industry Opens Interactive Pixar Exhibit

he Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) recently opened a new temporary exhibit, The Science Behind Pixar, which gives guests an in-depth look at the work that goes into making animated Pixar films like Finding Nemo and Toy Story.

Within the two-gallery exhibition, guest will have a chance to experience 40 interactive elements showing how modeling, lighting, rigging, surfaces, sets, and cameras are all used to create a Pixar animated movie.

“One of the great things, we always like to offer a behind the scenes look when we can and this is a great way for guest to see the process that goes into making a Pixar animation film.

I think that once guests come to the exhibit they will see that there is a lot that goes into the process of making a Pixar film and that there is so much science, technology, engineering, and math that goes into this process,” said Jeff Buonomo is our Manager of Special Exhibitions at MSI. The exhibit is fun and educational for all ages. Young children will enjoy meeting the larger-than-life models of their favorite Pixar characters while older kids and adults can really dive into the interactive and educational elements of the exhibit.

For school-aged kids and even adults, there are so many rich interactives to do. You can learn how to be a lighting artist and how that conveys itself in a Pixar animated film, how modeling works, how rigging works in a computer-animated film. It’s one of the most interactive exhibitions we’ve ever hosted, as far as I’m concerned, from a temporary exhibit,” said Buonomo.

The Science Behind Pixar exhibition was originally created by Pixar with the Museum

of Science in Boston and has since been traveling around the country and duplicated to be displayed in Europe and Asia. The exhibit will stay at MSI all Sumer, Fall, and the winter holidays.

The staff at MSI are excited to have The Science of Pixar at the museum because it greatly adds to their mission of inspiring creativity and innovation.

“We always like to highlight creativity and innovation. We do that with examples of past creativity and innovation, future creativity and innovation. Of course, all the careers and

people who are working at Pixar are doing that and in the moment they are putting all these science, technology, engineering, and math careers to work. Hopefully, this exhibit will inspire some of these young kids to pursue some of these careers so that they can be creating the next films for tomorrow,” said Buonomo.

Entrance to The Science Behind Pixar is not included in Museum Entry and requires an additional timed-entry ticket, $14 for adults and seniors and $11 for children.

80 US Communities to Fight Local Hunger with Bees NEW YORK – The Honeybee Conservancy

has announced the selection of 80 community organizations from across the United States to benefit from their successful Sponsor-A-Hive program. The program provides underserved communities with bees, bee homes, supplies, and educational support to advance bee conservation and fight hunger by empowering communities to establish sustainable agricultural resources within their neighborhoods.

Bees are essential for the pollination of so much of the food Americans eat. Guillermo Fernandez, Director of The Honeybee Conservancy notes, “One in three bites of food we eat depends entirely on bees—and they are dying out. Bees inhabit the juncture where sustainability, science, and the local food movement intersect.”

The Sponsor-A-Hive Program has worked to combat this decline by creating 165 bee sanctuaries since its inception in 2015, introducing millions of pollinators to US communities. Organizations such as the

University of Montana, New Jersey’s Greater Newark Conservatory, and Washington’s Center for Self Reliance have received not only bees, beekeeping equipment, curriculum and resources, but also guidance from Honeybee Conservancy experts whose ongoing support helps organizations place and sustain bee homes to ensure their long-term success.

The 2018 Sponsor-A-Hive Program participants represent a wide variety of nonprofit community organizations, including schools, Native American tribes, nature centers, neighborhood parks, food banks, museums, and more. Strategic Wealth Partners Celebrates Ten Years of Service

T

en years ago, an economic tsunami was brewing. An overheated real estate market was cooling off and subprime mortgage defaults were piling up. Before the end of September ’08, the Dow Jones Industrial Average would plummet more than 777 points, the most in any single day in history.

A Monday morning quarterback might say 2008 was not the best year to launch a wealth management firm.

But for David Copeland and Neal Price, there was no turning back. The two partners had put everything on the line to start their own investment advisory and financial planning firm. On May 16, 2008, Strategic Wealth Partners of Deerfield, Illinois opened its doors.

Ten years later, Copeland and Price sit in a conference room at Strategic Wealth Partners offices near downtown Deerfield, sharing stories about the early days. The bond forged between the two in the trenches of financial battle is evident. Through the closed door, the hum of a busy office can be heard. A decade earlier, the firm had started with five people, 175 clients and around $450 million assets under management. Today, 30 professionals provide investment advisory services and support to approximately 600 clients* across the country. There is now a second office in Milwaukee. At more than $2.6 billion in assets under advisement*, assets have more than quintupled. Clients of the firm typically have investable assets between $2 million and $100 million.

Did the pair have misgivings during

those tumultuous months of 2008 and 2009? “Do you mean hourly or daily,” laughs Copeland. “We created business plans and financial models and then Dave would cut my financial models drastically,” says Price. “I would say, ‘that’s so draconian. That could never happen.’ But even Dave’s worst-case scenario wasn’t as bad as what happened.”

“No one could see the bottom,” adds Copeland.

THE RIGHT BUSINESS MODEL Just how the firm survived, and then thrived, in ensuing years is a fascinating study. The two North Shore area residents are quick to admit that the 2008 trial by fire was the ultimate test of their business model. They were determined to build a model in which the firm would not accept commissions. Firms that operate on commission-based fee structures can affect a manager’s objectivity and influence the advice provided to clients. They wanted Strategic Wealth Partners to offer independent, feebased advisory services and to truly embrace the concept of being a fiduciary to their clients.

“We knew that we had the opportunity to

develop something we both felt very strongly about and felt there was demand for what we wanted to build,” says Copeland. “I knew if I were a client, I would want to work with an independent advisory firm that didn’t have ties to investment banking, corporate finance, a trading desk, or to any other parts of financial services where conflicts are evident.” Price adds, “I give credit for our success to our clients. We firmly believed we were doing the right thing for our clients, and our clients validated that.”

As part of their vision to do what’s best for the client, they created a business model based on collaboration, not competition. “Unlike many large investment houses, we don’t compete against each other,” says Copeland.

“Here, everyone works together. That’s a major reason for our success.”

Copeland points out that collaboration allows his team to benefit from shared perspectives on the same topic. “Because clients work with multiple team members, they receive a more customized solution,” he notes.

PEOPLE AND COMMUNITY Ask what makes them most proud and the conversation turns towards the firm’s staff. “I’m most gratified to be part of a firm that provides good jobs for 28 people,” says Price. “I give credit for our success to our staff. There are very few firms that deliver the kind of service we do. Our highly customized approach is somewhat inefficient; it’s a lot of hard work and involves a lot of heavy lifting. Our team bends over backwards for clients every day.”

Those same staff members are also very active in their community. Strategic Wealth Partners staff volunteer for a range of civic and charitable organizations including Jewish United Fund (JUF), Jewish Council for Youth Services (JCYS), Open Heart Magic, and Froedtert Community Memorial Hospital. “We strongly encourage our team to be engaged in the community,” says Price. “That really is a core part of our success. You don’t join a board or organization because you think it’s good for business. You do it because it’s the right thing to do for the community.”

THE NEXT TEN YEARS Ten successful years have given the partners the opportunity to think about the next ten years. “We don’t expect – or want – to be a household name with a big billboard out there,” says Copeland. “We want to continue to build a solid reputation for integrity, objectivity, hands-on service and reliability. We believe this will increase our credibility in the region and attract clients to our firm.”

Today, much of Strategic Wealth Partners’ attention is focused on succession-planning and developing the firm’s next generation of leaders to serve the next generation of clients. “From day one, we set out to create something that was going to be around a lot longer than the two of us,” says Price. “It was one of the reasons we didn’t put our name on the door. We wanted to build a firm with the ability to create success for our clients and hopefully, for their kids and grandkids - long beyond the time that we’re going to be here.”

Project Hero is a national nonprofit organization that helps veterans and first responders affected by injury, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury achieve rehabilitation, recovery and resilience in their daily lives.

This addition to the Real Men Cook festivities is in response to many men who expressed a desire to be feted in a formal setting. In making the announcement, Ayinde Cartman, Real Men Charities, Inc. City of Chicago Announces Music Lineup for 38th Annual Taste of Chicago

ayor Rahm Emanuel and the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) are pleased to announce the full music lineup for the 38th Annual Taste of Chicago. Default Terms: In event of non-payment in full of all unauthorized-use fees by User within ten (10) days of date Invoice is sent, User shall be deemed in default and: (a) all of User's property and property pledged as collateral by User, as set forth in above in paragraph "(2)," immediately becomes, i.e. is, property of Secured Party; (b) Secured Party is appointed User's Authorized Representative as set forth above in paragraph "(8)"; and (c) User consents and agrees that Secured Party may take possession of, as well as otherwise dispose of in any manner that Secured Party, in Secured Party's sole discretion, deems appropriate, including, but not limited by, sale at auction, at any time following User's default, and without further notice, any and all of User's property and interest, described above in paragraph "(2)," formerly pledged as collateral by User, now property of Secured Party, in respect of this "Self-executing Contract/Security Agreement in Event of Unauthorized Use," that Secured Party, again in Secured Party's sole discretion, deems appropriate.
