2 briefly DOORDASH ANNOUNCES THE INAUGURAL COHORT OF ACCELERATOR FOR LOCAL GOODS PARTICIPANTS In March, DoorDash debuted the Accelerator for Local Goods – an educational program designed to uplift local consumer packaged goods businesses owned by entrepreneurs who are women, transgender, immigrants, or people of color. DoorDash is proud to announce the inaugural cohort of business owners from Chicago, New York City, and the greater Washington DC area who have been selected to participate in the six-week program designed in partnership with Next Street aimed at providing educational resources and funding for participants to grow their businesses.

This class of innovators represents a wide range of identities, with 77% of participants identifying as female, 40% of participants identifying as Black or African American, 7% Hispanic or Latino, and 21% Asian or Pacific Islander. Immigrant-owned businesses make up 20% of the participants and the top product categories include sweet snacks, grocery products, non-alcoholic beverages, and salty snacks.

For many participating entrepreneurs, this will mark the first time their products have been distributed outside of their own websites.

Candidate wants to restore 1st District to glory it once had Continued from page 1

Jonathan Swain is a self-described son of the South Side.

He was Born in South Shore, reared in Hyde Park and attended school in Chatham. He also played sports in Roseland. He and his wife bought their first two houses in Auburn-Gresham.

Swain’s father had business all over the South Side. It enabled Swain to see all of the 1st Congressional District. He got a sense of the richness of Black businesses, Black entrepreneurship, Black professionals. It made him who he is today.

Swain spent 20 years related to government, as well as 15 years as a business owner. He is the owner of the Kimbark Beverage Shoppe. Swain founded Hyde Park Brew Fest, which is now known as Hyde Park Summer Fest.

Swain was the CEO of Link Unlimited Scholars. It was an organization that helped Swain and his wife, Angela, get through high school and into college. The goal of Link Unlimited Scholars is to help Black students access and complete college. He served in that role for four years and has been on leave while running his Congressional campaign.

Swain decided to run for Congress because he wanted to take the experience he possesses in business and government and non-profit, community and youth and bring his voice to the conversation.

“This is a moment in our community where it requires leadership. I think there’s been a void of that. Look at our neighborhoods, look at 79th Street, look at 87th Street, look at Cottage Grove. They’re not better than they were 15 years ago or 25 years ago, they’re headed in the wrong direction,” he said.

Swain has heard people say they are leaving the District, going to places like Texas, Arizona and even Indiana. He believes if people, especially Black people continue to leave the city and the District, it will hurt the city and region and put pressure on those who choose to stay.

Swain believes that while people might not know his name, they have been impacted by something he has done, whether it

was his work with Link Unlimited Scholars, Kimbark Beverage or the Hyde Park Summer Fest.

Swain is the co-founder of Black Bench Chicago, with Alexandra P. Sims, President of APS & Associates. The goal of the program is to train millennials how to do public affairs and politics. It also connected people within that cohort with its community advisory board. Swain and Sims wanted to communicate to young people the importance of being part of the politic landscape in order to have their voices heard.

“In all my years of government, I have learned, the people who get the response are the people who show up. The older groups are showing up, they’re voices are being heard and the policies are being created to support them, which is wonderful and great. But, if the policies aren’t taking into account, the ideas and thoughts and needs of the 30-year-olds and 40-year-olds and 25-year-olds, we’re not getting robust policies to service all,” Swain said.

During his time in city government, Swain learned how resources are allocated and how people make determination about who gets what. He believes that when people are included in the solution, they include themselves in the work.

Swain believes the top three issues that people are concerned about are the safety of their communities, people are concerned about rising gas and food prices and people are concerned about affordability and equity of healthcare.

Swain believes transparency is absolutely important to the role of an elected official. Once in office, Swain wants to build an infrastructure of people who will hold him accountable and ensure they are included in the decision-making process.

“These seats that we sit in are not seats of entitlement. They are seats that are really the public trust. If we are in seats of the public trust, we have to disclose and be open to the public who have granted us the fortune of sitting in these seats,” he said.

“These are the people’s seats and we’re being given a trust to be able to sit in those seats. We need to take that trust seriously.”

EXELON-FUNDED $36 MILLION RACIAL EQUITY CAPITAL FUND ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FROM MINORITY-OWNED BUSINESSES IN SERVICE AREAS Chicago, Ill. – Exelon announced that RockCreek, one of the world’s largest diverse-owned global investment firms, has opened applications for the $36 million Exelon-funded Racial Equity Capital Fund to support minority-owned businesses in Exelon’s service areas in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Illinois, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Exelon, which serves more than 10 million customers through its six electric and gas utilities, announced last fall that it had partnered with the Exelon Foundation to create the Racial Equity Capital Fund. The fund will help minority businesses obtain capital to fuel growth and spur job opportunities in communities that have historically been underserved, under-resourced, and overlooked by investors and traditional funding sources. The fund will provide loans and equity investments for numerous minority businesses throughout Exelon’s service areas over the next three years, with estimated loan amounts between $100,000 and $300,000, and equity investments of nearly $1 million.

“With this fund, we are empowering small, minority-owned businesses to grow their capacity, increase revenue and hire more employees,” said Calvin Butler, chief operating officer and senior executive vice president of Exelon. “We have identified financial partners who understand the unique challenges these businesses face, but who also share our vision and are eager to reinvigorate

the communities we both serve.”

RockCreek has forged initial partnerships with minority-owned lending institutions and a community-based bank to increase the investment capacity of the Racial Equity Capital Fund. The fund will invest in minority-owned businesses who have historically lacked access to capital to sustain operations, grow revenues, create jobs, and increase wellbeing throughout underserved and under-resourced communities.

“Capital is the fuel that allows businesses to grow, create jobs, and strengthen communities, and for too long, minority-owned businesses – and entire communities – have been neglected by allocators of capital,” said Afsaneh Beschloss, Founder and CEO of RockCreek. “The Racial Equity Capital Fund will bring this critical fuel directly to minority-owned businesses and will continue serving their communities in the years ahead.”

Peoria — On Tuesday, May 10, Governor Pritzker signed HB4736, authorizing the creation and funding of the Co-Responders Pilot Program.

The pilot will support police in areas across the state in teaming up with social service agencies to address the root causes of disturbances or crime.

Initial programs will launch in Peoria, Springfield, East St. Louis, and Waukegan in the next six months.

“We know that building a safer Illinois means approaching crime from every possible angle,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “This program combines the necessary skills of police with the specialized training of social workers and mental health professionals to address the root causes of crime compassionately and safely. This is supported by data and by what law enforcement officers on the ground are telling us about the incidents they’re addressing.”

The Co-Responder Pilot Program authorizes police officers to bring social workers and mental health professionals on calls to assess if the person is experiencing a mental health crisis.

Law enforcement and social workers can then decide if a mental health facility or other supports could address their needs and behaviors. Governor Pritzker’s FY23 budget allocated $10 million dollars to fund this pilot.

In addition to the Co-Responders Pilot Program, the bill addresses victim’s rights and public safety holistically by mandating trauma-informed training for homicide investigators, authorizing funding to the Violent Crime Witness Protection Act (previously the Gang Crime Witness Protection Act), and creating a grant program to create tip hotlines or other victim and witness resources.

Governor Pritzker also signed two other bills into law as part of his administration’s research informed and multi-pronged approach to public safety and victim’s rights: HB3863, a bill addressing the strain put on first responders and the difficulties associated with attracting and retaining officer. This fund recognizes the challenges and stresses presented by a career in law enforcement and offers retention incentives and recruiting funds to preserve force numbers.

HB 2985, which authorizes the creation of a fund to directly pay funeral expenses of children murdered due to gun violence. Previously, families had to pay for these expenses upfront and then apply for reimburse-

ment, placing a financial burden on those most in need of support during a time of tragedy.

“As head of the Justice, Equity and Opportunity Initiative, I am proud of these critical pieces of legislation,” said Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton.

“The bills signed today build on our efforts to create a statewide anti-violence strategy that is rooted in care, compassion, and investment in communities’ wellbeing.”

“This is 21st century policing where a collaborative approach with law enforcement and behavioral health professionals is designed to create better outcomes for both officers and the community,” said Leader Jehan Gordon-Booth (D-Peoria). “As part of a comprehensive approach to address public safety, this measure will set up new units within departments to connect violence survivors with trauma-informed crisis intervention, assistance with finding safe housing and counseling. It also helps to bring needed security for crime witnesses, offering real financial assistance for relocation and temporary living costs.”

“Everyone in every zip code should feel comfortable being able to walk down the street,” said State Senator Robert Peters (D-Chicago). “No matter where you are, who you are or where you live you should deserve to feel comfortable and safe. This measure does that by expanding witness protection and by incorporating the voices and needs of stakeholders and survivors.”

“Losing a child to violence is unimaginably horrific, and we should do what we can to support these families in their most difficult hours,” said State Rep. Camille Lilly (D-Chicago) “It’s truly unfortunate that we even have to consider legislation like this.

As someone who has experienced this tragedy in my family, I am hopeful that this new law will help ease the financial burden families face so that they can properly honor their lost one.

May peace and comfort be with the families.”

“It is necessary that we create a process that financially and emotionally supports grieving Illinois families facing the harsh realities of a child’s death from gun violence,” said Leader Jacqueline Y. Collins. “I am eager to see this relief remove some of the burden of gun violence, and though nothing can take away the pain of losing a loved one to needless crime, I hope to ease the torment with this legislation.”

Putin’s unjustified invasion of Ukraine has cut off a critical source of wheat, corn, barley, oilseeds, and cooking oil. It has also disrupted global supply chains for fertilizer, which farmers depend on to maximize yields. These and other actions, combined with the ongoing pandemic-related disruptions to global supply chains, have put pressure on food prices, with global food prices increasing nearly 13 percent following Putin’s invasion.

America’s farmers are the breadbasket of democracy and are already playing a critical role in the fight against Putin’s Price Hike. During President Biden’s first year in office, American agricultural exports shattered all previous records, reaching a combined $177 billion, generating an estimated $378 billion in total economic output, and supporting 1.3 million jobs here in the United States.

The President recently announced new actions to give farmers the tools and resources they need to boost production, lower food prices and feed the world. As the world’s second largest exporter of wheat and soybeans, these actions will help grow new markets for American-grown food, supporting jobs in rural communities across America. Specifically, the Biden-Harris Administration will: • Increase the number of counties eligible for double cropping insurance: • Double cropping allows farmers to plant a second crop on the same land in the same year, helping boost production without relying on farmers to substitute crops or cultivate new land. But it is not free from risk and some farmers who practice double cropping cannot obtain crop insurance, including those in Kankakee County, Illinois.

• The Biden-Harris Administration is seeking to expand insurance for double cropping to as many as 681 additional counties, bringing the total number of counties where this practice qualifies for crop insurance to as many as 1,935, so more American farmers have the financial security they need to start or expand double cropping.

• Cut costs for farmers by increasing technical assistance for technology-driven “precision agriculture” and other nutrient management tools: • Precision agriculture is a farm management system that allows farmers to use technology to target the application of inputs to soil and plant needs, resulting in less fertilizer usage without reducing yields, saving farmers money over time and extending the usefulness of critical products in short supply worldwide.

• The U.S. Department of Agriculture has planning and cost sharing assistance programs available to help American farmers with nutrient management. The Biden-Harris Administration is working to boost outreach to farmers, streamline the application process, and prioritize application approvals to expand access to these critical programs.

• Double funding for domestic fertilizer production: • Fertilizer prices have more than doubled since last year, due in part to supply chain disruptions created and exacerbated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, including rising energy costs.

• President Biden announced that he is doubling his initial $250 million investment in domestic fertilizer production to $500 million to lower costs and boost availability for farmers, so they can obtain the inputs they need at prices they can afford to maximize yields.

Barry S. McLeod Continues to Make His Mark (Black PR Wire) Affectionately referred to as Florida’s Own, Barry S. McLeod is a talented writer, director, producer and musician with over four decades of experience in the industry. The Gainesville native had dreams of making his mark in the entertainment industry as a young boy where began playing drums in his uncle’s church. He went into the Navy right after high school and formed a band playing bass guitar. Upon leaving the Navy with an honorable discharge, he became a hairstylist. Although a hairstylist by profession for 34 years, McLeod was always a prolific writer who dreamed of success on Broadway or in Hollywood.

To expose himself to the entertainment industry, McLeod started writing, choreographing, directing and producing fashion shows for local organizations.

At the same time, he played in professional bands doing many gigs for various organizations and clubs. Later, he decided to write for film and although he got two close calls, nothing really worked out.

Determined not to give in or give up, McLeod started writing, directing and producing his own stage plays and presenting them for churches. A man of many talents, McLeod also acted in them and would go on to produce a stage play tour. Continuing to make his mark, McLeod was unceasing in writing for film and also wrote and self-published four books. He continued playing in bands and DJ’ing while filming a series of short films and sitcoms.

McLeod admits that he was encouraged by the late Professor James Haskins (The Cotton Club). “He critiqued my first screenplay and told me that I had potential.” Somewhat of a mentor to me, I learned from him and I took off like a rocket in search of a destination. Cooking Swaps to Help Manage CHOLESTEROL

(Family Features) When cooking, keep in mind small changes that can make a big impact on heart health.

High cholesterol is one of the major controllable risk factors for heart disease and stroke, with about 38% of American adults diagnosed with high cholesterol, according to the American Heart Association. It can be managed by getting levels regularly tested and making lifestyle changes like eating a heart-healthy diet.

• Reduce saturated fat – Select lean cuts of meat or opt for plant protein, limit processed meats, broil or bake rather than pan-fry meats and remove skin from poultry before cooking.

• Eat more fish – Fish can be fatty or lean, but it’s still low in saturated fat.

Choose oily fish like salmon or trout, which are high in omega-3 fatty acids.

• Use liquid oils in place of solid fats – For roasting, sauteing and more, use non-tropical liquid vegetable oils like canola, safflower, soybean or olive instead of butter, lard or shortening.

• Lower dairy fats – Low-fat,

Air Fryer Crispy (Un) Fried Chicken Recipe courtesy of the American Heart Association Servings: 4 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons minced fresh parsley 1/2 teaspoon ground oregano 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional) 1/2-1 cup low-fat buttermilk 1/2 tablespoon hot pepper sauce (optional) 1/3 cup whole-wheat panko breadcrumbs 1/3 cup shredded or grated Parmesan cheese 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (about 4 ounces each), visible fat discarded, flattened to 1/4-inch thickness, patted dry with paper towelsnonstick cooking spray

Preheat air fryer to 390 F. In shallow dish or pie pan, whisk flour, parsley, oregano, pepper and cayenne.

In separate shallow dish or pie pan, whisk buttermilk and hot sauce.

In third shallow dish or pie pan, stir panko and Parmesan.

Place dishes and large plate in row. Dip chicken in flour mixture then buttermilk mixture then panko mixture, turning to coat at each step and gently shaking off excess. Using fingertips, gently press panko mixture so it adheres. Place chicken on plate.

Cover and refrigerate 30 minutes.

Lightly spray chicken with nonstick cooking spray. Arrange chicken in single layer in air fryer basket, working in batches if needed. Cook 10-15 minutes, or until chicken is no longer pink in center and coating is golden brown, turning once halfway through and lightly spraying with nonstick cooking spray.

Chicken Tortilla Soup

Servings: 4 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, visible fat discarded, cut into 1/2-inch cubes 2 cups frozen whole-kernel corn, thawed 2 cups fat-free, no-salt-added chicken broth 1 can (14 1/2 ounces) no-salt-added, diced tomatoes, undrained 1/4 cup finely chopped onion 1 teaspoon sugar 1 teaspoon ancho powder 2 medium garlic cloves, minced 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 corn tortillas (6 inches each), cut into 1/4-inch-wide strips 1 corn tortilla (6 inches), torn into pieces 2-4 tablespoons snipped fresh cilantro 1/4 cup finely chopped avocado 1/4 medium red bell pepper, cut into matchstick-size strips In slow cooker, stir chicken, corn, broth, tomatoes, onion, sugar, ancho powder, garlic and salt. Cook, covered, on low, 6-8 hours, or on high, 3-4 hours.

Preheat oven to 350 F. On baking sheet, arrange tortilla strips in single layer. Bake 8-10 minutes, or until crisp. Transfer baking sheet to cooling rack. Let strips stand 15 minutes, or until cool.

Transfer to airtight container and set aside.

When soup is ready, transfer 1 cup to food processor or blender. Stir in tortilla pieces. Let mixture stand 1 minute. Process until smooth. Stir mixture into soup. Stir in cilantro.

Ladle soup into bowls. Sprinkle with avocado, bell pepper and reserved tortilla strips.
